Ion Association in Hydrothermal Sodium Sulfate Solutions Studied by Modulated FT-IR-Raman Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics

Investigation of ion association kinetics in Na2SO4-H2O by excess Raman spectroscopy and 2D correlation Raman spectroscopy

The ion association of salts aqueous solutions have long captivated the attention of researchers within the field of physical chemistry. In this paper, we have performed a comprehensive analysis of ion interactions in sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) aqueous solutions using a combination of high-resolution techniques, including excess (ERS) and two-dimensional correlation (2DCRS) Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. The Raman spectrum shows that two inflection points in the Raman shift of the O-H vibration are observed with the increase in Na2SO4 concentration. Simultaneously, a new peak of the SO42- vibration appears at first inflection point, representing the formation of ion association. Further analysis based on ERS and 2CRS reveals that these two inflection points correspond respectively to the formation of ion pairs (CIPs) and small ion clusters. Importantly, MD simulations confirm the above experimental results. Our study provides evidence for ion association and clustering in aqueous in salt ion aqueous solutions.

Theoretical and practical investigation of ion-ion association in electrolyte solutions

In this study, we present a new equation of state for electrolyte solutions, integrating the statistical associating fluid theory for variable range interactions utilizing the generic Mie form and binding Debye-Hückel theories. This equation of state underscores the pivotal role of ion-ion association in determining the properties of electrolyte solutions. We propose a unified framework that simultaneously examines the thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solutions and their electrical conductivity, given the profound impact of ion pairing on this transport property. Using this equation of state, we predict the liquid density, mean ionic activity coefficient, and osmotic coefficient for binary NaCl, Na2SO4, and MgSO4 aqueous solutions at 298.15 K. Additionally, we evaluate the molar conductivity of these systems by considering the fraction of free ions derived from our equation of state in conjunction with two advanced electrical conductivity models. Our results reveal that, while ion-ion association has a minimal influence on the modification of the predicted properties of sodium chloride solutions, their impact on sodium and magnesium sulfate solutions is considerably more noticeable.

Speciation and Structural Properties of Hydrothermal Solutions of Sodium and Potassium Sulfate Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Aqueous solutions of salts at elevated pressures and temperatures play a key role in geochemical processes and in applications of supercritical water in waste and biomass treatment, for which salt management is crucial for performance. A major question in predicting salt behavior in such processes is how different salts affect the phase equilibria. Herein, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to investigate molecular-scale structures of solutions of sodium and/or potassium sulfate, which show contrasting macroscopic behavior. Solutions of Na-SO4 exhibit a tendency towards forming large ionic clusters with increasing temperature, whereas solutions of K-SO4 show significantly less clustering under equivalent conditions. In mixed systems (Nax K2-x SO4 ), cluster formation is dramatically reduced with decreasing Na/(K+Na) ratio; this indicates a structure-breaking role of K. MD results allow these phenomena to be related to the characteristics of electrostatic interactions between K(+) and SO4 (2-) , compared with the analogous Na(+) -SO4 (2-) interactions. The results suggest a mechanism underlying the experimentally observed increasing solubility in ternary mixtures of solutions of Na-K-SO4 . Specifically, the propensity of sodium to associate with sulfate, versus that of potassium to break up the sodium-sulfate clusters, may affect the contrasting behavior of these salts. Thus, mutual salting-in in ternary hydrothermal solutions of Na-K-SO4 reflects the opposing, but complementary, natures of Na-SO4 versus K-SO4 interactions. The results also provide clues towards the reported liquid immiscibility in this ternary system.

We report infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra of cryogenically-cooled (NaSO₄⁻)₂(H₂O)_n dianions (n = 0–6, 8) in the fingerprint spectral region, which provide evidence for a remarkable stability of the quaternary ion complex upon microhydration.

Hydrothermal properties of the COS/D2 water model: a polarizable charge-on-spring water model, at elevated temperatures and pressures

Molecular simulations have been conducted to assess the pVT properties and static permittivity of the charge-on-spring polarizable water model COS/D2 at hydrothermal conditions from 300 to 450 °C and bulk densities of 0.001 to 1.0 g cm⁻³.
