Sulfur filling activates vacancy-induced C-C bond cleavage in polyol electrooxidation

Using the electrochemical polyol oxidation reaction (POR) to produce formic acid over nickel-based oxides/hydroxides (NiO x H y ) is an attractive strategy for the electrochemical upgrading of biomass-derived polyols. The key step in the POR, i.e. the cleavage of the C-C bond, depends on an oxygen-vacancy-induced mechanism. However, a high-energy oxygen vacancy is usually ineffective for Schottky-type oxygen-vacancy-rich β-Ni(OH)2 (VSO-β-Ni(OH)2). As a result, both β-Ni(OH)2 and VSO-β-Ni(OH)2 cannot continuously catalyze oxygen-vacancy-induced C-C bond cleavage during PORs. Here, we report a strategy of oxygen-vacancy-filling with sulfur to synthesize a β-Ni(OH)2 (S-VO-β-Ni(OH)2) catalyst, whose oxygen vacancies are protected by filling with sulfur atoms. During PORs over S-VO-β-Ni(OH)2, the pre-electrooxidation-induced loss of sulfur and structural self-reconstruction cause the in-situ generation of stable Frenkel-type oxygen vacancies for activating vacancy-induced C-C bond cleavage, thus leading to excellent POR performances. This work provides an intelligent approach for guaranteeing the sustaining action of the oxygen-vacancy-induced catalytic mechanism in electrooxidation reactions.

Photodriven Ammonia Synthesis from Manganese Nitrides: Photophysics and Mechanistic Investigations

Ammonia synthesis from N,N,O,O-supported manganese(V) nitrides and 9,10-dihydroacridine using proton-coupled electron transfer and visible light irradiation in the absence of precious metal photocatalysts is described. While the reactivity of the nitride correlated with increased absorption of blue light, excited-state lifetimes determined by transient absorption were on the order of picoseconds. This eliminated excited-state manganese nitrides as responsible for bimolecular N-H bond formation. Spectroscopic measurements on the hydrogen source, dihydroacridine, demonstrated that photooxidation of 9,10-dihydroacridine was necessary for productive ammonia synthesis. Transient absorption and pulse radiolysis data for dihydroacridine provided evidence for the presence of intermediates with weak E-H bonds, including the dihydroacridinium radical cation and both isomers of the monohydroacridine radical, but notably these intermediates were unreactive toward hydrogen atom transfer and net N-H bond formation. Additional optimization of the reaction conditions using higher photon flux resulted in higher rates of the ammonia production from the manganese(V) nitrides due to increased activation of the dihydroacridine.

Dual transition metal electrocatalysis enables selective C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage and arylation of cyclic alcohols

We report a dual transition metal electrocatalytic approach for C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage and arylation of cyclic alcohols, providing an efficient and sustainable method for site-specific arylation of ketones. The reaction involves electrophotochemical cerium-catalysed generation of alkoxyl radicals from readily accessible alcohols. Subsequently, homolytic cleavage of the β-C-C bond leads to the generation of carbon-centered radicals that could be effectively utilized by nickel catalysis powered by cathode reduction to deliver the remote arylated ketone products.

Theoretical Insights into the Catalytic Oxidation of Phenols and Arylamines by Laccases via the Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Mechanism

Laccases play a vital role in the degradation of toxic phenolic and aromatic amine compounds, generating considerable attention in ecological pollution remediation. However, the distinct mechanism of the laccase-catalyzed oxidation of phenols and arylamines remains unclear. Here, we examined the catalytic oxidation mechanisms of phenols and arylamines by Trametes versicolor (TvL) and Melanocarpus albomyces (MaL) laccases using molecular docking, quantum mechanics (QM), and QM/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations. We docked four phenolic substrates, including 1,2-benzenediol, 2-propenylphenol, 2-methoxyhydroquinone, and 2-aminophenol, to TvL and identified their favorable reaction conformations, in which Asp206 of TvL plays an important role in binding substrates to promote the catalytic reactions. Based on the docking conformations, the QM and QM/MM calculations revealed that the oxidation reactions take place via a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism, with proton transfer (PT) from the hydroxyl groups of substrates to the side chain of Asp206 and synchronous electron hopping from the aromatic ring of substrates to the type one copper (T1Cu) of TvL. For the MaL and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol interacting system, the oxidation reactions occur through a concerted double-proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism with a water-mediated indirect PT from the hydroxyl group of substrates to the conserved Glu235 and electron hopping from the substrate to T1Cu at the same time. The corresponding energy barriers change from 0.7 to 18.4 kcal/mol, indicating the different degradation rates of the phenols and arylamines by laccases. These findings provide insights into the oxidation mechanism of phenols and arylamines by laccases and may extend the applications of laccases.

Photoinduced Transition-Metal and External Photosensitizer Free Benzylic Fluorination of Unactivated Alkylarenes

A green and efficient protocol for the direct monofluorination of unactivated alkylarenes under visible-light irradiation has been developed, without any extraneous transition-metal catalysts or photosensitizers. This method is compatible with a broad spectrum of functional groups, including carboxylic and alcoholic scaffolds, under mild reaction conditions. Gram-scale synthesis of a fluorine-containing pharmaceutical analogue was successfully executed, underscoring the strategy's reliability and practicality. Furthermore, mechanistic studies suggest that a single-electron transfer mechanism might be responsible for the generation of the benzylic radicals in initiation step.

Photoredox-catalyzed C(sp2)-H trifluoromethylation of 3-methylene-isoindolin-1-ones under metal-free conditions

A facile synthetic method for direct C(sp2)-H bond trifluoromethylation of 3-methylene-isoindolin-1-ones under visible-light-induced metal-free conditions is presented. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, resulting in a range of structurally diverse trifluoromethylated products in good to excellent yields.

