Solvo-thermal in situ transesterification of wet spent coffee grounds for the production of biodiesel

This work addresses non-catalytic biodiesel production from spent coffee ground (SCG) by integrating solvo-thermal effect of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) with in situ transesterification over 160 °C. The SCG water content has a positive effect on the DCE hydrolysis up to 60 wt% due to the bimolecular substitution mechanism. The hydrolysis gives an acidic environment favorable for cellulose decomposition, SCG particle size reduction and lipid conversion. The optimal fatty acid ethyl ester yield was 11.8 wt% based on the mass of dried SCG with 3.36 ml ethanol and 3.16 ml DCE at 196.8 °C through the response surface methodology. Using the solvo-thermal effect, direct utilization of wet SCG as a biodiesel feedstock provides not only economic feasibility without using drying process and additional acid catalyst but also environmental advantage of recycling the municipal waste.

Rapid, regioselective deuteration of dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridines via microwave-assistance

Isotopically pure [D₆]-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine derivatives were selectively and rapidly formed using microwave-assisted regioselective deuteration of the methyl moieties of the parent bipyridine in a deuterium oxide solution.

Efficient and Convenient Heterogeneous Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective Deuteration at the Benzylic Position

The Pd/C-catalyzed efficient and regioselective hydrogen-deuterium (H-D) exchange reaction on the benzylic site proceeded in D2O in the presence of a small amount of H2 gas. The use of the Pd/C-ethylenediamine complex [Pd/C(en)] as a catalyst instead of Pd/C led to the efficient deuterium incorporation into the benzylic site of O-benzyl protective groups without hydrogenolysis. These H-D exchange reactions provide a post synthetic and D(2)-gas-free deuterium-labeling method on a wide variety of benzylic sites using D2O as the deuterium source and heterogeneous Pd/C or Pd/C(en) as a reusable heterogeneous palladium catalyst under mild and neutral conditions.

Efficient H/D Exchange Reactions of Alkyl-Substituted Benzene Derivatives by Means of the Pd/C–H2–D2O System

A method for efficient and extensive H/D exchange of substituted benzene derivatives which is catalyzed by heterogeneous Pd/C in D(2)O as a deuterium source under hydrogen atmosphere is described. Multi-deuterium incorporation into unactivated linear or branched alkyl chains that bear a carboxyl, hydroxyl, ether, ester, or amide moiety and are connected with a benzene ring was achieved by using the Pd/C-H(2)-D(2)O system. The present method does not require expensive deuterium gas or any special equipment.

Noncatalytic kinetic study on site-selective H/D exchange reaction of phenol in sub- and supercritical water

The site-selective H/D exchange reaction of phenol in sub- and supercritical water is studied without added catalysts. In subcritical water in equilibrium with steam at 210-240 degrees C, the H/D exchange proceeds both at the ortho and para sites in the phenyl ring, with no exchange observed at the meta site. The pseudo-first-order rate constants are of the order of 10(-4) s(-1); 50% larger for the ortho than for the para site. In supercritical water, the exchange is observed also at the meta site with the rate constant in the range of 10(-6)-10(-4) s(-1). As the bulk density decreases, the exchange slows down and the site selectivity toward the ortho is enhanced. The enhancement is due to the phenol-water interaction preference at the atomic resolution. The site selectivity toward the ortho is further enhanced when the reaction is carried out in benzene/water solution. Using such selectivity control and the reversible nature of the hydrothermal deuteration/protonation process, it is feasible to synthesize phenyl compounds that are deuterated at any topological combination of ortho, meta, and para sites.
