Periodic Trends in Intra-ionic Excited State Quenching by Halide

The preassociation of reactants in a photoinitiated redox reaction through the use of noncovalent interactions can have a significant impact on excited state reactivity. As these noncovalent interactions render some stabilization to the associated species, they impact the kinetics and thermodynamics of photoinitiated electron transfer. Reported herein is a novel iridium(III) photocatalyst, equipped with an anion-sensitive, amide-substituted bipyridine ligand, and its reactivity with the halides (X = I-, Br-, Cl-) in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. A noteworthy periodic trend was observed, where the size and electron affinity dramatically altered the observed photoredox behavior. The binding affinity for the halides increased with decreasing ionic radius (Keq ∼103 to >106) in a polar medium but association was stoichiometric for each halide in a nonpolar medium. Evidence for the static quenching of iodide and bromide is presented while dynamic quenching was observed with all halides. These results highlight how the photophysics of halide adducts and the thermodynamics of intra-ionic photo-oxidation are impacted as a consequence of preassociation of a quencher through hydrogen bonding.

Electrochemical Acid-Base Transport Limitation Principle for Low Electroactive Analyte Sensing in Wastewater Monitoring

Electrochemical sensing (ES) is crucial for improving data acquisition in wastewater treatment, but obtaining the signal for a low electroactive analyte is challenging. Here, we propose an electrochemical acid-base transport limitation (eABTL) principle for inertness-based sensing, offering a new insight into generating ES signals from an interfacial transport process rather than electron transfer. This principle enables potential ES application for various weak acids and bases (WABs) without reactions themselves. We established an eABTLP method for detecting orthophosphate in solutions as a proof of concept, demonstrating commendable accuracy and precision, and a wide detection range from 10 μM to over 300 mM. Endogenous interferences were identified using 23 weak acids, indicating no significant endogenous interfering factors in typical wastewaters. Of them, volatile fatty acids are the main interference, but their effect can be eliminated by adjusting pH above 6.0. Exogenous factors like anions, cations, ion strength, temperature, organic load, and dissolved oxygen were examined, and most of their effects can be ignored by maintaining consistent analytical procedures between calibration curve and sample. Furthermore, measurement of wastewater samples confirmed the applicability toward domestic wastewater and demonstrated its wide applicability when combined with digestion pretreatment. Given the merits of inertness-based sensing, the eABTL-based methods have the potential to be a crucial part of ES techniques for environmental and industrial monitoring.

An endo-functionalized molecular cage for selective potentiometric determination of creatinine

Potentiometric ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), which rely on selective and lipophilic ionophores, are commonly employed in clinical diagnostics. However, there are very limited specific ionophores for the detection of creatinine, a critical biomarker for renal function assessment. In the present research, we designed and synthesized an endo-functionalized cage, which is able to selectively bind the creatininium cation (K a = 8.6 × 105 M-1) through the formation of multiple C-H⋯O and N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds and cation⋯π interactions. ISEs prepared with this host show a Nernstian response to creatinine and exhibit excellent selectivity and a low detection limit of 0.95 μM. In addition, the creatinine levels in urine or plasma samples determined by our sensor are consistent with those analyzed using enzymatic assay on a Cobas c702. The method is simple, fast and accurate, and amenable to clinical detection of creatinine levels.

Enzymatic Activation and Continuous Electrochemical Production of Methane from Dilute CO2 Sources with a Self-Healing Capsule

Converting dilute CO2 source into value-added chemicals and fuels is a promising route to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission, but integrating electrocatalysis with CO2 capture still faced marked challenges. Herein, we show that a self-healing metal-organic macrocycle functionalized as an electrochemical catalyst to selectively produce methane from flue gas and air with the lowest applied potential so far (0.06 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) through an enzymatic activation fashion. The capsule emulates the enzyme' pocket to abstract one in situ-formed CO2-adduct molecule with the commercial amino alcohols, forming an easy-to-reduce substrate-involving clathrate to combine the CO2 capture with electroreduction for a thorough CO2 reduction. We find that the self-healing system exhibited enzymatic kinetics for the first time with the Michaelis-Menten mechanism in the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and maintained a methane Faraday efficiency (FE) of 74.24% with a selectivity of over 99% for continuous operation over 200 h. A consecutive working lab at 50 mA·cm-2, in an eleven-for-one (10 h working and 1 h healing) electrolysis manner, gives a methane turnover number (TON) of more than 10,000 within 100 h. The integrated electrolysis with CO2 capture facilitates the thorough reduction of flue gas (ca. 13.0% of CO2) and first time of air (ca. 400 ppm of CO2 to 42.7 mL CH4 from 1.0 m3 air). The new self-healing strategy of molecular electrocatalyst with an enzymatic activation manner and anodic shifting of the applied potentials provided a departure from the existing electrochemical catalytic techniques.

Challenges and Applications of Supramolecular Metalate Chemistry

While the supramolecular chemistry of simple anions is ubiquitous, the targeting and exploitation of their metal-containing relatives, the metalates, is less well understood. This mini review highlights the latest advances in this emergent area by discussing the supramolecular chemistry of metalates thematically, with a focus on the exploitation of metalates in a diversity of applications, including medical imaging and therapy, environmental remediation, molecular magnetism, catalysis, perovskite materials, and metal separations. The unifying features of these systems are identified with a view to allow the supramolecular chemist to target the unique material properties of the metalates, even in areas that are currently relatively immature.

