Abstract
PURPOSE Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and substantially decreases socioemotional well-being and health-related quality of life. Analyzing temporal patterns in depressive symptoms can reveal emerging risks that require attention and have implications for mental health promotion. The present study disentangled age, period, and cohort (APC) effects on trends in depressive symptoms and their gender disparities among China's nationally representative samples of middle-aged and older adults. METHODS Using four-wave data (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 65455), APC effects were quantified based on the hierarchical APC model. The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) was used to measure depressive symptoms. RESULTS Depressive symptoms increased during late life and stabilized after reaching an advanced age. After further adjusting for individual characteristics, depressive symptoms exhibited a negative trend with advancing age. The mean levels of depressive symptoms remained stable during the study period. Depressive symptoms varied significantly across cohorts, with those born in 1949-1951 having the most severe depressive symptoms. Significant life-course and cohort variations existed in the gender gaps in depressive symptoms. Although women had higher mean scores on the CES-D-10 scale throughout the life course, the gender gaps in depressive symptoms gradually narrowed with age, as depressive symptoms decreased more rapidly among women. A widening trend in gender gaps in depressive symptoms was found among those born after the mid-1950s, mainly driven by a notable decline in depressive symptoms among men CONCLUSIONS: The convergence of living conditions between genders in late life, as a result of traditional Chinese culture, may have narrowed the gender gap in depressive symptoms. However, given the widening gender disparities in depressive symptoms among younger cohorts, more attention should be paid to women's mental health in the context of China's rapid socioeconomic development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Depression is common amongst Australian residential aged care services (RACS) residents. This study aimed to estimate the risk of depression amongst residents and identify factors associated with this risk. In care settings such as RACS, time-efficient screening tools to identify depression risk may be a preferred tool. METHODS The two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), derived from the nine-item PHQ-9 used commonly in the United States (US), was employed in this study. A resident was identified as being at risk of depression where the score was ≥3. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent factors associated with being at risk of depression. RESULTS Residents' mean age was 87.7 (standard deviation: 7.3) years and 73% were female. One-fifth of residents (n = 108 or 20%) were at risk of depression. Age (odds ratio [OR] 0.96, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.93-0.99); Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia (PAINAD) score (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.11-2.16); Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03-1.13); and 38-item Frailty Index (FI) score (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.03-1.10) were significantly associated with being at risk of depression, whilst sex, urinary incontinence, polypharmacy, Dementia Severity Rating Scale (DSRS) and Nursing Home Life Space Diameter (NHLSD) score were not. CONCLUSIONS One in five residents were at risk of depression. Younger age, higher pain, higher daytime sleepiness and higher frailty status were associated with depressive risk. Future studies focusing on interventions targeting these factors may contribute to improved health outcomes.

Abstract
The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) has been used in various countries to assess the mental states of individuals. The objectives of this study were to validate the DASS-21 for use in Guam, an island that endures a high burden of mental health challenges, such as suicide, and examine the predictive impact of selected health indicators on DASS-21 variables. Three years of data (2017-2019) were pooled from the Pacific Islands Cohort of College Students (PICCS) study conducted annually at the University of Guam. In total, 726 students were included in the secondary data analysis. MPlus statistical software was used to perform a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for the validation and structural equation modeling (SEM) for the predictive modeling. The results from the CFA suggested an acceptable model fit (RMSEA: 0.073, CFI: 0.901, TLI: 0.889, RMR: 0.044), while SEM suggested that sleep quality and physical activity were significant predictors of DASS-21 variables. Therefore, the DASS-21 is a valid instrument for measuring depression, anxiety, and stress among emerging adults in Guam.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Climate change threatens well-being and has increased the prevalence of weather-related disasters. We investigated age differences in emotional well-being among adults who had experienced hurricane-related, unavoidable stressors. Socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) posits that age-related motivational shifts buffer older adults against psychological distress, whereas the strength and vulnerability integration model (SAVI) posits that unavoidable stressors are more detrimental to older adults' well-being compared to younger adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We used existing self-report data from a life-span sample of adults (N = 618, M age = 58.44 years, standard deviation = 16.03, 18-96 years) who resided in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. The sample was recruited in 2016 to examine the sequelae of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and contacted again after the 2017 and 2018 hurricane seasons. In 2016, participants reported their depression, anxiety, and trauma history. After the 2017-2018 hurricane seasons, participants reported their depression, post-traumatic stress, exposure to hurricane-related adversities, injuries and casualties, self-efficacy, and perceived health. RESULTS In line with SST, older age was associated with reporting significantly fewer depression and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, even after controlling for exposure to hurricane-related adversities, injuries and casualties, health, self-efficacy, pre-hurricane depression, anxiety, and trauma. The association between older age and fewer depression symptoms was stronger among those who experienced hurricane-related adversities compared to those who had not, in contrast to predictions based on SAVI. