Chitin/MoS2 Nanosheet Dielectric Composite Films with Significantly Enhanced Discharge Energy Density and Efficiency

Recent advancements in bio-based dielectric and piezoelectric polymers and their biomedical applications

The advent of polymer-based dielectrics marked a significant breakthrough in dielectric materials. However, despite their many advantages, they pose serious environmental threats. Therefore, in recent years, there has been growing interest in bio-based polymers as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based polymers. Their renewable nature and reduced environmental impact can fulfil the rising demand for eco-friendly substitutes. Beyond their ecological benefits, bio-based polymers also possess distinctive electrical properties that make them extremely attractive in a variety of applications. Considering these, herein, we present recent advancements in bio-based dielectric polymers and nanocomposites. First, the fundamental concepts of dielectric and polymer-based dielectric materials are covered. Then, we will delve into the discussion of recent advancements in the dielectric properties and thermal stability of bio-based polymers, including polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polybutylene succinate, starch, cellulose, chitosan, chitins, and alginates, and their nanocomposites. Other novel bio-based dielectric polymers and their distinct dielectric characteristics have also been pointed out. In an additional section, the piezoelectric properties of these polymers and their recent biomedical applications have been highlighted and discussed thoroughly. In conclusion, this paper thoroughly discusses the recent advances in bio-based dielectric polymers and their potential to revolutionize the biomedical industry while cultivating a more sustainable and greener future.

Review of sustainable, eco-friendly, and conductive polymer nanocomposites for electronic and thermal applications: current status and future prospects

Biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPNCs) are advanced materials that have gained significant attention over the past 20 years due to their advantages over conventional polymers. BPNCs are eco-friendly, cost-effective, contamination-resistant, and tailorable for specific applications. Nevertheless, their usage is limited due to their unsatisfactory physical and mechanical properties. To improve these properties, nanofillers are incorporated into natural polymer matrices, to enhance mechanical durability, biodegradability, electrical conductivity, dielectric, and thermal properties. Despite the significant advances in the development of BPNCs over the last decades, our understanding of their dielectric, thermal, and electrical conductivity is still far from complete. This review paper aims to provide comprehensive insights into the fundamental principles behind these properties, the main synthesis, and characterization methods, and their functionality and performance. Moreover, the role of nanofillers in strength, permeability, thermal stability, biodegradability, heat transport, and electrical conductivity is discussed. Additionally, the paper explores the applications, challenges, and opportunities of BPNCs for electronic devices, thermal management, and food packaging. Finally, this paper highlights the benefits of BPNCs as biodegradable and biodecomposable functional materials to replace traditional plastics. Finally, the contemporary industrial advances based on an overview of the main stakeholders and recently commercialized products are addressed.

Energy Storage Performance of Polymer-Based Dielectric Composites with Two-Dimensional Fillers

Dielectric capacitors have garnered significant attention in recent decades for their wide range of uses in contemporary electronic and electrical power systems. The integration of a high breakdown field polymer matrix with various types of fillers in dielectric polymer nanocomposites has attracted significant attention from both academic and commercial sectors. The energy storage performance is influenced by various essential factors, such as the choice of the polymer matrix, the filler type, the filler morphologies, the interfacial engineering, and the composite structure. However, their application is limited by their large amount of filler content, low energy densities, and low-temperature tolerance. Very recently, the utilization of two-dimensional (2D) materials has become prevalent across several disciplines due to their exceptional thermal, electrical, and mechanical characteristics. Compared with zero-dimensional (0D) and one-dimensional (1D) fillers, two-dimensional fillers are more effective in enhancing the dielectric and energy storage properties of polymer-based composites. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of 2D filler-based composites, encompassing a wide range of materials such as ceramics, metal oxides, carbon compounds, MXenes, clays, boron nitride, and others. In a general sense, the incorporation of 2D fillers into polymer nanocomposite dielectrics can result in a significant enhancement in the energy storage capability, even at low filler concentrations. The current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.

Improved Energy Density Obtained in Trilayered Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Based Composites by Introducing Two-Dimensional BN and TiO2 Nanosheets

Dielectric capacitors with an ultrahigh power density have received extensive attention due to their potential applications in advanced electronic devices. However, their inherent low energy density restricts their application for miniaturization and integration of advanced dielectric capacitors. Herein, a novel composite entirely incorporated with two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with a topological trilayered construction is prepared by a solution casting and hot-pressing method. The 2D boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) with a wide band gap that are oriented in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to form the upper and bottom outer layers would efficiently suppress the leakage current in composites, thus significantly improving the overall breakdown strength. Meanwhile, the 2D anatase-type TiO₂ nanosheets (TONS) uniformly distributed in the middle layer can enhance their interfacial compatibility and polarization with the PVDF matrix, leading to a synergistic improvement in both the breakdown strength and dielectric constant of the composite. In particular, a significantly improved dielectric constant of ∼11.42, a reduced dielectric loss of 0.03 at 100 Hz, and a maximum discharge energy density (U_dis) of 10.17 J cm^-3 at an electric field of 370.1 MV m^-1 can be obtained from the trilayered composite containing 3 wt % 2D TONS in the middle layer and 2 wt % 2D BNNS on the outer layer. The finding of this research offers an effective strategy for the preparation of advanced polymer-based composites with an outstanding discharge energy density performance.

