Characterization of Surface Patterning on Polymer-Grafted Nanocubes Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Force Volume Mapping

Atomic force microscopy (AFM), in particular force spectroscopy, is a powerful tool for understanding the supramolecular structures associated with polymers grafted to surfaces, especially in regimes of low polymer density where different morphological structures are expected. In this study, we utilize force volume mapping to characterize the nanoscale surfaces of Ag nanocubes (AgNCs) grafted with a monolayer of polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains. Spatially resolved force-distance curves taken for a single AgNC were used to map surface properties, such as adhesion energy and deformation. We confirm the presence of surface octopus micelles that are localized on the corners of the AgNC, using force curves to resolve structural differences between the micelle "bodies" and "legs". Furthermore, we observe unique features of this system including a polymer corona stemming from AgNC-substrate interactions and polymer bridging stemming from particle-particle interactions.

pH-Responsive, Wide Color Gamut Dynamic Color Display Enabled by PDMAEMA Brush-Based Fabry-Perot Resonant Cavity

Dynamic color-changing materials have attracted broad interest due to their widespread applications in visual sensing, dynamic color display, anticounterfeiting, and image encryption/decryption. In this work, we demonstrate a novel pH-responsive dynamic color-changing material based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with a pH-responsive poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brush layer as the responsive insulating layer. The pH-responsive PDMAEMA brush undergoes protonation at a low pH value (pH < 6), which induces different swelling degrees in response to pH and thus refractive index and thickness change of the insulator layer of the MIM FP cavity. This leads to significant optical property changes in transmission and a distinguishable color change spanning the whole visible region by adjusting the pH value of the external environment. Due to the reversible conformational change of the PDMAEMA and the formation of covalent bonds between the PDMAEMA molecular chain and the Ag substrate, the MIM FP cavity exhibits stable performance and good reproducibility. This pH-responsive MIM FP cavity establishes a new way to modulate transmission color in the full visible region and exhibits a broad prospect of applications in dynamic color display, real-time environment monitoring, and information encryption and decryption.

PNIPAM Brushes in Colloidal Photonic Crystals Enable Ex Situ Ethanol Vapor Sensing

Structural colors are formed by the periodic repetition of nanostructures in a material. Upon reversibly tuning the size or optical properties of the repetitive unit inside a nanostructured material, responsive materials can be made that change color due to external stimuli. This paper presents a simple method to obtain films of ethanol vapor-responsive structural colors based on stacked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-grafted silica nanoparticles. Our materials show clear, reversible color transitions in the presence of near-saturated ethanol vapor. Moreover, due to the absorption of ethanol in the PNIPAM brushes, relatively long recovery times are observed (∼30 s). Materials based on bare or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brush-grafted silica nanoparticles also change color in the presence of ethanol vapor but possess significantly shorter recovery times (∼1 s). Atomic force microscopy reveals that the delayed recovery originates from the ability of PNIPAM brushes to swell in ethanol vapor. This renders the films highly suitable for ex situ ethanol vapor sensing.

Predicting Polymer Brush Behavior in Solvents Using the Steepest-Entropy-Ascent Quantum Thermodynamic Framework

The steepest-entropy-ascent quantum thermodynamic (SEAQT) framework is utilized to study the effects of temperature on polymer brushes. The brushes are represented by a discrete energy spectrum, and energy degeneracies obtained through the replica-exchange Wang-Landau algorithm. The SEAQT equation of motion is applied to the density of states to establish a unique kinetic path from an initial thermodynamic state to a stable equilibrium state. The kinetic path describes the brush's evolution in state space, as it interacts with a thermal reservoir. The predicted occupation probabilities along the kinetic path are used to determine the expected thermodynamic and structural properties. The polymer density profile of a polystyrene brush in cyclohexane solvent is predicted using the equation of motion, and it agrees qualitatively with the experimental density profiles. The Flory-Huggins parameter chosen to describe brush-solvent interactions affects the solvent distribution in the brush but has a minimal impact on the polymer density profile. Three types of nonequilibrium kinetic paths with differing amounts of entropy production are considered: a heating path, a cooling path, and a heating-cooling path. Properties such as tortuosity, radius of gyration, brush density, solvent density, and brush chain conformations are calculated for each path.