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS We discuss the implications of age-related strengths in emotional well-being for policy and practice in the context of the ongoing climate crisis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressed mood affects a significant number of patients with cancer, and can impair their quality of life and interfere with successful treatment. Our study aims to create a predictive model for identifying high-risk groups of depressed mood in cancer patients, offering a theoretical support for preventing depressed mood in these individuals. METHODS The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) provided the data for this research, which used CES-D as a tool to identify individuals with depressed mood. Influencing factors of depressed mood in cancer patients was analyzed using a binary logistic regression model. Using the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified the high-risk patients for depressed mood. RESULTS In present study, 52.96 % of cancer patients met criteria for depressed mood based on the CES-D. Significant correlations were found between depressed mood and factors such as gender, self-rated health, sleep duration, exercise, satisfaction with family, residence, education, life satisfaction, and medical insurance. Utilizing the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified patients into five risk levels for depressed mood, revealing a significant variation in the number of depressive patients across these levels (x2=99.82, P < 0.05). Notably, the incidence of depressed mood increased with the risk level among cancer patients (x2=103.40, P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS Lack of data on tumor typing and subgroups makes it unlikely to explore the specifics of depressed mood in patients with various types of cancer. CONCLUSION The determinants of depressed mood in cancer patients are multi-dimensional. The Harvard Cancer Index may be helpful in identifying high-risk populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the impact of resistance training on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and depression among older adults aged 60 years or older. METHOD Four electronic databases were systematically searched. RESULTS A total of 11 randomized controlled trials, with a pooled sample of 868 participants, met our inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis demonstrated that resistance training significantly improved circulating BDNF levels (mean difference; MD: 0.73 ng/ml; 95% CI [0.04, 1.42]; p = 0.04). Additionally, resistance training was associated with significant improvements in depression (standardized mean difference; SMD: -0.38; 95% CI [- 0.62, -0.14]; p = 0.002). DISCUSSION These findings suggest that resistance training may be an effective intervention for improving BDNF levels and reducing depression symptoms in older adults. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and to investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Neurosteroid and immunological actions of vitamin D may regulate depression-linked physiology. Meta-analyses investigating the effect of vitamin D on depression have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of vitamin D in reducing depressive symptoms among adults in randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCT). General and clinical populations, and studies of ill individuals with systemic diseases were included. Light therapy, co-supplementation (except calcium) and bipolar disorder were exclusionary. Databases Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant articles in English published before April 2022. Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (RoB 2) and GRADE were used to appraise studies. Forty-one RCTs (n = 53,235) were included. Analyses based on random-effects models were performed with the Comprehensive Meta-analysis Software. Results for main outcome (n = 53,235) revealed a positive effect of vitamin D on depressive symptoms (Hedges' g = -0.317, 95% CI [-0.405, -0.230], p < 0.001, I2 = 88.16%; GRADE: very low certainty). RoB assessment was concerning in most studies. Notwithstanding high heterogeneity, vitamin D supplementation ≥ 2,000 IU/day appears to reduce depressive symptoms. Future research should investigate possible benefits of augmenting standard treatments with vitamin D in clinical depression. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020149760. Abstract
Introduction The global aging population poses challenges for society such as health inequalities among older persons and between genders. Objectives To determine how Social Determinants of Health (SDH) influence the quality of life (QoL) of individuals over 50 years old in various European countries, taking a gender perspective in a longitudinal study. Materials and methods Sample of 11,493 individuals from 13 European countries from Waves 5 (2013), 6 (2015), and 7 (2017) of the SHARE study. Instruments: CASP-12 (QoL), EURO-D (depression), SDH: gender, age, educational level, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, place of residence, and European region. Sociodemographic and clinical variables. Statistical analysis: Bivariate and multivariate mixed linear models. Results The bivariate analysis showed higher economic hardship and lower education in women compared to men. The CASP-12 score was higher in men than in women. In the multivariate analysis, the variables associated with lower QoL scores among men and women from Wave 5 to Wave 7 were: (β:-0.196, 95% CI: -0.345; -0.047) vs (β:0.038, 95% CI: -0.122; 0.197); economic hardship; and the European region between South and North (β: 2.709, 95% CI: 2.403; 3.015) vs men (β: 2.224, 95% CI: 1.896; 2.551). Conclusions The main SDH associated with poorer QoL were female gender, advanced age, economic hardship, educational level, and geographic location within Europe. Depression in women and in Southern Europe were associated with a decrease in QoL scores.

OBJECTIVES The study aims to investigate the relationships among oral hygiene behavior, toothache, and depression among Chinese older adults. METHODS We used data came from the 2018 wave of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale was used to evaluate depression. Binary logistic regression was performed to analyze the relationships among oral hygiene behavior, toothache, and depression. RESULTS A total of 12,172 older adults were included in the study, of whom 27.2% had depression. Compared with those who did not brush their teeth daily, those who brushed their teeth at least once daily exhibited lower odds of having depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.77-0.97 versus OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.71-0.93). Compared with those who did not have toothache, those who had toothache over the past 6 months exhibited higher odds of having depression (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.33-1.68). Living arrangement had a significant effect on the correlation between toothache and depression (p = 0.049), who lived alone and had toothache exhibited higher odds of having depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Oral hygiene behavior and toothache are associated with depression. Taking effective measures to maintain a daily toothbrushing pattern and reduce the occurrence of toothache may mitigate the risk of depression among older adults, especially among those living alone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present study reports that the potential relationship between different oral hygiene behavior, toothache, and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
A growing body of evidence is suggestive for the beneficial role of contact with greenspace (e.g., use of greenspace, visual access to greenspace, etc.) on mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.). In addition, several studies have pointed out the benefits of social support and social interaction on psychological wellbeing. Even if evidence on the association between contact with greenspace and perceived social support were mixed, it was supposed that the use of greenspace could enhance social interactions and perceived social support, especially among older adults. The present study aims to explore the effect of use of greenspace on geriatric depression in a sample of South-Italian older adults and the mediating role of perceived social support in this association. A structural equation model was tested in a sample of 454 older adults (60-90 years old) residing in the Metropolitan Area of Bari, Apulia. The fit indices revealed the goodness of fit of the model (CFI = 0.934; TLI = 0.900; IFI = 0.911; NFI = 0.935; RMSEA = 0.074; SRMR = 0.056). Results showed that the use of greenspace was inversely associated with geriatric depression through perceived social support. These findings underlined the relevance of perceived social support on the pathway linking use of greenspace and geriatric depressive symptoms. This evidence may be useful to policymakers to plan interventions for promoting physical access to greenspace and social participation in an age-friendly city framework.