Electrochemical Anion Sensing Using Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals with Confined Pores

Anion sensing technology is motivated by the widespread and critical roles played by anions in biological systems and the environment. Electrochemical approaches comprise a major portion of this field but so far have relied on redox-active molecules appended to electrodes that often lack the ability to produce mixtures of distinct signatures from mixtures of different anions. Here, nanocrystalline films of the conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) Cr(1,2,3-triazolate)2 are used to differentiate anions based on size, which consequently affect the reversible oxidation of the MOF. During framework oxidation, the intercalation of larger charge-balancing anions (e.g., ClO4-, PF6-, and OTf-) gives rise to redox potentials shifted anodically by hundreds of mV due to the additional work of solvent reorganization and anion desolvation. Smaller anions (e.g., BF4-) may enter partially solvated, while larger ansions (e.g., OTf-) intercalate with complete desolvation. As a proof-of-concept, we leverage this "nanoconfinement" approach to report an electrochemical ClO4- sensor in aqueous media that is recyclable, reusable, and sensitive to sub-100-nM concentrations. Taken together, these results exemplify an unusual combination of distinct external versus internal surface chemistry in MOF nanocrystals and the interfacial chemistry they enable as a novel supramolecular approach for redox voltammetric anion sensing.

Electrochemical sensing mechanisms of neonicotinoid pesticides and recent progress in utilizing functional materials for electrochemical detection platforms

The excessive residue of neonicotinoid pesticides in the environment and food poses a severe threat to human health, necessitating the urgent development of a sensitive and efficient method for detecting trace amounts of these pesticides. Electrochemical sensors, characterized by their simplicity of operation, rapid response, low cost, strong selectivity, and high feasibility, have garnered significant attention for their immense potential in swiftly detecting trace target molecules. The detection capability of electrochemical sensors primarily relies on the catalytic activity of electrode materials towards the target analyte, efficient loading of biomolecular functionalities, and the effective conversion of interactions between the target analyte and its receptor into electrical signals. Electrode materials with superior performance play a crucial role in enhancing the detection capability of electrochemical sensors. With the continuous advancement of nanotechnology, particularly the widespread application of novel functional materials, there is paramount significance in broadening the applicability and expanding the detection range of pesticide sensors. This comprehensive review encapsulates the electrochemical detection mechanisms of neonicotinoid pesticides, providing detailed insights into the outstanding roles, advantages, and limitations of functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal-organic framework materials, supramolecular materials, metal-based nanomaterials, as well as molecular imprinted materials, antibodies/antigens, and aptamers as molecular recognition elements in the construction of electrochemical sensors for neonicotinoid pesticides. Furthermore, prospects and challenges facing various electrochemical sensors based on functional materials for neonicotinoid pesticides are discussed, providing valuable insights for the future development and application of biosensors for simplified on-site detection of agricultural residues.

Voltammetric Sensing of Chloride Based on a Redox-Active Complex: A Terpyridine-Co(II)-Dipyrromethene Functionalized Anion Receptor Deposited on a Gold Electrode

A redox-active complex containing Co(II) connected to a terpyridine (TPY) and dipyrromethene functionalized anion receptor (DPM-AR) was created on a gold electrode surface. This host-guest supramolecular system based on a redox-active layer was used for voltammetric detection of chloride anions in aqueous solutions. The sensing mechanism was based on the changes in the redox activity of the complex observed upon binding of the anion to the receptor. The electron transfer coefficient (α) and electron transfer rate constant (k0) for the modified gold electrodes were calculated based on Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiments results. On the other hand, the sensing abilities were examined using Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV). More importantly, the anion receptor was selective to chloride, resulting in the highest change in Co(II) current intensity and allowing to distinguish chloride, sulfate and bromide. The proposed system displayed the highest sensitivity to Cl- with a limit of detection of 0.50 fM. The order of selectivity was: Cl- > SO42- > Br-, which was confirmed by the binding constants (K) and reaction coupling efficiencies (RCE).

Solvent effects in anion recognition

Anion recognition is pertinent to a range of environmental, medicinal and industrial applications. Recent progress in the field has relied on advances in synthetic host design to afford a broad range of potent recognition motifs and novel supramolecular structures capable of effective binding both in solution and at derived molecular films. However, performance in aqueous media remains a critical challenge. Understanding the effects of bulk and local solvent on anion recognition by host scaffolds is imperative if effective and selective detection in real-world media is to be viable. This Review seeks to provide a framework within which these effects can be considered both experimentally and theoretically. We highlight proposed models for solvation effects on anion binding and discuss approaches to retain strong anion binding in highly competitive (polar) solvents. The synthetic design principles for exploiting the aforementioned solvent effects are explored.

Exploiting the Mechanical Bond Effect for Enhanced Molecular Recognition and Sensing

The ubiquity of charged species in biological and industrial processes has resulted in ever-increasing interest in their selective recognition, detection, and environmental remediation. Building on the established coordination chemistry principles of the chelate and macrocyclic effects, and host preorganization, supramolecular chemists seek to construct specific 3D binding cavities reminiscent of biotic systems to enhance host-guest binding affinity and selectivity. Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) present a wholly unique platform for synthetic host design, wherein topologies afforded by the mechanical bond enable the decoration of 3D cavities for non-covalent interactions with a range of target guest geometries. Notably, MIM host systems exhibit mechanical bond effect augmented affinities and selectivities for a variety of charged guest species, compared to non-interlocked acyclic and macrocycle host analogs. Furthermore, the modular nature of MIM synthesis facilitates incorporation of optical and electrochemical reporter groups, enabling fabrication of highly sensitive and specific molecular sensors. This review discusses the development of recognition and sensing MIMs, from the first reports in the late 20th century through to the present day, delineating how their topologically preorganized and dynamic host cavities enhance charged guest recognition and sensing, demonstrating the mechanical bond effect as a potent tool in future chemosensing materials.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based Sensor Platforms for Rapid Detection of Contaminants in Wastewater

