Sorption Mechanism, Kinetics, and Isotherms of Di- n-butyl Phthalate to Different Soil Particle-Size Fractions

Understanding the impact of soil components on the environmental existence of Nonylphenol:From the perspective of soil aggregates

Nonylphenol (4-NP) has significant adverse effects on the male reproductive system. 4-NP is commonly used in agriculture as a plasticizer and pesticide emulsifier. In the current study, two soil samples with different textures were collected to evaluate the impact of soil components on the environmental existence of 4-NP among soil aggregates. It was found that the presence of soil POM resulted in 4-NP exhibiting a significantly polarized distribution in soil aggregates, instead of the expected increase in content with decreasing particle size. High levels of organic matter and metal oxides result in a high carrying capacity of small aggregates for 4-NP in both soil textures, while POM results in a higher carrying capacity of large aggregates for 4-NP in clay soil. Another important finding is that the existence of 4-NP in soil was regulated by the percentage of aggregates. The results of contribution shown that although small aggregates in sand presented stronger 4-NP carrying capacity, whereas 4-NP was mainly distributed in large aggregates in sand. For clay soil, 4-NP was predominantly located in small aggregates with the 4-NP contributions of small aggregates amounting to 63.17%, despite the highest carrying capacity of 4-NP was observed in large aggregates. These results provide a theoretical basis to investigate the transport and transformation of 4-NP in the soil environment.

Effects of soil colloids on adsorption and migration of benzo(a)pyrene on contaminated sites under runoff infiltration processes

In the environment, soil colloids are widespread and possess a significant adsorption capacity. This makes them capable of transporting different pollutants, presenting a potential risk to human and ecological well-being. This study aimed to examine the adsorption and co-migration characteristics of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and soil colloids in areas contaminated with organic substances, utilizing both static and dynamic batch experiments. In the static adsorption experiments, it was observed that the adsorption of BaP onto soil colloids followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.966), and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.995). The BaP and soil colloids primarily formed bonds through π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The dynamic experimental outcomes revealed that elevating colloids concentration contributed to increased BaP mobility. Specifically, when the concentration of soil colloids in influent was 500 mg L-1, the mobility of BaP was 23.2 % compared to that without colloids of 13.4 %. Meanwhile, the lowering influent pH value contributed to increased BaP mobility. Specifically, when the influent pH value was 4.0, the mobility of BaP was 30.1 %. The BaP's mobility gradually declined as the initial concentration of BaP in polluted soil increased. Specifically, when the initial concentration of BaP in polluted soil was 5.27 mg kg-1, the mobility of BaP was 39.1 %. This study provides a support for controlling BaP pollution in soil and groundwater.

The Characteristics of Adsorption of Di-n-Butyl Phthalate by Surface Sediment from the Three Gorges Reservoir

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), recognized as endocrine disruptors, are identified as predominant organic pollutants in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), a representative PAE, has been extensively studied for its sources, distribution and ecological risks. However, there are few studies on the adsorption of DBP by sediment from the TGR, and the adsorption characteristics of surface sediment on DBP are not clear. Therefore, based on the actual sediment contents and particle sizes in the TGR, the kinetics and isothermal adsorption characteristics of surface sediment on DBP were investigated in this study. The results showed that the equilibrium time was 120 min, the adsorption kinetics were more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the sediment in water from the Yangtze River exhibited a higher adsorption rate and maximum adsorption amount on DBP than that observed in deionized water. Additionally, a decrease in DBP adsorption was observed with increasing sediment content, while sediment particle size and specific surface area had a slight influence. Analysis using SEM, TGA and FTIR revealed that organic matter on the sediment surface significantly contributed to DBP adsorption. This study contributes valuable insights into the adsorption characteristics of DBP by the surface sediment from the TGR, providing a scientific foundation for understanding the migration and transformation of DBP in this critical reservoir in China.

Phthalate ester (PAEs) accumulation in wheat tissues and dynamic changes of rhizosphere microorganisms in the field with plastic-film residue

Phthalates acid esters (PAEs) have accumulated in soil and crops like wheat as a result of the widespread usage of plastic films. It is yet unclear, nevertheless, how these dynamic variations in PAE accumulation in wheat tissues relate to rhizosphere bacteria in the field. In this work, a field root-bag experiment was conducted to examine the changes of PAEs accumulation in the rhizosphere soil and wheat tissues under film residue conditions at four different growth stages of wheat, and to clarify the roles played by the microbial community in the alterations. Results showed that the plastic film residues significantly increased the concentrations of PAEs in soils, wheat roots, straw and grains. The maximum ΣPAEs concentration in soils and different wheat tissues appeared at the maturity, with the ΣPAEs concentration of 1.57 mg kg-1, 4.77 mg kg-1, 5.21 mg kg-1, 1.81 mg kg-1 for rhizosphere soils, wheat roots, straw and grains, respectively. The plastic film residues significantly changed the functions and components of the bacterial community, increased the stochastic processes of the bacterial community assembly, and reduced the complexity and stability of the bacterial network. In addition, the present study identified some bacteria associated with plastic film residues and PAEs degradation in key-stone taxa, and their relative abundances were positive related to the ΣPAEs concentration in soils. The PAEs content and key-stone taxa in rhizosphere soil play a crucial role in the formation of rhizosphere soil bacterial communities. This field study provides valuable information for better understanding the role of microorganisms in the complex system consisting of film residue, soil and crops.

Environmental factors influencing the soil-air partitioning of semi-volatile petroleum hydrocarbons: Laboratory measurements and optimization model

The soil-air partition coefficient (KSA) values are commonly utilized to examine the fate of organic contaminants in soils; however, their measurement has been lacking for semi-volatile petroleum hydrocarbons within soil contaminated by crude oil. This research utilized a solid-phase fugacity meter to determine the KSA values of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under crucial environmental conditions. The results showed a notable increase in KSA values with the extent of crude oil contamination in soil. Specifically, in the 3 % crude oil treatment, the KSA values for n-alkanes and PAHs increased by 1.16 and 0.66 times, respectively, compared to the 1 % crude oil treatment. However, the KSA values decreased with changes in temperature, water content, and particle size within the specified experimental range. Among these factors, temperature played a significant role. The KSA values for n-alkanes and PAHs decreased by 0.27-0.89 and 0.61-0.83 times, respectively, with a temperature increase from 5 °C to 35 °C. Moreover, the research identified that the molecular weight of n-alkanes and PAHs contributed to variations in KSA values under identical environmental factors. With an increase in temperature from 5 °C to 35 °C, the range of n-alkanes present in the air phase expanded from C11 to C34, and PAHs showed elevated levels of acenaphthene (ACE) and benzo (b) fluoranthene (BbFA). Furthermore, heightened water content and particle size were observed to facilitate the volatilization of low molecular weight petroleum hydrocarbons. The effect of environmental variables on soil-air partitioning was evaluated using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) model, resulting in the attainment of the lowest log KSA values. These results illustrate that soil-air partitioning is a complex process influenced by various factors. In conclusion, this study improves our comprehension and predictive capabilities concerning the behavior and fate of n-alkanes and PAHs within soil-air systems.

