Construction of a Copper Bismuthate/Graphene Nanocomposite for Electrochemical Detection of Catechol

Advanced chemically modified electrodes and platforms in food analysis and monitoring

Electrochemical sensors and electroanalytical techniques become emerging as effective and low-cost tools for rapid assessment of special parameters of the food quality. Chemically modified electrodes are developed to change properties and behaviour, particularly sensitivity and selectivity, of conventional electroanalytical sensors. Within this comprehensive review, novel trends in chemical modifiers material structure, electrodes construction and flow analysis platforms are described and evaluated. Numerous recent application examples for the detection of food specific analytes are presented in a form of table to stimulate further development in both, the basic research and commercial field.

3D/2D-Bismuth Oxybromide Spheres with Selenium-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride Sheets: An Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Detection of Arsenic Drug Roxarsone

Heavy metals are crucial carcinogenic agents threatening the environment and living habituates. Among them, arsenic (As) is an important metalloid that is categorized as a group I toxic carcinogen. Roxarsone (RX) is an organoarsenic antibiotic compound primarily used as a veterinarian drug and growth promoter for poultry animals. The extensive usage of RX increased the accumulation of As in living beings and the ecosystem. Therefore, we have prepared an electrochemical sensor based on 3D bismuth oxybromide with 2D selenium-doped graphitic carbon nitride (BOB/SCN) electrocatalyst for the rapid detection of RX. The elemental and structural details were thoroughly investigated with several spectroscopic techniques. The electrochemical properties were measured by impedance and voltammetric measurements. The electrocatalytic behavior toward the RX was estimated with different voltammetric methods. Therefore, our BOB/SCN-based electrochemical sensor demonstrated a low detection limit (2.3 nM), low quantification value (7.7 nM), optimal sensitivity (0.675 μA μM-1 cm-2), and good linear ranges (0.01-77 and 77-857 μM). Additionally, this sensor showed good electrochemical performance and was applied to monitor the RX in various real samples with remarkable recoveries. Based on these results, our BOB/SCN sensor is a promising electrochemical platform for determining RX.

Synergism of Holmium Orthovanadate/Phosphorus-Doped Carbon Nitride Nanocomposite: Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide

Developing efficient and robust electrode materials for electrochemical sensors is critical for real-time analysis. In this paper, a hierarchical holmium vanadate/phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (HoVO4/P-CN) nanocomposite is synthesized and used as an electrode material for electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The HoVO4/P-CN nanocomposite exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity at a peak potential of -0.412 V toward H2O2 reduction in alkaline electrolytes while compared with other reported electrocatalysts. The HoVO4/P-CN electrochemical platform operated under the optimized conditions shows excellent analytical performance for H2O2 detection with a linear concentration range of 0.009-77.4 μM, a high sensitivity of 0.72 μA μM-1 cm-2, and a low detection limit of 3.0 nΜ. Furthermore, the HoVO4/P-CN-modified electrode exhibits high selectivity, remarkable stability, good repeatability, and satisfactory reproducibility in detecting H2O2. Its superior performance can be attributed to a large specific surface area, high conductivity, more active surface sites, unique structure, and synergistic action of HoVO4 and P-CN to benefit enhanced electrochemical activity. The proposed HoVO4/P-CN electrochemical platform is effectively applied to ascertain the quantity of H2O2 in food and biological samples. This work outlines a promising and effectual strategy for the sensitive electrochemical detection of H2O2 in real-world samples.

Effect of Modification of a Laccase-Based Electrochemical Biosensor with Carbon Nanotubes on Signal Separation of Dihydroxybenzene Isomers

This work describes a new electrochemical biosensor for the simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone. A laccase biorecognition layer was deposited using an innovative soft plasma polymerization technique onto a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to sufficiently separate catechol (CT) and hydroquinone (HQ) oxidation peaks. The electrochemical analysis carried out for MWCNTs with various morphologies was supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing differences in the electronic structures of both dihydroxybenzene isomers and the MWCNTs forming the biosensor interlayer. The best biosensor peak separation and biosensor analytical parameters were observed for the device containing 75 μg of MWCNTs with a higher internal diameter. For this laccase-based biosensor, a linearity range from 0.1 to 57 μM for catechol and 0.5 to 57 μM for hydroquinone as well as a sensitivity of 0.56 and 0.54 μA/μM for catechol and hydroquinone was observed, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) values were 0.028 and 0.15 μM for CT and HQ, respectively. This biosensor was also characterized by good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. It was successfully applied for the quantification of contaminants in the analysis of natural water samples.

