New copper(II) μ-Alkoxo-μ-carboxylato double-bridged complexes as models for the active site of catechol oxidase: Synthesis, spectral characterization and DFT calculations. Heliyon 2022; 8:e09373. Abstract
A series of four copper(II) μ-Alkoxo-μ-carboxylato double bridged complexes, [{Cu2(L)}2][(μ–O2C–CO2] 1, [{Cu2(L)}2(μ–O2C–(CH2)CO2] 2, [{Cu2(L)}2(μ–O2C–CH2–CO2] 3 and [{Cu2(L)}2(μ–O2C–C6H4–CO2] 4 (H3L = 4-bromo-2-((E)-((3-(((E)-5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino)-2-hydroxypropyl) imino) methyl)-6-methoxyphenol and μ-dicarboxylate ions = oxalate, malonate, succinate and terephthalate) have been synthesized and characterized using several physicochemical techniques. The tridentate nature of H3L is interpreted from IR spectra. The Epr spectra of these complexes are characteristic of the quintet state (S = 2) in central features and the triplet state (S = 1) of these tetranuclear complexes. The electrochemical potential of these complexes was investigated using CV (cyclic voltammetry) and DPV (differential pulse voltammetry). All complexes showed quasi reversible reduction peaks in the cathodic region. To explore the stability of these complexes, quantum chemical parameters like electronegativity, ionization potential, electron affinity, global hardness and softness, and electrophilicity were estimated and discussed. The synthesized complexes have been designed as structural and functional models of the catechol oxidase enzymes to investigate the catecholase activity. Additionally, superoxide dismutase activity data of all complexes have also been evaluated and compared with known SOD mimics.

Abstract
Doubly bridged mu-alkoxo-mu-X (X = pyrazolato or acetato) dinuclear MnIII complexes of 2-hydroxy-N-{2-hydroxy-3-[(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino]propyl}benzamide) (H5L1) and 2-hydroxy-N-{2-hydroxy-4-[(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino]butyl}benzamide (H5L2), [Mn2(L)(pz)(MeOH)4].xMeOH (1, L = L1, x = 0.5; 2, L = L2, x = 0; Hpz = pyrazole) and [Mn2(L1)(OAc)(MeOH)4] (3), have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been studied. Magnetic susceptibility data evidence antiferromagnetic interactions for all three complexes: J = -3.6 cm-1, D approximately 0 cm-1, g = 1.93 (1); J = -2.7 cm-1, D = 0.8 cm-1, g = 1.93 (2); J = -4.9 cm-1, D = 3.8 cm-1, g = 1.95 (3).

Abstract
The new homodinuclear complexes, [Cu(2)(II)(HLdtb)(mu-OCH(3))](ClO(4))(2) (1) and [Cu(2)(II)(Ldtb)(mu-OCH(3))](BPh(4)) (2), with the unsymmetrical N(5)O(2) donor ligand (H(2)Ldtb) - {2-[N,N-Bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-6-[N',N'-(3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl-2-hydroxy)(2-pyridylmethyl)]aminomethyl}-4-methylphenol have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. In both cases the structure reveals that the complexes have a common {Cu(II)(mu-phenoxo)(mu-OCH(3))Cu(II)} structural unit. Magnetic susceptibility studies of 1 and 2 reveal J values of -38.3 cm(-1) and -2.02 cm(-1), respectively, and that the degree of antiferromagnetic coupling is strongly dependent on the coordination geometries of the copper centers within the dinuclear {Cu(II)(mu-OCH(3))(mu-phenolate)Cu(II)} structural unit. Solution studies in dichloromethane, using UV-Visible spectroscopy and electrochemistry, indicate that under these experimental conditions the first coordination spheres of the Cu(II) centers are maintained as observed in the solid state structures, and that both forms can be brought into equilibrium ([Cu(2)(HLdtb)(mu-OCH(3))](2+)=[Cu(2)(Ldtb)(mu-OCH(3))](+)+H(+)) by adjusting the pH with Et(3)N (Ldtb(2-) is the deprotonated form of the ligand). On the other hand, potentiometric titration studies of 1 in an ethanol/water mixture (70:30 V/V; I=0.1M KCl) show three titrable protons, indicating the dissociation of the bridging CH(3)O(-) group. The catecholase activity of 1 and 2 in methanol/water buffer (30:1 V/V) demonstrates that the deprotonated form is the active species in the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol and that the reaction follows Michaelis-Menten behavior with k(cat)=5.33 x 10(-3)s(-1) and K(M)=3.96 x 10(-3)M. Interestingly, 2 can be electrochemically oxidized with E(1/2)=0.27 V vs.Fc(+)/Fc (Fc(+)/Fc is the redox pair ferrocinium/ferrocene), a redox potential which is believed to be related to the formation of a phenoxyl radical. Since these complexes are redox active species, we analyzed their activity toward the nucleic acid DNA, a macromolecule prone to oxidative damage. Interestingly these complexes promoted DNA cleavage following an oxygen dependent pathway.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of dinuclear [M(II)(dbcat)(idpa)](2) (M[double bond]Zn (1), Cu (3); dbcat[double bond]3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate; idpa[double bond]3,3'-iminobis(N,N-dimethylpropylamine)) complexes are described. Crystallographic characterization of the complex [Cu(II)(dbcat)(idpa)](2) has shown that the co-ordination geometry around copper(II) ions is distorted square pyramidal (triclinic, P-1, a=10.576(1) A, b=11.927(1) A, c=12.621(1) A, alpha=77.89(1) degrees, beta=88.65(1) degrees, gamma=70.21(1) degrees, V=1462.7(2) A(3), Z=2, R=0.0387). Both 1 and 3 were suitable catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of dbcatH(2) to dtbq (dtbq=3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone) with dioxygen at ambient conditions in good yields. However, on the basis of kinetic studies the copper- and zinc-catalyzed reactions showed different mechanisms. In the first case valence tautomerism [Cu(II)(dbcat)(idpa)]<==>[Cu(I)(dbsq)(idpa)] precedes the reaction with O(2), while with the zinc complex metal-bound catecholate reacts directly with O(2) with the formation of free superoxide anion.
