Abstract
Boron(III) complexation was investigated in a series of β-substituted porphycenes. Unlike meso-arylporphycenes, these macrocycles undergo a facile complexation reaction. Upon fusion of the β,β'-positions of the porphycene ligand, the complexation resulted in fast insertion of boron, forming the cisoid-B2OF2 complex. However, in the case of the other β-substituted porphycenes, only bis-BF2 complexes formed. The effect of these substituents on the core geometry and photophysical properties are elaborated here.

Abstract
Heme proteins perform diverse biochemical functions using a single iron porphyrin cofactor. This versatility makes them attractive platforms for the development of new functional proteins. While directed evolution and metal substitution have expanded the properties, reactivity, and applications of heme proteins, the incorporation of porphyrin analogs remains an underexplored approach. This review discusses the replacement of heme with non-porphyrin cofactors, such as porphycene, corrole, tetradehydrocorrin, phthalocyanine, and salophen, and the attendant properties of these conjugates. While structurally similar, each ligand exhibits distinct optical and redox properties, as well as unique chemical reactivity. These hybrids serve as model systems to elucidate the effects of the protein environment on the electronic structure, redox potentials, optical properties, or other features of the porphyrin analog. Protein encapsulation can confer distinct chemical reactivity or selectivity of artificial metalloenzymes that cannot be achieved with the small molecule catalyst alone. Additionally, these conjugates can interfere with heme acquisition and uptake in pathogenic bacteria, providing an inroad to innovative antibiotic strategies. Together, these examples illustrate the diverse functionality that can be achieved by cofactor substitution. The further expansion of this approach will access unexplored chemical space, enabling the development of superior catalysts and the creation of heme proteins with emergent properties.

Abstract
Enzymes are essential catalysts for various chemical reactions in biological systems and often rely on metal ions or cofactors to stabilize their structure or perform functions. Improving enzyme performance has always been an important direction of protein engineering. In recent years, various artificial small molecules have been successfully used in enzyme engineering. The types of enzymatic reactions and metabolic pathways in cells can be expanded by the incorporation of these artificial small molecules either as cofactors or as building blocks of proteins and nucleic acids, which greatly promotes the development and application of biotechnology. In this review, we summarized research on artificial small molecules including biological metal cluster mimics, coenzyme analogs (mNADs), designer cofactors, non-natural nucleotides (XNAs), and non-natural amino acids (nnAAs), focusing on their design, synthesis, and applications as well as the current challenges in synthetic biology.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common oral cancer, having high recurrence and metastasis features. In addition to surgery, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered as another effective approach for OSCC treatment. The water solubility of currently available PDT photosensitizers (PSs) is poor, lowering their singlet oxygen (1O2) yield and consequent PDT efficiency. Strategies of PS assembly have been reported to increase 1O2 yield, but it is still possible to further enhance PDT efficiency. In this work, we utilized apoptosis to amplify the assembly of porphyrin nanofibers for enhanced PDT of OSCC. A water-soluble porphyrin derivative, Ac-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-Asp-TPP (Ac-DEVDD-TPP), was designed for this purpose. Upon caspase-3 (Casp3, an activated enzyme during apoptosis) cleavage and laser irradiation, Ac-DEVDD-TPP was converted to D-TPP, which spontaneously self-assembled into porphyrin nanofibers, accompanied by 1.4-fold and 2.1-fold 1O2 generations in vitro and in cells, respectively. The as-formed porphyrin nanofiber induced efficient cell apoptosis and pyroptosis. In vivo experiments demonstrated that, compared with the scrambled control compound Ac-DEDVD-TPP, Ac-DEVDD-TPP led to 6.2-fold and 1.3-fold expressions of Casp3 in subcutaneous and orthotopic oral tumor models, respectively, and significantly suppressed the tumors. We envision that our strategy of apoptosis-amplified porphyrin assembly might be applied for OSCC treatment in the clinic in the near future.