Preparation of Crosslinked Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-Grafted Deproteinized Natural Rubber/Silica Composites as Coating Materials for Controlled Release of Fertilizer

The crosslinked poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)-grafted deproteinized natural rubber/silica ((PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR/silica) composites were prepared and applied as coating materials for fertilizer in this work. The crosslinked (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR was prepared via emulsion graft copolymerization in the presence of MBA as a crosslinking agent. The modified DPNR was mixed with various contents of silica (10 to 30 phr) to form the composites. The existence of crosslinked (PAA-co-PAM) after modification provided a water adsorption ability to DPNR. The swelling degree values of composites were found in the range of 2217.3 ± 182.0 to 8132.3 ± 483.8%. The addition of silica in the composites resulted in an improvement in mechanical properties. The crosslinked (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR with 20 phr of silica increased its compressive strength and compressive modulus by 1.61 and 1.55 times compared to the unloaded silica sample, respectively. There was no breakage of samples after 80% compression strain. Potassium nitrate, a model fertilizer, was loaded into chitosan beads with a loading percentage of 40.55 ± 1.03% and then coated with the modified natural rubber/silica composites. The crosslinked (PAA-co-PAM)-DPNR/silica composites as the outer layers had the ability of holding water in their structure and retarded the release of fertilizer. These composites could be promising materials for controlled release and water retention that would have potential for agricultural application.

Electrostatic Fields Stimulate Absorption of Small Neutral Molecules in Gradient Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Molecules can partition from a solution into a polymer coating, leading to a local enrichment. If one can control this enrichment via external stimuli, one can implement such coatings in novel separation technologies. Unfortunately, these coatings are often resource intensive as they require stimuli in the form changes of bulk solvent conditions such as acidity, temperature, or ionic strength. Electrically driven separation technology may provide an appealing alternative, as this will allow local, surface-bound stimuli instead of system-wide bulk stimuli to induce responsiveness. Therefore, we investigate via coarse grained molecular dynamics simulations the possibility of using coatings with charged moieties, specifically gradient polyelectrolyte brushes, to control the enrichment of the neutral target molecules near the surface with applied electric fields. We find that targets which interact more strongly with the brush show both more absorption and a larger modulation by electric fields. For the strongest interactions evaluated in this work, we obtained absorption changes of over 300 % between the collapsed and extended state of the coating.

Enhanced vapor sorption in block and random copolymer brushes

Polymer brushes in gaseous environments absorb and adsorb vapors of favorable solvents, which makes them potentially relevant for sensing applications and separation technologies. Though significant amounts of vapor are sorbed in homopolymer brushes at high vapor pressures, at low vapor pressures sorption remains limited. In this work, we vary the structure of two-component polymer brushes and investigate the enhancement in vapor sorption at different relative vapor pressures compared to homopolymer brushes. We perform molecular dynamics simulations on two-component block and random copolymer brushes and investigate the influence of monomer miscibility and formation of high-energy interfaces between immiscible monomers on vapor sorption. Additionally, we present absorption isotherms of pure homopolymer, mixed binary brush and 2-block, 4-block, and random copolymer brushes. Based on these isotherms, we finally show that random copolymer brushes absorb more vapor than any other architecture investigated thus far. Random brushes display enhanced sorption at both high and low vapor pressures, with the largest enhancement in sorption at low vapor pressures.

Vapor Swelling of Polymer Brushes Compared to Nongrafted Films

Polymer brushes, coatings of polymers covalently end-grafted to a surface, have been proposed as a more stable alternative to traditional physisorbed coatings. However, when such coatings are applied in settings such as vapor sensing and gas separation technologies, their responsiveness to solvent vapors becomes an important consideration. It can be anticipated that the end-anchoring in polymer brushes reduces the translational entropy of the polymers and instead introduces an entropic penalty against stretching when vapor is absorbed. Therefore, swelling can be expected to be diminished in brushes compared to nongrafted films. Here, we study the effect of the anchoring-constraint on vapor sorption in polymer coatings using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations as well as humidity-controlled ellipsometry on chemically identical polymer brushes and nongrafted films. We find a qualitative agreement between simulations and experiments, with both indicating that brushes certainly swell less than physisorbed films, although this effect is minor for common grafting densities. Our results imply that polymer brushes indeed hold great potential for the intended applications.

Fundamentals and Applications of Polymer Brushes in Air

For several decades, high-density, end-tethered polymers, forming so-called polymer brushes, have inspired scientists to understand their properties and to translate them to applications. While earlier research focused on polymer brushes in liquids, it was recently recognized that these brushes can find application in air as well. In this review, we report on recent progress in unraveling fundamental concepts of brushes in air, such as their vapor-swelling and solvent partitioning. Moreover, we provide an overview of the plethora of applications in air (e.g., in sensing, separations or smart adhesives) where brushes can be key components. To conclude, we provide an outlook by identifying open questions and issues that, when solved, will pave the way for the large scale application of brushes in air.

