Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient and an important component of many selenoproteins that possess fundamental importance to human health. Selenium deficiency and excess will cause corresponding diseases in the human body. The nutritional health of Se in the human body mainly depends on the daily dietary Se intake of the human body, which in turn depends to a certain extent on the content of Se transmitted along the food chain. This study aims to research the transport of Se through the soil-crop-human chain in regions with different Se levels, and to establish the model between the residents' dietary Se intake and the three Se biomarkers (hair, nails, and plasma), to predict the nutritional health status of Se in residents through Se biomarkers. METHOD Carry out field and cross-sectional surveys of populations in Loujiaba Village and Longshui Village. Samples were collected from soil, crops, drinking water, residents' hair, nails, plasma, and diet. The concentration of available Se fractions was extracted from soil samples using 0.1 mol/L K2HPO4. The concentration of total Se for all samples was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the relative standard deviation was less than 5%. In this study, hair, nails, and blood samples were collected from volunteers according to the Declaration of Helsinki and the Ethics Committee of Soochow University. The dietary nutritional structure and dietary Se intake of the population were randomly selected by 12 volunteers using the duplicate portion method. Data were described using mean ± standard deviation. We performed saliency analysis and correlation analysis (with Pearson correlation coefficient), and fitted a regression to evaluate the associations between these variables. RESULTS The soil total Se (5201 ± 609.2 μg/kg) and available Se (307.7 ± 83.5 μg/kg) in Luojiaba Village (LJB) were significantly higher than the soil total Se (229.2 ± 32.5 μg/kg) and available Se (21.9 ± 4.0 μg/kg) in Longshui Village (LS). The residents' dietary Se intake of LJB (150.3 ± 2.2 μg/d) was within the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended intake range, while LS (16.0 ± 0.4 μg/d) was close to the range of Keshan disease occurrence, and there was a risk of insufficient Se intake. The correlation analysis found significant positive correlations between residents' dietary Se intake and the three Se biomarkers. According to the preliminary model established in this study, if the daily dietary Se intake of residents reaches the WHO recommended value of 55-400 μg, the hair, nails, and plasma of Se concentration will be 522.1-2850.5 μg/kg, 1069.0-6147.4 μg/kg, and 128.3-661.36 μg/L, respectively. CONCLUSION Selenium is transmitted through the soil-crop-human chain, and the Se concentration that enters the human body through the food chain in high-Se areas is significantly higher than that in low-Se areas. The nutritional health status of Se in the human body depends on the daily dietary intake of the human body, and there is a significant correlation between the daily dietary Se intake of the human body and the three biomarkers of Se levels in the human body, so the three biomarkers can be used to evaluate the Se nutritional health of the human.

Abstract
In 1963, selenosis occurred in Yutangba Village, Enshi City, China. Subsequently, local residents migrated to a new area of Yutangba to avoid high selenium (Se) exposure. In this study, 19 soil samples, 43 food samples, 60 hair samples and 58 plasma samples from local residents were randomly collected in New Yutangba Village. The mean total Se concentrations in cultivated soil samples were 1753.6 ± 742.8 µg/kg (n = 14). The estimated daily Se intake in New Yutangba Village decreased to 63.2 ± 39.8 µg/day, slightly higher than the recommended dietary Se intake for adults in China (60 µg/day). The mean Se concentrations in hair and plasma samples were 549.7 ± 165.2 µg/kg (n = 60) and 98.4 ± 32.1 µg/L (n = 58), respectively. The result indicated that appropriate activities, such as relocation, consuming a mixture of local foods and market foods containing low Se concentration, could effectively reduce the risk of high Se exposure.

Lower circulating zinc and selenium levels are associated with an increased risk of asthma: evidence from a meta-analysis. Public Health Nutr 2019; 23:1555-1562. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies evaluating the associations of circulating Zn and Se levels with asthma have produced inconsistent results. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to summarize and quantitatively synthesize the evidence from observational research. DESIGN Meta-analysis. SETTING We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases up to May 2019 for relevant available articles. Random-effects model was adopted to estimate the pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95 % CI. Meta-regression analysis and 'leave-one-out' sensitivity analysis were used to assess heterogeneity. PARTICIPANTS The meta-analysis focused on general populations. RESULTS A total of twenty-six studies for Zn and forty studies for Se were included in the meta-analysis. The overall analyses identified that asthma patients had lower Zn (SMD = -0·40; 95 % CI -0·77, -0·03; I2 = 94·1 %) and Se (SMD = -0·32; 95 % CI -0·48, -0·17; I2 = 90·9 %) levels in serum or plasma compared with healthy controls. After removing the studies that contributed to the heterogeneity, the pooled SMD were -0·26 (95 % CI -0·40, -0·13; I2 = 37·42 %) for Zn and -0·06 (95 % CI -0·13, 0·02; I2 = 43·54 %) for Se. CONCLUSIONS Lower circulating Zn and Se levels might be associated with an increased risk of asthma.

