Emerging and Legacy Flame Retardants in UK Indoor Air and Dust: Evidence for Replacement of PBDEs by Emerging Flame Retardants?

Microplastics in indoor air from Birmingham, UK: Implications for inhalation exposure

Microplastics (MPs) are a group of emerging contaminants that attracted increasing scientific and societal attention over the past decade. So far, most studies on MPs focus on characterizing their occurrence, fate, and impact in the aquatic environment. In contrast, very little is known about the magnitude, patterns, and associated risks of human exposure to MPs, particularly indoors, despite people spending most of their time indoors. This paper provides the first study hitherto of MPs in indoor air via both active and passive sampling from 30 homes and 30 workplaces in Birmingham, UK. The average concentration of MPs in the active air samples was 15.6 ± 5.4 MP/m3 in homes and 13.1 ± 6.5 MP/m3 in workplaces. For atmospheric deposition samples (passive sampling), the average MPs concentrations were 3735 ± 1343 MP/m2/day in homes and 3177 ± 1860 MP/m2/day in workplaces. Mean concentrations of MPs in UK homes were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those in workplaces for both active and passive air samples. This was mainly driven by carpeted floors in all the studied homes, while 13 of the sampled workplaces were uncarpeted. MPs concentrations in atmospheric deposition (passive) samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than airborne (active) MPs samples in the studied microenvironments. Nonetheless, a strong correlation (P < 0.01) was observed between the concentrations of MPs measured by active and passive sampling, indicating common sources of MPs to both active and passive samples collected from the same microenvironments. In terms of morphology, fibres were the dominant shape of MPs, followed by fragments, constituting together ≥90% of the identified MPs in all samples, with the remaining minor percent made up by foams. Airborne MPs were dominated by particles in the size range (10-25 μm), and the particles abundance decreased with increasing particle size. MPs in atmospheric fallout particles, were dominated by larger particles (50-100 μm) with lower contribution from smaller particles (10-25 μm) compared to airborne particles. Nonetheless, combined with the predominance of fibres, this raises concern over the risk from inhalation exposure because MPs fibres in the detected size ranges were observed to penetrate into human lung tissue. PET and PVC were the most abundant polymer types in the studied samples followed by PP and PE. The average daily inhalation exposure of UK adults and toddlers was estimated at 3.0 and 6.3 MP/kg body weight/day, respectively. The higher inhalation exposure of UK toddlers raises concern due to their incompletely developed immune and nervous systems.

Neurotoxicity of tetrabromobisphenol-A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) through the GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmission in Caenorhabditis elegans

Tetrabromobisphenol-A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-BDBPE), a novel additive brominated flame retardant, is being developed for use in polyolefin and copolymers. Despite its emerging application, the neurotoxicity and mechanisms of action of TBBPA-BDBPE remain unexplored. Caenorhabditis elegans was utilized as the model organism to study the neurotoxic effects of TBBPA-BDBPE across environmental concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 μg/L. This investigation focused on various toxicological endpoints such as locomotive behavior, neuronal injury, neurotransmitter transmission, and the regulation of nervous system-related gene expression. Acute exposure to TBBPA-BDBPE at concentrations of 10-100 μg/L significantly impaired nematode movement, indicating potential neurotoxicity. In transgenic nematodes, this exposure also caused damage to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) and serotonergic neurons, along with notable changes in the levels of GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmitters. Further molecular studies indicated alterations in neurotransmission-related genes (cat-4, mod-1, unc-25, and unc-47). Molecular docking analysis confirmed the binding affinity of TBBPA-BDBPE to key neurotransmission proteins-CAT-4, MOD-1, UNC-25, and UNC-47. These findings demonstrate that TBBPA-BDBPE exerts neurotoxic effects by impacting GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmission in nematodes. This study provides new insights into the potential environmental risks of TBBPA-BDBPE.

Seasonal variations of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in atmospheric deposition, and their contribution to soil loading

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are ubiquitous in surface soil, and atmospheric deposition is considered to be the major pollution source. However, the research on the environmental transport behaviors of OPEs between atmospheric deposition and soil is very limited. In this study, we investigated the contamination levels and seasonal variations of OPEs in atmospheric deposition samples (n = 33) collected from an area of South China every month between February 2021 and January 2022, and evaluated the contribution of OPEs in atmospheric deposition to soil. The concentrations of ∑21target-OPEs ranged from 3670 to 18,600 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a mean of 8200 ng/g dw (median: 7600 ng/g dw). ∑21target-OPEs concentrations in all atmospheric deposition samples exhibited significant seasonal differences (p < 0.05) with higher concentrations observed in winter and lower concentrations in summer. Tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (TDTBPP) was the most dominant target OPE in atmospheric deposition (4870 ng/g dw), and its seasonal variation trend was consistent with ∑21OPEs (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, in order to further explore the effect of atmospheric deposition on the levels of OPEs in soil of the study region, input fluxes and accumulation increments were estimated. Ten OPEs (including seven target OPEs and three suspect OPEs) exhibited high input flux means and accumulation increments, indicating that these compounds are prone to accumulate in soil via atmospheric deposition. It is noteworthy that the non-target phosphonate analyte bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) dibutyl ethane-1,2-diylbis(phosphonate) (BDTBPDEDBP) was detected at highest median concentration (8960 ng/g dw) in atmospheric deposition. Correspondingly, the average input flux and accumulation increment of BDTBPDEDBP were higher than those of all target and suspect OPEs. Collectively, this study quantifies the environmental transport behavior of OPEs between atmospheric deposition and soil, and provides new evidences for the fact that atmospheric deposition is the important pollution source of OPEs in soil.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in indoor dust from Brazil: assessing demographic differences and human health exposure

Indoor house dust is considered an important human exposure route to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which has raised concern about their environmental persistence and toxicity properties. In this study, eight PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, and -209) were determined in house dust from two cities with different socio-demographic characteristics from Brazil, examining possible relationships with factors that potentially influence contamination (population density, economic activities, presence of electronic equipment, and so on) and also estimating the risk of human exposure through oral ingestion and dermal contact. The Σ8PBDE concentration in Sorocaba city ranged between 380 and 4269 ng/g dw, while in Itapetininga city ranged from 106 to 1000 ng/g dw. In both regions, BDE-209 was the most abundantly found congener, followed by BDE-99. House dust from Sorocaba presented significantly greater concentrations of BDE-183 and BDE-209 than Itapetininga. Regarding risk exposure assessment, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of PBDEs was much lower than their respective reference doses (RfDs) in all pathways estimated (non-dietary ingestion and dermal contact). This study provided valuable data to improve the knowledge about the presence and exposure to PBDEs in Brazilian house dust in comparison to other developing countries and the need to control environmental pollution and protect human health.

Update of the scientific opinion on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its derivatives in food

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and five derivatives in food. Neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity were considered as the critical effects of TBBPA in rodent studies. The available evidence indicates that the carcinogenicity of TBBPA occurs via non-genotoxic mechanisms. Taking into account the new data, the CONTAM Panel considered it appropriate to set a tolerable daily intake (TDI). Based on decreased interest in social interaction in male mice, a lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 0.2 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day was identified and selected as the reference point for the risk characterisation. Applying the default uncertainty factor of 100 for inter- and intraspecies variability, and a factor of 3 to extrapolate from the LOAEL to NOAEL, a TDI for TBBPA of 0.7 μg/kg bw per day was established. Around 2100 analytical results for TBBPA in food were used to estimate dietary exposure for the European population. The most important contributors to the chronic dietary LB exposure to TBBPA were fish and seafood, meat and meat products and milk and dairy products. The exposure estimates to TBBPA were all below the TDI, including those estimated for breastfed and formula-fed infants. Accounting for the uncertainties affecting the assessment, the CONTAM Panel concluded with 90%-95% certainty that the current dietary exposure to TBBPA does not raise a health concern for any of the population groups considered. There were insufficient data on the toxicity of any of the TBBPA derivatives to derive reference points, or to allow a comparison with TBBPA that would support assignment to an assessment group for the purposes of combined risk assessment.

Investigation of the Role of Distances from Liquid Crystal Monomer (LCM) Factories on Distribution of LCMs in Surface Soil Samples

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), which are commonly used in electronic device screens, have attracted attention as a potential class of emerging organic pollutants with persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) properties. This study involved the collection of 54 surface soil samples around one LC industrial park at increasing spatial distances within 1 km, 1-3 km, and 3-5 km from the center of the LC industrial park. Our observations revealed the presence of LCMs in 46 of 54 surface soil samples examined. Of the 39 target LCMs, 36 were identified, comprising 14 non-fluorinated and 22 fluorinated LCMs. Nine LCMs were detected at frequencies exceeding 50%, with 3bcHdFB exhibiting the highest detection frequency of 59% in the soil samples. The total LCM concentrations across the 46 sampling locations varied from 0.0072 to 17.24 ng/g dw, with the highest total concentrations at sampling sites within 1 km of the liquid crystal plant, suggesting that manufacturing processes may be a potential source for LCM release into the environment. Differences were observed in the LCM contamination patterns among the three sampling areas. Additionally, we observed a decrease in the median LCM concentration with increasing distance from the center of the LC industrial park. However, no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) in LCM concentrations were observed across the three distances assessed in this study. This may be owing to the limited variety of target compounds analyzed and the limited number of soil samples. Our results emphasize that further studies on the emissions and pollution characteristics of LCMs during production are warranted.