Analyte-induced laccase-mimicking activity inhibition and conductivity enhancement of electroactive nanozymes for ratiometric electrochemical detection of thiram

Most nanozyme-based electrochemical sensing strategies depend on the catalytic formation of electroactive substances, while the electrochemical properties of nanozymes have rarely been explored. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated metal-organic framework served as precursors to prepare bioinspired nanozymes with both laccase-mimicking activity and electroactivity. Owing to the strong affinity between thiram (THR) and Cu(II) active sites in the nanozymes, the binding of THR inhibited nanozyme catalytic activity toward catechol (CT) oxidation and enhanced nanozyme conductivity. A lower oxidation current (ICT) of CT was accompanied by a higher oxidation signal (ICu) of Cu(II), allowing a ratiometric electrochemical response of the electroactive nanozymes toward the incoming THR. The signal ratio (ICu/ICT) displayed a good linear relationship over a THR concentration range of 10.0 nM-3.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.15 nM, and the entire THR detection process was rapidly accomplished within 5 min. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the developed electrochemical strategy guaranteed the reliable detection of THR in fruit, vegetable, and river water samples. This study provides new insights into the development of nanozymes for electrochemical analysis.

Target-Induced Electrochemical Sensor Based on Foldable Aptamer and MoS2@MWCNTs-PEI for Enhanced Detection of AFB1 in Peanuts

Herein, a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on aptamer folding was constructed to detect aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in peanuts. Specifically, polyethylenimine-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2@MWCNTs-PEI) were used as the electrode matrix to enable a large specific surface area, which were characterized by the Randles-Sevcik equation. Additionally, AuNPs were used to immobilize the aptamer via the Au-S covalent bond and provide a favorable microenvironment for signal enhancement. Methylene blue (MB) was modified at the proximal 3' termini of the aptamer as the capture probe, while the signal transduction of the sensor was obtained through changes in conformation and position of MB induced by the binding between AFB1 and the probe. Changes in spatial conformation could be recorded by electrochemical methods more readily. This electrochemical aptasensor demonstrated remarkable sensitivity to AFB1 with an extensive detection range (1 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL) and a lower limit detection (1.0 × 10-3 ng/mL). Moreover, using the constructed aptasensor, AFB1 was identified successfully in peanut samples, with recoveries ranging from 95.83 to 107.53%, illustrating its potential use in determining AFB1 in food.

An electrochemical ratiometric biosensor for the detection of dopamine based on an MXene-Au nanocomposite

Compared with single signal detection, a ratiometric biosensor could offer more accurate and reliable results. Here, a ratiometric electrochemical biosensor for the sensitive and accurate detection of dopamine was developed based on the strong adsorption ability of MXene-Au toward methylene blue, an inner reference element. This ratiometric sensing strategy opened up a new avenue for the development of a ratiometric platform.

Synthesis of perovskite-type potassium niobate using deep eutectic solvents: A promising electrode material for detection of bisphenol A

This study demonstrates a hydrothermal method to prepare perovskite-type potassium niobate (KNbO₃) through deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is further used as an electrode material for the determination of bisphenol A (BPA). The as-synthesized KNbO₃ was systematically characterized by different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The KNbO₃-modified electrode demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic activity for BPA compared to the pristine electrode. The enhanced performance of the proposed sensor is attributed to the numerous active sites, large electrochemical surface area, high electrical conductivity, and rapid electron transfer. The fabricated sensor shows a wide detection range (0.01-84.3 μM), a low limit of detection (0.003 μM), a high sensitivity (0.51 μA μM^-1 cm^-2), and good anti-interference abilities towards the BPA detection by linear sweep voltammetry method. Besides, it was successfully applied to determining BPA in food samples, demonstrating good practicability. This design paves a new way to fabricate efficient electrode material for various electrochemical applications using a DES medium.

Bismuth sulfide microstructures decorated with functionalized boron nitride composite for electrochemical detection of sulfadiazine

In this work, the hydrothermal method was used to synthesize f-BN@Bi₂S₃ nanocomposite and used as an electrocatalyst for the detection of sulfadiazine (SD) drug. Various spectroscopic and voltammetric techniques were adopted to evaluate the morphological and structural features of the prepared materials. The modification of the electrode results in good electrocatalytic activity and excellent sensitive towards the oxidation of SD because of its huge active surface area, high sensitivity, and electrical conductivity provided by the synergistic effects of the f-BN@Bi₂S₃ nanocomposite. This modified electrode exhibited linearity in the range 0.01-62 µM at E_pa = 0.93 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, according to the electrochemical reaction towards the SD, a modified electrode of f-BN@Bi₂S₃ has a LOD value of 0.0015 µM, sensitivity (8.42 μA·μM^-1·cm^-2), good anti-interfering ability, and good repeatability. The suggested electrochemical sensor has high detection performance for monitoring water and urine samples. Notably, relative standard deviations (RSD) and recoveries of the proposed sensor for spiked water and urine samples are in the ranges of 0.014-0.75% and 98.97-99.98% (n = 3), respectively.