Abstract
Depression is a serious public health problem today, especially in middle-aged and older adults. Although the etiology of the disease has not been fully elucidated, environmental factors are increasingly not negligible. Cadmium is widely used in industrial production. The general population may be chronically exposed to low doses of cadmium. This study aimed to investigate the association between blood cadmium and depression and to explore the mediating role of aging indicators in this process. We conducted a cross-sectional study on blood cadmium (N = 7195, age ≥ 20 years) using data from the 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Aging indicators (biological and phenotypic age) are calculated by combining multiple biochemical and/or functional indicators. To determine the relationship between blood cadmium concentrations and depressive symptoms, we used weighted multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline functions and employed mediation analysis to explore the possible mediating effects of aging indicators in the process. We found a significant positive association between blood cadmium and depression with an odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22 (1.04,1.43). Restricted cubic spline analysis found a linear positive association between blood cadmium and depression. In the fully covariate-adjusted model, we found a positive association between blood cadmium and biological age and phenotypic age with β and 95% CI: 1.02 (0.65, 1.39) and 2.35 (1.70, 3.01), respectively. In the mediation analysis, we found that phenotypic age mediated 21.32% of the association between blood cadmium and depression. These results suggest that even exposure to low doses of cadmium can increase the risk of depression and that this process may be mediated by phenotypic aging.

Abstract
Background Depressive disorders have become an increasingly significant public health issue. This study is intended to show the trend of the incidence of depressive disorders in China, the United States, India and the world from 1990 to 2019, as well as the impact of age, period and cohort on it. Methods Extracting incidence data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we determined trends in the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) using Joinpoint regression. An age-period-cohort analysis was implemented to describe the effects of age, period, and cohort, as well as the long-term tendencies. Results From 1990 to 2019, the ASIR of depressive disorders in China was lower than that in the United States; India is lower than the United States in the first 5 years, showing a downward trend. The incidence in India and the United States is higher than the global average. The ASIR of women in the three countries is higher than that of men. In China, the elderly, early period and people born around 1954 have a higher risk of depressive disorders. In the United States, young people born around 1999 have a higher risk of depressive disorders. India is similar to China. Conclusion From 1990 to 2019, the age effect of China as a whole increased, and the period became stable, and the cohort effect declined. The overall age and period effects of the United States reduced, while the cohort effect increased. The age effect in India increased, while the period and cohort effects decreased. Depressive disorders are becoming ever more serious worldwide, and we'd better take measures to reduce its incidence according to the cohort effect of each age group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The comorbidity between substance use disorder and major depressive disorder is a typical dual diagnosis in the field of substance addiction. However, the prevalence and correlates of depression in methamphetamine addicts and whether it is associated with drug craving and alexithymia have been rarely reported in the Chinese population. METHODS We recruited 585 methamphetamine-dependent males from a drug rehabilitation center in China and 203 healthy controls. Demographic and drug use data were collected. Depression was assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N·I.). Methamphetamine cravings and alexithymia were assessed using the Desire for Drugs Questionnaire (DDQ) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). RESULTS The prevalence rate of depression in methamphetamine-dependent men was 16.58 % (97/585). The scores of DDQ desire and intention, DDQ negative reinforcement, total DDQ, difficulty identifying feelings (DIF), difficulty describing feelings (DDF), and total TAS score of depressed patients were higher than those of non-depressed patients. However, only DDQ negative reinforcement score, DIF, DDF, and total TAS score remained significant after Bonferroni correction. Additionally, logistic regression analysis found that age, DIF score, and DDQ negative reinforcement score were significant factors contributing to depression in methamphetamine-dependent men. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that the prevalence of depression is significantly higher in methamphetamine-dependent men than in the healthy Chinese population. Furthermore, age, components of alexithymia and drug craving are risk factors for depression in methamphetamine addicts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nature of the Canadian population 65+ has changed considerably over the past several decades. They comprise a larger proportion of the population, are better educated, and are wealthier than previous generations. We estimate the contributions of chronological aging, temporal periods, and birth cohort effects on the trends in the major depressive episode (MDE) prevalence among Canadian seniors from 1994/1995 to 2017/2018. METHODS Using data from two sets of national health surveys, the National Population Health Survey (NPHS) and the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). Pooled data on 150,246 survey respondents aged 65+ from 16 repeated cross-sectional surveys are included. Hierarchical regression age-period-cohort models were used to visualize the linear and non-linear effects of age, period, and cohort trends in late-life depression. RESULTS We found that: the prevalence of MDE in later life fluctuated non-significantly during the study time period; the probability of developing MDE declined with increasing age from 65 to 80+ (β = -.32, p = .027). The significant quadratic birth cohort predictor showed a non-linear increasing association with the prevalence of MDE from the earlier to later-born cohorts (β = .01, p = .049). We also found that females 65+ were consistently more likely to be depressed than males 65+ (β = .47, p = .007). The significantly negative "age × female" interaction shows that age exerts a greater effect on females' probability of developing MDE than males (β = -.09, p = .011). There were no consistent significant period effects but there were peaks in prevalence around 2001, 2008, and 2012 which corresponded to some recent historical events. Our moderation analysis documents that lower levels of education significantly contributed to the higher rates of depression among cohorts born earlier in the 20th century. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show the presence of strong chronological age and cohort effects and weaker period effects on the prevalence of late-life depression in Canadian seniors.