Impact of Legislation on Brominated Flame Retardant Concentrations in UK Indoor and Outdoor Environments: Evidence for Declining Indoor Emissions of Some Legacy BFRs

Concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were measured in indoor dust, indoor air, and outdoor air in Birmingham, UK. Concentrations of ΣBFRs ranged from 490 to 89,000 ng/g, 46-14,000 pg/m3, and 22-11,000 pg/m3, respectively, in UK indoor dust, indoor air, and outdoor air. BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were the main contributors. The maximum concentration of DBDPE (10,000 pg/m3) in outdoor air is the highest reported anywhere to date. In contrast with previous studies of outdoor air in Birmingham, we observed significant correlations between concentrations of tri- to hepta-BDEs and HBCDD and temperature. This may suggest that primary emissions from ongoing use of these BFRs have diminished and that secondary emissions (e.g., evaporation from soil) are now a potentially major source of these BFRs in outdoor air. Conversely, the lack of significant correlations between temperature and concentrations of BDE-209 and DBDPE may indicate that ongoing primary emissions from indoor sources remain important for these BFRs. Further research to clarify the relative importance of primary and secondary sources of BFRs to outdoor air is required. Comparison with earlier studies in Birmingham reveals significant (p < 0.05) declines in concentrations of legacy BFRs, but significant increases for NBFRs over the past decade. While there appear minimal health burdens from BFR exposure for UK adults, dust ingestion of BDE-209 may pose a significant risk for UK toddlers.

Preparation of double-system imprinted polymer-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes and their application in simultaneous determination of thyroid-disrupting chemicals in dust samples

Dust ingestion is a significant route of human exposure to thyroid-disrupting chemicals (TDCs), and simultaneous determination of multi-contaminants is a great challenge for environmental monitoring. In this study, molecularly imprinted polymer-coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes using thyroxine as the template were synthesized for highly selective TDCs capture. This polymer was prepared by integrating the atom transfer radical polymerization using 2-(3-indol-yl)ethylmethacrylamide as the monomer with the self-polymerization of dopamine. Construction of double-system imprinted cavities could significantly improve their selective recognition performance for TDCs and the coincidence rate reached 88.5 %. The prepared polymers were applied as the solid phase extraction adsorbent to simultaneously determine 7 groups of 35 TDCs. The proposed method showed wide linear range (0.25-1000 ng L-1), low limits of detection (0.02-0.23 ng L-1) and acceptable recoveries (81.8 %-103.5 %). The occurrence and distribution of TDCs were then studied in indoor dust samples (n = 65) collected from four cities in China. We found that tetrabromobisphenol A was the predominant compound and perfluorinated compounds were the most abundant TDCs. In addition, the distribution ratio of TDCs varied between regions. This study provides an efficient technology for direct exposure assessment of multi-contaminants.

Update of the risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in food

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in food, focusing on 10 congeners: BDE-28, -47, -49, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183 and ‑209. The CONTAM Panel concluded that the neurodevelopmental effects on behaviour and reproductive/developmental effects are the critical effects in rodent studies. For four congeners (BDE-47, -99, -153, -209) the Panel derived Reference Points, i.e. benchmark doses and corresponding lower 95% confidence limits (BMDLs), for endpoint-specific benchmark responses. Since repeated exposure to PBDEs results in accumulation of these chemicals in the body, the Panel estimated the body burden at the BMDL in rodents, and the chronic intake that would lead to the same body burden in humans. For the remaining six congeners no studies were available to identify Reference Points. The Panel concluded that there is scientific basis for inclusion of all 10 congeners in a common assessment group and performed a combined risk assessment. The Panel concluded that the combined margin of exposure (MOET) approach was the most appropriate risk metric and applied a tiered approach to the risk characterisation. Over 84,000 analytical results for the 10 congeners in food were used to estimate the exposure across dietary surveys and age groups of the European population. The most important contributors to the chronic dietary Lower Bound exposure to PBDEs were meat and meat products and fish and seafood. Taking into account the uncertainties affecting the assessment, the Panel concluded that it is likely that current dietary exposure to PBDEs in the European population raises a health concern.

Occurrence of liquid crystal monomers in indoor and outdoor air particle matters (PM10): Implications for human exposure indoors

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are potentially persistent, bioaccumulating, and toxic substances. However, limited data are available on the occurrence of LCMs in indoor and outdoor air particle matter (PM10) in residential areas. Herein, residential areas near an e-waste dismantling center (Guiyu Town, Shantou City), as well as areas away from the e-waste site (Jiedong District, Jieyang City) were selected as the sampling areas. PM10 was collected from the indoor environments of Guiyu (IGY) and Jieyang (IJY), as well as those from the outdoor environments (OGY and OJY) using the high-volume air samplers (TH-10000C). The levels of 57 LCMs in PM10 were analyzed, and the highest concentrations of LCMs were found in IGY (0.970-1080 pg/m3), followed by IJY (2.853-455 pg/m3), OGY (0.544-116 pg/m3) and OJY (0.258-35.8 pg/m3). No significant difference was observed for LCM levels in indoor PM10 between the two areas (p > 0.05), which were significantly higher than those in outdoors (p < 0.05), indicating that the release of electronic products in general indoor environments is a source of LCMs that cannot be ignored. The compositions of LCMs in outdoors were not consistent with those of indoors. The correlation analysis of individual LCMs suggested potential different sources to the LCMs in indoor and outdoor environments. The median daily intake values of Σ46LCMs via inhalation were estimated as 0.440, 1.46 × 10-2, 0.170 and 1.19 × 10-2 ng/kg BW/day for adults, and as 2.27, 2.60 × 10-2, 0.880 and 2.10 × 10-2 ng/kg BW/day for toddlers, respectively, indicating much higher exposure doses of LCMs indoors compared with the outdoors, and much higher doses for toddlers compared with adults (p < 0.05). These results reveal the potentially adverse effects of LCMs on vulnerable populations, such as toddlers, in indoor environments.

Are UK E-waste recycling facilities a source of environmental contamination and occupational exposure to brominated flame retardants?

Investigations into the impacts of regulated electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling activities on urban environments in Europe remain rather scarce. In this study, dust samples taken both inside and outside of five UK e-waste recycling facilities were analysed for concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). Average concentrations of ∑BFRs in dust inside and outside UK e-waste recycling facilities were 12,000 ng/g and 180 ng/g, with median concentrations of 7500 ng/g and 85 ng/g, respectively. BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were the most abundant BFRs in both indoor and kerb dust, making a combined contribution to ∑BFRs of ~90 % on average. While four out of the five studied e-waste facilities showed a lack of significant impact on BFR contamination in surrounding environment, one of the studied e-waste recycling facilities was identified as a likely source of BFR contamination to UK urban environments, with industrial activities as another potential source of NBFRs. Occupational exposure of UK e-waste recycling workers to BFRs via dust ingestion was generally lower than that estimated for e-waste recyclers from other countries, but was comparable to BFR exposure via dust ingestion of UK office workers. Our estimates suggested that health burdens posed by dust ingestion of BFRs were minimal for UK e-waste recycling workers.

Extended exposure to tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) leads to subfertility in male mice at the late reproductive age

Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-BDBPE), a commonly used brominated flame retardant as a decabromodiphenyl ether substitute, has been detected in various environmental compartments, but its health hazards remain largely unknown. Our recent study showed that low-dose exposure of male mice to TBBPA-BDBPE from postnatal day (PND) 0 to 56 caused remarkable damage to the microtubule skeleton in Sertoli cells and the blood-testis barrier (BTB) but exerted little effect on conventional reproductive endpoints in adulthood. To investigate whether TBBPA-BDBPE may cause severe reproductive impairments at late reproductive age, here, we extended exposure of historically administrated male mice to 8-month age and allowed them to mate with non-treated females for the evaluation of fertility, followed by a general examination for the reproductive system. As expected, we found that 8-month exposure to 50 μg/kg/d as well as 1000 μg/kg/d TBBPA-BDBPE caused severe damage to the reproductive system, including reduced sperm counts, increased sperm abnormality, histological alterations of testes. Moreover, microtubule damage and BTB-related impairment were still observed following 8-month exposure. Noticeably, high-dose TBBPA-BDBPE-treated mice had fewer offspring with a female-biased sex ratio. All results show that long-term exposure to TBBPA-BDBPE caused severe reproductive impairment, including poor fertility at late reproductive age. It is therefore concluded that slight testicular injuries in early life can contribute to reproductive impairment at late reproductive age, highlighting that alterations in certain non-conventional endpoints should be noticed as well as conventional endpoints in future reproductive toxicity studies.