Vapor sorption in binary polymer brushes: The effect of the polymer-polymer interface

Polymer brushes attract vapors that are good solvents for polymers. This is useful in sensing and other technologies that rely on concentrating vapors for optimal performance. It was recently shown that vapor sorption can be enhanced further by incorporating two incompatible types of polymers A and B in the brushes: additional vapor adsorbs at the high-energy polymer-polymer interface in these binary brushes. In this article, we present a model that describes this enhanced sorption in binary brushes of immiscible A-B polymers. To do so, we set up a free-energy model to predict the interfacial area between the different polymer phases in binary brushes. This description is combined with Gibbs adsorption isotherms to determine the adsorption at these interfaces. We validate our model with coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Moreover, based on our results, we propose design parameters (A-B chain fraction, grafting density, vapor, and A-B interaction strength) for optimal vapor absorption in coatings composed of binary brushes.

Concentrating Vapor Traces with Binary Brushes of Immiscible Polymers

Vapors in the air around us can provide useful information about our environment, but we need sensitive vapor sensors to access this information, especially because those vapors are often present at very low concentrations. We report molecular dynamics simulations of a concept that can significantly increase the sensitivity of vapor sensors at low concentrations. By coating the sensor surfaces with end-anchored immiscible polymers, surface-bound polymer blends are formed that can concentrate vapors, reaching sorption enhancements of more than one order of magnitude, especially at low vapor concentrations.

Friends, Foes, and Favorites: Relative Interactions Determine How Polymer Brushes Absorb Vapors of Binary Solvents

Polymer brushes can absorb vapors from the surrounding atmosphere, which is relevant for many applications such as in sensing and separation technologies. In this article, we report on the absorption of binary mixtures of solvent vapors (A and B) with a thermodynamic mean-field model and with grand-canonical molecular dynamics simulations. Both methods show that the vapor with the strongest vapor-polymer interaction is favored and absorbs preferentially. In addition, the absorption of one vapor (A) influences the absorption of another (B). If the A-B interaction is stronger than the interaction between vapor B and the polymers, the presence of vapor A in the brush can aid the absorption of B: the vapors absorb collaboratively as friends. In contrast, if the A-polymer interaction is stronger than the B-polymer interaction and the brush has reached its maximum sorption capacity, the presence of A can reduce the absorption of B: the vapors absorb competitively as foes.

Swelling of Poly(methyl acrylate) Brushes in Acetone Vapor

Sensor platforms can benefit from the incorporation of polymer brushes since brushes can concentrate the analyte near the sensor surface. Brushes that absorb acetone vapor are of particular interest since acetone is an important marker for biological processes. We present a simple procedure to synthesize acetone-responsive poly(methyl acrylate) brushes. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we show that these brushes respond within seconds and swell by more than 30% when exposed to acetone vapor. Moreover, quartz crystal microbalance measurements demonstrate that the brushes can be exploited to increase the acetone detection sensitivity of sensors by more than a factor 6. Surprisingly, we find that the swelling ratio of the brushes in acetone vapor is independent of the grafting density and the degree of polymerization of the polymers in the brush. This is qualitatively different from swelling of the same brushes in liquid environments, where the swelling ratio decreases for increasing grafting densities. Yet, it indicates that the brushes are robust and reproducible candidates for implementation in vapor sensor systems.

Sorption Characteristics of Polymer Brushes in Equilibrium with Solvent Vapors

While polymer brushes in contact with liquids have been researched intensively, the characteristics of brushes in equilibrium with vapors have been largely unexplored, despite their relevance for many applications, including sensors and smart adhesives. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to show that solvent and polymer density distributions for brushes exposed to vapors are qualitatively different from those of brushes exposed to liquids. Polymer density profiles for vapor-solvated brushes decay more sharply than for liquid-solvated brushes. Moreover, adsorption layers of enhanced solvent density are formed at the brush–vapor interface. Interestingly and despite all of these effects, we find that solvent sorption in the brush is described rather well with a simple mean-field Flory–Huggins model that incorporates an entropic penalty for stretching of the brush polymers, provided that parameters such as the polymer–solvent interaction parameter, grafting density, and relative vapor pressure are varied individually.