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of multifunctional material with organic-inorganic doped metal complexes that have a lot of unsaturated metal sites and a consistent network structure. MOFs work has great performance for enhancing the mass transfer, signal, and sensitivity as well as analyte enrichment. This study highlights the recent advancements of MOFs-based sensors for pollutant detection in a water environment and summarizes the effect of various synthetic materials on the performance of MOFs-based sensors. The related challenges and optimization techniques have been discussed. Then the research results of various MOFs sensors in the detection of wastewater pollutants are analyzed. Finally, the challenges facing MOFs-based water sensor development and the outlook for future research are discussed.

Polymeric membrane potentiometric antibiotic sensors using computer-aided screening of supramolecular macrocyclic carriers

Carrier-based polymeric membrane potentiometric sensors are an ideal tool for detecting ionic species. However, in the fabrication of these sensors, the screening of carriers still relies on empirical trial- and error-based optimization, which requires tedious and time-consuming experimental verification. In this work, computer-aided screening of carriers is applied in the preparation of polymeric membrane potentiometric sensors. Molecular docking is used to study the host-guest interactions between receptors and targets. Binding energies are employed as the standard to screen the appropriate carrier. As a proof-of-concept experiment, the antibiotic ciprofloxacin is selected as the target model. A series of supramolecular macrocyclic receptors including cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils and calixarenes are chosen as potential receptors. The proposed sensor based on the receptor calix[4]arene screened by molecular docking shows a lower detection limit of 0.5 μmol L-1 for ciprofloxacin. It can be expected that the proposed computer-aided screening technique of carriers can provide a simple but highly efficient method for the fabrication of carrier-based electrochemical and optical sensors.

Modifying the Oxidative Potentials of Imines in a Dye Loaded Capsule for Photocatalytic Cyclization with Hydrogen Evolution

Modifying redox potential of substrates and intermediates to balance pairs of redox steps are important stages for multistep photosynthesis but faced marked challenges. Through co-clathration of iridium photosensitizer and imine substrate within one packet of a metal-organic capsule to shift the redox potentials of substrate, herein, we reported a multiphoton enzymatic strategy for the generation of heterocycles by intramolecular C-X hydrogen evolution cross-couplings. The cage facilitated a pre-equilibrium substrate-involving clathrate that cathodic shifts the oxidation potential of the substrate-dye-host ternary complex and configuration inversion of substrate via spatial constraints in the confined space. The new two photon excitation strategy enabled the precise control of the multistep electron transfer between each pair (photosensitizer, substrate and the capsule), endowing the catalytic system proceeding smoothly with an enzymatic fashion. Three kinds of 2-subsituted (-OH, -NH2 , and -SH) imines and N-aryl enamines all give the corresponding cyclization products efficiently under visible light irradiation, demonstrating the promising of the microenvironment driven thermodynamic activation in the host-dye-substrate ternary for synergistic combination of multistep photocatalytic transformations.

Evaluation of naked-eye sensing and anion binding studies in meso-fluorescein substituted one-walled calix[4]pyrrole (C4P)

In this paper, we have design, synthesized and fully characterized a new meso-fluorescein substituted one-walled calix[4]pyrrole (C4P7), obtained from simple and easily available starting materials such as fluorescein, 4-hydroxyacetophenone and pyrrole. The anion sensing studies reveal that the C4P7 system displays selective and sensitive naked-eye sensing towards fluoride, phosphate, and acetate anions with the limit of detection of 4.27 mg L-1, 6.4 mg L-1, and 5.94 mg L-1, respectively. Moreover, the C4P7 receptor displays good results of binding (host-guest, 1 : 1) towards a variety of anions. The 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry was further confirmed by means of Job's plots. TD-DFT calculations showed that the HOMO-LUMO gap decreases in all the complexes (C4P7@anions) in comparison to the free C4P7 system. The authors are of the opinion that this work may provide a good platform to explore calix[4]pyrrole chemistry in the arena of recognition/sensing of biologically significant analytes in future studies.

Delving into the Variability of Supramolecular Affinity: Self-Ion Pairing as a Central Player in Aqueous Host-Guest Chemistry

The determination of binding constants is a key matter in evaluating the strength of host-guest interactions. However, the profound impact of self-ion pairing on this parameter is often underrated in aqueous solution, leading in some cases to a misinterpretation of the true potential of supramolecular assemblies. In the present study, we aim to shed further light on this critical factor by exploring the concentration-dependent behavior of a multicharged pillararene in water. Our observations reveal an extraordinary 1-million-fold variability in the affinity of this macrocycle toward a given anion, showcasing the highly dynamic character of electrostatic interactions. We argue that these findings bring to the forefront the inherent determinism that underlies the estimation of affinity constants, a factor profoundly shaped by both the sensitivity of the instrumental technique in use and the intricacies of the experimental design itself. In terms of applications, these results may provide the opportunity to optimize the operational concentrations of multicharged hosts in different scenarios, aiming to achieve their maximum efficiency based on the intended application. Unlocking the potential of this hidden variability may pave the way for the creation of novel molecular materials with advanced functionalities.

