Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Hydrogen-bonded assemblies of iron(II) spin crossover complexes

The paper reports on the synthesis, crystal structure, thermal and magnetic properties of spin crossover (SCO) salts containing the [Fe(bpp)2]2+ cation (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine) and different rigid polycarboxylate anions, such as anthracene-9,10-dicarboxylate (ADC), benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate (BPDC). Compound [Fe(bpp)2](ADC)·9H2O (1) shows a porous hydrogen-bonded structure with water molecules sitting in the channels. It contains low-spin (LS) Fe2+ cations that undergo crossover to the high-spin (HS) state upon dehydration. Anhydrous 1 remains HS on cooling at low temperatures. A similar magnetic behaviour is obtained for the partially protonated BTC salt [Fe(bpp)2](HBTC)·5H2O (2), showing a spin change concomitant with dehydration to a HS phase that undergoes gradual and partial SCO on cooling, affecting 25% of the Fe2+ cations. Instead, the BPDC salt [Fe(bpp)2](BPDC)·5H2O (3) has a ground HS state in its fully hydrated form.

Synthesis and crystal structure of an iron triazole complex resulting from the unexpected ligand cleavage of a triazolium carbene precursor

Typically reactions of N-heterocyclic carbenes with transition metals are straightforward and require a carbene salt, a base strong enough to deprotonate such a salt and a metal. Yet when carbene precursors are in the form of triazolium salts, reaction may not proceed as easily as expected. In our work, we intended to obtain a triazolylidene complex of iron(II) chloride, but due to the presence of small amounts of water in the tetrahydrofuran solvent used, bis(acetonitrile)tetrakis(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-κN4)iron(II) μ-oxido-bis[trichloridoferrate(III)] acetonitrile disolvate, [Fe(C9H9N3)4(CH3CN)2][Fe2Cl6O]·2CH3CN - an interesting anion with a linear geometry of the O atom - was formed instead of the iron carbene complex. Reaction proceeded via cleavage of the alkyl N-substituent of the triazolium salt. The formation of the product was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure and possible reaction pathways are discussed.

Stimuli-responsive magnetic materials: impact of spin and electronic modulation

Addressing molecular bistability as a function of external stimuli, especially in spin-crossover (SCO) and metal-to-metal electron transfer (MMET) systems, has seen a surge of interest in the field of molecule-based magnetic materials due to their enormous potential in various technological applications such as molecular spintronics, memory and electronic devices, switches, sensors, and many more. The fine-tuning of molecular components allow the design and synthesis of materials with tailored properties for these vast applications. In this Feature Article, we discuss a part of our research work into this broad topic, pertaining to the recent discoveries in the field of switchable molecular magnetic materials based on SCO and MMET systems, along with some historical background of the area and related accomplishments made in recent years.

Homochiral Mn3+ Spin-Crossover Complexes: A Structural and Spectroscopic Study

Structural, magnetic, and spectroscopic data on a Mn³⁺ spin-crossover complex with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal₂323, isolated in crystal lattices with five different counteranions, are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]X where X = ClO₄^– (1), BF₄^– (2), NO₃^– (3), Br^– (4), and I^– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ complex cation over the temperature range 5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin, complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective values: D_S=1 = +23.38(1) cm^–1, E_S=1 = +2.79(1) cm^–1, and D_S=2 = +6.9(3) cm^–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate, and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ in five lattices with different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed by the 4-OMe-Sal₂323 ligand.

Zero-field splitting parameters of the spin triplet and quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn³⁺ complex stabilized in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

High spin iron(ii) complexes based on imidazolyl- and 1,2,3-triazolyl-thione ligands and NCE (E = S, Se or BH3) co-ligands: effect of the S-functional group on the structural and magnetic properties

Differing magnetic behaviour in complexes of the type [FeII(N2S2)(NCE)2]: thione-based complexes are stabilised in the HS-state, whilst a previously reported picolylbenzylthioether–iron(ii) complex shows a hysteretic spin crossover behaviour.

Reverse Hofmann-Type Spin-Crossover Compound Showing a Multichannel Controllable Color Change in an Ambient Environment

Materials that demonstrate a multichannel controllable color change in response to external stimuli are fascinating for their potential applications in sensoring and displaying devices. Herein we report a Fe^II spin-crossover (SCO) compound that exhibits both solvatochromism and thermochromism under an ambient environment. This Hofmann-type compound possesses two different pores where the solvent guests can be removed in a two-step process. Because the loss of solvent guests modifies the spin state of magnetic centers, an unusual yellow-red-yellow two-step color change of crystals was detected. Moreover, because of the strong cooperativity of the spin centers, a dramatic red-to-yellow color change of crystals in response to a minute thermal perturbation around 303 K is triggered by an abrupt spin transition of the metal centers. The multichannel controllable dramatic color change demonstrated in the present compound highlights the sensoring and displaying roles of SCO materials.