The effects of co-existing acridine on adsorption-desorption behavior of carbazole in soils: Co-sorption and mechanism insight

Carbazole (CBZ) and acridine (ACR) are polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) widely found in combined contaminated soils, while investigations on organic-organic interactions have been very limited. In this study, batch experiments were carried out on five soils with different properties, taking CBZ as a representative of PANHs and ACR as a co-existing contaminant. The adsorption isotherms of CBZ (50-1000 μg/L) were nonlinear. Soil organic matter (SOM) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) showed positive correlations with CBZ adsorption-desorption coefficients. The adsorption mechanisms of CBZ involved hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, and cation-π bonding. Different concentrations of ACR had varying effects on CBZ. The adsorption of CBZ was inhibited with 250 μg/L ACR. The cooperative adsorption was observed on three soils with increasing ACR concentration (1000 μg/L) and led to more pronounced nonlinear isotherms. The S-shaped isotherms of ACR indicated that ACR was adsorbed to the soil surface in a perpendicular configuration. New adsorption sites were created allowing for increased CBZ adsorption through π-π interaction with ACR. Therefore, variations in soil properties and potential impacts of co-existing contaminants should be well considered when assessing the combined pollution of site soil. This will contribute to a more accurate estimation of environmental and health risks.

Effects of polyethylene microplastics occurrence on estrogens degradation in soil

Growing focus has been drawn to the continuous detection of high estrogens levels in the soil environment. Additionally, microplastics (MPs) are also of growing concern worldwide, which may affect the environmental behavior of estrogens. However, little is known about effects of MPs occurrence on estrogens degradation in soil. In this study, polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) were chosen to examine the influence on six common estrogens (estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), estriol (E3), diethylstilbestrol (DES), and 17α-ethinylestradiol (17α-EE2)) degradation. The results indicated that PE-MPs had little effect on the degradation of E3 and DES, and slightly affected the degradation of 17α-E2, however, significantly inhibited the degradation of E1, 17α-EE2, and 17β-E2. It was explained that (i) obvious oxidation reaction occurred on the surface of PE-MPs, indicating that PE-MPs might compete with estrogens for oxidation sites, such as redox and biological oxidation; (ii) PE-MPs significantly changed the bacterial community in soil, resulting in a decline in the abundance of some bacterial communities that biodegraded estrogens. Moreover, the rough surface of PE-MPs facilitated the estrogen-degrading bacterial species (especially for E1, E2, and EE2) to adhere, which decreased their reaction to estrogens. These findings are expected to deepen the understanding of the environmental behavior of typical estrogens in the coexisting system of MPs.

Temporal evolution of plastic additive contents over the last decades in two major European rivers (Rhone and Rhine) from sediment cores analyses

Although global plastic distribution is at the heart of 21st century environmental concerns, little information is available concerning how organic plastic additives contaminate freshwater sediments, which are often subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Here, sediment core samples were collected in the Rhone and the Rhine watersheds (France), dated using 137Cs and 210Pbxs methods and analysed for nine phthalates (PAEs) and seven organophosphate esters (OPEs). The distribution of these organic contaminants was used to establish a chronological archive of plastic additive pollution from 1860 (Rhine) and 1930 (Rhone) until today. Sediment grain size and parameters related to organic matter (OM) were also measured as potential factors that may affect the temporal distribution of OPEs and PAEs in sediments. Our results show that OPE and PAE levels increased continuously in Rhone and Rhine sediments since the first records. In both rivers, ∑PAEs levels (from 9.1 ± 1.7 to 487.3 ± 27.0 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) ± standard deviation and from 4.6 ± 1.3 to 65.2 ± 11.2 ng g-1 dw, for the Rhine and the Rhone rivers, respectively) were higher than ∑OPEs levels (from 0.1 ± 0.1 to 79.1 ± 13.7 ng g-1 dw and from 0.6 ± 0.1 to 17.8 ± 2.3 ng g-1 dw, for Rhine and Rhone rivers, respectively). In both rivers, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most abundant PAE, followed by diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), while tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant OPE. No relationship was found between granulometry and additives concentrations, while organic matter helps explain the vertical distribution of PAEs and OPEs in the sediment cores. This study thus establishes a temporal trajectory of PAEs and OPEs contents over the last decades, leading to a better understanding of historical pollution in these two Western European rivers.

Efficient degradation of polystyrene microplastic pollutants in soil by dielectric barrier discharge plasma

In this study, the atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was proposed for the degradation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) for the first time, due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The local temperature in plasma was found to play a crucial role, as it enhanced the degradation reaction induced by ROS when it exceeded the melting temperature of PS-MPs. Factors including applied voltage, air flow rate, and PS-MPs concentration were investigated, and the degradation products were analyzed. High plasma energy and adequate supply of ROS were pivotal in promoting degradation. At 20.1 kV, the degradation efficiency of PS-MPs reached 98.7% after 60 min treatment, with gases (mainly COx, accounting for 96.4%) as the main degradation products. At a concentration of 1 wt%, the PS-MPs exhibited a remarkable conversion rate of 90.6% to COx, showcasing the degradation performance and oxidation degree of this technology. Finally, the degradation mechanism of PS-MPs combined with the detection results of ROS was suggested. This work demonstrates that DBD plasma is a promising strategy for PS-MPs degradation, with high energy efficiency (8.80 mg/kJ) and degradation performance (98.7% within 1 h), providing direct evidence for the rapid and comprehensive treatment of MP pollutants.