Organohalogenated flame retardants and organophosphate esters from home and preschool dust in Sweden: Pollution characteristics, indoor sources and intake assessment

This study analysed settled dust samples in Sweden to assess children's combined exposure to 39 organohalogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and 11 organophosphate esters (OPEs) from homes and preschools. >94 % of the targeted compounds were present in dust, indicating widespread use of HFRs and OPEs in Swedish homes and preschools. Dust ingestion was the primary exposure pathway for most analytes, except BDE-209 and DBDPE, where dermal contact was predominant. Children's estimated intakes of ∑emerging HFRs and ∑legacy HFRs from homes were 1-4 times higher than from preschools, highlighting higher exposure risk for HFRs in homes compared to preschools. In a worst-case scenario, intakes of tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) were 6 and 94 times lower than the reference dose for children in Sweden, indicating a potential concern if exposure from other routes like inhalation and diet is as high. The study also found significant positive correlations between dust concentrations of some PBDEs and emerging HFRs and the total number of foam mattresses and beds/m2, the number of foam-containing sofas/m2, and the number of TVs/m2 in the microenvironment, indicating these products as the main source of those compounds. Additionally, younger preschool building ages were found to be linked to higher ΣOPE concentrations in preschool dust, suggesting higher ΣOPE exposure. The comparison with earlier Swedish studies indicates decreasing dust concentrations for some banned and restricted legacy HFRs and OPEs but increasing trends for several emerging HFRs and several unrestricted OPEs. Therefore, the study concludes that emerging HFRs and OPEs are replacing legacy HFRs in products and building materials in homes and preschools, possibly leading to increased exposure of children.

"Old" and "new" contaminants and their management: learning from the past, looking to the future

Within the 50 year lifetime of the Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health (SEGH), we have seen a number of contaminants transfer from being the wonder chemical of their day through to becoming current contaminants of concern. This is also true for a variety of emerging contaminants such as plastic microbeads, pharmaceutical residues, and fire retardant chemicals, amongst others. This thought piece discusses the risk associated with a range of these emerging contaminants, their global nature, how existing models and frameworks can be applied to deal with their impacts, and research and management gaps and challenges.

Temporal trends in concentrations of brominated flame retardants in UK foodstuffs suggest active impacts of global phase-out of PBDEs and HBCDD

Global restrictions on use of legacy brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) have generated demand for novel BFRs (NBFRs) as substitutes. Our research group has previously reported decreased concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDD and increased concentrations of NBFRs in UK indoor environments, suggesting that restrictions on PBDEs and HBCDD are exerting an impact. In this study, we analysed UK foodstuffs collected in 2020-21 and compared the BFR concentrations found with those found in similar samples collected in 2015 to investigate whether similar trends in BFR concentrations would be observed. Concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDD isomers detected in our samples had declined by 78-92 % and 59-97 % since the 2015 study, respectively. Moreover, concentrations of NBFRs (dominated by 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE or TBE), and bis(2-ethyl hexyl) tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP or TBPH)) in UK foodstuffs increased significantly (28-1400 %) between 2015 and 2020-21. Combined, these findings suggest that restrictions on use of PBDEs and HBCDD have had a discernible impact on concentrations of these legacy BFRs and their NBFR replacements in UK foodstuffs. Interestingly, given recent reports of a significant increase in concentrations of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in UK house dust between 2014 and 2019, a significant decline (70-84 %) in concentrations of DBDPE was observed in UK foodstuffs.

In vitro neurotoxic potential of emerging flame retardants on neuroblastoma cells in an acute exposure scenario

Since 2004, some legacy flame retardants (FRs) were restricted or removed from the European markets due to their concern on human health. Both organophosphorus FRs (OPFRs) and novel brominated FRs (NBFRs) have replaced them because they are presumably safer and less persistent emerging FRs (EFRs) and their exposure is currently occurring in indoor environments at high levels. Little is known about the neurotoxic potential risk of these EFRs in humans. The present study was aimed at assessing the acute neurotoxicity potential of Tris(1, 3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCPP), triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), Bis(2-ethylhexyl)tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP) and 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB) on human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y). SH-SY5Y were exposed to these EFRs at low concentrations -ranging 2.5-20 μM. during 2-24 h. We investigated viability, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, as well as neural plasticity and development. The results have demonstrated that selected EFRs (TDCPP, TPhP, EH-TBB and BEH-TBP) did not impair neural function on SH-SY5Y as acute response. To the best of our knowledge, this has been the first study focused on evaluating the neural affection of TPhP on SH-SY5Y cells and of EH-TBB and BEH-TBP on neural cells. We also assessed for the first time almost all endpoints after FR exposure on neural cell lines.

A new consensus on reconciling fire safety with environmental & health impacts of chemical flame retardants

Flame retardants are chemical substances that are intended to mitigate fire safety risks posed by a range of goods including furniture, electronics, and building insulation. There are growing concerns about their effectiveness in ensuring fire safety and the potential harms they pose to human health and the environment. In response to these concerns, on 13 June 2022, a roundtable of experts was convened by the UKRI Six Clean Air Strategic Priorities Fund programme 7. The meeting produced a Consensus Statement that summarises the issues around the use of flame retardants, laying out a series of policy recommendations that should lead to more effective fire safety measures and reduce the human and environmental health risks posed by these potentially toxic chemicals.

Elevated concentrations of halogenated flame retardants in waste childcare articles from Ireland

Concentrations of legacy and alternative halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including chlorinated organophosphate esters (Cl-OPEs), were measured in waste childcare articles (n = 275 for Cl-OPEs, n = 187 for other HFRs) from the Republic of Ireland between 2019 and 2020. Articles studied comprised foams and fabrics from: child car seats, cot mattresses, changing mats, pushchairs, prams, and related items. Fifteen articles (7.7%) exceeded the European Union limit value of 1000 mg/kg for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (all due to BDE-209), an additional 15 exceeded the limit for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), with 7 articles exceeding the limit for both PBDEs and HBCDD. An even greater proportion of articles contained concentrations exceeding 1000 mg/kg for: tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) (n = 73, 27%) and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) (n = 58, 21%), with concentrations greater than 1000 mg/kg also observed for: tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) (n = 14, 5.1% articles), 2-ethylhexyl tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB) (n = 7, 3.7%), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), and bis(2-ethylhexyl)tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP) (both n = 5, 2.7%). Overall, 120 samples contained at least one HFR at a concentration exceeding 1000 mg/kg. In addition to the waste management implications of our findings, our data raise concerns about child exposure to HFRs during the use phase of these everyday items.

Target and suspect analysis of liquid crystal monomers in soil from different urban functional zones

Recent studies have reported the occurrence of liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) in sediment, indoor dust, hand wipes, and human serum samples; however, information regarding their contamination status in soil is currently unavailable. The concentrations of 39 target LCMs were determined in n = 96 surface soil samples collected from five different urban functional zones including agricultural, scenic, industrial, commercial, and residential zones. We observed that 76 of 96 surface soil samples contained at least 19, 13, 16, 19, and 14 of the 39 target LCMs that were detectable in samples from agricultural, scenic, industrial, commercial, and residential zones, respectively. The LCMs in the samples from the agricultural zone exhibited the highest mean concentrations of 12.9 ng/g dry weight (dw), followed by those from commercial (5.23 ng/g dw), residential (3.30 ng/g dw), industrial (2.48 ng/g dw), and scenic zones (0.774 ng/g dw). Furthermore, strong and statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlations were observed for several pairs of LCMs (3cH2B vs. 5bcHdFB in the agricultural zone; 5bcHdFB vs. 2bcHdFB, 5bcHdFB vs. 3cH2B in the commercial zone; 5bcHdFB vs. 2bcHdFB in the industrial zone), indicating that they might have similar commercial applications and sources. Based on a newly established database containing 1173 LCMs, suspect screening was applied to discover other LCMs in these 96 soil samples using gas chromatograph coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF/MS). We tentatively identified 51 LCM formulas with 69 chemical structures. Collectively, this study provides the first evidence for the occurrence of LCMs in soil samples, and suggests that LCMs could be widely distributed across all five urban functional zones.