Film Properties and Antimicrobial Efficacy of Quaternized PDMAEMA Brushes: Short vs Long Alkyl Chain Length

Quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brushes bearing quaternary ammonium groups of different alkyl chain lengths (ACLs) were prepared and assessed as biocidal coatings. For the synthesis of the antimicrobial brushes, first well-defined PDMAEMA chains were grown by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on glass and silicon substrates. Next, the tertiary amine groups of the polymer brushes were modified via a quaternization reaction, using alkyl halides, to obtain the cationic polymers. The polymer films were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurements. The effect of the ACL of the quaternary ammonium groups on the physicochemical properties of the films as well as the contact killing efficiency of the surfaces against representative Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was investigated. A hydrophilic to hydrophobic transition of the surfaces and a significant decrease of the degree of quaternization of the DMAEMA moieties was found upon increasing the ACL of the quaternization agent above six carbon atoms, allowing the wettability, the thickness, and the pH-response of the brushes to be tuned via a facile postpolymerization, quaternization reaction. At the same time, antimicrobial tests revealed that the hydrophilic polymer brushes exhibited enhanced bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus, whereas the hydrophobic surfaces showed a significant deterioration of the in vitro bactericidal performance. Our results elucidate the antimicrobial action of quaternized polymer brushes, dictating the appropriate choice of the ACL of the quaternization agent for the development of coatings that effectively inhibit biofilm formation on surfaces.

Charge Density Gradients of Polymer Thin Film by Gaseous Phase Quaternization

We report on the rapid formation of charge density gradients in polymer films by exposing poly([2-dimethylaminoethyl] methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) films resting on flat silica substrates to methyl iodide (i.e., MI, also known as iodomethane) vapors. We adjust the charge gradient by varying the MI concentration in solution and the process time. The thickness of the parent PDMAEMA film does not affect the diffusion of MI through and the reaction kinetics in the films. Instead, the diffusion of MI through the gaseous phase constitutes the limiting step in the overall process.

Fabrication of topologically anisotropic microparticles and their surface modification with pH responsive polymer brush

This paper describes the fabrication of topologically anisotropic cup shaped polylactide (PLA)/poly[methyl methacrylate‑co‑2‑(2‑bromopropionyloxy) ethyl methacrylate] (poly(MMA-co-BEMA)) (75/25) composite particles of ~6 μm size using electrojetting technique. An attempt was made to understand the mechanism of cup shape formation from the miscible blend by electrojetting. Both the solution parameters and the processing conditions affected the particles' shape which can be varied from cup shaped to discoid type. Surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of stimuli responsive DMAEMA (2‑dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate) was subsequently carried out for 1 h onto the surface of cup shaped particles to observe pH responsiveness of the modified anisotropic particles. Interestingly, morphology of the cup shaped particles was changed to elongated cup which did show significant swelling under acidic pH (swelling ratio:~1.6) and enhanced dye adsorption at specific pH as observed by optical microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope implying that DMAEMA polymerization happened onto the surface of the composite microparticles. The Raman microscopy and FTIR spectra obtained from the particles after polymerization further confirmed the immobilization of pH responsive poly(DMAEMA) brushes onto the cup shaped particles which may potentially function as triggered/targeted drug delivery vehicles. Moreover, the brush modified cup shaped particles were found to be two times more efficient in adsorbing dye compared to disc shaped one indicating a clear advantage of using cup shaped particles over other shapes for immobilizing/adsorbing charged species e.g. sensitive biomolecules.

Brush Swelling and Attachment Strength of Barnacle Adhesion Protein on Zwitterionic Polymer Films as a Function of Macromolecular Structure

The exceptional hydration of sulfobetaine polymer brushes and their resistance toward nonspecific protein absorption allows for the construction of thin films with excellent antibiofouling properties. In this work, swollen sulfobetaine brushes, prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of two monomers, differentiated by the nature of the polymerizable group, are studied and compared by a liquid-cell atomic force microscopy technique and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Colloidal AFM-based force spectroscopy is employed to estimate brush grafting density and characterize nanomechanical properties in salt water. When the ionic strength-induced swelling behaviors of the two systems are compared, the differences observed on the antipolyelectrolyte response can be correlated with the stiffness variation on brush compression, likely to be promoted by solvation differences. The higher solvation of amide groups is proposed to be responsible for the lower adhesion force of the barnacle cyprid's temporary adhesive proteins. The adhesion results provide further insights into the antibiofouling activity against barnacle cyprid settlement attributed to polysulfobetaine brushes.

