Enhancing Optoelectronic Properties of Conjugated Block Copolymers through Crystallization of Both Blocks

Diblock copolymer pattern protection by silver cluster reinforcement

Pattern fabrication by self-assembly of diblock copolymers is of significant interest due to the simplicity in fabricating complex structures. In particular, polystyrene-block-poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS-b-P4VP) is a fascinating base material as it forms an ordered micellar structure on silicon surfaces. In this work, silver (Ag) is applied using direct current magnetron sputter deposition and high-power impulse magnetron sputter deposition on an ordered micellar PS-b-P4VP layer. The fabricated hybrid materials are structurally analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering. When applying simple aqueous posttreatment, the pattern is stable and reinforced by Ag clusters, making micellar PS-b-P4VP ordered layers ideal candidates for lithography.

Correlating Optical Reflectance with the Topology of Aluminum Nanocluster Layers Growing on Partially Conjugated Diblock Copolymer Templates

Large-scale fabrication of metal cluster layers for usage in sensor applications and photovoltaics is a huge challenge. Physical vapor deposition offers large-scale fabrication of metal cluster layers on templates and polymer surfaces. In the case of aluminum (Al), only little is known about the formation and interaction of Al clusters during sputter deposition. Complex polymer surface morphologies can tailor the deposited Al cluster layer. Here, a poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(3-hexylthiophen-2,5-diyl) (PMMA-b-P3HT) diblock copolymer template is used to investigate the nanostructure formation of Al cluster layers on the different polymer domains and to compare it with the respective homopolymers PMMA and P3HT. The optical properties relevant for sensor applications are monitored with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) measurements during the sputter deposition. The formation of Al clusters is followed in situ with grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), and the chemical interaction is revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) yield topographical information about selective wetting of Al on the P3HT domains and embedding in the PMMA domains in the early stages, followed by four distinct growth stages describing the Al nanostructure formation.

Revealing the Side-Chain-Dependent Ordering Transition of Highly Crystalline Double-Cable Conjugated Polymers

We developed a series of highly crystalline double-cable conjugated polymers for application in single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs). These polymers contain conjugated backbones as electron donor and pendant perylene bisimide units (PBIs) as electron acceptor. PBIs are connected to the backbone via alkyl units varying from hexyl (C₆ H₁₂ ) to eicosyl (C₂₀ H₄₀ ) as flexible linkers. For double-cable polymers with short linkers, the PBIs tend to stack in a head-to-head fashion, resulting in large d-spacings (e.g. 64 Å for the polymer P12 with C₁₂ H₂₄ linker) along the lamellar stacking direction. When the length of the linker groups is longer than a certain length, the PBIs instead adopt a more ordered packing likely via H-aggregation, resulting in short d-spacings (e.g. 50 Å for the polymer P16 with C₁₆ H₃₂ linker). This work highlights the importance of linker length on the molecular packing of the acceptor units and the influences on the photovoltaic performance of SCOSCs.

Role of thiol oxidation by air in the mechanism of the self-initiated thermal thiol–ene polymerization

We highlight the role of thiyl initiating radicals generated by air oxidation of thiols in the mechanism accounting for the self-initiation of thiol–ene polymerization. The driving force of this reaction is polarization of the S–H bond.

Droplet nucleation in miniemulsion thiol–ene step photopolymerization

Reaction parameters, such as droplet size, initiator solubility and monomer solubility, which are important in favouring droplet nucleation in a miniemulsion thiol–ene step polymerization are reviewed.

Cocrystallization-Promoted Charge Mobility in All-Conjugated Diblock Copolymers for High-Performance Field-Effect Transistors

The cocrystallization method that combines various constituents into cocrystals yields the newly formed materials with significantly enhanced charge transport properties. However, this strategy has not been greatly utilized in all-conjugated block copolymers (BCPs). Herein, we scrutinize the relationship between cocrystals and charge mobilities in all-conjugated BCPs (i.e., poly(3-butylthiophene)-block-poly(3-hexylthiophene); denoted P3BT-b-P3HT) by tuning their molecular weights and thermal annealing process. All the rod-rod BCPs form cocrystals with high charge mobilities than P3BT and P3HT homopolymers and P3BT/P3HT blend, imparting the cocrystal-facilitated charge transport because of the synergy of two conjugated components. Upon 150 °C treatment, their crystallinities increase and their charge mobilities at 15k, 18k, and 28k increase slightly. In contrast, P3BT-b-P3HT-12k shows decreased charge mobilities. It is due to the preferential increase of crystal size and order through the π-π stacking direction in the former while through the alkyl stacking direction in the latter. Intriguingly, when these P3BT-b-P3HT cocrystals experience two-step thermal treatment, P3BT-b-P3HT-12k retains its cocrystalline structure, while microphase separation of P3BT and P3HT occurs in P3BT-b-P3HT-15k, 18k, and 28k with different degrees. All P3BT-b-P3HT BCPs exhibit decreased charge mobilities. This study demonstrates the cocrystallization-promoted charge mobility in all-conjugated BCPs, which may facilitate their application in a wide range of optoelectronic devices.
