Abstract
Deformable liquid crystal polymers (LCPs), which exhibit both entropic elasticity of polymer networks and anisotropic properties originating from ordered mesogens, have gained more and more interest for use as biomedical soft actuators. Especially, LCP actuators with controllable mesogen alignment, sophisticated geometry and reprogrammability are a rising star on the horizon of soft actuators, since they enable complex and multiple actuations. This review focuses on two topics: (1) the regulation of mesogen alignment and geometry of LCP actuators for complex actuations; (2) newly designed reprogrammable LCP materials for multiple actuations. First, basic actuation mechanisms are briefly introduced. Then, LCP actuators with complex actuations are demonstrated. Special attention is devoted to the improvement of fabrication methods, which profoundly influence the available complexity of the mesogen alignment and geometry. Subsequently, reprogrammable LCP actuators featuring dynamic networks or shape memory effects are discussed, with an emphasis on their multiple actuations. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and potential development trends toward more intelligent LCP actuators are discussed, which may shed light on future investigations in this field.

Abstract
Through the effective combination of photothermal conversion agent polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles and epoxy acrylate polymer (EA), a new kind of near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered shape memory polymer (PDA/EA) is developed. Due to the outstanding photothermal effect of PDA, even with a very low concentration of PDA (0.1 wt.%), when exposed to an 808 nm NIR light with a power of 1 W/cm2, the temporary shapes can be fully light-responsive, recovered in 60 s. Based on dynamic thermomechanical analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis, it can be seen that the introduction of PDA is beneficial for improving dynamic mechanical properties and thermal resistance compared to EA. As an environmentally friendly and highly efficient photoactive SMP, PDA/EA has a great application prospect.

Abstract
In many situations in everyday life, sunlight levels need to be reduced. Optical filters with asymmetric transmittance dependent on the incident angle would be useful for sunglasses and vehicle or architectural windows, among others. Herein, we realized the production of optical filters, called "louver filters", comprising HAN-type LC film produced using liquid crystalline ink with dichroic dyes. For the formation of the HAN-type LC film, the liquid crystalline ink was aligned on a rubbed polyimide layer and polymerized by UV irradiation. Two kinds of filters are proposed: one is a filter composed of HAN-type LC film and a polarizer, and the other is composed of two HAN-LC films with a half-wave plate between them. The dependence of the asymmetric transmittance on the incident angle was confirmed for these filters. The dependence changed depending on the pretilt angle of the alignment layers. Photographs taken with the optical filters displayed their effectiveness.

Abstract
The current development of soft shape-memory materials often results in materials that are typically limited to the synthesis of thin-walled specimens and usually rely on complex, low-yield manufacturing techniques to fabricate macro-sized, solid three-dimensional objects. However, such geometrical limitations and slow production rates can significantly hinder their practical implementation. In this work, we demonstrate a shape-memory composite material that can be effortlessly molded into arbitrary shapes or sizes. The composite material is made from main-chain liquid crystal elastomer (MC-LCE) microparticles dispersed in a silicone polymer matrix. Shape-programmability is achieved via low-temperature induced glassiness and hardening of MC-LCE inclusions, which effectively freezes-in any mechanically instilled deformations. Once thermally reset, the composite returns to its initial shape and can be shape-programmed again. Magnetically aligning MC-LCE microparticles prior to curing allows the shape-programmed artefacts to be additionally thermomechanically functionalized. Therefore, our material enables efficient morphing among the virgin, thermally-programmed, and thermomechanically-controlled shapes.

Abstract
Benefiting from the associative exchange reaction, vitrimers could be deformed to various shapes while maintaining the integrity of the network, thus being regarded as promising candidates for shape memory polymers. However, it is still a challenge to design the highly desired smart electronic devices with triple and multishape memory performances through a facile method. Here, a novel dual-cross-linked poly(acrylonitrile-co-butyl acrylate-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-zinc methacrylate) (Zn-PABHM) copolymer was developed via a facile and one-pot free radical polymerization strategy. Ionic cross-linking, the transcarbamoylation reaction, and glass transition were used to fix the permanent shape and two temporary shapes of the obtained ionomer vitrimer, respectively. The thermomechanical and stress relaxation performances of Zn-PABHM vitrimer can be customized by tuning the proportion of the chemical cross-linking and physical cross-linking knots. Furthermore, the Zn-PABHM was employed to construct a shape memory triboelectric nanogenerator, which demonstrates distinctive performance and tunable electrical outputs (37.4-96.0 V) due to variable contact areas enabled by triple shape memory effects. Consequently, the triple-shape memory ionomer vitrimer obtained via a facile and one-pot synthetic strategy has great potential in smart multifunctional electronic devices.

Abstract
![]()
Liquid-crystalline elastomers (LCEs)
are frequently used in soft
actuator development. However, applications are limited because LCEs
are prone to mechanical failure when subjected to heavy loads and
high temperatures during the working cycle. A mechanically tough LCE
system offers larger work capacity and lower failure rate for the
actuators. Herein, we adopt the double-network strategy, starting
with a siloxane-based exchangeable LCE and developing a series of
double-network liquid-crystalline elastomers (DN-LCEs) that are mechanically
tougher than the initial elastomer. We incorporate diacrylate reacting
monomers to fabricate DN-LCEs, some of which have the breaking stress
of 40 MPa. We incorporate thermoplastic polyurethane to fabricate
a DN-LCE, achieving an enormous ductility of 90 MJ/m3.
We have also attempted to utilize the aza-Michael chemistry to make
a DN-LCE that retains high plasticity because of several bond-exchange
mechanisms; however, it failed to produce a stable reprocessable LCE
system using conventional ester-based reactive mesogens. Each of these
DN-LCEs exhibits unique features and characteristics, which are compared
and discussed.

Abstract
Green and sustainable cellulose-based composites containing poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with temperature-induced shape memory properties and conductivity performance are presented. The composites are fabricated by in situ polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) monomer in three-dimensional porous cellulose gels, and then silver-porous cellulose gel/poly(ε-caprolactone) (Ag-Cell/PCL) composites are fabricated by depositing Ag onto the surface of porous cellulose gel/poly(ε-caprolactone) (Cell/PCL) composites. The addition of PCL not only improves the mechanical properties of the Cell/PCL composites but also endows them with excellent shape memory properties. The Cell/PCL composites exhibit a high shape-fixing rate (98.9%) and can recover to their original shape within 8 s without external force. In addition, the Ag-Cell/PCL composites show superior and stable conductivity under different bending angles. Finally, a temperature warning sensor with fast performance is successfully designed using Ag-Cell/PCL composites. This work provides a means to develop temperature warning systems based on shape memory polymers.
