Disentangling Electron-Phonon Coupling and Thermal Expansion Effects in the Band Gap Renormalization of Perovskite Nanocrystals

Effect of Connectivity on the Carrier Transport and Recombination Dynamics of Perovskite Quantum-Dot Networks

Quantum-dot (QD) solids are being widely exploited as a solution-processable technology to develop photovoltaic, light-emission, and photodetection devices. Charge transport in these materials is the result of a compromise between confinement at the individual QD level and electronic coupling among the different nanocrystals in the ensemble. While this is commonly achieved by ligand engineering in colloidal-based systems, ligand-free QD assemblies have recently emerged as an exciting alternative where nanostructures can be directly grown into porous matrices with optical quality as well as control over their connectivity and, hence, charge transport properties. In this context, we present a complete photophysical study comprising fluence- and temperature-dependent time-resolved spectroscopy to study carrier dynamics in ligand-free QD networks with gradually varying degrees of interconnectivity, which we achieve by changing the average distance between the QDs. Analysis of the photoluminescence and absorption properties of the QD assemblies, involving both static and time-resolved measurements, allows us to identify the weight of the different recombination mechanisms, both radiative and nonradiative, as a function of QD connectivity. We propose a picture where carrier diffusion, which is needed for any optoelectronic application and implies interparticle transport, gives rise to the exposure of carriers to a larger defect landscape than in the case of isolated QDs. The use of a broad range of fluences permits extracting valuable information for applications demanding either low- or high-carrier-injection levels and highlighting the relevance of a judicious design to balance recombination and diffusion.

Ultrapure Green High Photoluminescence Quantum Yield from FAPbBr3 Nanocrystals Embedded in Transparent Porous Films

Achieving highly transparent and emissive films based on perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) is a challenging task since their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) typically drops abruptly when they are used as building blocks to make a solid. In this work, we obtain highly transparent films containing FAPbBr₃ quantum dots that display a narrow green emission (λ = 530 nm, full width at half-maximum (FWHM) = 23 nm) with a PLQY as high as 86%. The method employed makes use of porous matrices that act as arrays of nanoreactors to synthesize the targeted quantum dots within their void space, providing both a means to keep them dispersed and a protective environment. Further infiltration with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) increases the mechanical and chemical stability of the ensemble and serves to passivate surface defects, boosting the emission of the embedded PQD and significantly reducing the width of the emission peak, which fulfills the requirements established by the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) to be considered an ultrapure green emitter. The versatility of this approach is demonstrated by fabricating a color-converting layer that can be easily transferred onto a light-emitting device surface to modify the spectral properties of the outgoing radiation.

One-Dimensional Hybrid Copper(I) Iodide Single Crystal with Renewable Scintillation Properties

Low-dimensional hybrid copper(I) halides attract considerable attention in the field of light emissions. In this work, we obtained the centimeter-sized single crystal of 1,3-propanediamine copper(I) iodide (PDACuI₃) with a solvent evaporation method. The single crystal X-ray diffraction of PDACuI₃ reveals that the [CuI₄] tetrahedra form the corner-connected chains separated by PDAs, forming a one-dimensional structure with an orthorhombic space group of Pbca. The band gap is determined to be 4.03 eV, and the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield is determined to be 26.5%. The thermal quenching and negative thermal quenching of emission are observed via temperature-dependent PL spectra, and our study shows that the intermediate nonradiative state below the self-trapped exciton state may get involved in these temperature-dependent behaviors. The X-ray scintillation performance of PDACuI₃ single crystals is also evaluated, and the relative light output renewed to 94.3% of the fresh one after a low-temperature annealing. On the basis of our results, PDACuI₃ single crystals provide nontoxicity and renewable scintillation performance, thus showing potential application in the area of low-cost radiation detectors.