Abstract
The world of modified porphyrins changed forever when an N-confused porphyrin (NCP), a porphyrin isomer, was first published in 1994. The replacement of one inner nitrogen with a carbon atom revolutionised the chemistry that one is able to perform within the coordination cavity. One could explore new pathways in the organometallic chemistry of porphyrins by forcing a carbon fragment from the ring or an inner substituent to sit close to an inserted metal ion. Since the NCP discovery, a series of modifications became available to tune the coordination properties of the cavity, introducing a fascinating realm of carbaporphyrins. The review surveys all possible carbatetraphyrins(1.1.1.1) and their spectacular coordination and organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
The 20π porphyrinoids are immediate higher homologues of 18π porphyrins and differ from porphyrins in aromaticity which in turn affects the structure, properties and chemical reactivities. Research over the years indicated that the 20π porphyrinoids can be stabilized as non-aromatic/anti-aromatic or Mobius aromatic macrocycles using different strategies such as core-modification of porphyrins, non-metal/metal complexation of porphyrins, peripheral modification of porphyrins and expanded porphyrinoids. The structural properties such as aromaticity of the macrocycle can be controlled by choosing the right synthetic strategy. This review will provide an overview of the development in the chemistry of 20π porphyrinoids giving emphasize on the synthesis, structure and electronic properties of these macrocycles which have huge potential for various applications.

Abstract
Rosenthal's-reagent-mediated intramolecular cyclometallation of α,α-dialkynyldipyrrin nickel(II) complex and subsequent acid treatment afforded a 1,3-butadiene-embedded porphyrin(2.1.2.1), 6, which served as a reactive diene towards dienophiles such as dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and benzyne to give corresponding Diels-Alder adducts. Diels-Alder reaction of 6 and benzdiyne gave adducts 14, 15 a, and 15 b along with a trace amount of porphyrin(2.1.2.1) barrel 13. Stepwise routes using 14 or 15 a/15 b as a substrate allowed for the synthesis of 13 as a single stereoisomer. The nanobarrel structure for 13 was revealed by X-ray diffraction, where its cavity held two chloroform molecules via C-H⋅⋅⋅π interaction. DFT calculations revealed that the electrostatic attraction was dominant with binding energy of 32.8 kcal mol-1 .

Abstract
A novel 22π-aromatic sapphyrin isomer endowed with an acene moiety was designed and realised for the first time as a core-modified monothia analogue. This macrocycle exhibited absorption and emission in the near-infrared region. It was diprotonated under strongly acidic conditions and bound to anions like sapphyrin. It showed unusual coordination chemistry, acting as a neutral ligand and undergoing large out-of-plane deformation to bind Pd(II) ions.

Abstract
The replacement of one or more pyrrolic building block(s) of a porphyrin by a nonpyrrolic heterocycle leads to the formation of so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins (PMPs), porphyrinoids of broad structural variability. The wide range of coordination environments (type, number, charge, and architecture of the donor atoms) that the pyrrole-modified frameworks provide to the central metal ions, the frequent presence of donor atoms at their periphery, and their often observed nonplanarity or conformational flexibility distinguish the complexes of the PMPs clearly from those of the traditional square-planar, dianionic, N4-coordinating (hydro)porphyrins. Their different coordination properties suggest their utilization in areas beyond which regular metalloporphyrins are suitable. Following a general introduction to the synthetic methodologies available to generate pyrrole-modified porphyrins, their general structure, history, coordination chemistry, and optical properties, this Review highlights the chemical, electronic (optical), and structural differences of specific classes of metalloporphyrinoids containing nonpyrrolic heterocycles. The focus is on macrocycles with similar "tetrapyrrolic" architectures as porphyrins, thusly excluding the majority of expanded porphyrins. We highlight the relevance and application of these metal complexes in biological and technical fields as chemosensors, catalysts, photochemotherapeutics, or imaging agents. This Review provides an introduction to the field of metallo-PMPs as well as a comprehensive snapshot of the current state of the art of their synthesis, structures, and properties. It also aims to provide encouragement for the further study of these intriguing and structurally versatile metalloporphyrinoids.

