Tracking the Progress and Mechanism Study of a Solvothermal in Situ Domino N-Alkylation Reaction of Triethylamine and Ammonia Assisted by Ferrous Sulfate

Mechanistic insights into an NH4OAc-promoted imine dance in Rh-catalysed multicomponent double C-H annulations through an N-retention/exchange dual channel

Developing new and understanding multicomponent reactions (MCRs) is an appealing but challenging task. Herein, Rh(iii)-catalyzed multicomponent double C-H annulations of cyclic diimines (or diketones and acetone), alkynes, and ammonium acetate to assemble functionalized 1,1'-biisoquinolines and C-bridged 1,1'-bisisoquinolines with controllable 14N/15N editing in one shot has been developed. Through a combination of isotopic-labeling (2H, 18O, and 15N) experiments, crystallography, and time-dependent ESI-MS, the reaction process was studied in detail. Ammonium acetate accounts for two rounds of Hofmann elimination and iminization, thus leading to an unprecedented imine dance, cyclic imine → N-alkenyl imine → NH imine. The N-alkenyl imine can immediately guide a C-H annulation (N-retention channel), and some of it is converted into NH-imine to trigger another annulation (N-exchange channel). The channels and 15N ratios can be regulated by the reaction mode and acidity. Moreover, the resulting 1,1'-biisoquinolines are a privileged ligand scaffold which is exemplified herein by a hydrazine-iodine exchange reaction to form drug-like benzo[c]cinnolines.

Series of the Largest Dish-Shaped Dysprosium Nanoclusters Formed by In Situ Reactions

A three-dimensional supermolecule structure is easily formed due to the diverse coordination modes of high-oxidation-state lanthanide metal ions. However, the design and construction of zero-dimensional (0 D) dish-shaped high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters are difficult. Herein, for the first time, we synthesized a series of the largest dish-shaped high-nuclearity lanthanide nanoclusters (1-4) by in situ tandem reactions under solvothermal one-pot conditions. The formation of 1 and 2 involved an in situ reaction of aldehydes and amines, while the condensation reactions between aldehydes occurred in 3 and 4. Based on the structural characteristics of the dish-shaped lanthanide clusters, we proposed two possible assembly mechanisms involving Dy₁ → Dy₇ → Dy₁₃ → Dy₁₉ (planar epitaxial growth mechanism) and Dy₁ → Dy₁₂ → Dy₁₈ → Dy₁₉ (planar internal growth mechanism).

A Domino Fusion of an Organic Ligand Depended on Metal-Induced and Oxygen Insertion, Unraveled by Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry, and DFT Calculations

Herein, the reaction of (1-methyl-1 H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methanamine (L1) with Co(H₂ O)₆ Cl₂ , in CH₃ CN at 120 °C, leading to the 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(1-methyl-1 H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)pyrazine (3), isolated as a dimeric cluster {[Co^II ₂ (3)Cl₄ ]⋅2 CH₃ CN} (2), is reported. When O₂ and H₂ O are present, (1-methyl-1 H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-carbonyl)amide (HL1') is first formed and crystallized as [Co^III (L1)₂ (L1')]Cl₂ ⋅2 H₂ O (4) before fusion of HL1' with L1, giving 1-methyl-N-(1-methyl-1 H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-carbonyl)-1 H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-carboxamide (HL2'') forming a one-dimensional (1D) chain of [Co^II ₃ (L2'')₂ Cl₄ ]_n (5). The combination of crystallography and mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of isolated crystals and the solutions taken from the reaction as a function time reveal seven intermediate steps leading to 2, but six steps for 5, for which a different sequence takes place. Control and isotope labeling experiments confirm the two carbonyl oxygen atoms in 5 originate from both air and water. The dependence on the metals, compared with FeCl₃ ⋅6 H₂ O leading to a stable triheteroarylmethyl radical, is quite astounding, which could be attributed to the different oxidation states of the metals and coordination modes confirmed by DFT calculations. This metal and valence dependent process is a very useful way for selectively obtaining these large molecules, which are unachievable by common organic synthesis.