Anion Sensing through Redox-Modulated Fluorescent Halogen Bonding and Hydrogen Bonding Hosts

Anion sensing via either optical or electrochemical readouts has separately received enormous attention, however, a judicious combination of the advantages of both modalities remains unexplored. Toward this goal, we herein disclose a series of novel, redox-active, fluorescent, halogen bonding (XB) and hydrogen bonding (HB) BODIPY-based anion sensors, wherein the introduction of a ferrocene motif induces remarkable changes in the fluorescence response. Extensive fluorescence anion titration, lifetime and electrochemical studies reveal anion binding-induced emission modulation through intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET), the magnitude of which is dependent on the nature of both the XB/HB donor and anion. Impressively, the XB sensor outperformed its HB congener in terms of anion binding strength and fluorescence switching magnitude, displaying significant fluorescence turn-OFF upon anion binding. In contrast, redox-inactive control receptors display a turn-ON response, highlighting the pronounced impact of the introduction of the redox-active ferrocene on the optical sensing performance. Additionally, the redox-active ferrocene motif also serves as an electrochemical reporter group, enabling voltammetric anion sensing in competitive solvents. The combined advantages of both sensing modalities were further exploited in a novel, proof-of-principle, fluorescence spectroelectrochemical anion sensing approach, enabling simultaneous and sensitive read out of optical and electrochemical responses in multiple oxidation states and at very low receptor concentration.

Anion-templated synthesis of a switchable fluorescent [2]catenane with sulfate sensing capability

Anion templation strategies have facilitated the synthesis of various catenane and rotaxane hosts capable of strong and selective binding of anions in competitive solvents. However, this approach has primarily relied on positively charged precursors, limiting the structural diversity and the range of potential applications of the anion-templated mechanically interlocked molecules. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of a rare electroneutral [2]catenane using a powerful, doubly charged sulfate template and a complementary diamidocarbazole-based hydrogen bonding precursor. Owing to the unique three-dimensional hydrogen bonding cavity and the embedded carbazole fluorophores, the resulting catenane receptor functions as a sensitive fluorescent turn-ON sensor for the highly hydrophilic sulfate, even in the presence of a large excess of water. Importantly, the [2]catenane exhibits enhanced binding affinity and selectivity for sulfate over its parent macrocycle and other acyclic diamidocarbazole-based receptors. We demonstrate also, for the first time, that the co-conformation of the catenane may be controlled by reversible acid/base induced protonation and deprotonation of the anionic template, SO42-. This approach pioneers a new strategy to induce molecular motion of interlocked components using switchable anionic templates.

Silver Nanocluster-Tagged Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay with a Sole and Narrow Triggering Potential Window

The commercialized electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay is carried out by holding luminophore Ru(bpy)32+ at a given potential. Designing an electrochemiluminophore with a narrow triggering potential window is strongly anticipated to decrease the electrochemical cross-talk and improve the flux of the commercialized ECL immunoassay in a potential-resolved way. Herein, L-penicillamine-capped silver nanoclusters (LPA-AgNCs) are facilely synthesized and utilized as tags to perform the ECL immunoassay with a sole and narrow triggering potential window of 0.24 V by employing hydrazine (N2H4) as a coreactant. The maximum ECL emission of the LPA-AgNCs/N2H4 system is located ca. +1.27 V. Upon immobilizing LPA-AgNCs onto the electrode surface via forming a sandwich immunocomplex, the ECL of LPA-AgNCs/N2H4 can be utilized to sensitively and selectively determine human carcinoembryonic antigen from 0.5 to 1000 pg/mL with a low limit of detection of 0.1 pg/mL (S/N = 3). This work might open a way to screen electrochemiluminophores for the multiple ECL immunoassay in a potential-resolved way.

Effect of a single methyl substituent on the electronic structure of cobaltocene studied by computationally assisted MATI spectroscopy

Metallocenes represent archetypical organometallic compounds playing key roles in various fields of fundamental and applied chemistry. Many of their unique properties arise from low ionization energies (IE) which can be tuned by introducing substituents into the rings. Here we report the first mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrum of a methylmetallocene, (Cp')(Cp)Co (Cp' = η5-C5H4Me, Cp = η5-C5H5). The presence of a single Me group allows us to study the "pure" effect of methylation without the mutual influence of substituents. The MATI technique provides an extremely high accuracy in determining the adiabatic IE of (Cp')(Cp)Co which equals 5.2097(6) eV. The effect of a Me group on the IE of cobaltocene appears to be 36% stronger than that in bis(η6-benzene)chromium. The MATI spectrum of (Cp')(Cp)Co shows a rich vibronic structure from which vibrational frequencies of the free ion are determined. This information provides a solid basis for testing the quality of quantum chemical calculations. Various levels of the DFT and coupled cluster computations are used to describe the structural and electronic transformations accompanying the detachment of an elctron from (Cp')(Cp)Co. New aspects of the methyl substituent influence on the potential energy surfaces, as well as on the inhomogeneous changes in charge density and electrostatic potential caused by ionization, are discussed.

Electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy based determination of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein

In this study, we are reporting a novel electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy (ECS) platform designed for the sensitive and label-free detection of antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus spike protein (anti-rS) in diluted blood serum. The determination of anti-rS is crucial for identification individuals who have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 virus and may have acquired immunity. The rS protein was immobilized on a screen-printed carbon electrode, which was incubated in diluted blood serum containing anti-rS antibodies. Label-free ECS was applied for the determination of interaction between immobilized rS and free-standing anti-rS. Here reported bioanalytical platform demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in detecting anti-rS, achieving a limit of detection of 4.38 nM. This versatile platform could be further enhanced by applying various electrode materials and adapting this platform to detect antibodies against some other proteins. Our findings have significant implications for the development of affordable, scalable biosensing platforms capable to provide rapid and accurate public health screening and monitoring, particularly in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Ferrocene: an exotic building block for supramolecular assemblies

Ferrocene (Fc), a classical organometallic complex, has found potential applications in ligand design, catalysis, and analytical, biological, medicinal and materials chemistry. In recent years, the use of Fc as a building block in supramolecular chemistry has emerged. The molecular shape, size, and hydrophobicity of Fc make it an ideal guest for a variety of macrocyclic host molecules to form stable host-guest complexes. The vertical distance (3.3 Å) between two cyclopentadienyl rings and molecular "ball bearing" property in Fc support the formation of intramolecular π-π stacking, H-bonding and metallophilic interactions between two appropriate substituents in 1,n'-disubstituted ferrocenes. Along with these molecular features, the rigidity along with rotational flexibility, redox reversibility and oxidation-triggered tunable hydrophobicity of Fc have led to its use as an exotic building block for the development of a wide range of supramolecular assemblies such as smart molecular receptors, intricate metal-organic assemblies, supramolecular polymers, and gels including out-of-equilibrium assemblies and metal nanoparticle assemblies. This review highlights the concepts behind the design and development of these assemblies, where the Fc unit has a direct and defined role in their formation and function. The use of Fc in supramolecular assembly is still a relatively young field and set to be the subject of increasing research interest towards the development of fascinating supramolecular structures with tailored properties and programmable functions towards applications in materials and biological sciences.

Supramolecular Nanozyme System Based on Polydopamine and Polyoxometalate for Photothermal-Enhanced Multienzyme Cascade Catalytic Tumor Therapy

The advent of enzyme-facilitated cascade events in which endogenous substrates within the human body are used to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) has spawned novel cancer treatment possibilities. In this study, a supramolecular cascade catalytic nanozyme system was successfully developed, exhibiting photothermal-enhanced multienzyme cascade catalytic and glutathione (GSH) depletion activities and ultimately triggering the apoptosis-ferroptosis synergistic tumor therapy. The nanozyme system was fabricated using β-cyclodextrin-functionalized polydopamine (PDA) as the substrate, which was then entangled with polyoxometalate (POM) via electrostatic forces and assembled with adamantane-grafted hyaluronic acid and glucose oxidase (GOx) via host-guest supramolecular interaction for tumor targeting and GOx loading. The catalytic function of GOx facilitates the conversion of glucose to H2O2 and gluconic acid. In turn, this process affirms the propitious generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH) through the POM-mediated cascade catalysis. Additionally, the POM species actively deplete the intracellular GSH pool, initiating a cascade catalytic tumor therapy. In addition, the PDA-POM-mediated photothermal hyperthermia boosted the cascade catalytic effect and increased ROS production. This confers considerable promise for photothermal therapy (PTT)/nanocatalytic cancer therapy on supramolecular nanozyme systems. The in vitro and in vivo antitumor efficacy studies demonstrated that the supramolecular cascade catalytic nanozyme system was effective at reducing tumor development while maintaining an acceptable level of biocompatibility. Henceforth, this study is to widen the scope of cascade catalytic nanoenzyme production using supramolecular techniques, as well as endeavor to delineate a prospective pathway for the application of PTT-enhanced nanocatalytic tumor therapy.

A highly sensitive nanochannel device for the detection of SUMO1 peptides

SUMOylation is an important and highly dynamic post-translational modification (PTM) process of protein, and its disequilibrium may cause various diseases, such as cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. SUMO proteins must be accurately detected to understand disease states and develop effective drugs. Reliable antibodies against SUMO2/3 are commercially available; however, efficient detectors are yet to be developed for SUMO1, which has only 50% homology with SUMO2 and SUMO3. Here, using phage display technology, we identified two cyclic peptide (CP) sequences that could specifically bind to the terminal dodecapeptide sequence of SUMO1. Then we combined the CPs and polyethylene terephthalate conical nanochannel films to fabricate a nanochannel device highly sensitive towards the SUMO1 terminal peptide and protein; sensitivity was achieved by ensuring marked variations in both transmembrane ionic current and Faraday current. The satisfactory SUMO1-sensing ability of this device makes it a promising tool for the time-point monitoring of the SENP1 enzyme-catalyzed de-SUMOylation reaction and cellular imaging. This study not only solves the challenge of SUMO1 precise recognition that could promote SUMO1 proteomics analysis, but also demonstrates the good potential of the nanochannel device in monitoring of enzymes and discovery of effective drugs.

AIE active luminous dye with a triphenylamine attached benzothiazole core as a portable polymer film for sensitively detecting CN- ions in food samples

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active 3-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4'-(diphenylamino)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)acrylonitrile (BTPA) has been designed and synthesized herein, with the goal of detecting CN^- ions at a low-level in semi-aqueous medium. The deliberate addition of the electron-deficient alkene BTPA increased its sensitivity and selectivity to CN^- ions, with a better detection limit of 6.4 nM, unveiling the next-generation approach to creating sophisticated CN^- ions selective chemosensors. The ESI-MS and NMR spectra analyses provided strong support for the structures of the chemosensors, while the UV-Vis, photoluminescence, and ¹H-NMR titration experiments provided support for the sensing efficiencies. Subsequently, PVDF/BTPA electrospun nanofibers have been effectively produced as functional films. These nanofiber films exhibit outstanding mechanical strength, photo/thermal stability, and optical responsiveness to CN^- ions, making them a potential choice for on-field emerging contaminant detection.