Effect of aging on the release of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate from biodegradable and petroleum-based microplastics into soil

Due to microplastics (MPs) being widely distributed in soil, the use of advanced oxidation to remediate organic-contaminated soils may accelerate the aging of MPs in soil and impact the release of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a potential carcinogen used as a plasticizer in plastics, from MPs. In this study, persulfate oxidation (PO) and temperature treatment (TT) were used to treat biodegradable and petroleum-based MPs, including polylactic acid (PLA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polystyrene (PS). The methods used for evaluating the characteristics changes of MP were X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and water contact angle measurement. The effects of aging on DEHP release from MPs were investigated via soil incubation. The results showed PO and TT led to increased surface roughness, oxygen-containing functional group content, and hydrophilicity of the MPs with prolonged aging, consequently accelerating the release of DEHP from the MPs. Interestingly, PLA aged faster than PVC and PS under similar conditions. After 30 days of PO treatment, DEHP release from PLA into the soil increased 0.789-fold, exceeding the increase from PVC (0.454-fold) and PS (0.287-fold). This suggests that aged PLA poses a higher ecological risk than aged PVC or PS. Furthermore, PO treatment resulted in the oxidation and degradation of DEHP on the MP surface. After 30 days of PO treatment, the DEHP content in PLA, PVC, and PS decreased by 19.1%, 25.8%, and 23.5%, respectively. Specifying the types of MPs studied and the environmental conditions would provide a more precise context for the results. These findings provide novel insights into the fate of biodegradable and petroleum-based MPs and the potential ecotoxicity arising from advanced oxidation remediation in contaminated soils.

Insights into the effect of hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter on the sorption of diethyl phthalate onto soil: A pilot mechanism study

Biowaste-derived hydrochar is an emerging close-to-natural product and has shown promise for soil improvement and remediation, but the environmental behavior of the dissolved organic matter released from hydrochar (HDOM) is poorly understood. Focusing on the typical mulch film plasticizer diethyl phthalate (DEP), we investigated the effect of HDOM on the sorption behavior of DEP on soil. The relatively low concentration of HDOM (10 mg L-1, 25 mg L-1) decreases the sorption quantity of DEP on soil, while it increases by a relatively high concentration, 50 mg L-1. The transformation from multilayer to monolayer sorption of DEP on soil occurs as the concentration of HDOM increases. The tryptophan-like substance is the main component of HDOM sorbed to soil, reaching 49.82 %, and results in competition sorption with DEP. The soil pores are blocked by HDOM, which limits the pore filling and mass transfer of DEP, but partitioning is significantly enhanced. The surface functional groups in HDOM are similar to those in soil, and chemical sorption, mainly composed of hydrogen bonding, exists but is not significantly strengthened. We identified the specific impact of HDOM on the sorption of organic pollutants on soil and provide new insights into the understanding of the environmental behavior of hydrochar.

Sorption and desorption of naphthenic acids on reclamation materials: Mechanisms and selectivity of naphthenic acids from oil sands process water

This study investigated the application of materials peat-mineral mix (PT) and Pleistocene fluvial sands from different location (PF-1 and PF-2) obtained from surface mining of oil sands as sorbents of naphthenic acids (NAs) from oil sands process water (OSPW). To understand the sorption properties and mechanisms of NAs in the materials, sorption and desorption studies were performed using decanoic acid (DA) and 5-phenylvaleric acid (PVA). Additionally, the removal efficiency was evaluated using real OSPW to understand the effect of NA structure on sorption. Equilibrium of DA and PVA was reached at 2 days for PT, and 3 and 6 days for PF materials, respectively. Langmuir isotherm best fitted the equilibrium data. Maximum sorption capacities for DA and PVA were, respectively, 16.8 × 10³ and 10⁴ mg/kg for PT, 142.9 and 81.3 mg/kg for PF-1, and 600 and 476.2 mg/kg for PF-2. Hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction were the main sorption mechanisms. Desorption of model compounds from post-sorption materials was not observed for 14 days. The removal of NAs from real OSPW ranged from 20 to 54%. PT is the most promising sorbent of NAs from OSPW because it partially removed NAs with a wide range of molecular weights and structures at very low dosage. Sorption of NAs was affected by the total organic carbon of the materials, emphasizing the hydrophobic interaction as an important sorption mechanism. The results suggest that some mobility of NAs is expected to take place if the reclamation materials come in contact with OSPW, which might occur in an oil sands reclamation landscape.

A systematic review on distribution, sources and sorption of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in soil and their plant uptake

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in environment, which have attracted increasing concerns in recent years. This study collected the data on PFAAs concentrations in 1042 soil samples from 15 countries and comprehensively reviewed the spatial distribution, sources, sorption mechanisms of PFAAs in soil and their plant uptake. PFAAs are widely detected in soils from many countries worldwide and their distribution is related to the emission of the fluorine-containing organic industry. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are found to be the predominant PFAAs in soil. Industrial emission is the main source of PFAAs contributing 49.9% of the total concentrations of PFAAs (Ʃ PFAAs) in soil, followed by activated sludge treated by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) (19.9%) and irrigation of effluents from WWTPs, usage of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFFs) and leaching of leachate from landfill (30.2%). The adsorption of PFAAs by soil is mainly influenced by soil pH, ionic strength, soil organic matter and minerals. The concentrations of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) in soil are negatively correlated with the length of carbon chain, log K_ow, and log K_oc. The carbon chain lengths of PFAAs are negatively correlated with the root-soil concentration factors (RCFs) and shoot-soil concentration factors (SCFs). The uptake of PFAAs by plant is influenced by physicochemical properties of PFAAs, plant physiology and soil environment. Further studies should be conducted to make up the inadequacy of existing knowledge on the behavior and fate of PFAAs in soil-plant system.

The content of PAEs in field soils caused by the residual film has a periodical peak

The wide use of plastic film mulch has led to the release of phthalate esters (PAEs), which seriously threatens the soil environment and the safety of crop production. However, it is unknown whether there is a maximum threshold of soil PAEs accumulation induced by plastic film residue, and the dynamic changes of soil PAEs under field conditions are still unclear. To address these issues, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal fluctuations of soil PAEs content and the response of microbial community structure in the field with plastic film residue. Results showed that the content of soil PAEs fluctuated during an observation period of one year, had a periodical peak in winter and summer, and was exacerbated by the increase in the aging degree and residual amount of plastic films. The PAEs content in soil with black films was higher than the US soil allowable criteria. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the addition of residual film significantly increased the alpha diversity of bacterial communities, changed the structure of bacterial community, and generated significant disturbances in bacterial function. Besides, the residual film recruited more microbiota related to plastic film and PAEs degradation. Results of the present study provide insight into the dynamic variation of soil PAEs caused by plastic film residue in one year, which is important to help evaluate the pollution risk of PAEs on soils and crops caused by residual plastic film.