Visible Light-Induced Oxy-perfluoroalkylation of Olefins via Ternary Electron Donor-Acceptor Complexes

Perfluoroalkyl iodides generally formed electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes by halogen bonding with a nitrogen atom containing Lewis bases. Since the electronegativity of the oxygen atom is stronger than that of the nitrogen atom, the resulting Rf-I···O-type halogen bonding EDA complex is less inclined to undergo electron transfer. Here, we reported rare ternary EDA complexes among perfluoroalkyl iodide, oxygen atom, and base. Mechanism experiments and density functional theory theoretical (DFT) calculations indicated that a base-promoted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process was involved in this photochemical reaction. The intracomplex electron transfer event generated two radical species, perfluoroalkyl radical and TEMPO radical, enabling the subsequent oxy-perfluoroalkylation of olefins.

Electron Delocalization and Transfer Across Polyoxometalates-Based Subnanomaterials in Catalytic Reactions

Due to their identical building blocks and high surface-to-volume ratio, subnanomaterials exhibit significant properties compared to their bulk nanomaterial counterparts. The interactions between these building blocks can result in either equal or unequal sharing of electrons, leading to electron transfer in heterojunctions or electron delocalization within symmetric structures. Clusters, possessing electronic properties akin to atoms, can serve as reservoirs of electrons to stabilize crucial intermediates in catalytic reactions. This perspective provides a novel understanding of well-defined subnanomaterials with distinct architectures, such as cluster-based constructions and co-assembled heterojunctions, emphasizing the relationship between electronic structures and catalytic properties. The objective is to provide novel perspectives on the realm of subnanomaterials and cluster-based architectures.

Asymmetrically Coordinated Mn-S1N3 Configuration Induces Localized Electric Field-Driven Peroxymonosulfate Activation for Remarkably Efficient Generation of 1O2

Singlet oxygen (1O2) species generated in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes offer opportunities to overcome the low efficiency and secondary pollution limitations of existing AOPs, but efficient production of 1O2 via tuning the coordination environment of metal active sites remains challenging due to insufficient understanding of their catalytic mechanisms. Herein, an asymmetrical configuration characterized by a manganese single atom coordinated is established with one S atom and three N atoms (denoted as Mn-S1N3), which offer a strong local electric field to promote the cleavage of O─H and S─O bonds, serving as the crucial driver of its high 1O2 production. Strikingly, an enhanced the local electric field caused by the dynamic inter-transformation of the Mn coordination structure (Mn-S1N3 ↔ Mn-N3) can further downshift the 1O2 production energy barrier. Mn-S1N3 demonstrates 100% selective product 1O2 by activation of PMS at unprecedented utilization efficiency, and efficiently oxidize electron-rich pollutants. This work provides an atomic-level understanding of the catalytic selectivity and is expected to guide the design of smart 1O2-AOPs catalysts for more selective and efficient decontamination applications.

p-Diarylboryl Halothiophenols as Multifunctional Catalysts via Photoactive Intramolecular Frustrated Lewis Pairs

p-Diarylboryl halothiophenols are developed and unequivocally characterized. Their photophysical properties and catalytic performance are unveiled by experimental and theoretical investigations. This novel class of triarylboranes behaves as a Brønsted acid to generate the corresponding borylthiophenolate that can absorb visible light to undergo intramolecular charge transfer to form a radical pair consisting of a boron radical anion and thiyl radical, which acts as a single-electron reductant while engaging in hydrogen atom transfer to regenerate the parent borylthiophenol. The synthetic relevance of this mode of action is demonstrated by the establishment of unique catalysis that integrates three different yet tunable functions in a single catalytic cycle, thereby allowing borylthiophenols to solely promote the assembly of sterically congested 1,2-diols and 1,2-aminoalcohol derivatives via radical-radical cross-coupling.

Catalytic Asymmetric Redox-Neutral [3+2] Photocycloadditions of Cyclopropyl Ketones with Vinylazaarenes Enabled by Consecutive Photoinduced Electron Transfer

Consecutive photoinduced electron transfer (ConPET) is a powerful and atom-economical protocol to overcome the limitations of the intrinsic redox potential of visible light-absorbing photosensitizers, thereby considerably improving the substrate and reaction types. Likely because such an exothermic single-electron transfer (SET) process usually does not require the aid of chiral catalysts, resulting in an inevitable racemic background reaction, notably, no enantioselective manifolds have been reported. Herein, we report on the viability of cooperative ConPET and chiral hydrogen-bonding catalysis for the [3+2] photocycloaddition of cyclopropyl ketones with vinylazaarenes. In addition to enabling the first use of olefins that preferentially interact with chiral catalysts, this catalysis platform paves the way for the efficient synthesis of pharmaceutically and synthetically important cyclopentyl ketones functionalized by azaarenes with high yields, ees and dr. The robust capacity of the method can be further highlighted by the low loading of the chiral catalyst (1.0 mol %), the good compatibility of both 2-azaarene and 3-pyridine-based olefins, and the successful concurrent construction of three stereocenters on cyclopentane rings involving an elusive but important all-carbon quaternary.

Decoupling Plasmonic Hot Carrier from Thermal Catalysis via Electrode Engineering

Increased attention has been directed toward generating nonequilibrium hot carriers resulting from the decay of collective electronic oscillations on metal known as surface plasmons. Despite numerous experimental endeavors, demonstrating hot carrier-mediated photocatalysis without a heating contribution has proven challenging, particularly for single electron transfer reactions where the thermal contribution is generally detrimental. An innovative engineering solution is proposed to enable single electron transfer reactions with plasmonics. It consists of a photoelectrode designed as an energy filter and photocatalysis performed with light function modulation instead of continuously. The photoelectrode, consisting of FTO/TiO2 amorphous (10 nm)/Au nanoparticles, with TiO2 acting as a step-shape energy filter to enhance hot electron extraction and charge-separated state lifetime. The extracted hot electrons were directed toward the counter electrode, while the hot holes performed a single electron transfer oxidation reaction. Light modulation prevented local heat accumulation, effectively decoupling hot carrier catalysis from the thermal contribution.