Distribution of flame retardants among indoor dust, airborne particles and vapour phase from Beijing: spatial-temporal variation and human exposure characteristics

The occurrence and distribution of 10 brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and 10 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in indoor dust, total suspended particles (TSP), and vapour phase from offices (n = 10), homes (n = 9), and day-care centres (n = 10) in Beijing, China. Three types of samples were collected biweekly from one office and one home over a year to examine temporal trends. BFRs in dust significantly correlated with those in TSP, while OPFRs significantly correlated among all three matrices. In addition, BFRs in dust (ng/g) and TSP (pg/m³) exhibited similar temporal trends with higher levels in the cold season, whereas OPFRs in TSP and vapour phase (pg/m³) showed similar temporal trends with higher levels in the warm season. The geometric mean concentrations of BFRs and OPFRs in the three matrices from the above mentioned three types of indoor microenvironments were used for exposure and health risk estimation, and ∑₇OPFRs showed much higher hazard index (HI) values than ∑₁₀BFRs for all subpopulations, and inhalation of OPFRs was a major risk source. With the volatility of flame retardants (FRs) decreasing, the contribution of dust ingestion and dermal absorption showed an increasing trend, and the contribution of inhalation exhibited a gradual decreasing trend, which implied the dominant exposure pathway to FRs is strongly related to the vapour pressure (25 °C, Pa) of these substances. Using a single type of microenvironment or the collection of samples at a single point in time can lead to overestimation or underestimation of overall exposure and risk for people to some extent. The correlations of FRs in dust, TSP, and vapour phase from indoor microenvironments, as well as their temporal trends were first reported in this study, which will provide a basis for more accurate FR exposure assessments in the future.

Profiling of multiple classes of flame retardants in house dust in China: Pattern analysis and human exposure assessment

Legacy [e.g., brominated- (BFRs)] and alternative [e.g., organophosphate- (OPFRs) and nitrogenous- (NFRs)] flame retardants have a propensity to migrate out of consumer products, and thus are dispersed in indoor microenvironments. In this study, simultaneous presence of 11 BFRs, 18 OPFRs and 11 NFRs were measured in house dust collected from Tianjin, China. OPFRs were found at the highest concentrations, with a median value of 3200 ng/g, followed by NFRs (2600) and BFRs (1600). Tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (median: 1800 ng/g), melamine (1100), and BDE-209 (870) were the top three most abundant chemicals in the respective groups. Location-specific patterns of flame retardant concentrations were found with 30%, 20% and 10% of samples were predominated by OPFRs, NFRs and BFRs, respectively, and the remaining samples contained by two or more of the chemical groups occurring concurrently. Network and cluster analysis results indicated the existence of multiple sources of flame retardants in the indoor microenvironment. Estimated human daily intakes via indoor dust ingestion were approximately several tens of ng/kg bw/day and were below their respective reference dose values. Our results indicate widespread occurrence of multiple flame retardant families in indoor dust and suggest need for continued monitoring and efforts to reduce exposures through dust ingestion.

Legacy and emerging flame retardants in indoor and outdoor dust from Indo-Gangetic Region (Patna) of India: implication for source apportionment and health risk exposure

The fate of legacy and emerging flame retardants are poorly reported in developing countries, including India. Also, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) application-based source apportionment of these pollutants is less comprehensive. This study analyzed the contamination level and sources of 25 flame retardants in dust from India's central Indo-Gangetic Plain (Patna city) using the PCA and PMF model. Dust samples were collected from various functional areas of indoor (n = 22) and outdoor (n = 16) environments. The sum of four groups of FRs in indoor dust (median 8080 ng/g) was 3-4 times greater than the outdoor dust (median 2410 ng/g). The novel-brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPFRs) were more dominant than polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), indicating the influence of worldwide elimination of PBDEs. The median concentration of ∑NBFRs in indoor and outdoor dust was 1210 ng/g and 6820 ng/g, while the median concentration of ∑OPFRs was measured to be 383 ng/g and 1210 ng/g, respectively. Likewise, ∑₉PBDEs in indoor and outdoor dust ranged from 2-1040 ng/g (median 38.8 ng/g) to 0.62-249 ng/g (median 10.7 ng/g), respectively. Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) was identified as the most abundant NBFR in dust, comprising 99.9% of ∑₆NBFR, while tri-cresyl phosphates (TMPPs) showed the highest concentration among OPFR and accounted for 75% ∑₈OPFRs. The PMF analysis indicated that a significant fraction of FRs in the dust (80%) could derive from plastics, textiles, polyurethane foam, anti-foam agents, PVC, paint, and coatings. In comparison, debromination of higher PBDE congeners contributed 20% in the dust environment. FR's estimated daily exposure risk in dust showed dermal absorption as the main route of FR's intake to adult and children populations. Children were more vulnerable to the risk of FRs than the adult population. The estimated daily exposure risk for selected FRs in this study was 4-6 orders of magnitude lesser than the respective reference dose (RfD), proposing negligible health risk.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in indoor dusts from industrial factories, offices, and houses in northern Vietnam: Contamination characteristics and human exposure

Information about the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in indoor dusts from various industrial sectors in Southeast Asia is still scarce. In this study, concentrations and congener-specific profiles of PBDEs were determined in indoor dusts from industrial factories, offices, and houses in northern Vietnam. Levels of Σ8PBDEs were higher in the office dusts (median 270; range 230-300 ng/g) and factory dusts (170; 89-510 ng/g) than in the house dusts (61; 25-140 ng/g). BDE-209 was the most dominant congener, accounting for 27-98% (average 62%) of Σ8PBDEs, suggesting the abundance of products treated with deca-BDE mixtures. Residential, commercial, and industrial activities in the studied locations of this survey were not significant sources of PBDEs as compared to those of informal waste processing activities in Vietnam. Relatively low PBDE concentrations detected in our dust samples partially reflect effectiveness of the global PBDE phase-out. Human exposure and health risk associated with dust-bound PBDEs were estimated, indicating acceptable levels of risk (i.e., neurobehavioral effects). The contributions of workplace dusts in total daily intake doses of PBDEs via dust ingestion were more important for local workers in informal recycling areas than factory workers and general population, raising the need of appropriate labor protection measures.

A nationwide survey of 20 legacy brominated flame retardants in indoor dust from China: continuing occurrence, national distribution, and implication for human exposure

Despite the restrictions on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs), these chemicals are still ubiquitous environmental pollutants. In this study, we measured the concentrations and profiles of 17 PBDE congeners and 3 HBCDD isomers in indoor dust samples collected from 23 provinces and cities across China. The summed concentrations of PBDEs (Σ₁₇PBDEs) ranged from 4.19 to 817 ng/g, with an average of 171 ± 184 ng/g. BDE-209 was the most abundant congener. The concentrations of HBCDDs ranged from 6.65 to 1335 ng/g, with an average of 236 ± 324 ng/g. Unlike commercial HBCDD formulations, α-HBCDD was the predominant isomer in the indoor dust samples analyzed. Geographical distributions showed that the concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDDs varied significantly among different regions. Higher PBDE and HBCDD levels were observed in samples from eastern coastal and economically developed regions. Further, we estimated the daily intakes of PBDEs and HBCDDs through the routes of dust ingestion and dust dermal absorption for different age groups. Dust dermal absorption is an unneglectable exposure pathway to PBDEs and HBCDs for the Chinese population. Among the age groups, infants had the highest exposure via dust dermal absorption, and toddlers had the highest exposure via dust ingestion. Compared with the threshold values, the exposure doses of PBDEs and HBCDDs are unlikely to pose significant health concerns for both infants and adults in China. This is the first national survey of PBDEs and HBCDDs in indoor dust samples across China after the restriction.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane affects embryonic development by interfering with nuclear F-actin in zygotes and leads to cognitive and social disorders in offspring mice

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is a novel retardant. DBDPE is used in various flammable consumer products such as electronics, building materials, textiles, and children's toys. The presence of DBDPE in humans makes it extremely urgent to assess the health effects of DBDPE exposure. Here, we used female mice as an animal model to investigate the effects of DBDPE on embryonic development and offspring health. The results showed that 50 μg/kg bw/day of DBDPE exposure did not affect spindle rotation in oocytes after fertilization, but led to a decrease of pronuclei (PN) in zygotes. Further investigation found that DBDPE interferes with the self-assembly of F-actin in PN, resulting in PN reduction, DNA damage, and reduced expression of zygotic genome activating genes, and finally leading to abnormal embryonic development. More importantly, we found that maternal DBDPE exposure did not affect the growth and development of the first generation of offspring (F1) mice, but resulted in behavioral defects in F1 mice. Female F1 mice from DBDPE-exposed mothers exhibited increased motor activity and deficits in social behavior. Both female and male F1 mice from DBDPE-exposed mothers exhibited cognitive memory impairment. These results suggest that DBDPE has developmental toxicity on embryos and has a cross-generational interference effect. It is suggested that people should pay attention to the reproductive toxicity of DBDPE. In addition, it also provides a reference for studying the origin of neurological diseases and indicates that adult diseases caused by environmental pollutants may have begun in the embryonic stage.