Genome mining-guided activation of two silenced tandem genes in Raoultella ornithinolytica XF201 for complete biodegradation of phthalate acid esters

Phthalates (PAEs) are ubiquitous in soils and food products and thus pose a high risk to human health. Herein, genome mining revealed a great diversity of bacteria with PAEs-degrading potential. Mining of the genome of Raoultella ornithinolytica XF201, a novel strain isolated from Dongxiang wild rice rhizosphere, revealed the presence of two silenced tandem genes pcdGH (encoding protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase, 3,4-PCD), key aromatic ring-cleaving genes in PAEs biodegradation. Ribosome engineering was successfully utilized to activate the expression of pcdGH genes to produce 3,4-PCD in the mutant XF201-G2U5. The mutant XF201-G2U5 showed high 3,4-PCD activity and could remove 94.5 % of di-n butyl phthalate (DBP) in 72 h. The degradation kinetics obeyed the first-order kinetic model. Strain XF201-G2U5 could also degrade the other PAEs and the main intermediate metabolites, ultimately leading to tricarboxylic acid cycle. Therefore, this strategy facilitates novel bacterial resources discovery for bioremediation of PAEs and other emerging contaminants.

Synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole and dimethyl phthalate by five constructed wetland substrates

Frequent detection and joint toxicity of sulfonamides (SAs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in water environment have caused serious health and safety problems that can be reduced by vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW). However, it remains unclear what kind of substrate used in VFCW can synergistically remove SAs and PAEs. In this study, it was determined if biochar, zeolite, vermiculite, peat and sand synergistically removed sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as representatives of SAs and PAEs by using batch and column experiments. The batch experiments showed that pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion kinetics and Freundlich isotherm could better describe the synergistic adsorption of SMX and DMP on each substrate. SMX promoted hydrophobic interaction between DMP and each substrate so that low concentration DMP almost was adsorbed completely at neutral pH. Both neutral and alkaline pH conditions were favorable for synergistic adsorption of SMX and DMP on each substrate. The column experiments showed that removal of SMX or DMP in VFCW by substrate adsorption alone was limited with run time increasing, but SMX and DMP were effectively removed with run time increasing when loaded with simulated wastewater, SMX and DMP. The VFCW not only removed 94.7% SMX and 91.8% DMP after running 50 d, but also improved total nitrogen removal. In conclusion, these results strongly suggest that biochar, zeolite, vermiculite, peat and sand filled in VFCW can synergistically remove SMX and DMP.

Adaptation of bacterial community in maize rhizosphere for enhancing dissipation of phthalic acid esters in agricultural soil

Rhizospheric degradation is a green and in situ strategy to accelerate dissipation of organic pollutants in soils. However, the mechanism on microbial degradation of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in rhizosphere is still unclear. Here, the bacterial community and function genes in bulk and rhizospheric soils of maize (Zea mays L.) exposed to gradient concentrations of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were analyzed with 16 S rRNA, metagenomic sequencing and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Maize rhizosphere significantly increased the dissipation of DEHP by 4.02-11.5% in comparison with bulk soils. Bacterial community in rhizosphere exhibited more intensive response and shaped its beneficial structure and functions to DEHP stress than that in bulk soils. Both rhizospheric and pollution effects enriched more PAE-degrading bacteria (e.g., Bacillus and Rhizobium) and function genes in rhizosphere than in bulk soil, which played important roles in degradation of PAEs in rhizosphere. The PAE-degrading bacteria (including genera Sphingomonas, Sphingopyxis and Lysobacter) identified as keystone species participated in DEHP biodegradation. Identification of PAE intermediates and metagenomic reconstruction of PAE degradation pathways demonstrated that PAE-degrading bacteria degraded PAEs through cooperation with PAE-degrading and non-PAE-degrading bacteria. This study provides a comprehensive knowledge for the microbial mechanism on the superior dissipation of PAEs in rhizosphere.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Investigation of the Adsorption and Desorption of Trimethoprim and Its Main Metabolites in Mediterranean Crop Soils

The adsorption-desorption processes of organic pollutants into the soil are one of the main factors influencing their potential environmental risks and distribution in the environment. In the present work, the adsorption-desorption behavior of an antibiotic, trimethoprim (TMP), and two of its main metabolites, 3-desmethyltrimethoprim (DM-TMP) and 4-hydroxytrimethoprim (OH-TMP), were assessed in three Mediterranean agricultural soils with different physicochemical characteristics. Results showed that the adsorption kinetic is performed in two steps: external sorption and intraparticle diffusion. The adsorptions of the studied compounds in soils were similar and fitted to the three models but were better fitted to a linear model. In the case of DM-TMP and OH-TMP, their adsorptions were positively correlated with the soil organic matter. In addition, desorption was higher in less organic matter soil (from 1.3 to 30.9%). Furthermore, the desorptions measured for the TMP metabolites were lower than those measured in the case of TMP (from 2.0 and 4.0% for OH-TMP and DM-TMP, respectively, to 9.0% for TMP).

Facet effect of hematite on the hydrolysis of phthalate esters under ambient humidity conditions

Phthalate esters (PAEs) have been extensively used as additives in plastics and wallcovering, causing severe environmental contamination and increasing public health concerns. Here, we find that hematite nanoparticles with specific facet-control can efficiently catalyze PAEs hydrolysis under ambient humidity conditions, with the hydrolysis rates 2 orders of magnitude higher than that in water saturated condition. The catalytic performance of hematite shows a significant facet-dependence with the reactivity in the order {012} > {104} ≫ {001}, related to the atomic array of surface undercoordinated Fe. The {012} and {104} facets with the proper neighboring Fe-Fe distance of 0.34-0.39 nm can bidentately coordinate with PAEs, and thus induce much stronger Lewis-acid catalysis. Our study may inspire the development of nanomaterials with appropriate surface atomic arrays, improves our understanding for the natural transformation of PAEs under low humidity environment, and provides a promising approach to remediate/purify the ambient air contaminated by PAEs.

Occurrence and health risk assessment of phthalate esters in tobacco and soils in tobacco-producing areas of Guizhou province, southwest China

Flue-cured tobacco is one of the important sources of national economy in China. However, Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the cultivation and growth management of flue-cured tobacco, and attracting more and more attention. Here, six priority PAEs were detected in tobacco and soils and their residue characteristics, pollution sources were analyzed, and their exposure risks to the health of farmers were assessed. The concentration of six total PAEs ranged from 0.78 to 4.79 mg/kg in tobacco with the average of 1.75 mg/kg, and 0.84-25.68 mg/kg in soils with the average of 5.40 mg/kg. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) had the highest detection frequency (DF = 100%) both in soil and tobacco samples. DEHP was the most abundant of the total PAEs in soil and tobacco samples, with the mean contribution values of 71.0% and 58.8%, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicates that the major sources of PAEs in the tobacco-soil system were plastic films, fertilizers and pesticides. Health risk assessment suggests that the non-cancer hazard indexes (NCHI) of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), DBP and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) in all samples for farmers were at acceptable levels (NCHI < 1), and the average carcinogenic hazard indexes (CHI) of butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and DEHP for farmers were 3.79 × 10-13 and 8.54 × 10-11 in soils, respectively, 8.23 × 10-13 and 1.95 × 10-11 in tobacco, respectively, which were considered to be very low level (CHI < 10-6). This study provides data on PAEs in tobacco and soils and their health risks which may provide valuable information to aid the management of tobacco cultivation and risk avoidance.