Temperature dependence of desolvation effects in hydrogen-bonded spin crossover complexes

The synthesis, crystal structure and (photo)magnetic properties of the anhydrous spin crossover salt of formula [Fe(bpp)₂](C₆H₈O₄) (1) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; C₆H₈O₄ = adipate dianion), obtained by desolvation at 400 K of the original tetrahydrate in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation, are reported. This work offers a comparison between this compound and the previously reported hydrated material ([Fe(bpp)₂](C₆H₈O₄)·4H₂O, 1·4H₂O), highlighting the significance of the thermal conditions used in the dehydration-rehydration processes. In both compounds, a hydrogen-bonded network between iron(ii) complexes and adipate anions is observed. The original tetrahydrate (1·4H₂O) is low-spin and desolvation at 450 K triggers a low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) transition to an amorphous phase that remains stable over the whole temperature range of study. Surprisingly, the dehydrated compound at 400 K (1) keeps the crystallinity, undergoes a partial spin crossover (T_1/2 = 180 K) and a quantitative LS to HS photomagnetic conversion at low temperatures, with a T(LIESST) value of 61 K.

Polymer Optical Waveguide Sensor Based on Fe-Amino-Triazole Complex Molecular Switches

We report on a polymer-waveguide-based temperature sensing system relying on switchable molecular complexes. The polymer waveguide cladding is fabricated using a maskless lithographic optical system and replicated onto polymer material (i.e., PMMA) using a hot embossing device. An iron-amino-triazole molecular complex material (i.e., [Fe(Htrz)_2.85(NH₂-trz)_0.15](ClO₄)₂) is used to sense changes in ambient temperature. For this purpose, the core of the waveguide is filled with a mixture of core material (NOA68), and the molecular complex using doctor blading and UV curing is applied for solidification. The absorption spectrum of the molecular complex in the UV/VIS light range features two prominent absorption bands in the low-spin state. As temperature approaches room temperature, a spin-crossover transition occurs, and the molecular complex changes its color (i.e. spectral properties) from violet-pink to white. The measurement of the optical power transmitted through the waveguide as a function of temperature exhibits a memory effect with a hysteresis width of approx. 12 °C and sensitivity of 0.08 mW/°C. This enables optical rather than electronic temperature detection in environments where electromagnetic interference might influence the measurements.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition in Mn(Ta,Nb)2O6: An Experimental Investigation and First-Principle Study

The high-pressure and high-temperature behaviors of manganotantalite Mn(Ta,Nb)₂O₆ have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy combined with diamond anvil cell technique, as well as first-principle calculations. A pressure-induced reversible phase transition of manganotantalite occurs at 9.5 GPa and room temperature, accompanied by a large volume collapse (∼7.0%) and drastic color change from brownish-yellow to red. The space groups of low-pressure (LP) and high-pressure (HP) phases are the same (Pbcn), but the coordination numbers of Mn increase from six to eight and Ta increase from six to seven, respectively. The band gap becomes narrow from 2.37 to 1.59 eV. We determined the P-T phase diagram of manganotantalite with a positive Clapeyron slope of dP/dT = 0.0073 GPa/K. The P-V data were fitted to a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with B₀ = 149(4) GPa for the LP phase and B₀ = 188(3) GPa for the HP phase. The isothermal Grüneisen parameters were determined to be 0.23∼2.03 of the LP phase and 0.59∼0.86 of the HP phase for Raman modes. High-pressure behaviors of Mn(Ta,Nb)₂O₆ indicate that this kind of material is a potential effective pressure sensor to monitor pressure change or warn pressure abnormality.

Structure-function correlations in mononuclear manganese(iii) spin crossover systems with a big conjugated hexadentate Schiff-base ligand

This paper reports the syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of spin crossover (SCO) salts of formulae [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]SbF6 (1), [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]AsF6 (2), [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]PF6·1/2CH3OH (3) and [Mn(naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)]ClO4 (4), where (naphth-sal-N-1,5,8,12)2- (2,2'-((1E,14E)-2,6,10,14-tetraazapentadeca-1,14-diene-1,15-diyl)diphenolate) is a big conjugated hexadentate Schiff-base ligand. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated that complexes 1 and 2 showed a gradual one-step SCO between the high-spin (HS, S = 2) and low-spin (LS, S = 1) states without thermal hysteresis. The transition temperatures T1/2 of the SbF6 (1) and AsF6 (2) salts estimated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements are 164 and 171 K, respectively. The existence of the crystal solvent of complex 3 changes the supramolecular packing, leading to close ππ stacking interactions between the phenyl groups of the ligands. These close stacking interactions hinder the flexibility of the whole ligand, precluding the spin transformation of complex 3 and leading to its stabilization in the HS state in the temperature range of 2-300 K. For 4, crystal structure analysis indicates that the reduction in the anion size leads to close contacts between the naphthalene rings. These C-Hπ interactions provide a means for preventing the spin crossover occurring at low temperatures.

High temperature Fe(iii) spin crossover behaviours in three unprecedented FeIII–MII–FeIII (M = Fe, Cd) linear trinuclear complexes

An azo-based ligand of azotetrazolyl-2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (H₃ATD) was used to synthesize three Fe^III–M^II–Fe^III (M = Fe, Cd) linear trinuclear complexes with different high temperature spin crossover (SCO) behaviours for the terminal Fe^III ions.