In Situ Metal-Ligand Reactions under Solvent-Dependent Hydro(solvo)thermal Conditions: Structures, Mass Spectrometry, and Magnetism

In this study, four in situ hydro(solvo)thermal metal-ligand reactions, including oxidation (H₂L¹), C-C coupling (H₄L²), nitration (H₂L³), and condensation (HL^4-6), based on bis[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl]methane (H₂L⁰), in the presence of Dy^III ions, were carried out. The in situ metal-ligand reaction gave six new ligands existing in eight novel Dy^III coordination complexes, which were characterized by crystal structure, mass spectrometry, and magnetism.

In Situ Metal-Assisted Ligand Modification Induces Mn4 Cluster-to-Cluster Transformation: A Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry, and DFT Study

Dehydration of (S,S)-1,2-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol (H₄ L) to (Z)-1,2-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)ethenol) (H₃ L') was found to be metal-assisted, occurs under solvothermal conditions (H₂ O/CH₃ OH), and leads to [Mn^II ₄ (H₃ L)₄ Cl₂ ]Cl₂ ⋅5 H₂ O⋅5 CH₃ OH (Mn₄ L₄ ) and [Mn^II ₄ (H₂ L')₆ (μ₃ -OH)]Cl⋅4 CH₃ OH⋅H₂ O (Mn₄ L'₆ ), respectively. Their structures were determined by single-crystal XRD. Extensive ESI-MS studies on solutions and solids of the reaction led to the proposal consisting of an initial stepwise assembly of Mn₄ L₄ from the reactants via [MnL] and [Mn₂ L₂ ] below 80 °C, and then disassembly to [MnL] and [MnL₂ ] followed by ligand modification before reassembly to Mn₄ L'₆ via [MnL'], [MnL'₂ ], and [Mn₂ L'₃ ] with increasing solvothermal temperature up to 140 °C. Identification of intermediates [Mn₄ L_x L'_6-x ] (x=5, 4, 3, 2, 1) in the process further suggested an assembly/disassembly/in situ reaction/reassembly transformation mechanism. These results not only reveal that multiple phase transformations are possible even though they were not realized in the crystalline state, but also help to better understand the complex transformation process between coordination clusters during "black-box" reactions.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Gram-Scale Preferential C-H Arylation of Tertiary Phosphine

A general protocol for site-preferential mono-C-H arylation of tertiary phosphine ligands catalyzed by a ruthenium(II) complex was devised. This protocol gives access to a series of modified Buchwald-biaryl monophosphines on a gram scale in moderate to excellent yields. A catalytic cycle is proposed derived from knowledge of the intermediates observed by ESI-MS. Importantly, these monoarylated products could be further transformed into dibenzophosphole derivatives.

Thermally Induced trans-to-cis Isomerization and Its Photoinduced Reversal Monitored using Absorption and Luminescence: Cooperative Effect of Metal Coordination and Steric Substituent

For ethene derivatives with large groups the cis-isomer is often quite unstable and unavailable. Herein, we report an exception of two stable coordination complexes, (cis-L)ZnCl₂ , starting from trans-1,2-bis(1-R-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)ethene (R=H, L1; R=CH₃ , L2) ligands under solvothermal condition (T ≥140 °C). Using the intensity of the absorption and luminescence spectra as probes we proposed its progressive cis-to-trans reversal upon irradiation with UV light, which was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Similar results observed in the series of (cis-L2)M^II Cl₂ [M=Fe (4), Co (5), Ni (6)] demonstrate the universal strategy. The results of PXRD, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and DFT calculations support the above conclusion. NMR spectroscopy indicates that irradiation of 1 converts an optimized 71 % of the cis-isomer to trans, whereas the free trans-L1 ligand transforms to only 15 % cis-isomer under similar conditions.

Tracking the Process of a Solvothermal Domino Reaction Leading to a Stable Triheteroarylmethyl Radical: A Combined Crystallographic and Mass-Spectrometric Study

A new free carbon radical was obtained in a microwave-assisted solvothermal reaction of the primary amine (1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methanamine with FeCl₃ ⋅6 H₂ O in methanol at 140 °C. Through a combination of crystallography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, the reaction process was studied. The longest domino reaction includes 14 steps and forms up to 12 new covalent bonds (9 C-N and 3 C-C bonds) and 3 five-membered heterocycles. For the first time, the homolytic cleavage of a C-O bond was used to synthesize a triarylmethyl radical.