Adsorption-desorption and transport behavior of pydiflumetofen in eight different types of soil

Pydiflumetofen, a fungicide of the class of succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors, can disrupt energy metabolism by inhibiting the synthesis of succinate dehydrogenase, thus effectively inhibiting pathogenic fungal growth and related yield losses.We studied the adsorption and desorption behaviors and interaction mechanisms of pydiflumetofen in eight different arable soils by the infrared spectroscopy and batch equilibrium method. Pydiflumetofen adsorption and desorption property of soils conformed with the Freundlich isotherm model and the values for the adsorption capacity KF-ads were in the range of 14.592-102.610. The adsorption constants (KF-ads) exhibited a significantly positive and linear correlation (p < 0.1) with soil organic matter and organic carbon content. Both high and low temperatures weakened the pydiflumetofen sorption capacity of the soil. In addition, the initial pH of the solution, its ionic strength, and the addition of exogenous biochar, humic acid, and different types of surfactants at different concentrations also affected the sorption property of the soil. Pydiflumetofen is weakly mobile and leachable in most soils, and, poses some threat to surface soil and water organisms, but does not contaminate groundwater.

Environmental fate of dibutylphthalate in agricultural plastics: Photodegradation, migration and ecotoxicological impact on soil

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were determined in polyethylene covers used in horticultural production units located at Moreno and La Plata districts (Buenos Aires, Argentina), detecting 0.69-8.75 mg PAEs kg^-1 plastic in greenhouse and tunnel films. The PAEs found were diisobutylphthalate (DIBP), dibutylphthalate (DBP) and diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP). DBP was chosen as a model molecule to carry out the photochemical degradation studies that led to the formation of monobutylphthalate (MBP) and phthalic acid (PA). DBP, MBP and PA migration from plastic covers was studied, finding that while DBP and MBP moved to soil and atmosphere in short times (<48 h), PA remained in the agricultural covers. Further experiments with DBP were made to explore the effect on migration of temperature (20 °C, 50 °C), film thickness (25 μm, 100 μm) and plastic ageing by solarization, observing that temperature increase, film thickness reduction and ageing by solarization favored DBP migration to the environment. DBP and MBP impact on soil were evaluated by avoidance and reproduction tests using Eisenia andrei as bioindicator. Both compounds reduced cocoon viability decreasing the number of juveniles at the lowest concentration assayed (0.1 mg kg^-1 of soil). At higher DBP and MBP concentrations the reproductive parameters (number of total cocoons, hatchability and number of juveniles) also showed alterations compared with the controls. Carboxylesterases (CaE), cholinesterases (ChE) and glutathion-S-transferases (GST) activities were analyzed in E. andrei exposed to DBP; cholinesterases activities were reduced at 1 and 10 mg DBP kg^-1 soil, and glutathione S-transferases activities were increased at 10 mg DBP kg^-1 soil while no effect was observed on carboxylesterases activities. These results emphasize the need to continue studying the impact of PAEs and their photodegradation products on the environment.

Particle-size-based elution of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil by surfactant mixture

Surfactants are often used to elute the contaminants from soils in order to remediate the polluted soils. However, the heterogeneity of minerals and organic matters with soil particle size may result in adsorption and precipitation of surfactants and affect the distribution of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). In this work, spiked soil samples and surfactant mixture consisting of Tween 80 (TW80) and sodium dodecyl sulfate were prepared. Results showed that the silt-clay-mixture held the high retention capacity of PHCs, and 30% total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) was retained in the soil fraction of '<125 μm' (high concentration), while 70% TPHs (low concentration) was retained in the soil fraction of '>125 μm'. TW80 was highly adsorbed on the montmorillonite and aluminosilicates of the soil, and the adsorption of TW80 in surfactant mixture could be relieved at mass ratio of 1:1. This study provides a novel strategy in the elution removal of PHCs from the contaminated soils, in which with the separation of soil particles by the size of 125 μm before elution, as high as 80% PHCs could be eluted from the soil by surfactant mixture.

Competitive adsorption of Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) onto fresh and oxidized corncob biochar

Phthalates (PAEs) often exist simultaneously in contaminated soil and wastewater systems, and their adsorption to biochar might impact their behavior in the environment. So far, the competitive adsorption of PAEs to biochar has not been reported. In this study, the competitive adsorption of Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on corncob biochar (fresh and oxidized) was investigated, and experiments of kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were conducted. Langmuir and Freundlich models, pseudo-first-order and second-order kinetic models were used to simulate the experimental data. In the mono PAEs component systems, the biochar showed significantly greater adsorption capacity for DEHP (11.8-16.16 mg g^-1) than for DBP (9.86-13.2 mg g^-1). The oxidized biochar has higher adsorption capacities than the fresh one. Moreover, a fast adsorption rate for DBP was observed, which can be attributed to the smaller size and shorter carbon chains in the DBP molecule, resulting in faster diffusion into the biochar pores. In the binary PAEs component systems, competition between DEHP and DBP in their adsorption to the biochars was observed, and DEHP (11.7-15.0 mg g^-1) was preferred over DBP (3.4-7.9 mg g^-1). The stronger adsorption of DEHP can be explained by stronger hydrophobic interaction with biochar. Compared to DBP, DEHP has a high octanol-water partition coefficient (logK_ow) and low water solubility. The positive entropy (ΔS⁰) and enthalpy(ΔH⁰) values for the adsorption of both DEHP and DBP further indicated that hydrophobic interaction played an important role, even though H-bonds and π-π interactions could also be involved.