Hofmeister Effects Shine in Nanoscience

Hofmeister effects play a crucial role in nanoscience by affecting the physicochemical and biochemical processes. Thus far, numerous wonderful applications from various aspects of nanoscience have been developed based on the mechanism of Hofmeister effects, such as hydrogel/aerogel engineering, battery design, nanosynthesis, nanomotors, ion sensors, supramolecular chemistry, colloid and interface science, nanomedicine, and transport behaviors, etc. In this review, for the first time, the progress of applying Hofmeister effects is systematically introduced and summarized in nanoscience. It is aimed to provide a comprehensive guideline for future researchers to design more useful Hofmeister effects-based nanosystems.

Detection of Interfering Ions Using Ion Flux Phenomena in Flow-Through Cl-ISEs with Ion Exchange Membranes

Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are among the most successful electrochemical sensors used in various applications because of their ability to measure electrolyte concentrations in liquids easily. It is common practice to suppress ion fluxes through the ion-sensitive membranes in ISEs because such fluxes worsen the lower limit of detection. In this study, we propose a method to detect interfering ions using this ion flux phenomenon. As a proof of principle, a flow-type Cl-ISE based on an ion exchange membrane loaded with the target ion chloride was used to acquire transient potential profiles during standstill after the introduction of liquids containing various ion species. When the target ion of the ion-sensitive membrane was measured, there was almost no change in potential over time. In contrast, when hydrophilic interfering ions were measured, the potential gradually decreased, and when hydrophobic interfering ions were measured, the potential gradually increased. The direction and intensity of these changes over time depended on the ion species and concentrations. The main reason for these potential changes is presumed to be the change in the local ionic composition of the sample near the sensing membrane due to ion exchange between the sample and membrane. This phenomenon could not be observed in a hydrophobic ion exchanger membrane doped with a quaternary ammonium salt and was characteristically observable using hydrophilic ion exchange membranes with a high charge density and a high ion diffusion rate. Finally, using a high-throughput flow-type system, we demonstrated the detection of interfering ions in solutions containing multiple ion species by using the ion flux phenomenon.

The Interplay of Weakly Coordinating Anions and the Mechanical Bond: A Systematic Study of the Explicit Influence of Counterions on the Properties of (Pseudo)rotaxanes

Weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to their ability to stabilise highly reactive cations. It may well be argued, however, that a profound understanding of what truly defines a WCA is still lacking, and systematic studies to unravel counterion effects are scarce. In this work, we investigate a supramolecular pseudorotaxane formation reaction, subject to a selection of anions, ranging from strongly to weakly coordinating, which not only aids in fostering our knowledge about anion coordination properties, but also provides valuable theoretical insight into the nature of the mechanical bond. We employ state-of-the-art DFT-based methods and tools, combined with isothermal calorimetry and 1H NMR experiments, to compute anion-dependent Gibbs free association energies ΔGa, as well as to evaluate intermolecular interactions. We find correlations between ΔGa and the anions’ solvation energies, which are exploited to calculate physico-chemical reaction parameters in the context of coordinating anions. Furthermore, we show that the binding situation within the (pseudo)rotaxanes can be mostly understood by straight-forward electrostatic considerations. However, quantum-chemical effects such as dispersion and charge-transfer interactions become more and more relevant when WCAs are employed.

Engineered Binding Microenvironments in Halogen Bonding Polymers for Enhanced Anion Sensing

Mimicking Nature's polymeric protein architectures by designing hosts with binding cavities screened from bulk solvent is a promising approach to achieving anion recognition in competitive media. Accomplishing this, however, can be synthetically demanding. Herein we present a synthetically tractable approach, by directly incorporating potent supramolecular anion-receptive motifs into a polymeric scaffold, tuneable through a judicious selection of the co-monomer. A comprehensive analysis of anion recognition and sensing is demonstrated with redox-active, halogen bonding polymeric hosts. Notably, the polymeric hosts consistently outperform their monomeric analogues, with especially large halide binding enhancements of ca. 50-fold observed in aqueous-organic solvent mixtures. These binding enhancements are rationalised by the generation and presentation of low dielectric constant binding microenvironments from which there is appreciable solvent exclusion.

Luminescence Sensing of Biomacromolecules Heparin and Protamine in 100% Human Serum and Plasma by Supramolecular Polymeric Assemblies

Heparin, an anionic biomacromolecule, is routinely used as an anticoagulant during medical surgery to prevent blood clot formation and in the treatment of several heart, lung, and circulatory disorders having a higher risk of blood clotting. We herein report supramolecular polymeric nanoassemblies of cationic pyrene-tagged bis-imidazolium amphiphiles for heparin detection with high sensitivity and selectivity in aqueous buffer, plasma, and serum media. The nano-assemblies exhibited cyan-green excimeric emission in aqueous media, and their multivalent array of positive surface charges allowed them to form co-assemblies with heparin, resulting in significantly enhanced emission. This provided a convenient method for heparin detection in buffer at nanomolar concentrations, and most notably, a ratiometric fluorescence response was obtained even in highly competitive 100% human serum and 100% human plasma in a clinically relevant concentration range. Moreover, using the heparin-based luminescent co-assemblies, protamine sulfate, a clinically administered antidote to heparin, was also detected in 100% human serum and 100% human plasma at sub-micromolar concentrations.

