Observation and Identification of a New OH Stretch Vibrational Band at the Surface of Ice

Quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen bonding in nanoconfined ice

The Bernal-Fowler ice rules stipulate that each water molecule in an ice crystal should form four hydrogen bonds. However, in extreme or constrained conditions, the arrangement of water molecules deviates from conventional ice rules, resulting in properties significantly different from bulk water. In this study, we employ machine learning-driven first-principles simulations to identify a new stabilization mechanism in nanoconfined ice phases. Instead of forming four hydrogen bonds, nanoconfined crystalline ice can form a quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded structure that exhibits only two hydrogen bonds per water molecule. These structures consist of strongly hydrogen-bonded linear chains of water molecules that zig-zag along one dimension, stabilized by van der Waals interactions that stack these chains along the other dimension. The unusual interplay of hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions in nanoconfined ice results in atypical proton behavior such as potential ferroelectric behavior, low dielectric response, and long-range proton dynamics.

Synthesis of Heteromorphic Bi2WO6 Films With an Interpenetrate 1D/2D Network Structure for Efficient and Stable Photocatalytic Degradation of VOCs

2D layered Bi2WO6 (BWO) is a widely used attractive photocatalyst for degrading VOCs, but the low visible-light utilization and the easy stacking 2D nanosheets (NSs) limit photocatalysis efficiency and stability. Here, inspired by Eucalyptus, a synergistic strategy of multiscale domain-confinement and electrostatic force action, based on electrospinning is proposed, for fabricating a heteromorphic BWO photocatalyst. It is found that BWO NSs can grow radially in an orderly spaced arrangement along BWO nanofibers (NFs) during sintering, thereby forming 1D/2D BWO junctions like eucalyptus leaves. This interpenetrating 1D/2D network structure not only solves the easy stacking problem of BWO NSs but also selectively exposes the {010} crystal planes that exhibit efficient hole oxidation. In addition, this peculiar structure enriches electrons at the 1D/2D interface to avoid carrier recombination, thus improving the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalyst material with a reduced bandgap width from 2.56 to 2.49 eV can rapidly degrade 100% of acetaldehyde under visible light without using sacrificial agents and photosensitizers and shows superior stability for eight cycles without any decay. This study provides a feasible method to synthesize an efficient and stable BWO photocatalyst.

Highly Efficient Far-Red Emitting Mg21Ca4Na4(PO4)18: Ce3+, Eu3+ Luminescent Glasses: A Novel Approach Towards Plant Cultivation Technologies

One of the exciting developments in contemporary luminescence research is the development of rare earth triggered luminescent glasses, which are a type of lanthanide activated luminous material. For the first time, Ce3+, Eu3+ activated/co-activated Mg21Ca4Na4(PO4)18 orthophosphate glasses have been synthesized using the proposed work's melt quenching technique. The proposed glass sample's XRD pattern has an amorphous character, although its most prominent peak matches data from the Mg21Ca4Na4(PO4)18 standard ICSD database. FT-IR analysis was used to analyze the proposed glass sample's vibrational characteristics. Co-activated Mg21Ca4Na4(PO4)18 glass exhibits large emission peaks under UV excitations that cover the far red area during a photoluminescence examination. These outcomes demonstrate the proposed sample's value in applications such as WLEDs and plant cultivation.