The role of crystallinity and particle morphology on the sorption of dibutyl phthalate on polyethylene microplastics: Implications for the behavior of phthalate plastic additives

The sorption behavior of phthalate additives in plastic and microplastic litter is an important process controlling the exposure, net health risk and ecotoxicity of these co-occurring pollutants. Plastic crystallinity and particle morphology are hypothesized to be important variables for microplastics sorption behavior, but to date there have been few direct studies to explicitly test for the influence of these parameters. To address this, in this study we explored the sorption of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as a probe molecule to diverse polyethylene microplastics including irregularly-shaped pure polyethylene microplastics (IPPM), black plastic film microplastics (BPFM), white plastic film microplastics (WPFM), and commercial microspheres (CM), which had crystallinities ranging from 17 to 99%. Sorption kinetics for all materials could be well represented with both a pseudo-first-order (R² = 0.87-0.93) and pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.87-0.93). Further, sorption was highly linear in the concentration range of 0.5-10 mg L^-1, with no greater performance from a linear sorption model (R² = 0.96-0.99) than the non-linear Freundlich or Temkin sorption models. The partition coefficient (K_d) of DBP sorption onto IPPM, BPFM, WPFM and CMs were 1974.55 L kg^-1, 1483.85 L kg^-1, 1477.45 L kg^-1 and 509.37 L kg^-1, respectively, showing a significant decrease with increasing crystallinity (r² = 0.98). The particle size of microplastics (27-1000 μm) is, however, an indecisive factor affecting their sorption behavior for DBP in this study. This study provides new insight that crystallinity plays a governing role on the sorption of phthalate from microplastic. This should be considered in future exposure studies and assessments of phthalates from plastics and microplastics.

Rapid recognition of di-n-butyl phthalate in food samples with a near infrared fluorescence imprinted sensor based on zeolite imidazolate framework-67

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) as a plasticizer is widely used in food and chemical industries. It is harm to human health when it appeared in food and water. A novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence molecularly imprinted sensor based on CdTe quantum dots and zeolite imidazolate framework-67 was developed with a sol-gel polymerization method for rapid and sensitive determination of DBP in foodstuff rapidly (only in 1.5 min). The fluorescence imprinted sensor provided a rapid detection method for DBP in the linear response concentration range of 0.05-18.0 μM with a low detection limit of 1.6 nM. Compared with previous fluorescence imprinted sensor, it behaved faster response speed and lower detection limit for determination of DBP. The fluorescence imprinted sensor was used to detect DBP in real samples successfully with satisfied recoveries of 97.2-106.4%, suggesting a potential application in food analysis.

Dissipation and sorption-desorption of benzisothiazolinone in agricultural soils and identification of its metabolites

Benzisothiazolinone has been widely used to control bacterial and fungal diseases in various agricultural crops by destroying the nuclear structure and interfering with the metabolism of microbial cells. In this study, the dissipation, transformation and sorption-desorption of benzisothiazolinone (BIT) in five soils were investigated to evaluate its environmental fate. Results showed that the degradation of BIT in all the tested soils fitted the first order kinetics and increased with soil organic matter (OM) content. Degradation differences between unsterilized natural and sterilized soils (t 1/2 = 0.09-26.66 and 6.80-86.64 d) suggested that BIT degradation is primarily driven by biological processes and assisted by abiotic degradation. Additionally, BIT dissipated fastest in flooded soils (t 1/2 = 0.20-4.53 d), indicating that anaerobic microorganisms are more likely to degrade BIT compared to aerobic microbes. Also, during the soil degradation process, two metabolites were monitored and identified for the first time. BIT sorption was a spontaneous physical process with no desorption hysteresis effect, which fit the Freundlich model. BIT causes relatively strong sorption (log K OC = 3.76-4.19) and low persistence in soils, thus exhibiting a low potential risk for groundwater contamination.

Effects of tall fescue biochar on the adsorption and desorption of atrazine in different types of soil

The excessive application of atrazine in agriculture has resulted in serious environmental contamination. The addition of biochar could reduce the bioavailability and mobility of atrazine in soil through adsorption-desorption processes. In this study, tall fescue biochar was prepared at 500 °C, and its effect on the adsorption-desorption behavior of atrazine in red soil, brown soil, and black soil was investigated. The tall fescue biochar with the pH value of 9.64 had a developed porous structure and large specific area that contained abundant surface functional groups. The element composition of the tall fescue biochar was C (50.46%), O (15.01%), N (4.54%), H (2.56%), and S (1.47%). The adsorption process of atrazine in the three soil types with and without biochar addition was divided into a fast stage, slow stage, and equilibrium stage. A pseudo second-order kinetic model was suitable for fitting the adsorption process of atrazine, and the determination coefficient (R²) ranged from 0.985 to 0.999. The adsorption-desorption processes of atrazine were described accurately by the Freundlich model (R² of 0.967-0.999). The adsorption capacity of the three soil types for atrazine increased significantly with the addition of biochar, whereby the equilibrium adsorption amount increased from an initial range of 3.968 to 5.902 μg g^-1 to a final range of 21.397 to 21.968 μg g^-1. The desorption of atrazine was also inhibited as the hysteresis coefficient (HI) increased from an initial range of 0.451 to 0.586 to a final range of 0.916 to 0.941. The adsorption capacity of the red soil improved more than did the brown soil or black soil. Moreover, spontaneous adsorption of atrazine by the biochar-soil system occurred more easily at 35 °C than at 15 °C and 25 °C. Overall, tall fescue biochar was a prospective soil amendment material.

Dynamics, thermodynamics, and mechanism of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) sorption to various soil particle-size fractions of paddy soil

Soil is an important sink for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) that is a typical persistent organic pollutant with high toxicity. Understanding of PFOS sorption to various particle-size fractions of soil provides an insight into the mobility and bioavailability of PFOS in soil. This study evaluated kinetics, isotherms, and mechanisms of PFOS sorption to six soil particle-size fractions of paddy soil at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.01-1 μg/mL). The used soil particle-size fractions included coarse sand (120.4-724.4 mm), fine sand (45.7-316.2 mm), coarse silt (17.3-79.4 mm), fine silt (1.9-39.8 mm), clay (0.5-4.4 mm), and humic acid fractions (8.2-83.7 mm) labeled as F1~F6, respectively. PFOS sorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics related to film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion, with speed-limiting phase acted by the latter. PFOS sorption isotherm data followed Freundlich model, with generally convex isotherms in larger size fractions (F1~F3) but concave isotherms in smaller size fractions (F4 and F5) and humic acid fraction (F6). Increasing organic matter content, Brunner-Emmet-Teller surface area, and smaller size fractions were conducive to PFOS sorption. Hydrophobic force, divalent metal ion-bridging effect, ligand exchange, hydrogen bonding, and protein-like interaction played roles in PFOS sorption. But hydrophobic force controlled the PFOS sorption, because its relevant organic matter governed the contribution of the soil fractions to the overall PFOS sorption. The larger size fractions dominated the PFOS sorption to the original soil because of their high mass percentages (~80%). This likely caused greater potential risks of PFOS migration into groundwater and bioaccumulation in crops at higher temperatures and c_e values, based on their convex isotherms with an exothermic physical process.