Abstract
The strain effect on the magnetic response of 2D materials as spintronic devices is always important in actual applications. Due to the intriguing electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) vanadium porphyrin (V-PP) sheets, we studied the strain-induced magnetic coupling changes in 2D V-PP sheets by using the density functional theory method and found intriguing magnetic variation characters. The calculated results indicate that biaxial strain can modulate the magnetic moments of the central transition metal vanadium atoms and more importantly can induce phase transitions among three magnetic modes with four magnetic states (ferromagnetic (FM), ferrimagnetic (FIM), and two antiferromagnetic (AFM: AFM1 featuring a parallel spin lattice versus AFM2 featuring a crossing spin lattice)) with unique conversion pathways due to their different responses to the strain. As the compressive strain increases, the magnetic characteristics of 2D-VPP transitions as FM → FIM → AFM1 with two critical points (-4.7% and -6%), while the tensile strain can induce the original FM coupling to transition to another AFM state (FM → AFM2) at 5.3%. Analyses of the density of states, spin densities, and Bader charges reveal that the rich magnetic response properties of the system originate from the electron transfer between the central V and the porphyrin ligand induced by strain. This work provides intriguing information regarding the strain-induced magnetic phase transition mechanism and also presents a viable development direction to design 2D porphyrin magnetic semiconductors and spintronic devices.

Abstract
Dinaphthoporphycene (DNP) has emerged as a versatile ligand undergoing large out-of-plane distortion to form a cis-bimetallic complex with Pd(II) using Pd(OAc)2 and out-of-plane monometallic complexes with Pd(acac)2 and PtCl2(PhCN)2. Herein, we are finally able to synthesize the in-core complex with Pd(II) using PdCl2(PhCN)2 or PdCl2. The crystal structure shows the palladium ion resides slightly above the N4-core, with the Pd(II) dimensionally dissenting with the typical square planarity displayed by the reported in-core DNP complexes with Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions. The deformed complex displays a blue shift in the absorption spectra compared to DNP and its metallo-derivatives. PdDNP exhibits a moderate singlet oxygen generation ability (18%).

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of a monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron porphycene dimer, a structural analogue of a monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer, which is known to be one of the most potent molecule-based catalysts for methane oxidation. 1H-NMR and single-crystal X-ray structural analyses showed that the porphycene complex includes two Fe(IV) ions, and the structure around the Fe-NFe core is quite similar to that of the monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer. Although methane was oxidized into MeOH, HCHO, and HCOOH in the presence of a silica-supported catalyst of this monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron porphycene dimer in an acidic aqueous solution containing excess H2O2, its reactive intermediate was not a high-valence iron-oxo species, as in the case of a monocationic μ-nitrido-bridged iron phthalocyanine dimer, but ˙OH. It is suggested that the high-valent iron-oxo species of the μ-nitrido-bridged iron porphycene dimer was gradually decomposed under these reaction conditions, and the decomposed compound catalyzed a Fenton-type reaction. This result indicates that the stability of the oxo-species is indispensable for achieving high catalytic methane oxidation activity using a μ-nitrido-bridged iron porphyrinoid dimer with an Fe-NFe core as a catalyst.

Abstract
Directly investigating hydrogen bond (HB) dynamics in molecular materials is a challenging task. Here, we report a set of porphyrin isomers, porphycenes, that visualize slight changes on the order of picometers in the intramolecular HB dynamics. Intramolecular HBs of porphycenes were regulated by the systematic modification at meso positions with methyl (Me), cyclopentyl (Cy5), and cyclohexyl (Cy6) moieties. Notably, the quantum yields varied from 35 to 0.04% in chloroform, depending on a slight distortion in the porphycene framework. SC-XRD, XPS, and NMR clearly revealed that the Me and Cy6 moieties increased the nonradiative deactivation by strengthening the intramolecular NH···N HBs whereas Cy5 retained their photoluminescence properties. This is the first example of how the distortion of planar porphyrinoids at the picometer level along with the strength of the intramolecular NH···N HBs can drastically affect their optical properties. The results revealed new avenues of HB engineering based on porphyrinoids.