Organic Synthesis Away from Equilibrium: Contrathermodynamic Transformations Enabled by Excited-State Electron Transfer

ConspectusChemists have long been inspired by biological photosynthesis, wherein a series of excited-state electron transfer (ET) events facilitate the conversion of low energy starting materials such as H2O and CO2 into higher energy products in the form of carbohydrates and O2. While this model for utilizing light-driven charge transfer to drive catalytic reactions thermodynamically "uphill" has been extensively adapted for small molecule activation, molecular machines, photoswitches, and solar fuel chemistry, its application in organic synthesis has been less systematically developed. However, the potential benefits of these approaches are significant, both in enabling transformations that cannot be readily achieved using conventional thermal chemistry and in accessing distinct selectivity regimes that are uniquely enabled by excited-state mechanisms. In this Account, we present work from our group that highlights the ability of visible light photoredox catalysis to drive useful organic transformations away from their equilibrium positions, addressing a number of long-standing synthetic challenges.We first discuss how excited-state ET enabled the first general methods for the catalytic anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of unactivated alkenes with alkyl amines. In these reactions, an excited-state iridium(III) photocatalyst reversibly oxidizes secondary amine substrates to their corresponding aminium radical cations (ARCs). These electrophilic N-centered radicals can then react with olefins to furnish valuable tertiary amine products with complete anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity. Notably, some of these products are less thermodynamically stable than their corresponding amine and alkene starting materials. We next present a strategy for light-driven C-C bond cleavage within various aliphatic alcohols mediated by homolytic activation of alcohol O-H bonds by excited-state proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). The resulting alkoxy radical intermediates then undergo C-C β-scission to ultimately provide isomeric linear carbonyl products that are often higher in energy than their cyclic alcohol precursors. Applications of this chemistry for the light-driven depolymerization of lignin biomass, commercial phenoxy resin, hydroxylated polyolefin derivatives, and thermoset polymers are presented as well. We then describe a method for the contrathermodynamic positional isomerization of highly substituted olefins by means of cooperative photoredox and chromium(II) catalysis. In this work, generation of an allylchromium(III) species that can undergo highly regioselective in situ protodemetalation enables access to a less substituted and thermodynamically less stable positional isomer. Product selectivity in this reaction is determined by the large differential in oxidation potentials between differently substituted olefin isomers. Lastly, we discuss a light-driven deracemization reaction developed in collaboration with the Miller group, wherein a racemic urea substrate undergoes spontaneous optical enrichment upon visible light irradiation in the presence of an iridium(III) chromophore, a chiral Brønsted base, and a chiral peptide thiol. Excellent levels of enantioselectivity are achieved via sequential and synergistic proton transfer (PT) and H atom transfer (HAT) steps. Taken together, these examples highlight the ability of excited-state ET events to enable access to nonequilibrium product distributions across a wide range of catalytic, redox-neutral transformations in which photons are the only stoichiometric reagents.

Photocatalytic Enantioselective Radical Cascade Multicomponent Minisci Reaction of β-Carbolines Using Diazo Compounds as Radical Precursors

Here, a photocatalytic asymmetric multicomponent cascade Minisci reaction of β-carbolines with enamides and diazo compounds is reported, enabling an effective enantioselective radical C─H functionalization of β-carbolines with high yields and enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and 95% ee). This enantioselective multicomponent Minisci protocol exhibits step economy, high chemo-/enantio-selective control, and good functional group tolerance, allowing access to a variety of valuable chiral β-carbolines. Notably, diazo compounds are suitable radical precursors in enantioselective cascade radical reactions. Moreover, the efficiency and practicality of this approach are demonstrated by the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural products.

Asymmetric photoredox catalytic formal de Mayo reaction enabled by sensitization-initiated electron transfer

Visible-light-driven photoredox catalysis is known to be a powerful tool for organic synthesis. Its occurrence critically depends on the twice exothermic single-electron transfer processes of photosensitizers, which are governed by the redox properties of the species involved. Hence, the inherently narrow range of redox potentials of photosensitizers inevitably constrains their further availability. Sensitization-initiated electron transfer has recently been found to effectively overcome this substantial challenge. However, feasible and practical strategies for designing such complicated catalytic systems are rather scarce. Herein we report an elaborate dual-catalyst platform, with dicyanopyrazine as a visible light photosensitizer and a pyrenyl-incorporated chiral phosphoric acid as a co-sensitizer, and we demonstrate the applicability of this sensitization-initiated electron transfer strategy in an asymmetric formal de Mayo-type reaction. The catalysis platform enables otherwise thermodynamically unfavourable electron transfer processes to close the redox cycle and allows for precise access to valuable enantioenriched 1,5-diketones with a wide substrate range.

Thermodynamic H-Abstraction Abilities of Nitrogen Centered Radical Cations as Potential Hydrogen Atom Transfer Catalysts in Y-H Bond Functionalization

Y-H bond functionalization has always been the focus of research interest in the area of organic synthesis. Direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the Y-H bond is one of the most efficient and practical methods to activate the Y-H bond. Recently, nitrogen centered radical cations were broadly utilized as H-abstraction catalysts to activate Y-H bonds via the HAT process. As a type of HAT catalyst, the H-affinity of nitrogen centered radical cations is a significant thermodynamic parameter to quantitatively evaluate the thermodynamic H-abstraction potentials of nitrogen centered radical cations. In this work, the pK a values of 120 protonated N-containing compounds in acetonitrile (AN) are predicted, and the H-affinities of 120 nitrogen centered radical cations in AN are derived from the reduction potentials of nitrogen centered radical cations and pK a of protonated N-containing compounds using Hess' law. This work focuses on the H-abstraction abilities of 120 nitrogen centered radical cations in AN to enrich the molecule library of novel HAT catalysts or H-abstractors and provides valuable thermodynamic guidelines for the application of nitrogen centered radical cations in Y-H bond functionalization.