Influence of microplastics occurrence on the adsorption of 17β-estradiol in soil

High levels of steroid estrogens are continuously detected in the soil environment, and even the concentration in vegetables and fruits has reached levels that have an impact on children's health, which has attracted growing attention. Moreover, microplastics (MPs) in the soil system are also of increasing concern worldwide. The effects of MPs on the adsorption of organic pollutants in soil systems, however, remain largely unexplored. In this study, MPs common in greenhouse vegetable soil (polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene) were selected to investigate the effect of MPs occurrence on the adsorption of 17β‑estradiol (E2) in soil under various conditions. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of MPs to E2 is stronger than that of soil. Moreover, the occurrence of MPs in soil increased the adsorption capacity for E2, and the addition amount and aging of MPs enhanced the promotion effect. This enhancement indicated that the input of MPs into soil might reduce the mobility of E2 by improving the adsorption capacity of the soil. These results deepen the understanding of the adsorption behavior of E2 in the coexisting system of MPs and soil and provide a theoretical basis for E2 pollution control.

Volatile compounds sorption during the aging of Chinese Liquor (Baijiu) using Pottery Powder

Pottery jar is the preferred storage vessel for aging baijiu, Chinese liquor, and it could sorb liquor micro-compounds. The objective of this work was to identify the sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder, and gained insights regarding the sorption processes and mechanism. The sorption of liquor micro-compounds onto pottery powder of different sizes was studied using different kinetic models. The results showed that the sorption capacity varied among particle size of pottery powder, which also affected equilibrium time. The sorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the external diffusion was the rate-limiting step. Liquor volatiles in pottery powder at equilibrium were characterized, which detected alcohols, esters, acids, and furan by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These findings demonstrated pottery could not only cause subtractive changes that occur to liquor during the aging period, but also as a vector for transferring aromas sorbed when reused.

Prevalent phthalates in air-soil-vegetable systems of plastic greenhouses in a subtropical city and health risk assessments

Wide use of plastic greenhouses for vegetable production increases human exposure to phthalate (PAEs) through vegetable intake. However, little information is available about distribution of PAEs in air-soil-vegetable systems of plastic greenhouses and PAE estrogenic effects. This study was designed to investigate PAE distributions and corresponding health risk in plastic greenhouses in Guangzhou, a subtropical city in South China. PAEs were prevalent in plastic greenhouses, with sum concentrations of 16 PAE compounds (∑16PAEs) up to 5.76 mg/kg in soils, 5.27 mg/kg in vegetables and 4393 ng/m³ in air. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-isobutyl phthalate, and dibutyl phthalate were predominant compounds. Average concentrations and bioconcentration factor of ∑16PAEs and the predominant PAE compounds in vegetables of greenhouses were higher than those of open fields. Plastic greenhouses exhibited significantly higher air PAE levels than those of open fields due to higher indoor temperature, which enhanced PAE accumulation by vegetables. Both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of PAEs via dietary and non-dietary exposures for farmers decreased with an order of vegetable > air > soil. Consumption of vegetables from greenhouses resulted in significantly higher estrogenic effects compared to those from open field cultivation. This study emphasizes highly potential health risks of PAEs in air-soil-vegetable systems of plastic greenhouses.

Isotherms, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics of NH4+ Adsorption in Raw Liquid Manure by Using Natural Chabazite Zeolite-Rich Tuff

The search for safer and sustainable management of animal manure is a global and topical challenge, in particular for the reduction of nitrogen (N) content. The use of natural adsorbents as zeolite-rich tuffs is recognized as a valid method to recover N, in the form of ammonium (NH4+), from animal manure. While the scientific literature is rich in studies performed on synthetic solutions and using clinoptilolite zeolites as adsorbent, it lacks information concerning adsorption in real liquid manure and using other types of zeolite-rich tuffs (e.g., chabazite). This work aims at exploring the NH4+ adsorption process from raw liquid swine manure, using a chabazite-rich zeolite tuff as adsorbent. The effects of temperature, contact time, and grain size have been assessed. Isotherms, kinetic models, and thermodynamic parameters have been investigated. Harkins-Jura isotherm correlates well with the observed data, in accordance with the formation of an adsorption multilayer. Kinetic data have been explained by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order models. In conclusion, the natural chabazite tuff has proven to be a valid material for NH4+ adsorption from raw liquid swine manure. In particular, to reach the highest adsorption capacities and adsorption rates, it is recommended to use it at a fine particle size and with dosages < 6 %.

Adsorption, mobility, biotic and abiotic metabolism and degradation of pesticide exianliumi in three types of farmland

Exianliumi is a newly developed pesticide for controlling diseases caused by microbes or meloidogynes during plant vegetable and reproductive stages. To date, little is known about the environmental behavior and fate of its residues in soil. To explore its potential environmental risks to crop production and food safety, three typical Chinese agricultural soils were examined by analyzing adsorption, mobility leaching, and degraded metabolites of exianliumi in soils. Exianliumi inclined to bind more to Heilongjiang soil (HLJS), followed by Nanjing soil (NJS) and Jiangxi soil (JXS). Soil thin-layer chromatography and column leaching tests showed a weak migration in HLJS and strong mobility in JXS. Under the same condition, exianliumi rapidly decayed in NJS, followed by HLJS and JXS. The differential degradative capacity for exianliumi in the soils was related to chemical, physical and biological interactions basically through organic matter content, temperature, soil moisture and microorganisms. The half-normal, normal and pareto effect plots demonstrated that temperature, microorganisms and soil moisture dominantly influenced the degradation of exianliumi. We further characterized metabolites of exianliumi catabolized in NJS using High Resolution Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometer/Mass Spectrometer (HRLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). Eight degradation products and three conjugates of exianliumi were detected and the possible degradative pathways were highlighted. This is the first report about exianliumi degradation in soils with multi-pathways, which provides the basic data for environmental risk assessment of crop production and food security.

Rice root exudates enhance desorption and bioavailability of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in soil associating with cultivar variation in PAE accumulation

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) is a class of prevalent pollutants in agricultural soil, threating food safety through crop uptake and accumulation of PAEs. Accumulation of PAEs varies largely among crop species and cultivars. Nevertheless, how root exudates affect PAE bioavailability, dissipation, uptake and accumulation is still not well understood. In the present study, desorption and pot experiments were designed to investigate how root exudates from high-(Peizataifeng) and low-(Fengyousimiao) PAE accumulating rice cultivars affect soil PAE bioavailability, dissipation, and accumulation variation. Rice root exudates including low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) of Peizataifeng and Fengyousimiao could enhance desorption of two typical PAE compounds, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), from aged soil to their available fractions by increasing soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC), thus improving their bioavailability in soil. Peizataifeng produced twice higher amounts of oxalic acid, critic acid and malonic acid in root exudates, and exhibited stronger effects on enhancing desorption and bioavailability of DBP and DEHP than Fengyousimiao. Higher (by about 50%) total organic carbon contents of root exudates from Peizataifeng led to higher (by 10-30%) soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen than Fengyousimiao, and thus promoted more PAE dissipation from soil than Fengyousimiao. Nevertheless, higher (by 20-50%) soil DOC and significantly higher PAE bioavailability in the soils planted Peizataifeng resulted in greater (by 53-93%) PAE accumulation in roots and shoots of Peizataifeng than Fengyousimiao, confirming by higher (by 1.82-3.48 folds) shoot and root bioconcentration factors of Peizataifeng than Fengyousimiao. Sorption and desorption of seven steroidal synthetic progestins in five agricultural soil-water systems