Abstract
Metalloenzymes naturally achieve various reactivities by assembling limited types of cofactors with endogenous amino acid residues. Enzymes containing metal porphyrinoid cofactors such as heme, cobalamin and F430 exert precise control over the reactivities of the cofactors with protein matrices. This perspective article focuses on our recent efforts to assemble metal complexes of non-natural porphyrinoids within the protein matrix of myoglobin, an oxygen storage hemoprotein. Engineered myoglobins with suitable metal complexes as artificial cofactors demonstrate unique reactivities toward C-H bond hydroxylation, olefin cyclopropanation, methyl group transfer and methane generation. In these cases, the protein matrix enhances the catalytic activities of the cofactors and allows us to monitor the active intermediates. The present findings indicate that placing artificial cofactors in protein matrices provides a useful strategy for creating artificial metalloenzymes that catalyse otherwise unfavourable reactions and providing enzyme models for elucidating the complicated reaction mechanisms of natural enzymes.

Abstract
The first boron complexes of porphycenes, structural isomers of porphyrin, are reported. They are synthesized in good yields by reacting the free-base porphycene ligands with BF3·Et2O through a microwave-assisted method. Depending on the substituent group of porphycenes, two different coordination structures, mono- and diboron porphycenes, are obtained simultaneously. The single crystal structures and DFT calculations suggest that the boron atom of the monoboron porphycene is favorably coordinated on the dipyrroethene site, and the regioisomer of diboron porphycene is of cisoid stereochemistry, which is more stable than transoid. We also investigate the protonation behavior of boron porphycene complexes. Diboron porphycene does not undergo protonation, whereas monoboron porphycene undergoes protonation at the nonboron coordinating pyrroline site, resulting in a red shift in both absorption and emission spectra. Protonation and deprotonation of monoboron porphycene can be reversibly triggered using acids and bases.

Abstract
We have developed a copper-mediated one-pot synthesis of 2,3,5-trisubstituted pyrroles from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and acrylates using ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source. The reaction achieves C-C and C-N bond formation and provides an efficient approach to access highly functionalized pyrroles without further raw material preparation. This method is operationally simple, compatible with a wide range of functional groups, and provides the target products in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
AbstractPorphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges, such as triphyrin(2.1.1), porphycene, porphyrin(2.1.2.1), and hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1), are a relatively new family of porphyrinoids. Vinylene bridges give porphyrinoids a lower symmetry and a flexibility of the framework and they permit cis/trans-isomerization reactions; these factors confer unique properties to these substances, such as coordination to metal ions and aromaticity switching. In this account, the synthesis, crystal structures, and properties of new porphyrinoids containing vinylene bridges are summarized.1 Introduction2 Triphyrin(2.1.1)3 Porphycene4 Porphyrin(2.1.2.1)5 Hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1)6 Conclusion

Abstract
We have introduced the first 3,6,13,16-tetrasubstituted porphycene as its tetramethoxy analogue. This substitution pattern is one of the most general patterns yet missing in this isomeric porphyrin chemistry. This porphycene exhibits intense fluorescence along with the ability to coordinate with divalent metal ions; in particular, it forms the first stable Zn(II) complex among the tetrasubstituted porphycenes. Notably, the molecular structure of Zn1•Py displays supramolecular chirality.

Abstract
The oxidation of NiII-porphyrin dimer 10 with PbO2 or MnO2 resulted in the simultaneous implementation of an N-heterocycle-fused bridge and a modified pyrrole to give three unprecedented porphyrin dimers 11, 12, and 13. The reduction of 12 smoothly afforded 14. The structures of these dimers were all unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These dimers show significantly red-shifted absorption bands and perturbed electrochemical properties with a decreasing HOMO-LUMO gap in the order of 14 > 13 > 11 > 12.