Imaging surface structure and premelting of ice Ih with atomic resolution

Ice surfaces are closely relevant to many physical and chemical properties, such as melting, freezing, friction, gas uptake and atmospheric reaction1-8. Despite extensive experimental and theoretical investigations9-17, the exact atomic structures of ice interfaces remain elusive owing to the vulnerable hydrogen-bonding network and the complicated premelting process. Here we realize atomic-resolution imaging of the basal (0001) surface structure of hexagonal water ice (ice Ih) by using qPlus-based cryogenic atomic force microscopy with a carbon monoxide-functionalized tip. We find that the crystalline ice-Ih surface consists of mixed Ih- and cubic (Ic)-stacking nanodomains, forming 19 × 19 periodic superstructures. Density functional theory reveals that this reconstructed surface is stabilized over the ideal ice surface mainly by minimizing the electrostatic repulsion between dangling OH bonds. Moreover, we observe that the ice surface gradually becomes disordered with increasing temperature (above 120 Kelvin), indicating the onset of the premelting process. The surface premelting occurs from the defective boundaries between the Ih and Ic domains and can be promoted by the formation of a planar local structure. These results put an end to the longstanding debate on ice surface structures and shed light on the molecular origin of ice premelting, which may lead to a paradigm shift in the understanding of ice physics and chemistry.

First-principles spectroscopy of aqueous interfaces using machine-learned electronic and quantum nuclear effects

Vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful approach to visualising interfacial phenomena. However, extracting structural and dynamical information from vibrational spectra is a challenge that requires first-principles simulations, including non-Condon and quantum nuclear effects. We address this challenge by developing a machine-learning enhanced first-principles framework to speed up predictive modelling of infrared, Raman, and sum-frequency generation spectra. Our approach uses machine learning potentials that encode quantum nuclear effects to generate quantum trajectories using simple molecular dynamics efficiently. In addition, we reformulate bulk and interfacial selection rules to express them unambiguously in terms of the derivatives of polarisation and polarisabilities of the whole system and predict these derivatives efficiently using fully-differentiable machine learning models of dielectric response tensors. We demonstrate our framework's performance by predicting the IR, Raman, and sum-frequency generation spectra of liquid water, ice and the water-air interface by achieving near quantitative agreement with experiments at nearly the same computational efficiency as pure classical methods. Finally, to aid the experimental discovery of new phases of nanoconfined water, we predict the temperature-dependent vibrational spectra of monolayer water across the solid-hexatic-liquid phases transition.

Various states of water species in an anion exchange membrane characterized by Raman spectroscopy under controlled temperature and humidity

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) hold the key to future mass commercialisation of fuel cell technology, even though currently, AEMFCs perform less optimally than proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Unlike PEMFCs, AEMFCs have demonstrated the capability to operate independently of Pt group metal-based catalysts. Water characterization inside the membrane is one factor that significantly influences the performance of AEMFCs. In this paper, different water species inside an anion exchange membrane (AEM), QPAF-4, developed at the University of Yamanashi, were studied for the first time using micro-Raman spectroscopy. Spectra of pure water, alkaline solutions, and calculations based on density functional theory were used to identify the water species in the AEM. The OH stretching band was deconvoluted into nine unique Gaussian bands. All the hydrogen-bonded OH species increased steadily with increasing humidity, while the CH and non-H-bonded OH remained relatively constant. These results confirm the viability of micro-Raman spectroscopy in studying the various water-related species in AEMs. The availability of this technique is an essential prerequisite in improving the ionic conductivity and effectively solving the persisting durability challenge facing AEMFCs, thus hastening the possibility of mass commercialisation of fuel cells.

Strengthening Aqueous Electrolytes without Strengthening Water

Aqueous electrolytes typically suffer from poor electrochemical stability; however, eutectic aqueous solutions-25 wt.% LiCl and 62 wt.% H3 PO4 -cooled to -78 °C exhibit a significantly widened stability window. Integrated experimental and simulation results reveal that, upon cooling, Li+ ions become less hydrated and pair up with Cl- , ice-like water clusters form, and H⋅⋅⋅Cl- bonding strengthens. Surprisingly, this low-temperature solvation structure does not strengthen water molecules' O-H bond, bucking the conventional wisdom that increasing water's stability requires stiffening the O-H covalent bond. We propose a more general mechanism for water's low temperature inertness in the electrolyte: less favorable solvation of OH- and H+ , the byproducts of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. To showcase this stability, we demonstrate an aqueous Li-ion battery using LiMn2 O4 cathode and CuSe anode with a high energy density of 109 Wh/kg. These results highlight the potential of aqueous batteries for polar and extraterrestrial missions.