Abstract
Purpose Little is known about the mental health of the Hakka elderly. This study explores the status of, and factors associated with mental health among Hakka elderly populations from Fujian, China. Methods This is a cross-sectional, community-based survey study containing a total of 1,262 valid samples. The Chinese version Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) was used to assess the mental health status of the Hakka elderly. We used t-tests to compare the differences for 10 dimensions of SCL-90-R scores between the Chinese national norm and the Hakka elderly. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed by using linear regression analysis to identify the main socio-demographic factors that were most predictive of the total score of SCL-90-R in the Hakka elderly. Results The scores of somatization (1.78 ± 0.55 vs. 1.40 ± 0.46, P < 0.001) and phobic anxiety (1.21 ± 0.36 vs. 1.17 ± 0.31, P < 0.001) for the Hakka elderly in Fujian appeared to be significantly higher than the Chinese norm. The higher total scores of SCL-90-R were found among females (β = 0.030, P = 0.044), widowed persons (β = 0.053, P = 0.021), those with parent(s) alive (β = 0.047, P = 0.019), and those with poorer self-rated health status (β = 0.110, P < 0.001). The lower total scores of SCL-90-R were found among those who were currently living in town, those with lower education level, those with higher average annual household incomes, and those who were living with spouse or children. Conclusion The worse mental health conditions of the Hakka elderly in somatization and phobic anxiety were detected. The overall mental health status was shown to be worse among females, widowed persons, those who were living in village, those with lower education, and those with father or/and mother alive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression has been identified as one of the leading causes of the disease burden worldwide. Identification of the potential factors that increased or decreased the risk of depression could be important to provide prevention strategies. We aimed to conduct an umbrella review of risk factors for depression in the elderly and assessed the credibility of evidence of the association between each factor and depression. METHODS We searched PubMed and Web of Science from 1990 to April 11, 2021 for articles investigating associations between potential factors and depression. For each association, we recalculated the summary effect size and 95% confidence intervals using random effects models. The 95% prediction interval and between-heterogeneity were also reported. For publication bias, small-study effect and excess of significance bias were assessed. RESULTS Twenty-five publications met the inclusion criteria, including twenty-two meta-analyses and three qualitative systematic reviews. Approximately 1,199,927 participants and 82 unique factors were reported. Two factors were rated as convincing evidence and four factors showed highly suggestive evidence. These risk factors were aspirin use, individuals aged 80 years and above, sleep disturbances and persistent sleep disturbances, hearing problem, poor vision, and cardiac disease. LIMITATIONS Most studies that we included were of low quality. CONCLUSIONS We found several risk factors for depression with different levels of evidence, in which aspirin use and individuals aged 80 years and above presented the strongest evidence. Further research is warranted to support other findings from this umbrella review using a large, well-designed cohort study.

Abstract
Late-life depression is a condition that affects an ever-growing share of the population in ageing societies. While depression prevalence varies across countries for a myriad of reasons, generational factors, expressed in the shared experience of birth cohorts, may also play a part in such differentials. This paper describes the presence of age, period, and cohort (APC) effects in late-life depression prevalence trends (for adults aged 50 and above) for selected countries in Europe, using the Survey of Health and Ageing and Retirement of Europe (SHARE). We analysed six countries during the 2004-2016 period: Denmark, Sweden, and Germany, with a lower baseline prevalence, and Italy, Spain, and France, with a higher baseline prevalence. By applying a set of APC statistical models to visualise linear and nonlinear effects, we found that all countries followed a J-shaped curve when describing the transversal and longitudinal age trajectories of late-life depression. We also found a combination of nonlinear effects present in Germany, France and Sweden in males, indicating that younger male cohorts had a higher relative risk of depression. In females, we found nonlinear cohort effects, indicating that younger and older cohorts presented a higher risk of depression in Sweden and Germany and a lower risk in Spain. The presence of an increased risk for younger male cohorts may be indicative of a new trend in some countries, which may reduce the sex gap in prevalence. Future analysis should focus on the causes and mechanisms that lead to differential risks across cohorts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We studied sociodemographic and health factors associated with depression across three age groups of community-dwelling older adults. METHODS/DESIGN We used data from 16,785 participants from the third follow-up of the Singapore Chinese Health Study (mean age: 73, range: 61-96 years). We defined depression as having a score of ≥5 using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. We used regression splines to examine the pattern of depression risk with age and applied multivariable logistic regression to study factors associated with depression. RESULTS Increasing age was associated with depression in an inverted J-shape relationship with the highest odds ratio (OR) at age 75. Compared to the youngest-old (<70 years), the middle-old (70-80 years) had higher odds of depression [OR = 1.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-1.31], while the oldest-old (>80 years) had no increased risk (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.89-1.15). We also found demographic (men, lower education, unemployment), social (living alone, poor social support, no social activity) and health factors (instrumental limitations, poor physical function, function-limiting pain, chronic diseases, cognitive impairment, poor sleep quality, poor self-rated health) associated with depression. In stratified analysis by age groups, the OR estimates for lower education level, instrumental limitations and cognitive impairment decreased with age, whereas the risk of depression for men increased with age (all p-values for interaction<0.03). CONCLUSIONS Compared to the youngest-old, the likelihood of depression was highest among middle-old adults and decreased to null in the oldest-old. The associations between some factors and depression were attenuated with age, suggesting a coping mechanism among oldest-old survivors.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and severe mental disorder that is usually recurrent and has a high risk of suicide. This disorder manifests not only with psychological symptoms but also multiple changes throughout the body, including increased risks of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Peripheral markers of oxidative stress and inflammation are elevated. MDD is therefore best described as a multisystem whole-body disease. Pharmacological treatment with antidepressants usually requires several weeks before the desired effects manifest. Previous theories of depression, such as the monoamine or neurogenesis hypotheses, do not explain these characteristics well. In recent years, new mechanisms of action have been discovered for long-standing antidepressants that also shed new light on depression, including the sphingolipid system and the receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Depression in older adults is a growing public health concern. However, limited research has focused on the issues of physical environments and depression in the elderly in Asia. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the built environments and depressive symptoms in older adults using Taiwan as an example. METHODS Two national datasets were used in this study, including the 2009 National Health Interview Survey and the 2006 National Land Use Investigation in Taiwan. A total of 2,155 older adults were recruited, and eight built environments were examined among 161 townships. Depressive symptoms were measured using a 10-item CES-D scale, and four sophisticated models were built using a multi-level analysis. RESULTS Five types of built environments were found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. Among them, two types of built environments, 'health and medical services' and 'schools' were highly related to a lower CES-D score and lower odds of being depressed, whereas the other three built environments, 'cultural and historical facilities,' 'recreational and amusement areas,' and 'playgrounds and sports venues' were significantly associated with an increasing risk of being depressed. CONCLUSIONS Different built environments had different effects on depression and some even showed a dose-response relationship. These results can help urban planners or city designers reconsider how to facilitate the construction of built environments in neighborhoods that will improve the mental health of older adults.