Sulfonamide-directed site-selective functionalization of unactivated C(sp3)-H enabled by photocatalytic sequential electron/proton transfer

The generation of alkyl radical from C(sp3)-H substrates via hydrogen atom abstraction represents a desirable yet underexplored strategy in alkylation reaction since involving common concerns remain adequately unaddressed, such as the harsh reaction conditions, limited substrate scope, and the employment of noble metal- or photo-catalysts and stoichiometric oxidants. Here, we utilize the synergistic strategy of photoredox and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis to accomplish a general and practical functionalization of unactived C(sp3)-H centers with broad reaction scope, high functional group compatibility, and operational simplicity. A combination of validation experiments and density functional theory reveals that the N-centered radicals, generated from free N - H bond in a stepwise electron/proton transfer event, are the key intermediates that enable an intramolecular 1,5-HAT or intermolecular HAT process for nucleophilic carbon-centered radicals formation to achieve heteroarylation, alkylation, amination, cyanation, azidation, trifluoromethylthiolation, halogenation and deuteration. The practical value of this protocol is further demonstrated by the gram-scale synthesis and the late-stage functionalization of natural products and drug derivatives.

Excited Charge Transfer Promoted Electron Transfer in all Perylenediimide Derived, Wide-Band Capturing Conjugates: A Mimicry of the Early Events of Natural Photosynthesis

Fundamental discoveries in electron transfer advance scientific and technological advancements. It is suggested that in plant and bacterial photosynthesis, the primary donor, a chlorophyll or bacteriochlorophyll dimer, forms an initial excited symmetry-breaking charge transfer state (1CT*) upon photoexcitation that subsequently promotes sequential electron transfer (ET) events. This is unlike monomeric photosensitizer-bearing donor-acceptor dyads where ET occurs from the excited donor or acceptor (1D* or 1A*). In the present study, we successfully demonstrated the former photochemical event using an excited charge transfer molecule as a donor. Electron-deficient perylenediimide (PDI) is functionalized with three electron-rich piperidine entities at the bay positions, resulting in a far-red emitting CT molecule (DCT). Further, this molecule is covalently linked to another PDI (APDI) carrying no substituents at the bay positions, resulting in wide-band capturing DCT-APDI conjugates. Selective excitation of the CT band of DCT in these conjugates leads to an initial 1DCT* that undergoes subsequent ET involving APDI, resulting in DCT +-APDI - charge separation product (kCS~109 s-1). Conversely, when APDI was directly excited, ultrafast energy transfer (ENT) from 1APDI* to DCT (kENT~1011 s-1) followed by ET from 1DCT* to PDI is witnessed. While increasing solvent polarity improved kCS rates, for a given solvent, the magnitude of the kCS values was almost the same, irrespective of the excitation wavelengths. The present findings demonstrate ET from an initial CT state to an acceptor is key to understanding the intricate ET events in complex natural and bacterial photosynthetic systems possessing multiple redox- and photoactive entities.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer and Hydrogen Tunneling in Olive Oil Phenol Reactions

Olive oil phenols are recognized as molecules with numerous positive health effects, many of which rely on their antioxidative activity, i.e., the ability to transfer hydrogen to radicals. Proton-coupled electron transfer reactions and hydrogen tunneling are ubiquitous in biological systems. Reactions of olive oil phenols, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleuropein, oleacein, oleocanthal, homovanillyl alcohol, vanillin, and a few phenolic acids with a DPPH• (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical in a 1,4-dioxane:water = 95:5 or 99:1 v/v solvent mixture were studied through an experimental kinetic analysis and computational chemistry calculations. The highest rate constants corresponding to the highest antioxidative activity are obtained for the ortho-diphenols hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, and oleacein. The experimentally determined kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) for hydroxytyrosol, homovanillyl alcohol, and caffeic acid reactions are 16.0, 15.4, and 16.7, respectively. Based on these KIEs, thermodynamic activation parameters, and an intrinsic bond orbital (IBO) analysis along the IRC path calculations, we propose a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism. The average local ionization energy and electron donor Fukui function obtained for the phenolic compounds show that the most reactive electron-donating sites are associated with π electrons above and below the aromatic ring, in support of the IBO analysis and proposed PCET reaction mechanism. Large KIEs and isotopic values of Arrhenius pre-exponential factor AH/AD determined for the hydroxytyrosol, homovanillyl alcohol, and caffeic acid reactions of 0.6, 1.3, and 0.3, respectively, reveal the involvement of hydrogen tunneling in the process.

Visible-light-induced three-component reactions of α-diazoesters, quinazolinones and cyclic ethers toward quinazoline-based hybrids

An effective approach for the construction of 4-short-chain ether attached carbonyl group-substituted quinazolines was developed. Visible-light-induced three-component reactions of α-diazoesters, quinazolinones, and cyclic ethers, with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, under extremely mild conditions without the need for any additional additives and catalysts, selectively led to quinazoline-based hybrids in good to excellent yields. The synthesized hybrids, which are a conglomeration of a quinazoline, a short-chain ether, and a carbonyl group in one molecular skeleton, have potential for application in the development of new drugs or drug candidates.

Nickel-Photoredox-Catalyzed Stereoconvergent Coupling of Alkenyl Halides and Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles

Nitrogen-containing heterocycles possessing N-alkenyl substituents are an important structural motif. However, the synthetic methods reported thus far cannot selectively synthesize the Z stereoisomer on the basis of the stereochemistry of the substituted alkenes. Herein, we report the stereoconvergent coupling of heterocycles and alkenyl halides consisting of a mixture of E/Z stereoisomers, which selectively afforded the thermodynamically less stable Z-coupling product. Mechanistic studies suggest that a nickel photoredox catalyst facilitates the formation of N-centered heteroarene radicals.