Perturbative vibration of the coupled hydrogen-bond (O:H-O) in water

Perturbation Raman spectroscopy has underscored the hydrogen bond (O:H-O or HB) cooperativity and polarizability (HBCP) for water, which offers a proper parameter space for the performance of the HB and electrons in the energy-space-time domains. The OO repulsive coupling drives the O:H-O segmental length and energy to relax cooperatively upon perturbation. Mechanical compression shortens and stiffens the O:H nonbond while lengthens and softens the HO bond associated with polarization. However, electrification by an electric field or charge injection, or molecular undercoordination at a surface, relaxes the O:H-O in a contrasting way to the compression with derivation of the supersolid phase that is viscoelastic, less dense, thermally diffusive, and mechanically and thermally more stable. The HO bond exhibits negative thermal expansivity in the liquid and the ice-I phase while its length responds in proportional to temperature in the quasisolid phase. The O:H-O relaxation modifies the mass densities, phase boundaries, critical temperatures and the polarization endows the slipperiness of ice and superfluidity of water at the nanometer scale. Protons injection by acid solvation creates the H↔H anti-HB and introduction of electron lone pairs derives the O:⇔:O super-HB into the solutions of base or H₂O₂ hydrogen-peroxide. The repulsive H↔H and O:⇔:O interactions lengthen the solvent HO bond while the solute HO bond contracts because its bond order loss. Differential phonon spectroscopy quantifies the abundance, structure order, and stiffness of the bonds transiting from the mode of pristine water to the perturbed states. The HBCP and the perturbative spectroscopy have enabled the dynamic potentials for the relaxing O:H-O bond. Findings not only amplified the power of the Raman spectroscopy but also substantiated the understanding of anomalies of water subjecting to perturbation.

Local Ice-like Structure at the Liquid Water Surface

Experiments and computer simulations have established that liquid water's surfaces can deviate in important ways from familiar bulk behavior. Even in the simplest case of an air-water interface, distinctive layering, orientational biases, and hydrogen bond arrangements have been reported, but an overarching picture of their origins and relationships has been incomplete. Here we show that a broad set of such observations can be understood through an analogy with the basal face of crystalline ice. Using simulations, we demonstrate a number of structural similarities between water and ice surfaces, suggesting the presence of domains at the air-water interface with ice-like features that persist over 2-3 molecular diameters. Most prominent is a shared characteristic layering of molecular density and orientation perpendicular to the interface. Lateral correlations of hydrogen bond network geometry point to structural similarities in the parallel direction as well. Our results bolster and significantly extend previous conceptions of ice-like structure at the liquid's boundary and suggest that the much-discussed quasi-liquid layer on ice evolves subtly above the melting point into a quasi-ice layer at the surface of liquid water.

A novel 3D Zn-coordination polymer based on a multiresponsive fluorescent sensor demonstrating outstanding sensitivities and selectivities for the efficient detection of multiple analytes

A novel and unusual 3D luminescent coordination polymer (CP) [Zn₂(3-bpah)(bpta)(H₂O)]·3H₂O (1), where 3-bpah denotes N,N'-bis(3-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,2-cyclohexane and H₄bpta denotes 2,2',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal methods from Zn(II) ions and 3-bpah and bpta ligands. The structure of this CP was investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis along with single crystal X-ray diffraction. Notably, 1 exhibits remarkable fluorescence behavior and stability over a wide pH range and in various pure organic solvents. More importantly, 1 can become an outstanding candidate for the selective and sensitive sensing of Fe³⁺, Mg²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, MnO₄^-, nitrobenzene (NB) and nitromethane (NM), at an extremely low detection limit. The changes in the fluorescence intensity exhibited by these six analytes in the presence of 1 over a wide pH range indicate that this polymer can be an excellent luminescent sensor. To the best of our knowledge, 1 is a rare example of a CP-based multiresponsive fluorescent sensor for metal cations, anions, and toxic organic solvents.