Abstract
Depression is a mental illness affecting more than 260 million people worldwide. In Greenland, the prevalence of patients treated with antidepressant medicine (antidepressants) has not previously been investigated. The aim of this study was to estimate and compare the age- and gender-specific prevalence of patients treated with antidepressants in Greenland and Denmark. The study was a cross-sectional register study using data from population and medical registers in Greenland and Denmark. Included was 1,573 Greenlandic patients and 419,151 Danish patients treated with antidepressants, respectively. The overall prevalence of patients aged 10–89 years treated with antidepressants was 3.5% in Greenland, and 8.1% in Denmark, being significantly lower in Greenland compared to Denmark (p < 0.001). The age- and gender-specific prevalence was significantly lower for patients from Greenland compared to from Denmark. In both Greenland and Denmark, the prevalence of women receiving antidepressants was significantly higher than for men. Finally, there was regional differences in the prevalence of usage of antidepressants in Greenland. Undiagnosed depression might contribute to the lower prevalence in Greenland as well as limited access to primary healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic risk factors, low cognitive function and history of depression are known risk factors for future depressive episodes. This paper aims to evaluate the potential interactions between these factors on the risk of a major depressive episodes in middle-age. METHODS Baseline and follow-up data from a population-based study of Quebec, Canada were used. The sample consisted of 1788 adults between 40 and 69 years of age without diabetes. Cognitive function and metabolic risk factors were assessed at baseline. Three cognitive domains were assessed: processing speed, episodic memory and executive function. History of depression was assessed five years later by a clinical interview. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate interactions between individual metabolic factors, low cognitive function, and depression history. RESULTS Participants with a comorbidity of at least one metabolic factor, history of depression and low cognitive function had the highest risk of experiencing a depressive episode in middle age. The highest risk was observed in individuals with abdominal obesity, low cognitive function, and a history of depression (OR= 8.66, 95% CI 3.83-19.59). The risks for those with abdominal obesity only, depression history only, and low cognitive function were 1.20 (95%CI 0.71-2.02), 3.10 (95%CI 1.81-5.24), and 1.39 (95%CI 0.72-2.67), respectively. LIMITATIONS Depression was only assessed at follow-up. CONCLUSION Metabolic risk factors comorbid with low cognitive function in middle-aged individuals with a history of depression were associated with an increased risk of a future depressive episode. This study highlights the importance of screening for metabolic and cognitive comorbidities in patients with a history of depression.

Abstract
Background Air pollutants, particularly fine particulate matters (PM2.5) have been associated with mental disorder such as depression. Clean air policy (CAP, i.e., a series of emission-control actions) has been shown to reduce the public health burden of air pollutions. There were few studies on the health effects of CAP on mental health, particularly, in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We investigated the association between a stringent CAP and depressive symptoms among general adults in China. Methods We used three waves (2011, 2013 and 2015) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a prospective nationwide cohort of the middle-aged and older population in China. We assessed exposure to PM2.5 through a satellite-retrieved dataset. We implemented a difference-in-differences (DID) approach, under the quasi-experimental framework of the temporal contrast between 2011 (before the CAP) and 2015 (after the CAP), to evaluate the effect of CAP on depressive symptoms. The association was further explored using a mixed-effects model of the three waves. To increase the interpretability, the estimated impact of PM2.5 was compared to that of aging, an established risk factor for depression. Findings Our analysis included 15,954 participants. In the DID model, we found a 10-µg/m3 reduction of PM2.5 concentration was associated with a 4.14% (95% CI: 0.41–8.00%) decrement in the depressive score. The estimate was similar to that from the mixed-effects model (3.63% [95% CI, 2.00–5.27%]). We also found improved air quality during 2011–2015 offset the negative impact from 5-years’ aging. Interpretation The findings suggest that implementing CAP may improve mental wellbeing of adults in China and other LMICs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression is the most common mental illness worldwide. It has become an important public health problem. This study aimed to determine the global burden of depression and how it has changed between 1990 and 2017. METHODS We used information on depression obtained by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study from 1990 to 2017. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) were used to assess the global burden of depression. RESULTS The number of incident cases of depression worldwide increased from 172 million in 1990 to 25,8 million in 2017, representing an increase of 49.86%. The ASR of depression varied widely between the 195 analyzed countries and regions in 2017, being highest in Lesotho (6.59 per 1000) and lowest in Myanmar (1.28 per 1000). The ASR increased the most between 1990 and 2017 in Belgium (EAPC = 0.88, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.78 to 0.97), and decreased the most in Cuba (EAPC = -1.26, 95% CI = -1.36 to -1.14). The ASR increased in regions with a high sociodemographic index, such as high-income North America (EAPC = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.31 to 0.51), and decreased significantly in South Asia (EAPC = -0.63, 95% CI = -0.85 to -0.41). The proportions of the population with major depressive disorder and dysthymia were essentially stable both globally and in various countries, with a much larger proportion having major depressive disorder. CONCLUSION Depression remains a major public health issue, and governments should support the research necessary to develop better prevention and treatment interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Population aging is a progressive demographic phenomenon observed in all countries worldwide. The progressive global process of population aging poses many threats, especially in the context of the mental health of the elderly. Third Age Universities are an essential preventive measure shown to improve the quality of life and psychological wellbeing of the elderly. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze the mental status of older persons attending Third Age Universities in Poland, with particular emphasis on sociodemographic sources of variance in psychological indices. METHODS The study included a group of the Third Age University program participants from Poland. A total of 247 persons were enrolled, among them 215 women and 32 men. The study was carried out as a diagnostic survey, using the following validated psychometric scales: The Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Courtauld Emotional Control Scale (CECS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and SMAST-G-Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test-Geriatric Version. RESULTS The vast majority of the respondents did not screen positively for possible bipolar disorder. However, more than 90% of the participants presented with the symptoms of mild depression, and more than one-third had manifestations of non-psychotic mental morbidity. Nearly half of the respondents had complaints associated with insomnia, and in more than one-fourth, SMAST-G score raised suspicion of problem alcohol drinking. Retired participants were shown to present with significantly higher levels of anger control than the occupationally active respondents. Respondents with poor economic status had significantly higher levels of symptoms for non-psychotic mental disorders. Men significantly more often than women showed symptoms raising suspicion of alcohol-related problems. DISCUSSION In conclusion, the study group was characterized primarily by the mild depressive and anxiety symptoms. The mental health of the Polish participants of the Third Age University program was significantly modulated by their socio-occupational and marital status, and financial condition. The study showed that persons with likely problem alcohol drinking differed from other respondents in terms of the occurrence of possible bipolar disorder, depression, and non-psychotic symptoms of mental disorders, state and trait anxiety levels and anger control. There is a need for further research in the field of mental health status in the Third Age Universities seniors to determine the prevalence of these phenomena on a national scale.