Development and Application of Ruthenium(II) and Iridium(III) Based Complexes for Anion Sensing

Improvements in the design of receptors for the detection and quantification of anions are desirable and ongoing in the field of anion chemistry, and remarkable progress has been made in this direction. In this regard, the development of luminescent chemosensors for sensing anions is an imperative and demanding sub-area in supramolecular chemistry. This decade, in particular, witnessed advancements in chemosensors based on ruthenium and iridium complexes for anion sensing by virtue of their modular synthesis and rich chemical and photophysical properties, such as visible excitation wavelength, high quantum efficiency, high luminescence intensity, long lifetimes of phosphorescence, and large Stokes shifts, etc. Thus, this review aims to summarize the recent advances in the development of ruthenium(II) and iridium(III)-based complexes for their application as luminescent chemosensors for anion sensing. In addition, the focus was devoted to designing aspects of polypyridyl complexes of these two transition metals with different recognition motifs, which upon interacting with different inorganic anions, produces desirable quantifiable outputs.

Tunable Construction of Sandwich-Type Double-[1 + 1] and Half-Folded [2 + 2] Schiff-Base Complexes Controlled by the Combination of Primary and Secondary Template Effects

The first-row transition-metal ions Mn²⁺-Cu²⁺ could serve as effective templates to construct three types of double-[1 + 1], [2 + 2], and [1 + 1] Schiff-base dinuclear macrocyclic complexes in the presence of dialdehydes with different pendant arms and a common 1,8-diamine. The extremely flexible nature of macrocyclic ligands allows for the multiple template-directed syntheses, but the final products could be finely tuned by the subtle variations of Mn²⁺-Cu²⁺ ions in a 3d-electronic configuration, radius, and coordination number/geometry as well as the auxiliary (pendant-armed and anionic) template effect at the same time. Two borderlines are observed at the Co²⁺ ion for forming double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] metallacycles involving the H₂pdd precursor and the [1 + 1] Cu²⁺ complex for double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] macrocycles containing the H₂hpdd unit, respectively. The structural diversity is originated from the non-perfect match between [1 + 1]/[2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles and dinuclear metal centers; hence, a compromise between the metal coordination modes and alterations of the ligand conformation takes place.

Highly Selective Recovery of Phosphorus from Wastewater via Capacitive Deionization Enabled by Ferrocene-polyaniline-Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes

While capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising technology for the recovery of nutrients from wastewater, a selective recovery of phosphate from the wastewater containing high concentrations of competing ions is still a huge challenge. Herein, we reported a ferrocene-polyaniline-functionalized carbon nanotube (Fc-PANI/CNT) electrode prepared through amidation reaction and chemical oxidation polymerization, aiming for a highly selective recovery of phosphorus from wastewater. The Fc-PANI/CNT electrode with a unique structure and high conductivity could efficiently adsorb phosphate ions from complex synthetic wastewater with a nearly 100% selectivity, mainly because the integration of ferrocene and an amide bond in Fc-PANI resulted in an enhanced charge transfer (Faradaic reactions) and a strong hydrogen bonding interaction with phosphate ions in its oxidized state. Density functional theory calculations showed that the binding energies of the oxidized Fc-PANI with HPO₄^2- and H₂PO₄^- were much greater than those of the oxidized Fc-PANI with other competing anions. The affinity of Fc-PANI/CNTs with phosphate can be controlled electrochemically based on the synergetic effects of Faradaic reactions and hydrogen bonding, enabling a selective recovery of phosphate through charging/discharging cycles. The phosphate adsorption capacity reached up to 35 mg PO₄^3- g^-1 in a NaCl/Na₂SO₄/NaNO₃/NaH₂PO₄ complex mixture at 1.2 V, outperforming most of the other reported CDI systems. The Fc-PANI/CNT electrode also exhibited a decent regeneration ability and durability during repeated CDI tests, demonstrating a great potential for the application of selective recovery and enrichment of phosphate from wastewater.

Recent advances in macrocyclic arenes-based fluorescent indicator displacement assays

Macrocyclic arenes-based fluorescent indicator displacement assays (F-IDAs) offer a unique and innovative approach to chemosensing, taking molecular recognition in host-guest chemistry to a higher level. Because of their special architecture and versatile host–guest binding properties, macrocyclic arenes, principally calix[n]arenes and, in recent years, pillar[n]arenes, in combination with various fluorophores, are widely used in F-IDAs for the specific and selective sensing of cationic, anionic, and neutral analytes. In this paper, we review recent progress in the development of F-IDAs based on macrocyclic arenes and outline the prospects and remaining challenges relating to macrocyclic arenes-based F-IDAs.

Designer peptides as versatile building blocks for functional materials

Peptides and pseudopeptides show distinct self-assembled nanostructures such as fibers, nanotubes, vesicles, micelles, toroids, helices and rods. The formation of such molecular communities through the collective behavior of molecules is not fully understood at a molecular level. All these self-assembled nanostructured materials have a wide range of applications such as drug delivery, gene delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, catalysis, tissue engineering, nano-electronics and sensing. Self-assembly is one of the most efficient and a simple strategy to generate complex functional materials. Owing to its significance, the last few decades witnessed a remarkable advancement in the field of self-assembling peptides with a plethora of new designer synthetic systems being discovered. These systems range from amphiphilic, cyclic, linear and polymeric peptides. This article presents only selected examples of such self-assembling peptides and pseudopeptides.