Abstract
The cobalt complexes of meso-aryl substituted porphycenes were synthesized and characterized. The reduction potentials of the complexes were shifted to the positive side depending on the strength of the electron-withdrawing properties of the meso-substituents, while the optical properties, such as the absorption spectra of these complexes, were similar. This suggests that the energy levels of the molecular orbitals of the complexes were changed by the meso-substituents while the gaps of the orbitals were not significantly changed. The one-electron reduction of the complex did not afford the Co(I) species, but the ligand-reduced radical anion, which was characterized by electrospectrochemistry. The generated ligand-reduced species reacted with alkyl halides to form the Co(III)-alkyl complex. As a result, the reduction potential of the electrolytic reaction could be directly controlled by the substituents of the porphycene. The catalytic reaction with trichloromethylbenzene was also performed and it was found that the ratio of the obtained products was changed by the reduction potentials of the catalyst, [Formula: see text]. the cobalt porphycenes.

Abstract
A novel photoantimicrobial agent, namely 2-aminothiazolo[4,5-c]-2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl)porphycene (ATAZTMPo-gentamicin) conjugate, has been prepared by a click reaction between the red-light absorbing 9-isothiocyanate-2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl)porphycene (9-ITMPo) and the antibiotic gentamicin. The conjugate exhibits submicromolar activity in vitro against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively) upon exposure to red light and is devoid of any cytotoxicity in the dark. The conjugate outperforms the two components delivered separately, which may be used to enhance the therapeutic index of gentamicin, broaden the spectrum of pathogens against which it is effective and reduce its side effects. Additionally, we report a novel straightforward synthesis of 2,7,12,17-tetrakis(methoxyethyl) porphycene (TMPo) that decreases the number of steps from nine to six.

Abstract
An expanded heterocorrole, meso-tetraaryl-tellura[22]porphyrin(6.1.1.0), containing a bipyrrole moiety and a six-carbon long link, has been synthesized. The reaction path proceeds through a controlled acid-promoted extrusion of one tellurium atom from meso-aryl-26,28-ditellurasapphyrin, leading to a structure where one tellurophene ring of the substrate is replaced by a bridging acyclic four-carbon unit. This aromatic porphyrin-annulene hybrid is conformationally flexible in solution, on account of the C4 unit adopting two different configurations: trans–cis–trans or all-trans. Studies of the dynamic behavior of tellura[22]porphyrin(6.1.1.0) in solution were performed by means of 1H and 125Te NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray structure of the all-trans form with trapezoid macrocyclic skeleton is also presented.

Abstract
A borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) chromophore is connected to a benzoxazole, benzothiazole, or nitrobenzothiazole heterocycle through an olefinic bridge with trans configuration. Rotation about the two [C-C] bonds flanking the olefinic bridge occurs with fast kinetics in solution, leading to the equilibration of four conformational isomers for each compound. Ensemble spectroscopic measurements in solutions fail to distinguish the coexisting isomers. They reveal instead averaged absorption and emission bands with dependence of the latter on the excitation wavelength. Using high-throughput single-molecule spectroscopy, two main populations of single molecules with distinct spectral centroids are observed for each compound on glass substrates. Computational analyses suggest the two populations of molecules to be conformational isomers with antiperiplanar and periplanar arrangements of the BODIPY chromophores about its [C-C] bond to the olefinic bridge. Thus, statistical analysis of multiple single-molecule emission spectra can discriminate stereoisomers that would otherwise be impossible to distinguish by ensemble measurements alone.

Abstract
We report syntheses of thiophene and dithiophene-substituted porphycenes (ThPc and DThPc) at 2,7,12,17-positions by McMurry coupling. The crystal structure of ThPc revealed that the porphycene plane shows a highly planar structure, and the dihedral angles between the porphycene core and thiophene are relatively small at 21[Formula: see text] and 18[Formula: see text]. ThPc and DThPc exhibit red-shifted and broadened absorption because of the extension of [Formula: see text] conjugations through porphycene to the substituted thiophenes. We found that introduction of thiophene units onto porphycene results in decreasing the HOMO–LUMO differences effectively.

Abstract
Isoxazoline-linked porphyrins have been synthesized by a regioselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between vinylporphyrin 2 and nitrile oxides. The steric interaction directed the reaction trajectory, in which only the product with a link between the 5-position of the isoxazoline and the β-position of porphyrin was observed. The isoxazoline-porphyrins 3a,b have been characterized by absorption, emission, 1H NMR and mass spectra. Later, the crystal structure of 3a was obtained and confirmed the basic features of the NMR-derived structure. Furthermore, a pair of enantiomers of 3a presented in the crystal, which formed a dimeric complex through intermolecular coordination between the Zn2+ center and the carbonyl group of the second molecule.

