Abstract
Although there have been a growing number of studies focusing on dog welfare, the research field concerning dog positive-emotion assessment remains mostly unexplored. This paper aims to provide a state-of-the-art review and summary of the scattered and disperse research on dog positive-emotion assessment. The review notably details the current advancement in dog positive-emotion research, what approaches, measures, methods, and techniques have been implemented so far in emotion perception, processing, and response assessment. Moreover, we propose possible future research directions for short-term emotion as well as longer-term emotional states assessment in dogs. The review ends by identifying and addressing some methodological limitations and by pointing out further methodological research needs.

Abstract
Searching, defined for the purpose of the present study as the displacement of an individual to locate resources, is a fundamental behavior of all mobile organisms. In humans this behavior underlies many aspects of everyday life, involving cognitive processes such as sustained attention, memory and inhibition. We explored the performance of 36 treatment-free children diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 132 children from a control school sample on the ecologically based ball-search field task (BSFT), which required them to locate and collect golf balls in a large outdoor area. Children of both groups enjoyed the task and were motivated to participate in it. However, performance showed that ADHD-diagnosed subjects were significantly less efficient in their searching. We suggest that the BSFT provides a promising basis for developing more complex ecologically-derived tests that might help to better identify particular cognitive processes and impairments associated with ADHD.

Abstract
AbstractEmotions seem to arise ultimately from hard-wired neural circuits in the visceral-limbic brain that facilitate diverse and adaptive behavioral and physiological responses to major classes of environmental challenges. Presumably these circuits developed early in mammalian brain evolution, and the underlying control mechanisms remain similar in humans and “lower” mammals. This would suggest that theoretically guided studies of the animal brain can reveal how primitive emotions are organized in the human brain. Conversely, granted this cross-species heritage, it is arguable that human introspective access to emotional states may provide direct information concerning operations of emotive circuits and thus be a primary source of hypotheses for animal brain research. In this article the possibility that emotions are elaborated by transhypothalamic executive (command) circuits that concurrently activate related behavior patterns is assessed. Current neurobehavioral evidence indicates that there are at least four executive circuits of this type – those which elaborate central states of expectancy, rage, fear, and panic. The manner in which learning and psychiatric disorders may arise from activities of such circuits is also discussed.

Abstract
The primate dopamine system is involved in appetitively motivated behaviours, including certain forms of learning, for example, visual discrimination learning. Furthermore, food restriction in animals and anorexia in humans is associated with impaired dopamine signaling. Based on this, we hypothesized that patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) would show a deficit in visual discrimination learning. In a dynamic categorization task involving the learning of a series of two-alternative forced-choice visual discriminations, conceptually identical to one shown to activate dopamine neurons in primates, and sensitive to dopaminergic manipulations in humans, patients with AN showed a deficit in learning that was most pronounced in the early stages of acquisition. In contrast, AN showed spared performance on a pattern recognition memory test sensitive to medial temporal lobe lesions, but insensitive to dopaminergic manipulations. We conclude that impaired appetitive function in patients with AN extends to include deficits in visual discrimination learning, and that this deficit represents indirect evidence for altered dopaminergic neurotransmission in AN.

Abstract
Intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) was obtained from 3 areas of anteromedial cortex: the prelimbic area (Brodman's area 32), the anterior cingulate area and the posterior cingulate area. Electrical stimulation in the prelimbic and anterior cingulate areas also produces a behavioral inhibition which is most pronounced at anterior sites (i.e. prelimbic) and declines at increasingly more posterior sites. It was found that the acquisition of responding for ICSS and the magnitude of amphetamine's facilitation of ICSS were inversely related to the degree of behavioral inhibition. These data and the ability of amphetamine to reverse prefrontal stimulation-induced inhibition suggest an important interaction between the prefrontal cortex and the mesolimbic dopamine systems in the control of goal-directed behavior. A model involving cortical suppression of mesolimbic dopamine function is discussed.
