Deviations from Lindemann behaviour: photoisomerization dynamics of trans-stilbene under collisional gas phase conditions

Photoisomerization of Stilbene: The Detailed XMCQDPT2 Treatment

We report the detailed XMCQDPT2/cc-pVTZ study of trans-cis photoisomerization in one of the core systems of both experimental and computational photochemistry-the stilbene molecule. For the first time, the potential energy surface (PES) of the S1 state has been directly optimized and scanned using a multistate multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory. We characterize the trans-stilbene, pyramidalized (phantom), and DHP-cis-stilbene geometric domains of the S1 state and describe their stationary points including the transition states between them, as well as S1/S0 intersections. Also reported are the minima and the activation barriers in the ground state. Our calculations correctly predict the kinetic isotope effect due to H/D exchange at ethylenic hydrogens, the dynamic behavior of excited cis-stilbene, and trans-cis branching ratio after relaxation to S0 through a rather unsymmetric conical intersection. In general, the XMCQDPT2 results confirm the qualitative adequacy of the TDDFT (especially SF-TDDFT) picture of the excited stilbene but also reveal quantitative discrepancies that deserve further exploration.

Viscosity dependence of intramolecular excimer formation with 1,5-bis(1-pyrenylcarboxy)pentane in alkane solvents as a function of temperature

Intramolecular excimer formation with 1,5-bis(1-pyrenylcarboxy)pentane, (1PC(5)1PC) is studied as a function of temperature in a series of alkane solvents and in toluene, covering a wide range of solvent viscosities η, from 0.2 to 125 cP. The rate constant k(a) of the monomer → excimer reaction is determined from the effectively single exponential monomer fluorescence decays. For the viscosity dependence of k(a) in n-alkanes, the Stokes-Einstein relation k(a) ∼ η(-1.0) does not hold. Instead, k(a) is proportional to η(-α), with α increasing upon cooling, from 0.56 at 85 °C to 0.86 at -30 °C. The activation energy E(a) of excimer formation with 1PC(5)1PC, always larger than the activation energy E(T/η) of solvent viscous flow, decreases when the solvent viscosity becomes smaller, from 20.7 kJ/mol in n-hexadecane to 11.8 kJ/mol in n-butane, approaching a value of 11-12 kJ/mol for the low viscosity solvents. As the excimer formation process depends on the restricted diffusion of the 1PC end groups as well as on the C-O and C-C rotations in the -O(CH(2))(5)O- chain, the limiting barrier of 11-12 kJ/mol is attributed to the activation energy E(c) of the multiple bond rotations. This fractional viscosity dependence (α < 1.0) is caused by the multidimensional character of the barrier crossing in the excimer formation process. This multidimensional character should also be taken into account in investigations of polymers and biological media employing excimer formation.

Solvent Dependent Conformational Relaxation of cis-1,3,5-Hexatriene

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy was used to study the conformational relaxation dynamics of 1,3,5-cis-hexatriene (Z-HT) produced in the photochemical ring-opening reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) in methanol and n-propanol solvents. The results are compared with earlier investigations performed using cyclohexane and hexadecane solvents [Anderson, N. A.; Pullen, S. H.; Walker II, L. A.; Shiang, J. J.; Sension, R. J.; J. Phys. Chem. A 1998, 102, 10588-10598.]. The conformational relaxation between hot cZc-HT, cZt-HT, and tZt-HT, where the labels c and t designate cis and trans configurations about the single bonds, is much faster in alcohol solvents than in alkane solvents. The hot Z-HT produced in the photochemical ring-opening reaction evolves from the conformationally strained cZc-HT form to the more stable cZt-HT form on a time scale of 2 ps in alcohols compared with 6 ps in alkanes. The overall decay of the internal vibrational temperature of the hot Z-HT is faster in alcohols (5-6 ps) than alkanes (12-20 ps) and is weakly dependent on the specific alcohol or alkane solvent. A small population of cZt-HT (5-10%) is trapped as the solute equilibrates with the surrounding solvent following UV excitation of CHD or direct UV excitation of Z-HT. The influence of solvent on conformational relaxation of Z-HT was investigated further by probing the temperature dependence of the decay of this thermally equilibrated cZt-HT population. The apparent barrier for the cZt --> tZt conformational isomerization is lower in alcohols (17.4 kJ/mol) than in alkanes (23.5 kJ/mol). However the equilibrium Arrhenius prefactor (A(h)) is an order of magnitude smaller for alcohols (ca. 4 x 10(12)) than alkanes (ca. 6 x 10(13)) resulting in an absolute rate of decay that is faster in the alkane than in the alcohol solvents. These results are discussed in the context of transition state theory and Kramers' theory for condensed phase reaction dynamics.

Fluorescence Excitation Spectrum, Lifetimes and Photoisomerization of Jet-Cooled Conformers of 1,1´-bi(benzocyclobutylidene)

First measurements of fluorescence excitation spectra of the recently synthesized rigid stilbene analogue 1,1´-bi(benzocyclobutylidene) in asupersonic jet expansion show that, in contrast to the parent compound, both the