Abstract
The development of depression may involve a complex interplay of environmental and genetic risk factors. PubMed and PsycInfo databases were searched from inception through August 3, 2017, to identify meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies of environmental risk factors associated with depression. For each eligible meta-analysis, we estimated the summary effect size and its 95% confidence interval (CI) by random-effects modeling, the 95% prediction interval, heterogeneity with I2, and evidence of small-study effects and excess significance bias. Seventy meta-analytic reviews met the eligibility criteria and provided 134 meta-analyses for associations from 1283 primary studies. While 109 associations were nominally significant (P < 0.05), only 8 met the criteria for convincing evidence and, when limited to prospective studies, convincing evidence was found in 6 (widowhood, physical abuse during childhood, obesity, having 4-5 metabolic risk factors, sexual dysfunction, job strain). In studies in which depression was assessed through a structured diagnostic interview, only associations with widowhood, job strain, and being a Gulf War veteran were supported by convincing evidence. Additionally, 8 MR studies were included and provided no consistent evidence for the causal effects of obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. The proportion of variance explained by genetic risk factors was extremely small (0.1-0.4%), which limited the evidence provided by the MR studies. Our findings suggest that despite the large number of putative risk factors investigated in the literature, few associations were supported by robust evidence. The current findings may have clinical and research implications for the early identification of individuals at risk for depression.

Abstract
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami resulted in widespread property destruction and over 250,000 displaced residents. We sought to examine whether the type of housing arrangement available to the affected victims was associated with a differential incidence of depressive symptoms. In this prospective cohort study, which comprised participants aged ≥65 years from Iwanuma as a part of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, we had information about the residents' mental health both before the disaster in 2010 and 2.5 years afterward. The Geriatric Depression Scale was used. Type of accommodation after the disaster was divided into 5 categories: no move, prefabricated housing (temporary housing), existing private accommodations (temporary apartment), newly established housing, and other. Poisson regression analysis was adopted, with and without multiple imputation. Among the 2,242 participants, 16.2% reported depressive symptoms at follow-up. The adjusted rate ratio for depressive symptoms among persons moving into prefabricated housing, compared with those who did not, was 2.07 (95% confidence interval: 1.45, 2.94). Moving into existing private accommodations or other types of accommodations was not associated with depression. The relationship between living environment and long-term mental health should be considered for disaster recovery planning.

Abstract
This study explores country- and gender-stratified educational differences in depression among older adults from 10 European countries. We examine inequalities in both absolute (prevalence differences) and relative (odds ratios) terms and in bivariate and multivariate models. We use cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the generations and gender survey. The analysis comprises 27,331 Europeans aged 60-80. Depression is measured with a seven-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Findings show considerable between-country heterogeneity in late-life depression. An East-West gradient is evident, with rates of depression up to three times higher in Eastern European than in Scandinavian countries. Rates are about twice as high among women than men in all countries. Findings reveal marked absolute educational gaps in depression in all countries, yet the gaps are larger in weaker welfare states. This pattern is less pronounced for the relative inequalities, especially for women. Some countries observe similar relative inequalities but vastly different absolute inequalities. We argue that the absolute differences are more important for social policy development and evaluation. Educational gradients in depression are strongly mediated by individual-level health and financial variables. Socioeconomic variation in late-life depression is greater in countries with poorer economic development and welfare programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression prevalence in older adults varies largely across studies, which probably reflects methodological rather than true differences. This study aims to explore whether and to what extent the prevalence of depression varies when using different diagnostic criteria and rating scales, and various samples of older adults. METHODS A population-based sample of 3353 individuals aged 60-104 years from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) were examined in 2001-2004. Point prevalence of depression was estimated by: 1) diagnostic criteria, ICD-10 and DSM-IV-TR/DSM-5; 2) rating scales, MADRS and GDS-15; and 3) self-report. Depression prevalence in sub-samples by dementia status, living place, and socio-demographics were compared. RESULTS The prevalence of any depression (including all severity grades) was 4.2% (moderate/severe: 1.6%) for ICD-10 and 9.3% (major: 2.1%) for DSM-IV-TR; 10.6% for MADRS and 9.2% for GDS-15; and 9.1% for self-report. Depression prevalence was lower in the dementia-free sample as compared to the total population. Furthermore, having poor physical function, or not having a partner were independently associated with higher depression prevalence, across most of the depression definitions. LIMITATIONS The response rate was 73.3% and this may have resulted in an underestimation of depression. CONCLUSION Depression prevalence was similar across all depression definitions except for ICD-10, showing much lower figures. However, independent of the definition used, depression prevalence varies greatly by dementia status, physical functioning, and marital status. These findings may be useful for clinicians when assessing depression in older adults and for researchers when exploring and comparing depression prevalence across studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of depression among elderly people varies across different setups such as old age homes (OAHs), community, and medical clinics. AIMS The aim of this study was to compare the epidemiological factors pertaining to depression among elderly residents of OAHs and community, using a new Gujarati version of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS-G). SETTINGS AND DESIGN A cross-sectional, epidemiological study conducted in an urban setup of Western India. MATERIALS AND METHODS All the eligible 88 elderly residents of all the six OAHs and 180 elderly residents from the same city were administered a pretested semistructured questionnaire having the GDS-G form. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Descriptive statistics, odds ratio, Spearman's rank correlation test. RESULTS The elderly of OAHs were more depressed compared to those of community (odds ratio = 1.84; 95% confidence interval = 1.09-3.06). Older age, females, weaker family ties, economic maladies, poorer self-perception of health status, presence of chronic ailments, absence of recreational activity, lack of prayers, impaired sleep, history of addiction emerged as the predictors of depression in both the setups. More health complaints and a later self-perception of visit to a doctor were found among the depressed than the nondepressed in both the setups. CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms were quite high among the elderly in both the setups. Special attention should be given toward health checkups of depressed persons in the OAH and improvement of family ties among depressed persons of the community.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A significant proportion of patients suffer depression following traumatic injuries. Once manifested, major depression is challenging to overcome and its presence risks impairing the potential for physical rehabilitation and functional recovery. Risk stratification for early detection and intervention in these instances is important. This study aims to investigate patient and injury characteristics associated with an increased risk for depression. METHODS All patients with traumatic injuries were recruited from the trauma registry of an urban university hospital between 2007 and 2012. Patient and injury characteristics as well as outcomes were collected for analysis. Patients under the age of eighteen, prescribed antidepressants within one year of admission, in-hospital deaths and deaths within 30days of trauma were excluded. Pre- and post-admission antidepressant data was requested from the national drugs registry. Post-traumatic depression was defined as the prescription of antidepressants within one year of trauma. To isolate independent risk factors for depression a multivariable forward stepwise logistic regression model was deployed. RESULTS A total of 5981 patients met the inclusion criteria of whom 9.2% (n=551) developed post-traumatic depression. The mean age of the cohort was 42 [standard deviation (SD) 18] years and 27.1% (n=1620) were females. The mean injury severity score was 9 (SD 9) with 18.4% (n=1100) of the patients assigned a score of at least 16. Six variables were identified as independent predictors for post-traumatic depression. Factors relating to the patient were female gender and age. Injury-specific variables were penetrating trauma and GCS score of≤8 on admission. Furthermore, intensive care admission and increasing hospital length of stay were predictors of depression. CONCLUSION Several risk factors associated with the development of post-traumatic depression were identified. A better targeted in-hospital screening and patient-centered follow up can be offered taking these risk factors into consideration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder in adulthood and is associated with higher mortality and functional disability. OBJECTIVES To determine the association between clinical and sociodemographic variables with depression in a sample of people over 50 years old living in Spain, and compare the prevalence of depression with the other Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement (SHARE) countries. MATERIAL AND METHODS There were 5,830 participants in the Spanish sample of the Wave 5, 2013, of SHARE. Tools used: EURO-D (Depression) and CASP-12 (Quality of Life). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Bivariate, and binary logistic. RESULTS The variables associated with depression in the binary logistic regression (EURO-D ≥4) were poor self-perceived physical health (OR=13.34; 95% CI: 9.74-18.27), having more than 2 difficulties in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) (OR=4.46; 95% CI: 3.13-6.34) and female gender (OR=2.16; 95% CI: 1.83-2.56). Depression was more common among participants with Alzheimer (76.4%), emotional disorders (73.9%), Parkinson (57.4%), hip fracture (55.4%), and rheumatism (50.9%). Compared with other European countries, Spain had a percentage of people with depression (29.3%) that was higher than the European average (27.9%). CONCLUSIONS The most important variables associated with depression were poor perceived physical health, presence of difficulties in ADL, and female gender.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined associations between intensive lifestyle intervention (ILS) and changes in testosterone and associations with mood among middle-aged men. DESIGN Secondary analysis of men (n=886) participating in the Diabetes Prevention Program which randomized glucose-intolerant, overweight men to ILS, metformin, or placebo between 1996 and 1999. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Changes in testosterone between baseline and 1-year follow-up asnd associations of these changes with mood measures (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI-II], Beck Anxiety Inventory [BAI]). RESULTS Median baseline testosterone was 10.98nmol/l and 44% (n=385) had testosterone<10.41nmol/l or 300ng/dl. Testosterone increases were greater among men randomized to ILS vs. metformin vs. placebo (1.15nmol/l vs. -0.12nmol/l vs. -0.27nmol/l, p<0.001). The association between changes in testosterone and mood differed by study arm (p<0.001 for interaction); there were no significant associations between changes in testosterone and mood changes among men in the ILS or placebo arms. Among men in the metformin arm, increases in testosterone were significantly associated with decreases in BDI-II (improved depressive symptoms) (β-coefficient -0.2336, p=0.0002) indicating a 0.23 decrease in BDI-II for every 1nmol/l increase in testosterone and decreases in BAI (improved anxiety symptoms) (β-coefficient -0.2147, p=0.0014). Similar patterns were observed for bioavailable testosterone. CONCLUSIONS Among overweight middle-aged men with glucose-intolerance, ILS increased endogenous testosterone slightly but without significant improvements in mood. Metformin did not increase testosterone, but among metformin users, testosterone increases were associated with improvements in mood. Thus, interventions that increase endogenous testosterone may not also improve mood.

