Facile One-Step Approach to Manufacture Environmentally Friendly Poly(vinyl alcohol) Bead Foam Products

PVA-based formulations as a design-technology platform for orally disintegrating film matrices

In the majority of pharmaceutical applications, polymers are employed extensively in a diverse range of pharmaceutical products, serving as indispensable components of contemporary solid oral dosage forms. A comprehensive understanding of the properties of polymers and selection the appropriate methods of characterization is essential for the design and development of novel drug delivery systems and manufacturing processes. Orally disintegrating film (ODF) formulations are considered to be a potential substitute to traditional oral dosage forms and an alternative method of drug administration for children and uncooperative adult patients, including those with swallowing difficulties. A multitude of pharmaceutical formulations with varying mechanical and biopharmaceutical properties have emerged from the modification of the original polymeric bulk. Here we propose different formulation approaches, i.e. solvent casting (SC), 3D printing (3DP), electrospinning (ES), and lyophilization (LP) that enabled us to adjust the disintegration time and the release profile of poorly water soluble haloperidol (HAL, BCS class II) from PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) based polymer films while maintaining similar hydrogel composition. In this study, the solubility of haloperidol in aqueous solution was improved by the addition of lactic acid. The prepared films were evaluated for their morphology (SEM, micro-CT), physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties. TMDSC, TGA and PXRD were employed for extensive thermal and structural analysis of fabricated materials and their stability. These results allowed us to establish correlations between preparation technology, structural characteristics and properties of PVA films and to adapt the suitable manufacturing technique of the ODFs to achieve appropriate HAL dissolution behaviour.

Design, fabrication, evaluation, and in vitro study of green biomaterial and antibacterial polymeric biofilms of polyvinyl alcohol/tannic acid/CuO/ SiO2

In this study, a three-component biofilm for rapid wound dressing consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/tannic acid (TA)/with CuO/SiO2 with different percentages (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt% NPs) is evaluated. In addition to controlling bleeding and absorption of blood and wound secretions, it protects the damaged tissue from the attack of microbes. It protects against viruses and thus reduces the treatment time. Analysis of biofilms morphology is performed by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), phases in biofilms were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, chemical bonds, and functional groups are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and mechanical tests are performed to evaluate the strength of the samples. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is applied to estimate the thermal stability of the biopolymer films with various percentages of CuO/SiO2 nanoparticles. Also, antibacterial test, bioactivity of the biofilms, the percentage of swelling ratio, and porosity of the samples were examined by immersing the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) and Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 14 days in vitro. The composite makeup of the TA/PVA sample, comprising 15 wt % CuO/SiO2 and containing 15 wt% of nanoparticles, exhibited superior heat resistance compared to other samples by an increase of 50 °C. This improvement can be attributed to the nanoparticles reaching their saturation point. The swelling ratio was assessed in both SBF and PBS, and in both instances, the sample increased by up to 10 wt% before decreasing, indicating the saturation of the nanoparticles.

Chemical Structures, Properties, and Applications of Selected Crude Oil-Based and Bio-Based Polymers

The growing perspective of running out of crude oil followed by increasing prices for all crude oil-based materials, e.g., crude oil-based polymers, which have a huge number of practical applications but are usually neither biodegradable nor environmentally friendly, has resulted in searching for their substitutes-namely, bio-based polymers. Currently, both these types of polymers are used in practice worldwide. Owing to the advantages and disadvantages occurring among plastics with different origin, in this current review data on selected popular crude oil-based and bio-based polymers has been collected in order to compare their practical applications resulting from their composition, chemical structure, and related physical and chemical properties. The main goal is to compare polymers in pairs, which have the same or similar practical applications, regardless of different origin and composition. It has been proven that many crude oil-based polymers can be effectively replaced by bio-based polymers without significant loss of properties that ensure practical applications. Additionally, biopolymers have higher potential than crude oil-based polymers in many modern applications. It is concluded that the future of polymers will belong to bio-based rather than crude oil-based polymers.