Thermal tolerance of perovskite quantum dots dependent on A-site cation and surface ligand

A detailed picture of temperature dependent behavior of CsxFA1-xPbI3 perovskite quantum dots across the composition range is constructed by performing in situ optical spectroscopic and structural measurements, supported by theoretical calculations that focus on the relation between A-site chemical composition and surface ligand binding. The thermal degradation mechanism depends not only on the exact chemical composition, but also on the ligand binding energy. The thermal degradation of Cs-rich perovskite quantum dots is induced by a phase transition from black γ-phase to yellow δ-phase, while FA-rich perovskite quantum dots with higher ligand binding energy directly decompose into PbI2. Quantum dot growth to form large bulk size grain is observed for all CsxFA1-xPbI3 perovskite quantum dots at elevated temperatures. In addition, FA-rich quantum dots possess stronger electron-longitudinal optical phonon coupling, suggesting that photogenerated excitons in FA-rich quantum dots have higher probability to be dissociated by phonon scattering compared to Cs-rich quantum dots.

Responsive Optical Materials Based on Ligand-Free Perovskite Quantum Dots Embedded in Mesoporous Scaffolds

Herein we show that dispersing inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr₃) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) in optical quality films, possessing an accessible and controlled pore size distribution, gives rise to fluorescent materials with a controlled and highly sensitive response to ambient changes. A scaffold-based synthesis approach is employed to obtain ligand-free QDs, whose pristine surface endows them with high sensitivity to the presence of different vapors in their vicinity. At the same time, the void network of the host offers a means to gradually expose the embedded QDs to such vapors. Under these conditions, the luminescent response of the QDs is mediated by the mesostructure of the matrix, which determines the rate at which vapor molecules will adsorb onto the pore walls and, eventually, condensate, filling the void space. With luminescence quantum yields as high as 60%, scaffold-supported ligand-free perovskite nanocrystals display intense photoemission signals over the whole process, as well as high photo- and chemical stability, which allows illuminating them for long periods of time and recovering the original response upon desorption of the condensed phase. The results herein presented open a new route to explore the application of perovskite QD-based materials in sensing.

Understanding Electron-Phonon Interactions in 3D Lead Halide Perovskites from the Stereochemical Expression of 6s2 Lone Pairs

The electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. Unveiling how the local lattice distortion responds to charge carriers is a critical step toward understanding the e-ph interaction in LHPs. Herein, we advance a fundamental understanding of the e-ph interaction in LHPs from the perspective of stereochemical activity of 6s² lone-pair electrons on the Pb²⁺ cation. We demonstrate a model system based on three LHPs with distinctive lone-pair activities for studying the structure-property relationships. By tuning the A-cation chemistry, we synthesized single-crystal CsPbBr₃, (MA_0.13EA_0.87)PbBr₃ (MA⁺ = methylammonium; EA⁺ = ethylammonium), and (MHy)PbBr₃ (MHy⁺ = methylhydrazinium), which exhibit stereo-inactive, dynamic stereo-active, and static stereo-active lone pairs, respectively. This gives rise to distinctive local lattice distortions and low-frequency vibrational modes. We find that the e-ph interaction leads to a blue shift of the band gap as temperature increases in the structure with the dynamic stereo-active lone pair but to a red shift in the structure with the static stereo-active lone pair. Furthermore, analyses of the temperature-dependent low-energy photoluminescence tails reveal that the strength of the e-ph interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a transition from a large polaron to a small polaron, which has significant influence on the emission spectra and charge carrier dynamics. Our results highlight the role of the lone-pair activity in controlling the band gap, phonon, and polaronic effect in LHPs and provide guidelines for optimizing the optoelectronic properties, especially for tin-based and germanium-based halide perovskites, where stereo-active lone pairs are more prominent than their lead counterparts.

Temperature-Dependent Luminescence and Anisotropic Optical Properties of Centimeter-Sized One-Dimensional Perovskite Trimethylammonium Lead Iodide Single Crystals

Low-dimensional hybrid halide perovskite materials with self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions and anisotropic properties are highly attractive for their great potential in many applications. However, to date, reports on large one-dimensional (1D) perovskite single crystals have been limited. Here, centimeter-sized 1D single crystals of trimethylammonium lead iodide (TMAPbI₃) with typical STE emission are synthesized by an antisolvent vapor-assisted crystallization method. Thermal quenching and antiquenching with a high relative sensitivity of photoluminescence (PL) are observed and studied via temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. Further analysis indicates that the temperature-dependent PL behaviors are influenced by the self-trapping of the free exciton and the migrations between self-trapped excitons and intermediate nonradiative states. The TMAPbI₃ single crystal also exhibits a linearly polarized emission and a large birefringence that is higher than those of commercial birefringent crystals. This 1D perovskite with high structural anisotropy has promise for applications in versatile optical- and luminescence-related fields.