A MoS2QDs/chitin nanofiber composite for improved antibacterial and food packaging

Chitin nanofiber has potential application as antibacterial nanocomposite material because of its inherent biocompatibility, biological activity, amino containing macromolecular structure and nano-size effect. Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS₂QDs) were uniformly bonded on partially deacetylated chitin nanofibers (DEChNs) by hydrothermal reactions. The antibacterial properties of MoS₂QDs/DEChN against Escherichia coli were detected under different conditions. When the antibacterial agent was fixed at 200 μg/mL, the survival rates of bacteria were 2.77% (pH = 4), 5.58% (pH = 5) and 7.83% (pH = 6), which were lower than those in the DEChN groups. Unlike DEChN, which only had excellent antibacterial activity under acidic conditions (pH < 5), the combination of DEChN and MoS₂QDs had antibacterial activity close to neutral conditions, with a bacteriostatic rate > 90%. When TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) were applied for the preparation of MoS₂QDs/TOCN, they did not show obvious antibacterial ability, which proved the positive role of DEChN and its amino groups. The MoS₂QDs/DEChN assembled film could be applied to preserve meat by delaying spoilage. The current study might inspire new ideas for designing food packaging based on the prepared MoS₂QDs/DEChN films.

Simulation of the Radar Cross Section of a Noctuid Moth

Electromagnetic modelling may be used as a tool for understanding the radar cross section (RCS) of volant animals. Here, we examine this emerging method in detail and delve deeper into the specifics of the modelling process for a single noctuid moth, with the hope of illuminating the importance of different aspects of the process by varying the morphometric and compositional properties of the model. This was accomplished by creating a high-fidelity three-dimensional insect model by micro-CT scanning a gold-palladium-coated insect. Electromagnetic simulations of the insect model were conducted by applying different morphological and compositional configurations using the WiPL-D Pro 3D Electromagnetic Solver. The simulation results show that high-resolution modelling of insects has advantages compared to the simple ellipsoidal models used in previous studies. We find that the inclusion of wings and separating the composition of the body, wings, and legs and antennae have an impact on the resulting RCS of the specimen. Such modifications to the RCS are missed when a prolate spheroid model is used and should not be ignored in future studies. Finally, this methodology has been shown to be useful in exploring the changes in the RCS that result from variations in specimen size. As such, utilising this methodology further for more species will improve the ability to quantitatively interpret aeroecological observations of weather surveillance radars and special-purpose entomological radars.

Two-Dimensional Fillers Induced Superior Electrostatic Energy Storage Performance in Trilayered Architecture Nanocomposites

Dielectric capacitors with ultrahigh power densities and fast charging/discharging rates are of vital relevance in advanced electronic markets. Nevertheless, a tradeoff always exists between breakdown strength and polarization, which are two essential elements determining the energy storage density. Herein, a novel trilayered architecture composite film, which combines outer layers of two-dimensional (2D) BNNS/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) with high breakdown strength and an intermediate layer made of blended 2D MoS₂ nanosheets/P(VDF-HFP) with large polarization, is fabricated using the layer-by-layer casting method. The insulating BNNS with a wide band gap is able to largely alleviate the distortion of the local electric field, thereby suppressing the leakage current and effectively reducing the conductivity loss, while the 2D MoS₂ nanosheets act as microcapacitors in the polymer composites, thus significantly increasing the permittivity. A finite element simulation is carried out to further analyze the evolution process of electrical treeing in the experimental breakdown of the polymer nanocomposites. Consequently, the nanocomposites possess an excellent discharged energy density of 25.03 J/cm³ accompanied with a high charging/discharging efficiency of 77.4% at 650 MV/m, which greatly exceeds those of most conventional single-layer films. In addition, the corresponding composites exhibit an outstanding reliability of energy storage performance under continuous cycling. The excellent performances of these polymer-based nanocomposite films could pave a way for widespread applications in advanced capacitors.

Cellulose/BaTiO3 nanofiber dielectric films with enhanced energy density by interface modification with poly(dopamine)

Flexible electrostatic capacitors have many potential applications in modern electric power systems. In this study, flexible cellulose-based dielectric films were prepared by compositing regenerated cellulose (RC) and one-dimensional BaTiO₃ nanofiber (BTNF) via a simple and environmentally friendly process. To improve compatibility and distributional homogeneity of the fillers/matrix, BTNF was surface modified by dopamine to prepare the poly(dopamine) modified BTNF (PDA@BTNF). The obtained RC/PDA@BTNF composite films (RC-PDA@BTNF) possessed higher dielectric constant and breakdown strength than those of the RC and RC/BTNF composite films. In particular, RC/PDA@BTNF composite films with 2 vol% PDA@BTNF (RC-2PDA@BTNF) exhibited a high discharged energy density of 17.1 J/cm³ at 520 MV/m, which exceeded 40 % compared with that of RC-2BTNF at 460 MV/m. Meanwhile, RC-2PDA@BTNF could continuously work for more than 10,000 times with a high efficiency of 91 %. Furthermore, the composite films could maintain good dielectric properties for a long time when stored in vacuum condition (under 0.3 atm). Therefore, these flexible cellulose-based dielectric materials are promising in the field of novel high-performance film dielectric capacitors.
