Intramolecular π–π Interactions with a Chiral Auxiliary Ligand Control Diastereoselectivity in a Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complex

Blue Electrophosphorescence from Iridium(III) Phosphors Bearing Asymmetric Di-N-aryl 6-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-ylidene Chelates

Efficient blue phosphors remain a formidable challenge for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To circumvent this obstacle, a series of Ir(III)-based carbene complexes bearing asymmetric di-N-aryl 6-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-ylidene chelates, namely, f-ct6a‒c, are synthesized, and their structures and photophysical properties are comprehensively investigated. Moreover, these emitters can undergo interconversion in refluxing 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, catalyzed by a mixture of sodium acetate (NaOAc) and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (TsOH·H2O) without decomposition. All Ir(III) complexes present good photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL = 83-88%) with peak maximum (max.) at 443-452 nm and narrowed full width at half maximum (FWHM = 66-73 nm). Among all the fabricated OLED devices, f-ct6b delivers a max. external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 23.4% and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage CIEx , y coordinates of (0.14, 0.12), whereas the hyper-OLED device based on f-ct6a and 5H,9H,11H,15H-[1,4] benzazaborino [2,3,4-kl][1,4]benzazaborino[4',3',2':4,5][1,4]benzazaborino[3,2-b]phenazaborine-7,13-diamine, N7,N7,N13,N13,5,9,11,15-octaphenyl (ν-DABNA) exhibits max. EQE of 26.2% and CIEx , y of (0.12, 0.13). Finally, the corresponding tandem OLED with f-ct6b as dopant gives a max. luminance of over 10 000 cd m-2 and max. EQE of 42.1%, confirming their candidacies for making true-blue OLEDs.

Thermodynamic Resolution and Enantioselective Synthesis of C2-Symmetric Bis-sulfoxides Based on Chiral Iridium(III) Complexes

Enantiopure Λ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) (where dfppy is (4,6-difluoropheny)pyridine) were demonstrated to preferentially react with (S,S)-1,2-bis(arylsulfinyl)ethane and (R,R)-1,2-bis(arylsulfinyl)ethane, respectively, under thermodynamic equilibrium. Sequential treatment of Λ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) with C₂-symmetric bis-sulfoxides led to diastereoselective formation of the corresponding diastereomers Λ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(R,R)-bis-sulfoxide)](PF₆) in 90-92% and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(S,S)-bis-sulfoxide)](PF₆) in 88-90%, respectively. The uncoordinated (R,S)-bis-sulfoxides were afforded in 45% with >97% de values. Enantiopure (S,S)-bis-sulfoxides and (R,R)-bis-sulfoxides were respectively obtained by the release of sulfoxide ligands from the corresponding complexes in the presence of glycine in yields of 20-21% with 97-99% ee values. The enantioreceptors Λ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) and Δ-[Ir(dfppy)₂(MeCN)₂](PF₆) can be recycled and reused in the next reaction cycle. Moreover, a protocol for asymmetric oxidation of prochiral bis-sulfide into enantiopure C₂ symmetric bis-sulfoxide was also developed in a high enantioselectivity. The absolute configurations at the metal centers and sulfur atoms were determined by X-ray crystallography.

Diastereoselective Photooxidation and Reduction of Chiral Iridium(III) Complexes

A diastereoselective photooxidation of α-amino acid (AA) complexes into imino acid complexes using a chiral iridium(III) complex as a photosensitizer and stereo-controller under visible light irradiation and oxygen was developed. It was found that the oxidative rate of Δ-[Ir(pq)₂( L-AA)] (pq is 2-phenylquinoline) diastereomer is significantly higher than that of the corresponding Δ-[Ir(pq)₂( D-AA)] diastereomer, providing a new protocol for kinetic resolution of AAs via a nonenzymatic pathway. Moreover, the thermodynamic controlled strategy offered a complemental method for the diastereoselective hydrogenation of imine bonds using NaBH₄ as a reductant under the chiral Ir(III) complex as a stereo-controller. The combination of diastereoselective photooxidation and reduction processes results in a new protocol for deracemization of α-amino acids under mild conditions. Mechanism study strongly indicates that singlet oxygen is a key participant in the reaction and the α-C-H bond cleavage of AAs is the rate-determining step.