MAPbBr3nanocrystals from aqueous solution for poly(methyl methacrylate)-MAPbBr3nanocrystal films with compression-resistant photoluminescence

In this work, we develop an environmental-friendly approach to produce organic-inorganic hybrid MAPbBr₃(MA = CH₃NH₃) perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) and PMMA-MAPbBr₃NC films with excellent compression-resistant PL characteristics. Deionized water is used as the solvent to synthesize MAPbBr₃powder instead of conventionally-used hazardous organic solvents. The MAPbBr₃PeNCs derived from the MAPbBr₃powder exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 93.86%. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-MAPbBr₃NC films made from the MAPbBr₃PeNCs retain ∼97% and ∼91% of initial PL intensity after 720 h aging in ambient environment at 50 °C and 70 °C, respectively. The PMMA-MAPbBr₃NC films also exhibit compression-resistant photoluminescent characteristics in contrast to the PMMA-CsPbBr₃NC films under a compressive stress of 1.6 MPa. The PMMA-MAPbBr₃NC film integrated with a red emissive film and a blue light emitting source achieves an LCD backlight of ∼114% color gamut of National Television System Committee (NTSC) 1953 standard.

Enhanced Performance of Two-Photon Excited Amplified Spontaneous Emission by Cd-Alloyed CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

It has been demonstrated that the alloyed perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with a small amount of Cd element may passivate the inherent halide vacancies in perovskite NCs and improve their stability. However, the study of the optical properties of such alloyed perovskite NCs still remains essentially untouched, which will seriously hinder relevant applications. Herein, using different amounts of CdBr₂ as an alloyed metal precursor, a series of CsPb_xCd_1-xBr₃ NCs (x = 1, 0.93, and 0.88) were synthesized. Compared with bare CsPbBr₃ NCs, the Cd-alloyed NCs exhibited a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (99%), efficiently improved stability, and enhanced electron-phonon coupling strength. As the Cd-alloyed amount was increased, their hot-carrier cooling time became faster and the exciton-biexciton interaction decreased, causing a decreased threshold of two-photon excited amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from 1.58 to 1.23 mJ cm^-2. In addition, the Cd-alloying method can also improve the photostability of ASE, resulting in the initial ASE intensity remaining at 90% even after 7.5 × 10⁵ pulse shots. This work implies that the Cd-alloyed CsPbBr₃ NCs will be promising for application in a laser gain medium.

Mixed Dimethylammonium/Methylammonium Lead Halide Perovskite Crystals for Improved Structural Stability and Enhanced Photodetection

The solvent acidolysis crystallization technique is utilized to grow mixed dimethylammonium/methylammonium lead tribromide (DMA/MAPbBr₃ ) crystals reaching the highest dimethylammonium incorporation of 44% while maintaining the 3D cubic perovskite phase. These mixed perovskite crystals show suppression of the orthorhombic phase and a lower tetragonal-to-cubic phase-transition temperature compared to MAPbBr₃ . A distinct behavior is observed in the temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties of MAPbBr₃ and mixed DMA/MAPbBr₃ crystals due to the different organic cation dynamics governing the phase transition(s). Furthermore, lateral photodetectors based on these crystals show that, at room temperature, the mixed crystals possess higher detectivity compared to MAPbBr₃ crystals caused by structural compression and reduced surface trap density. Remarkably, the mixed-crystal devices exhibit large enhancement in their detectivity below the phase-transition temperature (at 200 K), while for the MAPbBr₃ devices only insignificant changes are observed. The high detectivity of the mixed crystals makes them attractive for visible-light communication and for space applications. The results highlight the importance of the synthetic technique for compositional engineering of halide perovskites that governs their structural and optoelectronic properties.