Comprehensive analysis of emerging flame retardants, a risk factor to prostate cancer?

Among man-made chemicals, flame retardants have caused great environmental concerns. Several studies in recent years have investigated potential sources of flame retardants, environmental distribution, exposure to wild animals and humans and toxicity. However, studies focusing on the prediction of toxicity of flame retardants are limited. Herein, toxicological and tumor databases were applied to evaluate the potential correlation between emerging flame retardants (EFRs) and tumors. Further analysis also showed that EFRs may be associated with prostate cancer (PCa). After constructing an EFR-related prognostic prediction model, it was established that EFR-related genes showed a strong prognostic predictive value among PCa patients. In addition, compared with the clinical characteristics model (including age, Gleason score, prostate-specific antigen level, T stage and N stage), a prognostic predictive model-based risk score demonstrated a better predictive value of PCa. The AUC of the 31-gene prognostic signature at 1, 3 and 5 years was 0.843, 0.824 and 0.819, respectively. In addition, the AUC of the risk score, Gleason score, age, PSA level, T stage and N stage were 0.843, 0.637, 0.414, 0.490, 0.668 and 0.517, respectively. Our analysis provides a comprehensive map of EFR interaction genes and demonstrated a new direction for environmentally hazardous materials and diseases.

A natural environmental chamber study on the emissions and fate of organophosphate esters in the indoor environment

In this study, we investigated the emission and fate of 9 organophosphate esters (OPEs) from a natural environment chamber, in which three environment matrices (i.e., air, dust, and window film samples) as well as three decoration materials (i.e., laminate flooring, latex paint, and nonwoven paper) were collected within gradient variation of room temperature and relative humidity. ΣAlkyl-OPEs and ΣCl-OPEs were the predominant classes in the three environment matrices, accounting - on average - for 98.7%, 99.8% and 99.3% of ΣOPEs in indoor dust, air and window film, respectively. TBOEP was the most abundant OPE in air, dust, and laminate flooring, respectively, while tris (2-chloro-isopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) and tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) in nonwoven paper and latex paint, respectively. The results showed that higher room temperature expedited the emission of OPEs to indoor air. However, the room temperature and relative humidity had no effect on the levels of OPEs in dust. The OPEs equilibrium time in indoor environment may be dependent on room temperature and relative humidity. The area specific emission rates (SERs) of the three materials were calculated, and an optimal expression based on the concept of mass balance model was constructed, preliminarily revealing a general relationship between OPEs source and sink effects in indoor environment.

Diastereomer- and enantiomer-selective accumulation and depuration of 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl) cyclohexanes (DBE-DBCHs) and 1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctanes (TBCOs) in earthworms (Eisenia fetida)

Due to the regulation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), much attention has been paid to its potential substitutes, 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl) cyclohexane (DBE-DBCH) and 1,2,5,6-tetrabromocyclooctane (TBCO). DBE-DBCH and TBCO contain several diastereomers and enantiomers, which may exhibit different environmental behaviors and biological effects. In this study, the accumulation and depuration of individual DBE-DBCH and TBCO diastereomers by earthworms (Eisenia fetida) from diastereomer-contaminated soils were evaluated. The accumulation and depuration kinetics of DBE-DBCH and TBCO diastereomers followed one-compartment first-order kinetics. The biota soil accumulation factor (BSAF) of β-DBE-DBCH (2.74 g_oc g_lip^-1) was 1.26 times that of α-DBE-DBCH (2.18 g_oc g_lip^-1), while the BSAF of β-TBCO (2.15 g_oc g_lip^-1) was 1.62 times that of α-TBCO (1.3 g_oc g_lip^-1), showing the diastereomer-specific accumulation of DBE-DBCH and TBCO. DBE-DBCH and TBCO diastereomers appeared to be transformed in earthworm-soil systems; however, no evidence of bioisomerization of the four diastereomers in earthworms was found, and no potential metabolites of debromination and hydroxylation were detected. Furthermore, the selective enrichment of E₁-α-DBE-DBCH and E₁-β-DBE-DBCH (E₁ represents the first enantiomer eluted) occurred in earthworms as the enantiomer fractions (EFs) for α-DBE-DBCH (0.562-0.763) and β-DBE-DBCH (0.516-0.647) were significantly greater than those in the technical products (0.501 for α-DBE-DBCH and 0.497 for β-DBE-DBCH, p < 0.05), especially in the depuration stage. The results demonstrated the diastereomer- and enantiomer-selective accumulation of DBE-DBCH and the diastereomer-selective accumulation of TBCO in the earthworm.

Low-level alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in indoor dust from Adelaide, South Australia decades since national legislative control on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

Since commercial polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been globally banned or restricted in 2000s, alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) appear increasingly dominant over PBDEs in many countries/regions. In this study, low levels of AHFRs were unexpectedly observed in the indoor dust from Adelaide, South Australia. Anti-dechlorane plus (anti-DP) was the most frequently detected AHFR with a median concentration of 1.28 ng/g, while other AFHRs were less detected (detection frequency < 50%). The levels of ΣPBDEs (496 ng/g, median) and ΣAHFRs (160 ng/g) and the ratio of ΣAHFRs/ΣPBDEs (0.32) were much lower than those investigated in Australian indoor dust previously. The findings were different to the trend for PBDEs and AHFRs from other countries over the past two decades. No significant correlation was determined between DP and PBDE congeners, indicating their different sources in dust. The human exposure assessment suggested that dust ingestion was the predominant pathway of PBDEs and AHFRs exposure for toddlers, while dermal absorption may be the dominant pathway for adults. The estimated daily intake (EDI) suggested low health risks via dust ingestion and dermal contact for general populations in Adelaide. This study contributes to the knowledge on region-specific FR contamination in indoor environments and related human exposure risk.

Historical record of legacy and alternative halogenated flame retardants in dated sediment from a highly industrialized saltwater lake in Korea

Legacy and alternative halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and dechlorane plus (DP), were measured in dated sediments from a highly industrialized lake in Korea. All HFRs were detected in almost all of the sediment depth layers for more than 70 years, indicating a history of long-term contamination. Similar historical trends in PBDEs, 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), and DP were observed in dated sediments, whereas decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-octabromo-1,3,3-trimethyl-1-phenylindane (OBIND) concentrations sharply increased since the 1990s. Moreover, the concentration ratios of DBDPE/BDE 209 increased from the early 1990s to the present. Our findings suggest that DBDPE and OBIND have been used as HFR alternatives. The historical record of the concentrations and profiles of legacy and alternative HFRs corresponded with industrial activities, consumption of FRs, and coastal development activities. Inventories of legacy and alternative HFRs were similar to those reported for highly industrialized regions around the globe.

Source and Distribution of Emerging and Legacy Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have received significant and ongoing attention. To establish favorable regulatory policies, it is vital to investigate the occurrence, source, and budgets of POPs worldwide. POPs including phthalic acid esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and highly chlorinated flame retardants (HFRs) have not yet been examined in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO). In this study, the distribution of POPs has been investigated from surface sediments with the depth of 4369-5742 m in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB) of EIO. The average (±SD) concentrations of ∑₁₁PAEs, ∑₁₁OPEs, ∑₄ BFRs, and ∑₅HFRs were 1202.0 ± 274.36 ng g^-1 dw, 15.3 ± 7.23 ng g^-1 dw, 327.6 ± 211.74 pg g^-1 dw, and 7.9 ± 7.45 pg g^-1 dw, respectively. The high abundance of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAEs, chlorinated OPEs, LMW BDEs, and anti-Dechlorane Plus indicated the pollution characteristics in the EIO. Correlation analysis demonstrated that LMW compounds may be derived from the high-molecular-weight compounds. The monsoon circulation, currents, and Antarctic Bottom Water may be the main drivers. POP accumulation rate, depositional flux, and mass inventory in the Indian Ocean were also estimated.