Dynamic Covalent Self-Assembly of Chloride- and Ion-Pair-Templated Cryptates

While supramolecular hosts capable of binding and transporting anions and ion pairs are now widely available, self‐assembled architectures are still rare, even though they offer an inherent mechanism for the release of the guest ion(s). In this work, we report the dynamic covalent self‐assembly of tripodal, urea‐based anion cryptates that are held together by two orthoester bridgeheads. These hosts exhibit affinity for anions such as Cl⁻, Br⁻ or I⁻ in the moderate range that is typically advantageous for applications in membrane transport. In unprecedented experiments, we were able to dissociate the Cs⋅Cl ion pair by simultaneously assembling suitably sized orthoester hosts around the Cs⁺ and the Cl⁻ ion.

Halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding mediated sensing

Sigma-hole interactions, in particular halogen bonding (XB) and chalcogen bonding (ChB), have become indispensable tools in supramolecular chemistry, with wide-ranging applications in crystal engineering, catalysis and materials chemistry as well as anion recognition, transport and sensing. The latter has very rapidly developed in recent years and is becoming a mature research area in its own right. This can be attributed to the numerous advantages sigma-hole interactions imbue in sensor design, in particular high degrees of selectivity, sensitivity and the capability for sensing in aqueous media. Herein, we provide the first detailed overview of all developments in the field of XB and ChB mediated sensing, in particular the detection of anions but also neutral (gaseous) Lewis bases. This includes a wide range of optical colorimetric and luminescent sensors as well as an array of electrochemical sensors, most notably redox-active host systems. In addition, we discuss a range of other sensor designs, including capacitive sensors and chemiresistors, and provide a detailed overview and outlook for future fundamental developments in the field. Importantly the sensing concepts and methodologies described herein for the XB and ChB mediated sensing of anions, are generically applicable for the development of supramolecular receptors and sensors in general, including those for cations and neutral molecules employing a wide array of non-covalent interactions. As such we believe this review to be a useful guide to both the supramolecular and general chemistry community with interests in the fields of host-guest recognition and small molecule sensing. Moreover, we also highlight the need for a broader integration of supramolecular chemistry, analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry and materials science in the development of the next generation of potent sensors.

Redox-Switchable Chalcogen Bonding for Anion Recognition and Sensing

Inspired by the success of its related sigma-hole congener halogen bonding (XB), chalcogen bonding (ChB) is emerging as a powerful noncovalent interaction with a plethora of applications in supramolecular chemistry and beyond. Despite its increasing importance, the judicious modulation of ChB donor strength remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present, for the first time, the reversible and large-scale modulation of ChB potency by electrochemical redox control. This is exemplified by both the switching-ON of anion recognition via ChB oxidative activation of a novel bis(ferrocenyltellurotriazole) anion host and switching-OFF reductive ChB deactivation of anion binding potency with a telluroviologen receptor. The direct linking of the redox-active center and ChB receptor donor sites enables strong coupling, which is reflected by up to a remarkable 3 orders of magnitude modulation of anion binding strength. This is demonstrated through large voltammetric perturbations of the respective receptor ferrocene and viologen redox couples, enabling, for the first time, ChB-mediated electrochemical anion sensing. The sensors not only display significant anion-binding-induced electrochemical responses in competitive aqueous-organic solvent systems but can compete with, or even outperform similar, highly potent XB and HB sensors. These observations serve to highlight a unique (redox) tunability of ChB and pave the way for further exploration of the reversible (redox) modulation of ChB in a wide range of applications, including anion sensors as well as molecular switches and machines.

A guide to secondary coordination sphere editing

This tutorial review showcases recent (2015-2021) work describing ligand construction as it relates to the design of secondary coordination spheres (SCSs). Metalloenzymes, for example, utilize SCSs to stabilize reactive substrates, shuttle small molecules, and alter redox properties, promoting functional activity. In the realm of biomimetic chemistry, specific incorporation of SCS residues (e.g., Brønsted or Lewis acid/bases, crown ethers, redox groups etc.) has been shown to be equally critical to function. This contribution illustrates how fundamental advances in organic and inorganic chemistry have been used for the construction of such SCSs. These imaginative contributions have driven exciting findings in many transformations relevant to clean fuel generation, including small molecule (e.g., H⁺, N₂, CO₂, NO_x, O₂) reduction. In most cases, these reactions occur cooperatively, where both metal and ligand are requisite for substrate activation.

Achieving Adjustable Multifunction Based on Host-Guest Interaction-Manipulated Reversible Molecular Conformational Switching

Small molecules that are capable of toggling between multiple and definite conformational states under external stimuli have great potential for use in molecular switches or sensors. However, currently developed regulation approaches for these switchable molecules mostly involve covalent bond-breaking/reforming processes, thereby inevitably producing byproducts or causing fatigue accumulation. Herein, we report a simple but successful model whose molecular conformation can be precisely manipulated between stretched and folded forms by employing host-guest interactions with rigid macrocycles, thus avoiding possible side reactions and fatigue accumulation and possessing excellent reversibility. Moreover, the conformation states of this molecule can be visualized and identified by luminous readout, endowing it with real-time self-reporting features. Furthermore, this controllable and reversible conformational conversion is accompanied by various valuable functions, including controllable multicolor emission; ratiometric fluorescent thermosensing with high temperature resolution, excellent reversibility, lock/unlock switching, and especially linear detection range tunability; and in addition real-time intracellular temperature sensing and imaging, disclosing the intriguing microscopic "conformation-function" relationship based on a single molecule.