Abstract
A reported association between estrogen and selenium status may be important in the regulation of selenium metabolism. In this study, the effect of estrogen status on the metabolism of orally administered (75)Se-selenite and tissue selenium status was investigated. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were bilaterally ovariectomized at 7 weeks of age and implanted with either a placebo pellet (OVX) or pellet containing estradiol (OVX+E2), or were sham operated (Sham). At 12 weeks of age, 60 µCi of (75)Se as selenite was orally administered to OVX and OVX+E2 rats. Blood and organs were collected 1, 3, 6 and 24 h after dosing. Estrogen status was associated with time-dependent differences in distribution of (75)Se in plasma, red blood cell (RBC), liver, heart, kidney, spleen, brain and thymus and incorporation of (75)Se into plasma selenoprotein P (Sepp1) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Estrogen treatment also significantly increased selenium concentration and GPx activity in plasma, liver and brain, selenium concentration in RBC and hepatic Sepp1 and GPx1 messenger RNA. These results suggest that estrogen status affects tissue distribution of selenium by modulating Sepp1, as this protein plays a central role in selenium transport.

Abstract
Food systems need to produce enough of the essential trace element Se to provide regular adult intakes of at least 40 μg/d to support the maximal expression of the Se enzymes, and perhaps as much as 300 μg/d to reduce risks of cancer. Deprivation of Se is associated with impairments in antioxidant protection, redox regulation and energy production as consequences of suboptimal expression of one or more of the Se-containing enzymes. These impairments may not cause deficiency signs in the classical sense, but instead contribute to health problems caused by physiological and environmental oxidative stresses and infections. At the same time, supranutritional intakes of Se, i.e. intakes greater than those required for selenocysteine enzyme expression, appear to reduce cancer risk. The lower, nutritional, level is greater than the typical intakes of many people in several parts of the world, and few populations have intakes approaching the latter, supranutritional, level. Accordingly, low Se status is likely to contribute to morbidity and mortality due to infectious as well as chronic diseases, and increasing Se intakes in all parts of the world can be expected to reduce cancer rates.

Abstract
AbstractBackground: Selenium is an essential trace element that also elicits toxic effects at modest intakes. Investigations of selenium metabolites in urine can help our understanding of the transformations taking place in the body that produce these beneficial and detrimental effects. There is, however, considerable discord in the scientific literature regarding the selenium metabolites thought to play important roles in these biotransformation processes.Approach: We critically assessed the published reports on selenium urinary metabolites, from the first report in 1969 to the present, in terms of the rigor of the data on which structures have been proposed.Content: We present and discuss data from ∼60 publications reporting a total of 16 identified selenium metabolites in urine of humans or rats, a good model for human selenium metabolism. We assessed the analytical methods used and the validity of the ensuing structural assignments.Summary: Many of the studies of selenium metabolites in urine appear to have assigned incorrect structures to the compounds. The long-held view that trimethylselenonium ion is a major human urinary metabolite appears unjustified. On the other hand, recent work describing selenosugars as major urinary metabolites looks sound and provides a firm basis for future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was undertaken to investigate the metabolism of selenite in men with life-long intakes of deficient, adequate and excess selenium. METHODS Stable isotopes of selenium were infused for five hours into Chinese men living in deficient, adequate or excessive selenium areas, and 24-hour urine and blood samples were collected daily for the next seven days. Stable isotopic selenium excretion was determined in urine and in whole plasma and plasma fractions. RESULTS Even though there was a positive correlation of selenium intake with the urinary excretion of this element, this relationship was not linear over the entire range (deficient, adequate, excessive) of selenium intake. When the urine excretion was normalized internally within each group, a sharp increase in the slope of this relationship was found when long-term intake increased to adequate amounts, but the slope reached a plateau when the daily intake exceeded the adequate group. The plasma selenoprotein P fraction was labeled initially, but the incorporation in the glutathione peroxidase fraction subsequently increased by a small amount. A two-month dietary restriction of selenium of the subjects from the excess area did not result in a reduction of urinary excretion of infused selenite. CONCLUSION A complex relationship exists between long-term intake of selenium and selenium status, and subjects living in the excess area are more saturated with selenium than anticipated. More than two months of depletion are required to affect urinary excretion of selenium.
