Solution extraction of several lanthanides from nitric acid with isohexyl-BTP in [Cnmim][NTf2] ionic liquid

Liquid-Liquid Extraction of the Eu(III) Cation by BTP Ligands into Ionic Liquids: Interfacial Features and Extraction Mechanisms Investigated by MD Simulations

What happens at the ionic-liquid (IL)/water interface when the Eu³⁺ cation is complexed and extracted by bis(dimethyltriazinyl) pyridine "BTP" ligands has been investigated by molecular dynamics and potential of mean force simulations on the interface crossing by key species: neutral BTP, its protonated BTPH⁺ form, Eu³⁺, and the Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ complex. At both the [BMI][Tf₂N]/water and [OMI][Tf₂N]/water interfaces, neither BTP nor Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ are found to adsorb. The distribution of Eu(BTP)₂³⁺ and Eu(BTP)³⁺ precursors of Eu(BTP)₃³⁺, and of their nitrate adducts, implies the occurrence of a stepwise complexation process in the interfacial domain, however. The analysis of the ionic content of the bulk phases and of their interface before and after extraction highlights the role of charge buffering by interfacial IL cations and anions, by different amounts depending on the IL. Comparison of ILs with octanol as the oil phase reveals striking differences regarding the extraction efficiency, the affinity of Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ for the interface, the effects of added nitric acid and of counterions (NO₃^- vs Tf₂N^-), charge neutralization mechanisms, and the extent of "oil" heterogeneity. Extraction into octanol is suggested to proceed via adsorption at the surface of water pools, nanoemulsions, or droplets, with marked counterion effects.

Solvent extraction of rare earths elements from nitrate media in DMDOHEMA/ionic liquid systems: performance and mechanism studies

Extraction of La(iii), Eu(iii) and Fe(iii) was compared in n-dodecane and two ionic liquids (ILs) (1-ethyl-1-butylpiperidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EBPip⁺] [NTf₂⁻] and 1-ethyl-1-octylpiperidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EOPip⁺] [NTf₂⁻]). Using the extractant N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dioctylhexylethoxymalonamide (DMDOHEMA), the effect of pH was investigated in detail to recover extraction mechanisms. The use of ILs as the organic solvent instead of n-dodecane, greatly enhances extraction efficiency, and an ionic liquid with a shorter alkyl chain [EBPip⁺] [NTf₂⁻] provides higher extraction than [EOPip⁺] [NTf₂⁻]. The mechanistic study points out that for low nitric acid concentrations ([HNO₃] ≤ 0.01 M), metal is extracted via a cation of the ionic liquids, while for higher nitric acid concentrations ([HNO₃] ≥ 1.0 M), extraction occurs through pure solvation mechanism of DMDOHEMA as in conventional diluents. This latter case is of high interest for applications, as higher extraction can be obtained without any loss of ILs by ion exchange mechanisms.

Experimental measurements of the permeability characteristics of rare earth ore under the hydro-chemical coupling effect

Two coupling processes-solution seepage and chemical replacement-occur in the in situ leaching process of ion-absorbed-rare-earth ore. In this study, saturated leaching tests were applied to investigate the permeability characteristics of rare earth ore under the hydro-chemical coupling effect. The pore radius distributions based on two leaching solutions (H₂O and (NH₄)₂SO₄) were obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance detection technology. The results indicated that 10-25 μm and 4-10 μm pores are dominant in the ore under solution leaching using H₂O and (NH₄)₂SO₄, respectively. A "black belt" in the pores of (NH₄)₂SO₄ leaching was discovered from the reconstruction of the pore structure distribution image. The results also reveal that the hydraulic conductivity will initially increase, then decrease and finally increase during the leaching process. The hydro-chemical coupling effect will lead to variations in the pore structure and permeability of rare earth ore. The pore radius will increase due to solution seepage, whereas it decreases due to the particle recombination induced by chemical replacement. The permeability of rare earth ore is influenced more by chemical replacement than by solution seepage.