Abstract
Stable homocarbaporphyrinoids were successfully synthesized by incorporating the m-o-m and p-o-p terphenyl units into the porphyrin core. The distinct bonding modes of terphenyl in the macrocycle generated two structural isomers with two and four carbon atoms in the macrocyclic environment. The core was utilized to stabilize the RhI ion. The spectral and structural analyses revealed that the restricted (m-o-m) and allowed (p-o-p) conjugation in the macrocyclic core provide overall non-aromatic characteristics both to the free bases and their complexes.

Abstract
Hybrid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with core/shell-like hierarchical structure comprised of zirconium metal and porphyrin (e.g., TPP) and its isomer, N-confused porphyrin (NCP), were synthesized through a seed-mediated reaction. The hierarchical structures of hybrid MOFs were characterized by the microscopic image analyses (e.g., scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometry, and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM)). Taking advantage of the intrinsic light-harvesting properties of the porphyrin dye and the N-confused isomer, changing the core/shell layer structures of hybrid MOFs allows for tuning of the visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) absorption/emission characters, excited-state energy migrations, and photosensitization capabilities. The Förster energy transfer event occurring in the bulk MOF samples by photoexcitation enabled us to control the photoinduced singlet oxygen generation through the comprehensive light-harvesting ability of these hybrid porphyrinic MOFs. Therefore, implementation of a precisely designed porphyrin "substitute" into the MOF-based materials indeed provides a new mimic of the photosynthetic pigment system and should be potentially applicable for solar-light-driven devices.

Abstract
An air-stable N, N'-dihydroporphycene, the two-electron reduced form of porphycene, possessing two quinoxaline moieties fused at meso positions, was prepared and characterized. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) spectroscopic studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses support its formulation as a nonaromatic species. Upon treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) in chloroform, a color change is produced that is consistent with deprotonation. Selective detection of this anion is readily achieved.

Abstract
The dihydrogenated porphycene cobalt(ii) complex was synthesized and electrochemical experiments were carried out. The one-electron reduction of the complex proceeded at the central metal to afford the Co(i) species; in contrast, for the non-hydrogenated porphycene cobalt(ii) complex, the one-electron reduction gave the ligand reduced radical anion species. The reactivity of the one-electron reduced species with alkyl halides showed clear differences between the complexes. Hydrogenation of the β-position of the porphycene makes it possible to generate a central cobalt reduced species possessing a higher reactivity than the ligand reduced radical anion species.

Abstract
Magnetically induced current densities have been calculated for porphycenes at the density functional theory level using gauge-including atomic orbitals to ensure gauge-origin independence and a fast basis-set convergence of the current densities. The current densities have been analyzed by using the gauge-including magnetically induced current (GIMIC) method. The porphycenes are aromatic, sustaining strong diatropic ring currents. The ring-current pathways have been determined by integrating the strength of the current density passing selected bonds. The calculations show that the ring current of the porphycenes splits into an outer and inner branch at the pyrrolic rings implying that the ring current involves all 26 π electrons of the porphycenes, which is similar to the ring current of porphyrins. The pyrrolic rings of the aromatic porphycenes do not sustain any significant local ring currents. Dihydroporphycene with four inner hydrogens is antiaromatic with weakly aromatic pyrrolic rings. The annelated benzoic rings in benzoporphycene sustain local paratropic ring currents, whereas the global ring current of dibenzoporphycene splits into an outer and inner branch at the benzoic rings. Comparison of calculated 1H NMR shieldings with ring-current strengths shows that interactions between the inner hydrogen and the neighbor nitrogen is more significant for differences in the 1H NMR shieldings than variations in global ring-current strengths. Calculated excitation energies show that the antiaromatic dihydroporphycene has a smaller optical gap than the aromatic porphycene, even though its HOMO-LUMO gap is larger.