Oxidative polymerization versus degradation of organic pollutants in heterogeneous catalytic persulfate chemistry

Catalytic polymerization pathways in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have recently drawn much attention for organic pollutant elimination owing to the rapid removal kinetics, high selectivity, and recovery of organic carbon from wastewater. This work presents a review on the polymerization regimes in AOPs and their applications in wastewater decontamination. The review mainly highlights three critical issues in polymerization reactions induced by persulfate activation (Poly-PS-AOPs), including heterogeneous catalysts, persulfate activation pathways, and properties of organic substrates. The dominant influencing factors on the selection of catalysts, activation regimes of reactive oxygen species, and polymerization processes of organic substrates are discussed in detail. Moreover, we systematically demonstrate the merits and challenges of Poly-PS-AOPs upon pollutant degradation and polymer synthesis. We particularly highlight that Poly-PS-AOPs technology could be promising in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing heterocyclic organics and the synthesis of polymers and polymer-functionalized materials for advanced environmental and energy applications.

Intermolecular Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactivity from a Persistent Charge-Transfer State for Reductive Photoelectrocatalysis

Interest in applying proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reagents in reductive electro- and photocatalysis requires strategies that mitigate the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Photoexcitation of a PCET donor to a charge-separated state (CSS) can produce a powerful H-atom donor capable of being electrochemically recycled at a comparatively anodic potential corresponding to its ground state. However, the challenge is designing a mediator with a sufficiently long-lived excited state for bimolecular reactivity. Here, we describe a powerful ferrocene-derived photoelectrochemical PCET mediator exhibiting an unusually long-lived CSS (τ ∼ 0.9 μs). In addition to detailed photophysical studies, proof-of-concept stoichiometric and catalytic proton-coupled reductive transformations are presented, which illustrate the promise of this approach.

Photo- and Cobalt-Catalyzed Synthesis of Heterocycles via Cycloisomerization of Unactivated Olefins

We report a general, intramolecular cycloisomerization of unactivated olefins with pendant nucleophiles. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and tolerates ethers, esters, protected amines, acetals, pyrazoles, carbamates, and arenes. It is amenable to N-, O-, as well as C-nucleophiles, yielding a number of different heterocycles including, but not limited to, pyrrolidines, piperidines, oxazolidinones, and lactones. Use of both a benzothiazinoquinoxaline as organophotocatalyst and a Co-salen catalyst obviates the need for stoichiometric oxidant or reductant. We showcase the utility of the protocol in late-stage drug diversification and synthesis of several small natural products.

Evaluation of Organic Hydride/Acid Pairs as a Type of Thermodynamic-Potential-Regulated Multisite Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reagents

Organic hydride/acid pairs have been reported as multisite proton-coupled electron transfer (MS-PCET) reagents in reductive MS-PCET reactions recently. Since the key step for an organic hydride/acid pair acting as an MS-PCET reagent is a chemical process of the organic hydride/acid pair releasing a formal hydrogen atom, the bond dissociation free energy of the organic hydride/acid pair releasing a formal hydrogen atom is a valuable thermodynamic parameter for objectively evaluating the thermodynamic potential for an organic hydride/acid pair to act as an MS-PCET reagent. Now, organic hydride/acid pairs of 216 organic hydrides have been demonstrated to be a potential type of thermodynamically potential-regulated MS-PCET reagent. Without a doubt, organic hydride/acid pairs reflect the change of N-substituted organic hydrides from simple hydride reductants to thermodynamically-regulated MS-PCET reagents, which could significantly expand the availability of novel MS-PCET reagents.

Cu(I)-Photosensitizer-Catalyzed Olefin-α-Amino Radical Metathesis/Demethylenative Cyclization of 1,7-Enynes

A demethylenative En-Yne radical cyclization of 1,7-enynes has been successfully developed to chemoselectively afford 3,4-dihyroquinolin-2-ones or quinolin-2-ones under the catalysis of Cu(I) photosensitizers PS3 and PS6 with different redox potentials. The preliminary mechanistic experiments revealed that the reaction underwent an unprecedented olefin-α-amino radical metathesis-type process. A reasonable mechanism was proposed to illustrate the catalyst-controlled chemoselectivity of the reaction based on preliminary mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations.

Electric-field-assisted proton coupling enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

The discovery of Mn-Ca complex in photosystem II stimulates research of manganese-based catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, conventional chemical strategies face challenges in regulating the four electron-proton processes of OER. Herein, we investigate alpha-manganese dioxide (α-MnO2) with typical MnIV-O-MnIII-HxO motifs as a model for adjusting proton coupling. We reveal that pre-equilibrium proton-coupled redox transition provides an adjustable energy profile for OER, paving the way for in-situ enhancing proton coupling through a new "reagent"- external electric field. Based on the α-MnO2 single-nanowire device, gate voltage induces a 4-fold increase in OER current density at 1.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, the proof-of-principle external electric field-assisted flow cell for water splitting demonstrates a 34% increase in current density and a 44.7 mW/cm² increase in net output power. These findings indicate an in-depth understanding of the role of proton-incorporated redox transition and develop practical approach for high-efficiency electrocatalysis.

Divergent Electrochemical Synthesis of Indoles through pKa Regulation of Amides: Synthetic and Mechanistic Insights

A divergent synthetic approach to access highly substituted indole scaffolds is illustrated. By virtue of a tunable electrochemical strategy, distinct control over the C-3 substitution pattern was achieved by employing two analogous 2-styrylaniline precursors. The chemoselectivity is governed by the fine-tuning of the acidity of the amide proton, relying on the appropriate selection of N-protecting groups, and assisted by the reactivity of the electrogenerated intermediates. Detailed mechanistic investigations based on cyclic voltametric experiments and computational studies revealed the crucial role of water additive, which assists the proton-coupled electron transfer event for highly acidic amide precursors, followed by an energetically favorable intramolecular C-N coupling, causing exclusive fabrication of the C-3 unsubstituted indoles. Alternatively, the implementation of an electrogenerated cationic olefin activator delivers the C-3 substituted indoles through the preferential nucleophilic nature of the N-acyl amides. This electrochemical approach of judicious selection of N-protecting groups to regulate pKa/E° provides an expansion in the domain of switchable generation of heterocyclic derivatives in a sustainable fashion, with high regio- and chemoselectivity.