Identification of Triazine UV Filters as an Emerging Class of Abundant, Ubiquitous Pollutants in Indoor Dust and Air from South China: Call for More Concerns on Their Occurrence and Human Exposure

Triazine UV filters are an important class of UV filters, but knowledge on their environmental occurrence and human exposure remains largely unknown. In this study, we performed a targeted analysis of 17 emerging triazine UV filters in indoor dust and indoor air from South China based on a newly developed LC-MS/MS method. A total of 12 of the 17 emerging triazine UV filters were first positively detected in the dust and air samples. Ethylhexyl triazone (EHT) and bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) were identified as the most abundant compounds. The median total concentrations of triazine UV filters reached 3860 ng/g in indoor dust and 1590 pg/m³ in indoor air. Gas-particle partitioning analysis showed that triazine UV filters were predominant in the particle phase in ambient air. Significant concentration correlations were observed among most triazine UV filters. The estimated daily intake of triazine UV filters through dust ingestion and air inhalation for toddlers under high-end exposure scenarios was up to 839 ng/kg bw/day, but a lack of toxic thresholds hampers accurate risk assessment. Our work highlights another emerging class of UV filters that significantly contribute to indoor chemical mixtures and expresses concerns over their occurrence and human exposure.

Gas-particle partition and size-segregated distribution of flame retardants in indoor and outdoor air: Reevaluation on the role of fine particles in human exposure

In this study, we investigated the distribution of brominated and organophosphate flame retardants (BFRs and OPFRs) in the paired gaseous and nine size-segregated particulate samples collected from 8 typical indoor compartments and monthly outdoor in Xinxiang, China, respectively. For the indoor environments, total concentrations of FRs (Σ₁₉FRs) in bulk air ranged from 3.9 ng/m³ to 37.5 ng/m³, with that in children recreation center (37.5 ng/m³) and furniture store (28.7 ng/m³) showing highest levels. In the outdoor air, Σ₁₉FRs ranged from 3.1 ng/m³ to 13.6 ng/m³ among the 12 months, with that from late spring and summer being the highest. OPFRs had higher concentration than BFRs, with the total concentration of OPFRs accounting for 77%-99% of ∑₁₉FRs. TCIPP (tris(chloroiso-propyl) phosphate), TCEP (tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate), TEP (triethyl phosphate) and DBDPE (decabromodiphenyl ethane), BDE-209 (decabromodiphenyl ether) were the predominant analogs. Specifically, BFRs tended to enrich in gas phase indoors and coarse particles (aerodynamic diameters >3.3 μm) outdoors, but OPFRs mainly distributed in coarse particles both indoors and outdoors. The size distribution patterns varied among FRs, with the higher volatile FRs (e.g., TCEP, TCIPP) distributed more uniformly across particulate size. Although the distribution patterns of FRs in air were driven by multiple factors, organic carbon and element carbon in particulate matter had an influence to a certain extent. Health risks from exposure to FRs were characterized via the hazard quotient approaches. The total noncarcinogenic risks of ∑₁₆FRs from inhalation were higher than that from air to skin transport, and the risks resulted from coarse particle-bound ∑₁₆FRs (>3.3 μm) and gas phase were both significantly higher than that from fine fraction (<3.3 μm) in all scenarios, implying that FRs in coarse particles should not be underestimated.

Bis (2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate showed poor penetrability but increased the permeability of blood brain barrier: Evidences from in vitro and in vivo studies

Bis(2ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), a replacement for restricted flame retardants, has become ubiquitous in the environment. To reveal the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanism of TBPH, we first evaluated its penetrability through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using hCMEC/D3 cells as in vitro model, and found TBPH had poor penetrability through BBB with a maximum Papp of 14.8 × 10^-6 cms^-1. Further study using transgenetic zebrafish (Tg flk1: EGFP) as in vivo model confirmed that TBPH could affect the BBB permeability, probably via affecting the transcription of genes encoding tight junction proteins. Finally, wild type zebrafish embryos/larvae were exposed to TBPH to evaluate the neurotoxicity. The neurodevelopment, neurotransmitters and locomotor activity of zebrafish larvae did not changed, which may be because TBPH can hardly cross the BBB to pose direct exposure to the central nervous system. However, the transcription of opsins genes and visual response to light stimulation in zebrafish larvae were inhibited, pointing to additional mechanism that may cause visual impairment indirectly. Above all, these results can help further understand the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanism by TBPH, and also pointed out potential risk of this chemical to aquatic organisms.

Emerging and legacy flame retardants in indoor air and dust samples of Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain)

Flame retardants (FRs) are widely used in consumer products including furniture foam and electronic equipment such as computers, monitors and TVs. Over time, FRs can easily migrate into the surrounding environments. Since brominated FRs (BFRs) has been determined of high concern due to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and potential toxicity, novel FRs have emerged. The present study was aimed at identifying and quantifying the indoor levels of 41 legacy and novel FRs, which include 20 OPFRs and 21 HFRs (8 PBDEs, 3 HBCDDs, 5 NBFRs and 5 DECs) in Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain). The results have confirmed the presence of both legacy and novel FRs in air and dust of homes, schools and offices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first European study measuring OPFRs at office environments and also confirming the presence of the following OPFRs: TEP, TCIPP, T2IPPP, TPPO, DCP, TMCP and B4IPPPP in indoor air, even some of them at high levels. OPFRs in general and TCIPP in particular showed high concentrations in air (94,599 pg/m³ and 72,281 pg/m³, respectively) and dust (32,084 ng/g and 13,496 ng/g, respectively) samples collected in indoor environments. HBCDDs were found at high levels in dust (32,185 ng/g), whereas the presence of PBDEs and DECs were low in both matrices (<160 pg/m³ in air and <832 ng/g in dust). NBFRs showed higher levels than the two legacy FRs groups, which is supported by the current restrictions of these FRs (640 pg/m³ in air and 1291 ng/g in dust). Samples of schools had significantly lower levels of NBFRs, but significantly higher concentrations of HFRs in air than in home samples, while dust levels of HFRs were significantly lower than those in samples of offices. Regarding human health risks, the current assessment suggests that those derived from exposure to FRs were lower -although close- to assumable risks, evidencing the potential of FRs for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, mainly due to the exposure to TCIPP, which was the main contributor together with ΣHBCDDs and also EHDPP.

Quantum Chemical Calculation and Evaluation of Partition Coefficients for Classical and Emerging Environmentally Relevant Organic Compounds

Octanol/water (K_OW), octanol/air (K_OA), and hexadecane/air (K_HdA) partition coefficients are calculated for 67 organic compounds of environmental concern using computational chemistry. The extended CRENSO workflow applied here includes the calculation of extensive conformer ensembles with semiempirical methods and refinement through density functional theory, taking into account solvation models, especially COSMO-RS, and thermostatistical contributions. This approach is particularly advantageous for describing large and nonrigid molecules. With regard to K_OW and K_HdA, one can refer to many experimental data from direct and indirect measurement methods, and very good matches with results from our quantum chemical workflow are evident. In the case of the K_OA values, however, good matches are only obtained for the experimentally determined values. Larger systematic deviations between data computed here and available, nonexperimental quantitative structure-activity relationship literature data occur in particular for phthalic acid esters and organophosphate esters. From a critical analysis of the coefficients calculated in this work and comparison with available literature data, we conclude that the presented quantum chemical composite approach is the most powerful so far for calculating reliable partition coefficients because all physical contributions to the conformational free energy are considered and the structure ensembles for the two phases are generated independently and consistently.

Size distribution and inhalation exposure of airborne particle-bound polybrominated diphenyl ethers, new brominated flame retardants, organophosphate esters, and chlorinated paraffins at urban open consumption place

At present, the global urban population has exceeded half of the total population and is still on the rise. Urban air pollution has attracted much attention, but most of the research focuses on typical pollution sources and indoor environment. This study reports the occurrence characteristics of particle-bound polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) at urban open consumption place. Among those pollutants detected in this study, the level of CPs was generally higher than other urban outdoor environments, and even higher than few indoor environments, such as house in Guangzhou (China) and Stockholm (Sweden). The size distributions of PBDEs and NBFRs exhibited bimodal peaks and that of SCCPs presented a unimodal peak, whereas no obvious trend was observed for OPEs or MCCPs. Additionally, the results of calculating the deposition fluxes of target pollutants in various regions based on the size distribution confirmed that total deposition was dominated by deposition in the head airways and alveolar region, and inhalation exposure in the current environment poses no significant health risk. Both discrepancy of the spatial distribution and principal component analysis indicated that sources of these organic pollutants may be related to the type of stores. Various construction and decoration materials might have been responsible for the high concentrations of OPEs and CPs, and thus, these materials require further analysis.