Time Evolution of Precursor Thin Film of Water on Polyelectrolyte Brush

The microscopic wetting behavior of a water film on the line-patterned surface of a polyelectrolyte brush was directly visualized using an optical microscope by dyeing procedures. Surface line patterns of 5 and 5 μm width or 10 and 5 μm width for the polyelectrolyte brush and hydrophobic monolayer, respectively, were prepared by a photolithography process, chemical vapor adsorption method, and surface-initiated polymerization. A droplet of water containing dye was placed on the line-patterned surface. In front of the contact line, a water film with a nanometer-scale thickness, referred to as a precursor film, elongated along the polymer brush line with time. The elongation velocity at the first stage increased as the brush line width increased. On the other hand, at the second stage after the macroscopic contact line stopped moving, the precursor film continued to elongate in proportion to the 0.6 power of time, independent of the brush thickness, line width, and droplet volume.

Thermo-responsive gels that absorb moisture and ooze water

The water content of thermo-responsive hydrogels can be drastically altered by small changes in temperature because their polymer chains change from hydrophilic to hydrophobic above their low critical solution temperature (LCST). In general, such smart hydrogels have been utilized in aqueous solutions or in their wet state, and no attempt has been made to determine the phase-transition behavior of the gels in their dried states. Here we demonstrate an application of the thermo-responsive behavior of an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) gel comprising thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and hydrophilic sodium alginate networks in their dried states. The dried IPN gel absorbs considerable moisture from air at temperatures below its LCST and oozes the absorbed moisture as liquid water above its LCST. These phenomena provide energy exchange systems in which moisture from air can be condensed to liquid water using the controllable hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of thermo-responsive gels with a small temperature change.

Most smart hydrogels are used in their wet state and determination of their phase transition behaviour in the dried state is lacking. Here the authors investigate the thermo-responsive behaviour of an interpenetrating polymer network gel comprising of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and sodium alginate networks in their dried states.

Swelling of Thin Poly(ethylene glycol)-Containing Hydrogel Films in Water Vapor-A Neutron Reflectivity Study

Hydrogels are widely used in biomedicine and for bioanalytical purposes, normally under wet conditions. For certain applications, processing steps, or process monitoring, hydrogel films are used or treated under ambient conditions, and because they are hygroscopic, it is of interest to investigate how they respond to changes in atmospheric humidity. We have used neutron reflectometry to follow the swelling of thin UV-polymerized hydrogel films in air under different relative humidities (RHs). These polymers were prepared to similar thicknesses on silica and gold substrates, and the chemical similarity between them was verified by infrared spectroscopy. The swelling in response to variations in RH was different for the layers on the two substrate types, reflecting structural changes induced by differences in the UV exposure required to achieve a given polymer thickness, as demonstrated also by differences in the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, obtained by fitting a Flory-Huggins-type sorption model to the swelling data. Wetting studies show small changes in contact angles with surrounding humidity variations, indicating that structural reorganization at the interface in response to humidity changes is limited.

Effect of Network Density in Surface-Anchored Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogels on Adsorption of Fibrinogen

We describe a simple approach to generate surface-attached biocompatible hydrogels with tunable cross-link density and employ them to study the effect of gel structure on protein adsorption. Using free-radical polymerization, we synthesize a series of random copolymers comprising N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and the photoactive curing agent 4-methacryloyl-oxy-benzophenone (MABP) of mole fractions ranging from 2.5 to 10%. We deposit a thin film of the precursor copolymer (∼150 nm) on a silicon or glass substrate, which is precoated with monolayers of benzophenone-silane, then cross-link it through UV irradiation at 365 nm (dose ≈ 6-10 J/cm²) to generate surface-attached networks. A systematic investigation of the network properties such as gel fraction, cross-link density, and swelling ratio reveals that gels with higher MABP content (≥5%) produce densely cross-linked hydrophobic networks with low or no swelling in an aqueous medium. We study the adsorption of fibrinogen (Fg) on such hydrogel substrates and establish that the amount of adsorbed Fg depends on the degree of cross-linking and the swelling capacity of the networks. Specifically, although Fg adsorbs heavily on denser networks, loosely bound gels that swell in aqueous medium repel proteins. We attribute the latter behavior to entropic shielding and size-exclusion factors.