Light-Driven Synthesis and Functionalization of Bicycloalkanes, Cubanes and Related Bioisosteres

Bicycloalkanes, cubanes and their structural analogues have emerged as bioisosteres of (hetero)arenes. To meet increasing demand, the chemical community has developed a plethora of novel synthetic methods. In this review, we assess the progress made in the field of light-driven construction and functionalization of such relevant molecules. We have focused on diverse structural targets, as well as on reaction processes giving access to: (i) [1.1.1]-bicyclopentanes (BCPs); (ii) [2.2.1]-bicyclohexanes (BCHs); (iii) [3.1.1]-bicycloheptanes (BCHeps); and (iv) cubanes; as well as other structurally related scaffolds. Finally, future perspectives dealing with the identification of novel reaction manifolds to access new functionalized bioisosteric units are discussed.

Palladium-catalyzed three-component radical-polar crossover carboamination of 1,3-dienes or allenes with diazo esters and amines

Herein, we report a visible-light-mediated palladium-catalyzed three-component radical-polar crossover carboamination of 1,3-dienes or allenes with diazo esters and amines, affording unsaturated γ- and ε-amino acid derivatives with diverse structures. In this methodology, the diazo compound readily transforms into a hybrid α-ester alkylpalladium radical with the release of dinitrogen. The radical intermediate selectively adds to the double bond of a 1,3-diene or allene, followed by the allylpalladium radical-polar crossover path and selective allylic substitution with the amine substrate, thereby leading to a single unsaturated γ- or ε-amino acid derivative. This approach proceeds under mild and simple reaction conditions and shows high functional group tolerance, especially in the incorporation of various bioactive molecules. The studies on scale-up reactions and diverse derivatizations highlight the practical utility of this multicomponent reaction protocol.

Diamond surface functionalization via visible light-driven C-H activation for nanoscale quantum sensing

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are a promising platform for nanoscale NMR sensing. Despite significant progress toward using NV centers to detect and localize nuclear spins down to the single spin level, NV-based spectroscopy of individual, intact, arbitrary target molecules remains elusive. Such sensing requires that target molecules are immobilized within nanometers of NV centers with long spin coherence. The inert nature of diamond typically requires harsh functionalization techniques such as thermal annealing or plasma processing, limiting the scope of functional groups that can be attached to the surface. Solution-phase chemical methods can be readily generalized to install diverse functional groups, but they have not been widely explored for single-crystal diamond surfaces. Moreover, realizing shallow NV centers with long spin coherence times requires highly ordered single-crystal surfaces, and solution-phase functionalization has not yet been shown with such demanding conditions. In this work, we report a versatile strategy to directly functionalize C-H bonds on single-crystal diamond surfaces under ambient conditions using visible light, forming C-F, C-Cl, C-S, and C-N bonds at the surface. This method is compatible with NV centers within 10 nm of the surface with spin coherence times comparable to the state of the art. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we use shallow ensembles of NV centers to detect nuclear spins from surface-bound functional groups. Our approach to surface functionalization opens the door to deploying NV centers as a tool for chemical sensing and single-molecule spectroscopy.

Current-Controlled Electrochemical Approach Toward Mono- and Trifluorinated Isoindolin-1-one Derivatives

An electrochemical intramolecular 5-exo-dig aza-cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzamides and subsequent nucleophilic fluorination have been developed to afford the highly selective synthesis of mono- and trifluorinated isoindolin-1-one derivatives. This work demonstrates the unique capability of synthetic electrochemistry in controlling reaction selectivity through the applied electrolytic parameters. In addition, the obtained monofluorinated 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one (19) displays interesting photophysical properties that are not observed in its nonfluorinated analog.

Electrochemical cascade migratory versus ortho-cyclization of 2-alkynylbenzenesulfonamides

Efficient control over several possible reaction pathways of free radicals is the chemical basis of their highly selective transformations. Among various competing reaction pathways, sulfonimidyl radicals generated from the electrolysis of 2-alkynylbenzenesulfonamides undergo cascade migratory or ortho-cyclization cyclization selectively. It is found that the incorporation of an extra 2-methyl substituent biases the selective migration of the acyl- over vinyl-linker of the key spirocyclic cation intermediate and thus serves as an enabling handle to achieve the synthetically interesting yet under-investigated cascade migratory cyclization of spirocyclic cations.

Radical-Smiles Rearrangement by a Vitamin B2-Derived Photocatalyst in Water

Herein, we report a catalytic radical-Smiles rearrangement system of arene migration from ether to carboxylic acid with riboflavin tetraacetate (RFT), a readily available ester of natural vitamin B2, as the photocatalyst and water as a green solvent, being free of external oxidant, base, metal, inert gas protection, and lengthy reaction time. Not only the known substituted 2-phenyloxybenzoic acids substrates but also a group of naphthalene- and heterocycle-based analogues was converted to the corresponding aryl salicylates for the first time. Mechanistic studies, especially a couple of kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiments, suggested a sequential electron transfer-proton transfer processes enabled by the bifunctional flavin photocatalyst.

Additive-controlled chemoselective inter-/intramolecular hydroamination via electrochemical PCET process

Electrochemically generated amidyl radical species produced distinct inter- or intramolecular hydroamination reaction products via a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis indicated that the chemoselectivity was derived from the size of the hydrogen bond complex, which consisted of the carbamate substrate and phosphate base, and could be controlled using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as an additive. These results provide fundamental insights for the design of PCET-based redox reaction systems under electrochemical conditions.

Photo-oxidation of methanol in complexes with pyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine: a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics study

Excited-state Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer (PCET) constitutes a key step in the photo-oxidation of small, electron-rich systems possessing acidic hydrogen atoms, such as water or alcohols, which can play a vital role in green hydrogen production. In this contribution, we employ ab initio quantum-chemical methods and on-the-fly nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations to study the mechanism and the photodynamics of PCET in 1 : 1 pyrido[2,3-b]pyrazine complexes with methanol. We find the process to be ultrafast and efficient when the intramolecular hydrogen bond is formed with one of the β-positioned nitrogen atoms. The complex exhibiting a hydrogen bond with an isolated nitrogen site, on the contrary, shows much lower reactivity. We explain this effect with the stabilization of the reactive ππ* charge-transfer electronic state in the former case.