A meta-analysis of factors influencing concentrations of brominated flame retardants and organophosphate esters in indoor dust

Current assessments of human exposure to flame retardants (FRs) via dust ingestion rely on measurements of FR concentrations in dust samples collected at specific points in time and space. Such exposure assessments are rendered further uncertain by the possibility of within-room and within-building spatial and temporal variability, differences in dust particle size fraction analysed, as well as differences in dust sampling approach. A meta-analysis of peer-reviewed data was undertaken to evaluate the impact of these factors on reported concentrations of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in dust and subsequent human exposure estimates. Except for a few cases, concentrations of FRs in elevated surface dust (ESD) exceeded significantly those in floor dust (FD). The implications of this for exposure assessment are not entirely clear. However, they imply that analysing FD only will underestimate exposure for adults who likely rarely ingest floor dust, while analysing ESD only would overestimate exposure for toddlers who likely rarely ingest elevated surface dust. Considerable within-building spatial variability was observed with no specific trend between concentrations of either BFRs or OPEs in living rooms and bedrooms in the same homes, implying that exposure assessments based solely on sampling one room are uncertain. Substantial differences in FR concentrations were observed in different particle size fractions of dust. This is likely partly attributable to the presence of abraded polymer particles/fibres with high FR concentrations in larger particle size fractions. This has implications for exposure assessment as adherence to skin and subsequent FR uptake via ingestion and dermal sorption varies with particle size. Analysing dust samples obtained from a householder vacuum cleaner (HHVC) compared with researcher collected dust (RCD) will underestimate human exposure to the most of studied contaminants. This is likely due to the losses of volatile FRs from HHVC dust over the extended period such dust spends in the dust bag. Temporal variability in FR concentrations is apparent during month-to-month or seasonal monitoring, with such variability likely due more to changes in room contents rather than seasonal temperature variation.

Potential environmental fate and risk based on the hydroxyl radical-initiated transformation of atmospheric 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2dibromoethyl)cyclohexane stereoisomers

1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH), as an emerging brominated flame retardant (EBFR) pollutant, has been often observed in the air, and to comprehend its fate in the environment is still challenging due to the diversity of its stereoisomers. In this work, the environmental transformation behavior and potential toxicological implications of TBECH stereoisomers under the oxidation of OH· in the gas phase were investigated by computational chemistry. Our results indicate the complexity of the TBECH transformation reactions and the diversity of its transformation products in the atmosphere. Although the reactions of TBECH enantiomers with OH· exhibit highly consistency, it is obvious that the reactions of the four diastereoisomers of TBECH with OH· and their subsequent reactions have both specificity and similarity. The dehydrogenation intermediates produced by H-abstraction of OH· in the initial reactions may undergo oxidative debromination, hydroxylation and decomposition reactions, leading to the transformation into low bromine and monohydroxy substituted compounds, as well as debrominated or unbrominated unsaturated fatty ketones. The toxicity assessments show that all transformation products are less toxic to aquatic organisms than TBECH, but some of them are still classified at toxic or harmful levels. More importantly, some transformation products still exhibit carcinogenic and teratogenic activity. To our knowledge, this study provides, for the first time, a deep insight into the transformation mechanism, kinetics, and environmental impacts of atmospheric TBECH by theoretical calculations.

Severe contamination and time trends of legacy and novel halogenated flame retardants in multiple environmental media from Lake Shihwa, Korea: Effectiveness of regulatory action

Novel halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) were introduced to industrial markets as alternatives to legacy brominated FRs (BFRs), such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). In the present study, PBDEs and their brominated and chlorinated alternatives, novel BFRs (NBFRs) and dechlorane plus (DP), were measured in multiple environmental matrices in a highly industrialized lake in Korea. Legacy and novel HFRs were detected in multiple samples, indicating ubiquitous contamination. Concentrations of HFRs in water and sediment observed in creeks running through machine, textiles, and automobile industrial complexes were significantly higher than those observed in inside and outside of the lake. Higher bioaccumulation levels of HFRs were observed in inshore compared with offshore waters. Results suggest that multi-matrix distribution of legacy and novel HFRs was dependent on the geographical proximity to industrial sources. Compared with previous studies, the highest levels of PBDEs and NBFRs were recorded in water samples on a global scale, implying on-going emissions from industrial activities. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was a dominant compound in water samples, whereas the concentrations of PBDEs, NBFRs, and DP in sediment were similar to each other. This suggests a shift in consumption from legacy to novel HFRs, preferentially in water environments. A significant declining trend in PBDEs was observed in water and sediment collected between 2008 and 2015, indicating the effectiveness of regulatory actions. Based on their environmental occurrence and bioaccumulation potential, pentabromoethylbenzene and bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate may pose emerging concerns regarding contamination of aquatic environments.

Contamination status, emission sources, and human health risk of brominated flame retardants in urban indoor dust from Hanoi, Vietnam: the replacement of legacy polybrominated diphenyl ether mixtures by alternative formulations

This study investigated the occurrence, distribution of several additive brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and some novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in urban indoor dust collected from ten inner districts of Hanoi, Vietnam to assess the contamination status, emission sources, as well as their associated human exposure through indoor dust ingestion and health risks. Total concentrations of PBDEs and NBFRs in indoor dust samples ranged from 43 to 480 ng g^-1 (median 170 ng g^-1) and from 56 to 2200 ng g^-1 (median 180 ng g^-1), respectively. The most abundant PBDE congener in these dust samples was BDE-209 with concentrations ranging from 29 to 360 ng g^-1, accounting for 62.6-86.5% of total PBDE levels. Among the NBFRs analyzed, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the predominant compound with a mean contribution of 98.6% total NBFR amounts. Significant concentrations of DBDPE were detected in all dust samples (median 180 ng g^-1, range 54-2200 ng g^-1), due to DBDPE as a substitute for deca-BDE. Other NBFRs such as 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153) were found at very low levels. Based on the measured BFR concentrations, daily intake doses (IDs) of PBDEs and NBFRs via dust ingestion at exposure scenarios using the median and 95^th percentile levels for both adults and children were calculated for risk assessment. The results showed that the daily exposure doses via dust ingestion of all compounds, even in the high-exposure scenarios were also lower than their reference dose (RfD) values. The lifetime cancer risks (LTCR) were much lower than the threshold level (10^-6), which indicated the acceptable health risks resulting from indoor BFRs exposure for urban residents in Hanoi.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane exposure damaged the asymmetric division of mouse oocytes by inhibiting the inactivation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is a new brominated flame retardant and is widely added to flammable materials to prevent fire. Because it has been continuously detected in a variety of organisms and humans, it is important to reveal the biological toxicity of DBDPE. However, the influence of DBDPE for female reproduction is unclear. In this study, we investigated whether and how DBDPE exposure affects oocyte development. Female mice as a model were orally exposed to DBDPE by 0, 0.05, 0.5, 5, 50 μg/kg bw/day for 30 days (0.05 μg/kg bw/day is close to the environmental exposure concentration). We found that exposure of mice to DBDPE did not affect the first polar body extrusion (PBE) of oocytes. Strikingly, however, asymmetric division of oocytes was markedly impaired in 5 and 50 μg/kg bw/day DBDPE exposed group, which resulted in oocytes with larger polar bodies (PBs). Then, we further explored and found that DBDPE exposure inhibited the spindle migration and membrane protrusion in oocytes during anaphase of meiosis I (anaphase I), thereby impairing asymmetric division. Additionally, we found that DBDPE exposure suppressed the inactivation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1), resulting in the decrease of cytoplasmic formin2 (FMN2)-mediated F-actin polymerization in oocytes at the onset of anaphase I. Simultaneously, DBDPE exposure damaged the structural integrity of the spindle and the perpendicular relationship between spindle and cortex. These together led to the failure of spindle migration and membrane protrusion required for oocytes asymmetric division. Finally, DBDPE exposure injured the development of blastocysts, leading to blastocyst apoptosis.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), which have been developed as replacements for legacy flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are a class of alternative flame retardants with emerging and widespread applications. The ubiquitous occurrence of NBFRs in the aquatic environments and the potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms have initiated intense global concerns. The present article, therefore, identifies and analyzes the current state of knowledge on the occurrence, bioaccumulation, fates, and environmental and health risks of NBFRs in aquatic environments. The key findings from this review are that (1) the distribution of NBFRs are source-dependent in the global aquatic environments, and several NBFRs have been reported at higher concentrations than that of the legacy flame retardants; (2) high bioaccumulative properties have been found for all of the discussed NBFRs due to their strong hydrophobic characteristics and weak metabolic rates; (3) the limited information available suggests that NBFRs are resistant to biotic and abiotic degradation processes and that sorption to sludge and sediments are the main fate of NBFRs in the aquatic environments; (4) the results of ecological risk assessments have indicated the potential risks of NBFRs and have suggested that source areas are the most vulnerable environmental compartments. Knowledge gaps and perspectives for future research regarding the monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and development of ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments are proposed.

