Hydrogen bonding interactions between indole and benzenoid-pi-bases

The NH-pi interactions of indole with benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, toluene, m-xylene, and mesitilene, in carbon tetrachloride solutions, have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The experiments, carried out on the NH stretching band of indole, prove the formation of 1:1 complexes in which the NH bond of indole is engaged. The NH frequency shifts are independent of the number of rings in the base, but they progressively increase as the electron density is enhanced by methylation. The association constants increase with the increase of both, the number of rings and the methyl groups on the base. At higher base concentrations, further shifts on the free NH and associated bands indicate the formation of 1:2 complexes, which suggest hybride NH-pi and van der Waals interactions between one indole ring and two benzene acceptor molecules.

Photophysical properties of methyl beta-carboline-3-carboxylate mediated by hydrogen-bonded complexes--a comparative study in different solvents

The hydrogen bonding interactions of methyl beta-carboline-3-carboxylate (BCCM) in both ground and first singlet excited electronic states have been studied in solvents with different properties in the presence of acetic acid, a hydrogen-bonding donor/acceptor. The methyl ester substituent reduces the pyridinic nitrogen basicity of this beta-carboline derivative. This fact has let us study the hydrogen bonding interactions in a higher range of acetic acid concentrations than for other beta-carboline derivatives previously studied. Steady and non-steady photophysical studies have been carried out in two non-polar solvents, benzene and p-dioxane; and in two polar solvents, acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Six different fluorescence emissions have been isolated corresponding to the uncomplexed BCCM, the protonated species and four different complexes between BCCM and acetic acid whose structures we have tried to elucidate.

Molecular-level investigation of monoaromatic compound sorption to suspended soil particles by deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance

Molecular-level sorption behavior of monoaromatic compounds in suspensions of water-dispersable clay components was studied by measuring 2H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-spin relaxation times (T2). In general, decreased T2 values indicate stronger solute-sorbent interactions and increased sorption of the solute. A decreasing trend for T2 values in the order benzene > fluorobenzene > toluene (-C6D5 moiety) was observed, which was probably caused by the hydrophobic effect. The T2 values for benzene and the -C6D5 moiety of toluene increased with increasing pH, whereas the trend with pH was much weaker and less consistent for fluorobenzene and the methyl group of toluene. Conversely, no clear relationship was found between T2 values and pH for dichloromethane. These contrasting results cannot be explained by the pH-dependent self-assembly and hydrophobicity of humics. Instead, directed specific forces, including hydrogen bonding, cation-pi interactions, and aromatic-aromatic interactions, are proposed between the benzene ring of monoaromatic solutes and soil organic matter (SOM). Substituents of benzene affect these interactions by varying the pi electron density. When the soil fraction was treated with NaOH to remove humic and fulvic acids, T2 values for the different monoaromatic solutes were surprisingly lower compared with those for the untreated soil fraction. This result is probably caused by the increased ratio of solutes adsorbed to "hard" or "glassy" SOM components, which leads to less mobile sorbed solute molecules, after removing NaOH-extractable humics that contain more "soft" or "rubbery" SOM components.

Intramolecular and intermolecular N-H...C(5)H(5)(-) hydrogen bonding in magnesocene adducts of alkylamines. Implications for chemical vapor deposition using cyclopentadienyl source compounds

Magnesocene adducts of alkylamines were prepared and characterized. Treatment of 3-amino-2,4-dimethylpentane, isopropylamine, tert-butylamine, benzylamine, or N-isopropylbenzylamine with magnesocene at ambient temperature in toluene afforded the amine adducts Cp2Mg(NH2CH(CH(CH3)2)2) (91%), Cp2Mg(NH2iPr) (80%), Cp2Mg(NH2tBu) (67%), Cp2Mg(NH2CH2Ph) (80%), and Cp2Mg(NH(CH(CH3)2)(CH2C6H5)) (91%). These adducts are stable at ambient temperature, and Cp2Mg(NH2CH(CH(CH3)2)2) can be sublimed at 60 degrees C/0.05 Torr without any evidence for reversion to magnesocene. The solid-state structure of Cp2Mg(NH2CH(CH(CH3)2)2) contains eta5- and eta2-cyclopentadienyl ligands, and the hydrogen atoms on the coordinated amine nitrogen atom participate in intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonding to the eta2-cyclopentadienyl ligand. The observed hydrogen bonding is relevant to the path by which cyclopentadiene is eliminated from metal cyclopentadienyl CVD source compounds during film growth employing acidic element hydrides as co-reactants.