Manure fertilization and wastewater irrigation can introduce the biologically potent synthetic progestins into agricultural soils, causing endocrine disruption in organisms of nearby surface waters. Therefore, this study investigated the sorption and desorption potential of etonogestrel, medroxyprogesterone, gestodene, norgestrel, cyproterone acetate, levonorgestrel, and dienogest in five agricultural soil-water systems. Sorption data were well-described by the linear sorption model. In most batch systems, cyproterone acetate exhibited the highest affinities for soils, followed by etonogestrel, medroxyprogesterone, levonorgestrel, gestodene, norgestrel, and dienogest. The sorption magnitudes (logK_oc or logK_d) were significantly correlated with the progestin hydrophobicities (R² = 0.72-0.86, p < 0.05). The K_d values of the progestins were also significantly correlated with organic carbon content and pore volumes of the soils (R² = 0.68-0.98, p < 0.05). In addition, 0.5 M urea resulted in 3-19% decreases in K_d values of the progestins. Taken together, these data indicated that hydrophobic partitioning interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction, and pore filling were the sorption mechanisms for the progestins in soil-water systems. No significant desorption hysteresis was observed for the progestins, indicating that they can be readily desorbed under rainfall or irrigation events. Based on the sorption and desorption data, we estimated the dynamic transport of the progestins in conventional agricultural management systems, and predicted the concentrations of the progestins as a function of soil-sorbed concentration, water-soil ratio, and dilution factor of receiving waters. This study will improve the understanding of the risks posed by the progestins under field-scale hydrological conditions.

Identification and characterization of a novel phthalate-degrading hydrolase from a soil metagenomic library

Phthalate esters have raised public concerns owing to their effects on the environment and human health. We identified a novel phthalate-degrading hydrolase, EstJ6, from a metagenomic library using function-driven screening. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that EstJ6 is a member of family IV esterases. EstJ6 hydrolyzed various dialkyl and monoalkyl phthalate esters, and exhibited high hydrolytic activity (128 U/mg) toward dibutyl phthalate at 40 °C and pH 7.5. EstJ6 hydrolyzed not only common phthalate esters with simple side chains but also diethylhexyl phthalate and monoethylhexyl phthalate, which have complex and long side chains. Site-directed mutagenesis indicated that the catalytic triad residues of EstJ6 consists of Ser146, Glu240, and His270. EstJ6 is therefore a promising biodegradation enzyme, and our study illustrates the advantages of a metagenomic approach in identifying enzyme-coding genes for agricultural, food, and biotechnological applications.

Effects of rice straw biochar on sorption and desorption of di-n-butyl phthalate in different soil particle-size fractions

Sorption of organic contaminants by biochar greatly affects their bioavailability and fate in soils. Nevertheless, very little information is available regarding the effects of biochar on sorption and desorption of organic contaminants in different soil particle-size fractions. In this study, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), a prevalent organic contaminant in agricultural soils, was taken as a model contaminant. The effects of biochar on DBP sorption and desorption in six particle-size fractions (i.e., coarse sand, fine sand, coarse silt, fine silt, clay, and humic acid fractions) of paddy soil were investigated using batch sorption-desorption experiments. A straw-derived biochar with high specific surface area (116 m²/g) and high content of organic matter (OM) rich in aromatic carbon (67%) was prepared. Addition of this biochar (1% and 5%) significantly promoted the sorption and retention of DBP in all the paddy soil particle-size fractions at environmentally relevant DBP concentrations (2-12 mg/L) with 1.2-132-fold increase of the K_d values. With increasing addition rates of biochar, DBP retention by the biochar enhanced. The biochar's effectiveness was remarkably influenced by the physicochemical properties of the soil particle-size fractions, especially, the OM contents and pore size showed the most striking effects. A parameter (r_kd) reflecting the biochar's effectiveness showed negative and positive correlations with OM contents and pore size of the soil particle-size fractions, respectively. Accordingly, strong effect of the biochar was found in the soil fractions with low OM contents and high pore size. The findings of this study gave insight into the effects and influencing factors of biochar on sorption and desorption of organic contaminants in soils at scale of various particle-size factions.

Adsorption isotherms, degradation kinetics, and leaching behaviors of cyanogen and hydrogen cyanide in eight texturally different agricultural soils from China

Cyanogen (C₂N₂) is a new and effective alternative soil fumigant to methyl bromide. The effects of soil properties on the fate of C₂N₂ and its degradation products, including hydrogen cyanide (HCN), are not fully understood. The objectives of this study were to determine the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and degradation kinetics of C₂N₂ and HCN in texturally different soils and evaluate their leaching potentials using soil columns. Eight agricultural soils were collected throughout China: Luvisols (Hebei Province), Phaeozems (Heilongjiang Province), Gleysols (Sichuan Province), Anthrosols (Zhejiang Province), Ferralsols (Jiangxi Province), Lixisols (Hubei Province), Alisols (Shandong Province), and Plinthosols (Hainan Province). The adsorptions of C₂N₂ and HCN in C₂N₂-fumigated soils were positively correlated with organic matter and clay contents. For a C₂N₂ dose of 100 mg kg^-1, the adsorptions of C₂N₂ and HCN were highest in Phaeozems and lowest in Gleysols according to their adsorption coefficients (15.744 and 3.119, respectively). No significant difference in the half-life of C₂N₂ and HCN was observed between sterilized and unsterilized soils, indicating that abiotic degradation was predominant in the degradation of C₂N₂ and HCN. After leaching, the residual C₂N₂, HCN, NH₄⁺-N, and NO₃^--N concentrations in C₂N₂-fumigated Phaeozems were highest within 15 cm of the soil surface (30, 20, 19.68, and 10.41 mg kg^-1 soil, respectively). The results indicate that C₂N₂ and HCN have short lifetimes and low leaching potentials in agricultural soils, even under heavy rainfall conditions. The findings demonstrate that C₂N₂ and HCN resulting from fumigation will not accumulate in the soil and are not likely to contaminate groundwater.