Coordination-induced bond weakening and small molecule activation by low-valent titanium complexes

Bond activation of small molecules through coordination to low valent metal complexes in M⋯X-H type interactions (where X = O, N, B, Si, etc.) leads to the formation of unusually weak X-H bonds and provides a powerful approach for the synthesis of target compounds under very mild conditions. Coordination of small molecules like water, amides, silanes, boranes, and dinitrogen to Ti(III) or Ti(II) complexes results in the synergetic redistribution of electrons between the metal orbitals and the ligand orbitals which weakens and enables the facile cleavage of the X-H or N-N bonds of the ligands. This review presents an overview of coordination-induced bond activation of small molecules by low valent titanium complexes. In particular, the applications of low valent titanium-induced bond weakening in nitrogen fixation are presented. The review concludes with potential future directions for work in this area including low-valent Ti-based PCET systems, photocatalytic nitrogen reduction, and approaches to tailoring complexes for optimal bond activation.

Visible-Light-Promoted α-C(sp3)-H Amination of Ethers with Azoles and Amides

A visible-light-induced highly efficient C(sp3)-H amination of ethers with amides and azoles has been presented under mild conditions via a nitrogen- and carbon-centered radical coupling process. This protocol successfully utilizes 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) and tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) as cocatalysts to deliver the aminated products of ethers under aerobic conditions. Notably, the developed reaction features the corresponding products in good yields (up to 93%) with a wide substrate scope. The mechanistic study indicates that C-N bond formation proceeds via a direct radical cross-coupling process. Preliminary biological activity analysis indicates that the resulting products have good and selective inhibitory activity on osteosarcoma (OS) cell lines and are promising for use as hits for drug discovery.

Single-Electron Oxidation-Initiated Enantioselective Hydrosulfonylation of Olefins Enabled by Photoenzymatic Catalysis

Controlling the enantioselectivity of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions has been a long-standing synthetic challenge. While recent advances on photoenzymatic catalysis have demonstrated the great potential of non-natural photoenzymes, all of the transformations are initiated by single-electron reduction of the substrate, with only one notable exception. Herein, we report an oxidation-initiated photoenzymatic enantioselective hydrosulfonylation of olefins using a novel mutant of gluconobacter ene-reductase (GluER-W100F-W342F). Compared to known photoenzymatic systems, our approach does not rely on the formation of an electron donor-acceptor complex between the substrates and enzyme cofactor and simplifies the reaction system by obviating the addition of a cofactor regeneration mixture. More importantly, the GluER variant exhibits high reactivity and enantioselectivity and a broad substrate scope. Mechanistic studies support the proposed oxidation-initiated mechanism and reveal that a tyrosine-mediated HAT process is involved.

Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry: mechanistic tools for organic electrosynthesis

Electrochemical methods offer unique advantages for chemical synthesis, as the reaction selectivity may be controlled by tuning the applied potential or current. Similarly, measuring the current or potential during the reaction can provide valuable mechanistic insights into these reactions. The aim of this tutorial review is to explain the use of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry to interrogate reaction mechanisms, optimize electrochemical reactions, or design new reactions. Fundamental principles of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry experiments are presented together with the application of these techniques to probe (electro)chemical reactions. Several diagnostic criteria are noted for the use of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry to analyze coupled electrochemical-chemical (EC) reactions, and a series of individual mechanistic studies are presented. Steady state voltammetric and amperometric measurements, using microelectrodes (ME) or rotating disk electrodes (RDE) provide a means to analyze concentrations of redox active species in bulk solution and offer a versatile strategy to conduct kinetic analysis or determine the species present during (electro)synthetic chemical reactions.

Metal-Free Heterogeneous Photocatalysis for Carbocarboxylation of Alkenes: Efficient Synthesis of γ-Amino Carboxylic Derivatives

A metal-free heterogeneous protocol is established herein for the synthesis of value-added γ-amino acid scaffolds via carbocarboxylation of alkenes with CO2 and alkylamines under visible light irradiation. The protocol shows broad substrate scope under mild reaction conditions and good stability of the catalyst for recycle tests. Moreover, the methodology could be feasible to the late-stage derivatization of several natural products, enriching the chemical arsenal for practical application.

Electroreductive Radical Addition-Polar Cyclization Cascade to Access Cycloalkanes

Compared with flat aromatic scaffolds, three-dimensional aliphatic ring systems feature high structural complexity and topological diversity and, thus, have received increasing attention in drug discovery. Herein, we describe a mild and general electrochemical method for the modular synthesis of structurally distinct cyclic compounds, including monocyclic alkanes, benzo-fused ring systems, and spirocycles, from readily available alkenes and alkyl halides via a radical-polar crossover mechanism.

Ambimodal Addition-Coupled Electron Transfer Mechanism in a Pb(IV)-Promoted Oxidative Dearomatization Reaction

The mechanism of the Pb(IV)-promoted phenol oxidative dearomatization reaction has been traditionally attributed to a carbocation mechanism. In 2011, Pettus reported an oxidative dearomatization reaction leading to a mixture of a formal [5 + 2] and a C-O bond formation product. By employing density functional theory and quasi-molecular dynamics calculations, it was demonstrated that the reaction does not occur through a carbocation intermediate but instead proceeds through an addition-coupled electron transfer (ACET) mechanism. Moreover, the ACET exhibits ambimodality, wherein a transition state results in 4-6 distinct outcomes through post-TS bifurcation. The reported selectivity can be effectively rationalized by a newly proposed mechanism.