Abstract
The adenosine modulation system mostly operates through inhibitory A1 (A1 R) and facilitatory A2A receptors (A2A R) in the brain. The activity-dependent release of adenosine acts as a brake of excitatory transmission through A1 R, which are enriched in glutamatergic terminals. Adenosine sharpens salience of information encoding in neuronal circuits: high-frequency stimulation triggers ATP release in the 'activated' synapse, which is locally converted by ecto-nucleotidases into adenosine to selectively activate A2A R; A2A R switch off A1 R and CB1 receptors, bolster glutamate release and NMDA receptors to assist increasing synaptic plasticity in the 'activated' synapse; the parallel engagement of the astrocytic syncytium releases adenosine further inhibiting neighboring synapses, thus sharpening the encoded plastic change. Brain insults trigger a large outflow of adenosine and ATP, as a danger signal. A1 R are a hurdle for damage initiation, but they desensitize upon prolonged activation. However, if the insult is near-threshold and/or of short-duration, A1 R trigger preconditioning, which may limit the spread of damage. Brain insults also up-regulate A2A R, probably to bolster adaptive changes, but this heightens brain damage since A2A R blockade affords neuroprotection in models of epilepsy, depression, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's disease. This initially involves a control of synaptotoxicity by neuronal A2A R, whereas astrocytic and microglia A2A R might control the spread of damage. The A2A R signaling mechanisms are largely unknown since A2A R are pleiotropic, coupling to different G proteins and non-canonical pathways to control the viability of glutamatergic synapses, neuroinflammation, mitochondria function, and cytoskeleton dynamics. Thus, simultaneously bolstering A1 R preconditioning and preventing excessive A2A R function might afford maximal neuroprotection. The main physiological role of the adenosine modulation system is to sharp the salience of information encoding through a combined action of adenosine A2A receptors (A2A R) in the synapse undergoing an alteration of synaptic efficiency with an increased inhibitory action of A1 R in all surrounding synapses. Brain insults trigger an up-regulation of A2A R in an attempt to bolster adaptive plasticity together with adenosine release and A1 R desensitization; this favors synaptotocity (increased A2A R) and decreases the hurdle to undergo degeneration (decreased A1 R). Maximal neuroprotection is expected to result from a combined A2A R blockade and increased A1 R activation. Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between dual task walking, cognition, and depression in oldest old people living in the community. METHODS We conducted an observational cross-sectional study at Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil). We assessed 67 community-dwelling older adults aged 80 years and over, who were able to walk alone and did not present with a risk of dementia (assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination, MMSE). The assessment consisted of anamnesis, dual task using the Timed Up and Go test associated with a motor task (TUGT-motor) and a cognitive task (TUGT-cognitive); cognitive measures using MMSE, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Clock Drawing test (CDT) and verbal fluency, and depressive measures by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). RESULTS There was a correlation with higher magnitude between cognitive tests and TUGT-cognitive, compared to TUGT-motor. For TUGT-motor, the highest correlations with cognitive tests were found between time and MMSE, MoCA (total score), and MoCA visuospatial/executive domain. For TUGT-cognitive, the highest correlations with cognitive tests were between number of steps and MMSE and between time and MMSE. GDS showed a significant weak correlation with number of steps taken in TUGT-motor, wrong words, and correct/time of TUGT-cognitive. CONCLUSIONS Dual task performances are associated with cognition in oldest old. Furthermore, dual task tests have less influence of educational level, are functional, fast, and easily applicable in clinical practice. Future studies are needed to confirm if dual task test is useful for cognitive screening in oldest old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between perceived stress and comorbidities, neurological deficit, functional independence and depressive symptoms of stroke survivors after hospital discharge. METHOD Cross-sectional study with 90 elderly stroke survivors. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale instrument, the Functional Independence Measure instrument, the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale were used. Bivariate Pearson correlation, independent t test and multiple regression analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between perceived stress and other variables. RESULTS The final regression model showed that higher perceived stress was related to less functional independence (p= 0.022) and more depressive symptoms (p <0.001). CONCLUSION At hospital discharge, interventions should be planned for the treatment of depressive symptoms and to create adaptation strategies to the reduction of functional independence, in order to reduce the stress of the survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of and the association between depressive symptoms and loneliness in relation to age and sex among older people (65-80 years) and to investigate to what extent those who report depressive symptoms had visited a health care professional and/or used antidepressant medication. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted in a Swedish sample randomized from the total population in the age group 65-80 years (n = 6659). Chi square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS The data showed that 9.8% (n = 653) reported depressive symptoms and 27.5% reported feelings of loneliness. More men than women reported depressive symptoms, and the largest proportion was found among men in the age group 75-80 years. An association between the odds to have a depressive disorder and loneliness was found which, however, decreased with increasing age. Of those with depressive symptoms a low proportion had visited a psychologist (2.9%) or a welfare officer (4.2%), and one in four reported that they use antidepressant medication. Of those who reported depressive symptoms, 29% considered that they had needed medical care during the last three months but had refrained from seeking, and the most common reason for that was negative experience from previous visits. CONCLUSION Contrary to findings in most of the studies, depressive symptoms were not more prevalent among women. The result highlights the importance of detecting depressive symptoms and loneliness in older people and to offer adequate treatment in order to increase their well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of some psychological disorders in elderly people in three different social settings and to evaluate the impact of those problems on the adaptation of denture wearers to removable prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted in three social settings: the geriatric clinic of a university hospital, nursing homes and a Third Age University school (TAU). Each group consisted of 70 randomly selected individuals. Of the total number of 210 subjects, 183 persons wore maxillary removable dentures while 150 had mandibular prostheses. Some symptoms of psychological disorders were diagnosed on the basis of results provided by two tests: GHQ and GDS. For identification of an inter-relationship between the use of removable dentures and the psychic status, the difficulties in adaptation to removable dentures were evaluated. RESULTS Statistical analysis showed that the number of individuals with depressive symptoms was significantly lower in the group of TAU students than among the nursing home residents. No statistically significant difference in the occurrence of depression was found between the group of hospital patients and the students of TAU. A comparison of the GDS test results with the incidence of denture use difficulties indicated a significant inter-relationship. CONCLUSIONS The GHQ and GDS tests may prove useful in the prosthetic treatment of those removable denture wearers who complain of oral discomfort without manifesting any visible causes. The proportion of elderly with signs of psychic disorders is significantly lower among TAU students than nursing home residents and hospital patients.