Effect of LDHs and Other Clays on Polymer Composite in Adsorptive Removal of Contaminants: A Review

Recently, the development of a unique class of layered silicate nanomaterials has attracted considerable interest for treatment of wastewater. Clean water is an essential commodity for healthier life, agriculture and a safe environment at large. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and other clay hybrids are emerging as potential nanostructured adsorbents for water purification. These LDH hybrids are referred to as hydrotalcite-based materials or anionic clays and promising multifunctional two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. They are used in many applications including photocatalysis, energy storage, nanocomposites, adsorption, diffusion and water purification. The adsorption and diffusion capacities of various toxic contaminants heavy metal ions and dyes on different unmodified and modified LDH-samples are discussed comparatively with other types of nanoclays acting as adsorbents. This review focuses on the preparation methods, comparison of adsorption and diffusion capacities of LDH-hybrids and other nanoclay materials for the treatment of various contaminants such as heavy metal ions and dyes.

Freezing of Aqueous Carboxylic Acid Solutions on Ice

We study the properties of acetic acid and propionic acid solutions at the surface of monocrystalline ice with surface-specific vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) and heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (HD-VSFG). When we decrease the temperature toward the eutectic point of the acid solutions, we observe the formation of a freeze concentrated solution (FCS) of the carboxylic acids that is brought about by a freeze-induced phase separation (FIPS). The freeze concentrated solution freezes on top of the ice surface as we cool the system below the eutectic point. We find that for freeze concentrated acetic acid solutions the freezing causes a strong decrease of the VSFG signal, while for propionic acid an increase and a blue-shift are observed. This different behavior points at a distinct difference in molecular-scale behavior when cooling below the eutectic point. We find that cooling of the propionic acid solution below the eutectic point leads to the formation of hydrogen-bonded dimers with an opposite alignment of the carboxylic acid O–H groups.

Molecular Structure and Modeling of Water-Air and Ice-Air Interfaces Monitored by Sum-Frequency Generation

From a glass of water to glaciers in Antarctica, water-air and ice-air interfaces are abundant on Earth. Molecular-level structure and dynamics at these interfaces are key for understanding many chemical/physical/atmospheric processes including the slipperiness of ice surfaces, the surface tension of water, and evaporation/sublimation of water. Sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to probe the molecular-level structure of these interfaces because SFG can specifically probe the topmost interfacial water molecules separately from the bulk and is sensitive to molecular conformation. Nevertheless, experimental SFG has several limitations. For example, SFG cannot provide information on the depth of the interface and how the orientation of the molecules varies with distance from the surface. By combining the SFG spectroscopy with simulation techniques, one can directly compare the experimental data with the simulated SFG spectra, allowing us to unveil the molecular-level structure of water-air and ice-air interfaces. Here, we present an overview of the different simulation protocols available for SFG spectra calculations. We systematically compare the SFG spectra computed with different approaches, revealing the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods. Furthermore, we account for the findings through combined SFG experiments and simulations and provide future challenges for SFG experiments and simulations at different aqueous interfaces.

Hydrogen order at the surface of ice Ih revealed by vibrational spectroscopy

A combination of heterodyne-detected sum frequency generation spectroscopy and theoretical modeling elucidates that the surface of ice I_h at 100 K has hydrogen order with the OH group pointing upward to the air (“H-up” orientation).

Nuclear Quantum Effect on the χ(2) Band Shape of Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation Spectra of Normal and Deuterated Water Surfaces

In the vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectrum of the air/water interface, there is an open question whether the imaginary spectrum of nonlinear susceptibility Im[χ⁽²⁾] has a positive band in the low-frequency tail of the OH stretching band. We previously elucidated by molecular dynamics (MD) analysis of the VSFG spectrum that the positive band could arise from particularly strong hydrogen-bonded water pairs at the water surface. This mechanism should be emphasized in OD stretching in comparison to OH, because OD forms stronger hydrogen bonds. Therefore, we calculated the Im[χ⁽²⁾] spectra of normal and deuterated water surfaces by MD simulation including the nuclear quantum effect and demonstrated that the low-frequency positive feature could arise in the tail of the OD stretching band. This positive feature is sensitive to the oxygen-oxygen distance of hydrogen-bonding pairs at the surface and hence the temperature and disappears with increasing temperature.