Legacy and novel flame retardants from indoor dust in Antarctica: Sources and human exposure

The air humidity in Antarctica is very low and this peculiar weather parameter make the use of flame retardants in research facilities highly needed for safety reasons, as fires are a major risk. Legacy and novel flame retardants (nFRs) including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), Dechlorane Plus (DP), and other nFRs were measured in indoor dust samples collected at research Stations in Antarctica: Gabriel de Castilla, Spain (GCS), Julio Escudero, Chile (JES), and onboard the RRS James Clark Ross, United Kingdom (RRS JCR). The GC-HRMS and LC-MS-MS analyses of dust samples revealed ∑₇PBDEs of 41.5 ± 43.8 ng/g in rooms at GCS, 18.7 ± 11.6 ng/g at JES, and 27.2 ± 37.9 ng/g onboard the RRS JCR. PBDE pattern was different between the sites and most abundant congeners were BDE-183 (40%) at GCS, BDE-99 (50%) at JES, and BDE-153 (37%) onboard the RRS JCR. The ∑₍₄₎HBCDs were 257 ± 407 ng/g, 14.9 ± 14.5 ng/g, and 761 ± 1043 ng/g in indoor dust collected in rooms at GCS, JES, and RRS JCR, respectively. The ∑₉nFRs were 224 ± 178 ng/g at GCS, 14.1 ± 13.8 ng/g at JES, and 194 ± 392 ng/g on the RRS JCR. Syn- and anti-DP were detected in most of the samples and both isomers showed the highest concentrations at GCS: 163 ± 93.6 and 48.5 ± 61.1 ng/g, respectively. The laboratory and living room showed the highest concentration of HBCDs, DPs, BTBPE. The wide variations in FR levels in dust from the three research facilities and between differently used rooms reflect the different origin of furnishing, building materials and equipment. The potential health risk associated to a daily exposure via dust ingestion was assessed for selected FRs: BDEs 47, 99, and 153, α-, β-, and γ-HBCD, BTBPE, syn- and anti-DP. Although the estimated exposures are below the available reference doses, caution is needed given the expected increasing use of novel chemicals without a comprehensive toxicological profile.

Preliminary results on polybrominated diphenyl ether contamination status in Croatian households and insights into children's exposure

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were analyzed in house dust samples collected in Croatian households. ∑PBDEs ranged between 1.1 ng g^-1 dust and 17662.4 ng g^-1 dust with BDE-99 being the most dominant congener accounting for approximately 60 %. The estimated daily intake (EDI) for toddlers as the most vulnerable population group ranged from 0.003 to 55.04 and from 0.01 to 110.07 ng kg^-1 bw day^-1 in the central and worst case scenario, respectively. The EDI calculated for the dominant BDE-99 in the sample with the highest ∑PBDE was in the worst case scenario 68.99 ng kg^-1 bw day^-1, which was quite close to the reference dose of 100 ng kg^-1 bw day^-1.

The brominated flame retardants TBECH and DPTE alter prostate growth, histology and gene expression patterns in the mouse

The brominated flame retardants (BFRs), 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2 dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH) and 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE) bind to the androgen receptor (AR). in vitro bioassays have shown that TBECH is a potent androgen agonist while DPTE is a potent AR antagonist. Both TBECH and DPTE alter gene expression associated with AR regulation. However, it remains to be determined if TBECH and DPTE can affect the prostate. For this reason, we exposed CD1 mice to a 1:1 mixture of TBECH diastereomers α and β, a 1:1 mixture of γ and δ, and to DPTE, and tested their effects on prostate growth, histology and gene expression profiles. Castrated mice were used to study the androgenic effects of TBECHαβ and TBECHγδ while the antagonistic effects of DPTE were studied in non-castrated mice. We observed that testosterone and TBECHγδ increased body and prostate weights while TBECHαβ affected neither of them; and that DPTE had no effect on body weight but reduced prostate weight drastically. Histomorphometric analysis of the prostate revealed epithelial and glandular alterations in the TBECHγδ group comparable to those in testosterone group while alterations in the TBECHαβ group were less pronounced. DPTE displayed androgen antagonist activity reminiscent of castration. The transcription profile of the prostate was altered by castration and exposure to testosterone and to TBECHγδ reversed several of these changes. Testosterone and TBECHγδ also regulated the expression of several androgen responsive genes implicated in prostate growth and cancer. While DPTE resulted in a drastic reduction in prostate weight, it only affected a small number of genes. The results indicate that TBECHγδ and DPTE are of high human health concern as they may contribute to changes in prostate growth, histology and function.

A review of 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)cyclohexane in the environment and assessment of its persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity

Following the ban of many historically-used flame retardants (FRs), numerous replacement chemicals have been produced and used in products, with some being identified as environmental contaminants. One of these replacement flame retardants is 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-cyclohexane (DBE-DBCH; formerly abbreviated as TBECH), which to date has not been identified for risk assessment and potential regulation. DBE-DBCH technical mixtures consist largely of α- and β-diastereomers with trace amounts of γ- and δ-DBE-DBCH. The α- and β-isomers are known contaminants in various environmental media. While current global use and production volumes of DBE-DBCH are unknown, recent studies identified that DBE-DBCH concentrations were among the highest of the measured bromine-based FRs in indoor and urban air in Europe. Yet our mass balance fugacity model and modeling of the physical-chemical properties of DBE-DBCH estimated only 1% partitioning to air with a half-life of 2.2 d atmospherically. In contrast, our modeling characterized DBE-DBCH adsorbing strongly to suspended particulates in the water column (~12%), settling onto sediment (2.5%) with minimal volatilization, but with most partitioning and adsorbing strongly to soil (~85%) with negligible volatilization and slow biodegradation. Our modeling further predicted that organisms would be exposed to DBE-DBCH through partitioning from the dissolved aquatic phase, soil, and by diet, and given its estimated logKow (5.24) and a half-life of 1.7 d in fish, DBE-DBCH is expected to bioaccumulate into lipophilic tissues. Low concentrations of DBE-DBCH are commonly measured in biota and humans, possibly because evidence suggests rapid metabolism. Yet toxicological effects are evident at low exposure concentrations: DBE-DBCH is a proven endocrine disruptor of sex and thyroid hormone pathways, with in vivo toxic effects on reproductive, metabolic, and other endpoints. The objectives of this review are to identify the current state of knowledge concerning DBE-DBCH through an evaluation of its persistence, potential for bioaccumulation, and characterization of its toxicity, while identifying areas for future research.

Update of the risk assessment of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) in food

The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2011 risk assessment on hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) in food. HBCDDs, predominantly mixtures of the stereoisomers α-, β- and γ-HBCDD, were widely used additive flame retardants. Concern has been raised because of the occurrence of HBCDDs in the environment, food and in humans. Main targets for toxicity are neurodevelopment, the liver, thyroid hormone homeostasis and the reproductive and immune systems. The CONTAM Panel concluded that the neurodevelopmental effects on behaviour in mice can be considered the critical effects. Based on effects on spontaneous behaviour in mice, the Panel identified a lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 0.9 mg/kg body weight (bw) as the Reference Point, corresponding to a body burden of 0.75 mg/kg bw. The chronic intake that would lead to the same body burden in humans was calculated to be 2.35 μg/kg bw per day. The derivation of a health-based guidance value (HBGV) was not considered appropriate. Instead, the margin of exposure (MOE) approach was applied to assess possible health concerns. Over 6,000 analytical results for HBCDDs in food were used to estimate the exposure across dietary surveys and age groups of the European population. The most important contributors to the chronic dietary LB exposure to HBCDDs were fish meat, eggs, livestock meat and poultry. The CONTAM Panel concluded that the resulting MOE values support the conclusion that current dietary exposure to HBCDDs across European countries does not raise a health concern. An exception is breastfed infants with high milk consumption, for which the lowest MOE values may raise a health concern.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in indoor and outdoor dust from Southeast Asia: An updated review on contamination status, human exposure, and future perspectives

Contamination status, potential emission sources, environmental fate, and human exposure risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are reviewed for indoor and outdoor dust from Southeast Asian countries, under an international comparison point of view. PBDEs have been widely detected in house, workplace, car, and road dust samples collected from Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The highest PBDE levels up to hundreds of μg/g were found in settled dust from some e-waste processing areas in Thailand and Vietnam. Concentrations of PBDEs in house, car, and road dust from this region were generally lower than those reported in China and Western developed countries. BDE-209 was the most predominant congener in almost all analyzed samples, reflecting the widespread application of materials and products treated with commercial deca-BDE mixtures in this region. The market demand and application rate of commercial PBDE mixtures in Southeast Asia were lower than those documented for other regions in the world. As a result, PBDE contamination levels in the environments (e.g., indoor and outdoor dust) and associated risks in these countries were not significantly high. However, more attention should be paid to informal processing activities and management strategies for modern wastes such as e-waste, plastics, and end-of-life vehicles. There exist several knowledge gaps about spatiotemporal trends, potential sources, risk assessment, inventory, management, and legislation regarding PBDEs in dust from this region, which should be filled by additional comprehensive, detailed studies with relevant inter-country/regional monitoring schemes.