Reconciling Imbalanced and Nonadiabatic Reactivity in Transition Metal-Oxo-Mediated Concerted Proton Electron Transfer (CPET)

Recently, there have been several experimental demonstrations of how the rates of concerted proton electron transfer (CPET) are affected by stepwise thermodynamic parameters of only proton (ΔG°PT) or electron (ΔG°ET) transfer. Semiclassical structure-activity relationships have been invoked to rationalize these linear free energy relationships, but it is not clear how they would manifest in a nonadiabatic reaction. Using density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate how a decrease in ΔG°PT can lead to transition state imbalance in a nonadiabatic framework. We then use these calculations to anchor a theoretical model that reproduces experimental trends with ΔG°PT and ΔG°ET. Our results reconcile predictions from semiclassical transition state theory with models that treat proton transfer quantum mechanically in CPET reactivity, make new predictions about the importance of basicity for uphill CPET reactions, and suggest similar treatments may be possible for other nonadiabatic reactions.

Access to Chromenopyrrolidines Enabled by Organophotocatalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] Annulation of Chromones with N-Arylglycines

A facile approach toward chromenopyrrolidines was achieved under mild conditions via organophotocatalyzed aerobic decarboxylative [2 + 2 + 1] annulation of chromones with N-arylglycines, in which N-arylglycines perform dual roles (i.e., radical precursor and methylene provider). Mechanistic studies suggested that a Giese-type radical addition and consequent Mannich pathway were likely responsible for the annulation reaction.

CO2 Activation with Manganese Tricarbonyl Complexes through an H-Atom Responsive Benzimidazole Ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two manganese tricarbonyl complexes, MnI (HL)(CO)3 Br (1 a-Br) and MnI (MeL)(CO)3 Br (1 b-Br) (where HL=2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole; MeL=1-methyl-2-(2'-pyridy)benzimidazole) and assayed their electrocatalytic properties for CO2 reduction. A redox-active pyridine benzimidazole ancillary ligand in complex 1 a-Br displayed unique hydrogen atom transfer ability to facilitate electrocatalytic CO2 conversion at a markedly lower reduction potential than that observed for 1 b-Br. Notably, a one-electron reduction of 1 a-Br yields a structurally characterized H-bonded binuclear Mn(I) adduct (2 a') rather than the typically observed Mn(0)-Mn(0) dimer, suggesting a novel method for CO2 activation. Combining advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, we demonstrate the use of an H-atom responsive ligand may reveal an alternative, low-energy pathway for CO2 activation by an earth-abundant metal complex catalyst.

Catalytic Pollutant Upgrading to Dual-Asymmetric MnO2 @polymer Nanotubes as Self-Propelled and Controlled Micromotors for H2 O2 Decomposition

Industrial and disinfection wastewater typically contains high levels of organic pollutants and residue hydrogen peroxide, which have caused environmental concerns. In this work, dual-asymmetric MnO2 @polymer microreactors are synthesized via pollutant polymerization for self-driven and controlled H2 O2 decomposition. A hollow and asymmetric MnO2 nanotube is derived from MnO2 nanorods by selective acid etching and then coated by a polymeric layer from an aqueous phenolic pollutant via catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-induced polymerization. The evolution of particle-like polymers is controlled by solution pH, molar ratios of PMS/phenol, and reaction duration. The polymer-covered MnO2 tubing-structured micromotors presented a controlled motion velocity, due to the reverse torque driven by the O2 bubbles from H2 O2 decomposition in the inner tunnels. In addition, the partially coated polymeric layer can regulate the exposure and population of Mn active sites to control the H2 O2 decomposition rate, thus avoiding violent motions and massive heat caused by vigorous H2 O2 decomposition. The microreactors can maintain the function of mobility in an ultra-low H2 O2 environment (<0.31 wt.%). This work provides a new strategy for the transformation of micropollutants to functional polymer-based microreactors for safe and controlled hydrogen peroxide decomposition for environmental remediation.

Construction of α-Acyloxy Ketones via Photoredox-Catalyzed O-H Insertion of Sulfoxonium Ylides with Carboxylic Acids

Herein, a photoredox-catalyzed insertion of sulfoxonium ylides with carboxylic acids was advanced under mild and simple conditions, offering a practical approach for preparing α-acyloxy ketones with a broad scope of carboxylic acids. A combined experimental and computational study suggests that this reaction proceeds via a stepwise proton-assisted electron transfer mechanism.

Synthesis of 3-Azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane Derivates

3-Azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes are an important class of nitrogen-containing heterocycles that have been found to be key structural features in a wide range of biologically active natural products, drugs, and agrochemicals. As a cutting-edge area, the synthesis of these derivatives has made spectacular progress in recent decades, with various transition-metal-catalyzed and transition-metal-free catalytic systems being developed. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in the efficient methods for the synthesis of 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexane derivatives since 2010, emphasizing the scope of substrates and synthesis' applications, as well as the mechanisms of these reactions.

The Unified Redox Scale for All Solvents: Consistency and Gibbs Transfer Energies of Electrolytes from their Constituent Single Ions

We have devised the unified redox scale Eabs H2O , which is valid for all solvents. The necessary single ion Gibbs transfer energy between two different solvents, which only can be determined with extra-thermodynamic assumptions so far, must clearly satisfy two essential conditions: First, the sum of the independent cation and anion values must give the Gibbs transfer energy of the salt they form. The latter is an observable and measurable without extra-thermodynamic assumptions. Second, the values must be consistent for different solvent combinations. With this work, potentiometric measurements on silver ions and on chloride ions show that both conditions are fulfilled using a salt bridge filled with the ionic liquid [N2225 ][NTf2 ]: if compared to the values resulting from known pKL values, the silver and chloride single ion magnitudes combine within a uncertainty of 1.5 kJ mol-1 to the directly measurable transfer magnitudes of the salt AgCl from water to the solvents acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, dimethylformamide, ethanol, and methanol. The resulting values are used to further develop the consistent unified redox potential scale Eabs H2O that now allows to assess and compare redox potentials in and over six different solvents. We elaborate on its implications.