Preparation, physicochemical properties, in vitro evaluation and release behavior of cephalexin-loaded niosomes

In this study, optimized cephalexin-loaded niosomal formulations based on span 60 and tween 60 were prepared as a promising drug carrier system. The niosomal formulations were characterized using a series of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurement. The size and drug encapsulation efficiency are determined by the type and composition of surfactant. The developed niosomal formulations showed great storage stability up to 30 days with low change in size and drug entrapment during the storage, making them potential candidates for real applications. Moreover, the prepared niosomes showed negligible cytotoxicity for HepG2 cells, measured by MTT assay. The antibacterial properties of cephalexin-loaded niosome were investigated using S. aureus and E. coli as gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, respectively. The results showed that the encapsulation of antibiotic drug in niosomal formulation could enhance the antibacterial efficiency of the drug, where the minimum inhibitory concentration was droped from 8 µg/mL (cephalexin) to 4 µg/mL (cephalexin-loaded niosome) and from 4 µg/mL (cephalexin) to 1 µg/mL (cephalexin-loaded niosome) against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The findings of our study show that the improvement of cephalexin bioavailability and prolonged drug release profile could be obtained by niosomal formulation as a favorable antibiotic drug delivery system.

Structure and Dynamics of Water at the Water-Air Interface Using First-Principles Molecular Dynamics Simulations. II. NonLocal vs Empirical van der Waals Corrections

van der Waals (vdW) correction schemes have been recognized to be essential for an accurate description of liquid water in first-principles molecular dynamics simulation. The description of the structure and dynamics of water is governed by the type of the vdW corrections. So far, two vdW correction schemes have been often used: empirical vdW corrections and nonlocal vdW corrections. In this paper, we assess the influence of the empirical vs nonlocal vdW correction schemes on the structure and dynamics of water at the water–air interface. Since the structure of water at the water–air interface is established by a delicate balance of hydrogen bond formation and breaking, the simulation at the water–air interface provides a unique platform to testify as to the heterogeneous interaction of water. We used the metrics [Ohto et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2019, 15, 595−60230468702] which are directly connected with the sum-frequency generation spectroscopic measurement. We find that the overall performance of nonlocal vdW methods is either similar or worse compared to the empirical vdW methods. We also investigated the performance of the optB88-DRSLL functional, which showed slightly less accuracy than the revPBE-D3 method. We conclude that the revPBE-D3 method shows the best performance for describing the interfacial water.

Phase-Sensitive Sum-Frequency Generation Measurements Using a Femtosecond Nonlinear Interferometer

Phase-sensitive sum-frequency spectroscopy is a unique tool to interrogate the vibrational structure of interfaces. A precise understanding of the interfacial structure often relies on accurately determining the phase of χ⁽²⁾, which has recently been demonstrated using a nonlinear interferometer in conjunction with a frequency-scanning picosecond laser system. Here, we implement nonlinear interferometry using a femtosecond laser system for broadband sum-frequency generation. The phase of the vibrational response from a self-assembled monolayer of octadecanethiol on gold is determined using the nonlinear femtosecond interferometer. The results are compared to those obtained using the more traditional heterodyne-detected phase measurements. Both methods give a similar phase spectrum and phase uncertainty. We also discuss the origin of the phase uncertainties and provide guidelines for further improvement.

