Metal-free, Mild, and Selective Synthesis of Bis(pyrazolyl)alkanes by Nucleophile-Catalyzed Condensation

Insights into non-covalent interactions in dicopper(II,II) complexes bearing a naphthyridine scaffold: anion-dictated electrochemistry

A family of bis(μ-hydroxido)dicopper(II,II) complexes bearing a naphthyridine-based scaffold has been synthesized and characterized. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the nature of the anions present in the complexes plays a pivotal role in their electrochemical properties. X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis data support the formation of intimate ion pairs by non-covalent interactions driving to a ca. 270 mV difference for the potential required to monooxidize the CuIICuII species.

Atactic, Isotactic, and Syndiotactic Methylated Polyhydroxybutyrates: An Unexpected Series of Isomorphic Polymers

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), such as poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrates] [(R)-P3HB], are produced by bacteria and are promising alternatives to nondegradable polyolefin plastics, but their semicrystallinity and high melting points are only maintained at high tacticity, which are commonly seen in other semicrystalline polymers like isotactic polypropylene (iPP). We herein report a class of synthetic PHAs, cis-poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate)s (cis-PHMBs), that exhibit tacticity-independent semicrystallinity. The syndiotactic, isotactic, and even atactic PHMBs all share high melting points (Tm > 170 °C) and nearly identical crystal structures. The isomorphism of these polymers across three different tacticities has allowed access to iPP-like, high-performance PHMB without the requirement of high tacticity.

Bimetallic polymerization of lactide with binaphthol-derived bis-heteroscorpionate dizinc and dimagnesium complexes

Discrete bimetallic catalysts often provide enhanced reactivity and selectivity in lactone polymerization, making metal-metal cooperativity an important design principle for new catalyst development. However, the poor modularity of binucleating ligands limits structure-reactivity analysis and optimization. This report describes a modular, binucleating bis(pyrazolyl)alkane ligand series (1-R) bridged by a chiral binaphthol unit, prepared by nucleophile-catalyzed condensation between a dialdehyde and a bis(pyrazolyl)methanone. A bis(ethylzinc) complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, but in situ complexation with Zn(HMDS)₂ and Mg(HMDS)₂ provided more active catalysts for lactide polymerization (HMDS^- = hexamethyldisilazide). Structure-reactivity studies identified complexes of 1-Me₂ as the most active, and these catalysts show significant enhancements in rate compared to their monometallic analogues. Kinetic analysis resulted in first-order dependence on both mono- and bimetallic catalysts, suggesting metal-metal cooperativity as the basis for this rate enhancement. End-group analysis and low dispersity implicate a coordination-insertion mechanism through an alkoxide. Despite rapid transesterification observed by MALDI, we still demonstrated controlled polymerization in the block copolymerization of ε-caprolactone and L-lactide. Although we observed rate differences in the polymerization of L-lactide by opposite enantiomer catalysts, we did not observe catalyst-directed stereoselectivity in the polymerization of rac- or meso-lactide.