Comparative Adsorption of Acetone on Water and Ice Surfaces

Small organic molecules on ice and water surfaces are ubiquitous in nature and play a crucial role in many environmentally relevant processes. Herein, we combine surface‐specific vibrational spectroscopy and a controllable flow cell apparatus to investigate the molecular adsorption of acetone onto the basal plane of single‐crystalline hexagonal ice with a large surface area. By comparing the adsorption of acetone on the ice/air and the water/air interface, we observed two different types of acetone adsorption, as apparent from the different responses of both the free O−H and the hydrogen‐bonded network vibrations for ice and liquid water. Adsorption on ice occurs preferentially through interactions with the free OH group, while the interaction of acetone with the surface of liquid water appears less specific.

Water at surfaces with tunable surface chemistries

Aqueous interfaces are ubiquitous in natural environments, spanning atmospheric, geological, oceanographic, and biological systems, as well as in technical applications, such as fuel cells and membrane filtration. Where liquid water terminates at a surface, an interfacial region is formed, which exhibits distinct properties from the bulk aqueous phase. The unique properties of water are governed by the hydrogen-bonded network. The chemical and physical properties of the surface dictate the boundary conditions of the bulk hydrogen-bonded network and thus the interfacial properties of the water and any molecules in that region. Understanding the properties of interfacial water requires systematically characterizing the structure and dynamics of interfacial water as a function of the surface chemistry. In this review, we focus on the use of experimental surface-specific spectroscopic methods to understand the properties of interfacial water as a function of surface chemistry. Investigations of the air-water interface, as well as efforts in tuning the properties of the air-water interface by adding solutes or surfactants, are briefly discussed. Buried aqueous interfaces can be accessed with careful selection of spectroscopic technique and sample configuration, further expanding the range of chemical environments that can be probed, including solid inorganic materials, polymers, and water immiscible liquids. Solid substrates can be finely tuned by functionalization with self-assembled monolayers, polymers, or biomolecules. These variables provide a platform for systematically tuning the chemical nature of the interface and examining the resulting water structure. Finally, time-resolved methods to probe the dynamics of interfacial water are briefly summarized before discussing the current status and future directions in studying the structure and dynamics of interfacial water.

Reduced Near-Resonant Vibrational Coupling at the Surfaces of Liquid Water and Ice

We study the resonant interaction of the OH stretch vibrations of water molecules at the surfaces of liquid water and ice using heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy. By studying different isotopic mixtures of H₂O and D₂O, we vary the strength of the interaction, and we monitor the resulting effect on the HD-SFG spectrum of the OH stretch vibrations. We observe that the near-resonant coupling effects are weaker at the surface than in the bulk, for both water and ice, indicating that for both phases of water the OH vibrations are less strongly delocalized at the surface than in the bulk.

Proton Order toward the Surface of Ice Ih Revealed by Heterodyne-Detected Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

Using heterodyne-detected sum frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy, we investigated surface proton order at the basal, primary prism, and secondary prism faces of single-crystalline ice I_h at ca. 130 K. The complex phase of the obtained spectra clearly indicates that second-order nonlinear polarization from which the HD-SFG signal arises is generated exclusively at the surfaces. This suggests surface proton ordering along the normal, whereas the bulk remains proton-disordered, as is well known for ice I_h. A strong positive peak observed in the HD-SFG spectra enables us to determine the "direction" of the surface proton order as "H-up", that is, the hydrogen atom of the OH group pointing away from the bulk, irrespective of the ice faces. Reliable HD-SFG measurements carried out in the present study have greatly advanced our understanding of surface structure of ice I_h.

Excess Hydrogen Bond at the Ice-Vapor Interface around 200 K

Phase-resolved sum-frequency generation measurements combined with molecular dynamics simulations are employed to study the effect of temperature on the molecular arrangement of water on the basal face of ice. The topmost monolayer, interrogated through its nonhydrogen-bonded, free O-H stretch peak, exhibits a maximum in surface H-bond density around 200 K. This maximum results from two competing effects: above 200 K, thermal fluctuations cause the breaking of H bonds; below 200 K, the formation of bulklike crystalline interfacial structures leads to H-bond breaking. Knowledge of the surface structure of ice is critical for understanding reactions occurring on ice surfaces and ice nucleation.
