One-Pot Benzo[b]phosphole Synthesis through Sequential Alkyne Arylmagnesiation, Electrophilic Trapping, and Intramolecular Phospha-Friedel–Crafts Cyclization

Advancement in Synthetic Strategies of Phosphorus Heterocycles: Recent Progress from Synthesis to Emerging Class of Optoelectronic Materials

Organophosphorus heterocycles have long been acknowledged for their significant potential across diverse fields, including catalysis, material science, and drug development. Incorporating phosphorus functionalities into organic compounds offers a means to effectively tailor their medicinal properties, augment biological responses, and enhance selectivity and bioavailability. The distinctive physical and photoelectric characteristics of phosphorus-containing conjugated compounds have garnered considerable interest as promising materials for organic optoelectronics. These compounds find extensive utility in various applications such as light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic cells, phosphole-based fluorophores, and semiconductors.

Synthesis and properties of photoluminescent phosphorus-doped triptycenes

A new class of phosphorus-doped triptycenes was designed and synthesized via a Diels-Alder reaction between alkynylphosphonates and anthracene, followed by oxidative cyclization. The packing interaction and molecular alignment in the single crystals revealed that the weak C-H⋯π (2.825 Å) interaction guides the self-assembly of phosphindole oxide iptycenes. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these photoluminescent phosphorus-doped iptycenes were characterized to gain a deeper understanding of their fluorescence tunability. The presence of functional groups on the phenyl ring of the P-doped fin and the chemical environment of the P atom both had an effect on the fluorescence emission.

Benzophosphol-3-yl Triflates as Precursors of 1,3-Diarylbenzophosphole Oxides

A simple method for the synthesis of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides under Suzuki-Miyaura coupling conditions has been presented. It employs benzophosphol-3-yl triflate starting materials which, prior to our work, had not been used for the synthesis of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides. The reactions proceed over 24 h and provide a library of 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides. The synthetic access to the benzophosphol-3-yl triflates has been improved. The preliminary photophysical properties of some 3-arylbenzophosphole oxides have been investigated by absorption and emission measurements. The theoretical calculations were performed to establish structure-property relationships.

Palladium-catalysed C–H arylation of benzophospholes with aryl halides

A palladium-catalysed C–H arylation of benzophospholes with aryl halides has been developed. The reaction with aryl iodides and bromides proceeds well even under phosphine ligand-free Pd(OAc)₂ catalysis whereas the Pd(PCy₃)₂ is effective for the coupling with less reactive aryl chlorides. The optimal conditions are also applicable to the double arylations with organic dihalides and annulation reaction with ortho-dihalogenated benzenes, making the corresponding benzophosphole-based acceptor–donor–acceptor-type molecules and highly condensed heteroacene-type molecules of potent interest in materials chemistry. Although there are many reports of catalytic C–H functionalisations of related benzoheteroles such as indoles, benzothiophenes, and benzofurans, this is the first successful example of the catalytic direct C–H transformation of benzophospholes, to the best of our knowledge. The preliminary optoelectronic properties of some newly synthesized benzophosphole derivatives are also investigated.

The Formation of P-C Bonds Utilizing Organozinc Reagents for the Synthesis of Aryl- and Heteroaryl-Dichlorophosphines

Aryl- and heteroaryl-dichlorophosphines are mildly and selectively made in a one-pot synthesis in moderate to good yields starting from the respective aryl bromides or five-membered heterocycles, following lithiation with nBuLi, transmetalation with ZnCl₂, and subsequently the reaction with PCl₃. Selected aryl- and heteroaryl-dichlorophosphines were successfully synthesized using this reaction method and could easily be purified after isolation. The intermediate formation of the organozinc species is essential, as it prevents the formation of multiple substitution products. Important are also the reaction conditions: the usage of the proper solvent for the respective aromatic precursors and removal of the remaining salts by addition of a dioxane/pentane mixture. Depending on the solvent and steric demand of the substituent, mono- and bis-substitution products can be formed but formation also prevented. Hereby, different organozinc species might play an important role.

Visible-Light-Induced Oxidative C-H Functionalization of Unreactive Cycloalkanes, Alcohols, and Ethers with Alkynylphosphine Oxides into Benzo[b]phosphole Oxides under Photocatalyst-, Metal-, and Base-Free Conditions

We developed the radical cyclization/addition of alkynylphosphine oxides with easily available cycloalkanes, alcohols, and ethers using a visible-light and environmentally friendly synthetic strategy in the absence of photocatalyst at room temperature. This mild and metal- and base-free reaction provided a structurally varied set of significant benzo[b]phosphole oxides through sequential C-H functionalization in an atom-economical manner.

The hetero-Friedel-Crafts-Bradsher Cyclizations with Formation of Ring Carbon-Heteroatom (P, S) Bonds, Leading to Organic Functional Materials

The interest in functional materials possessing improved properties led to development of new methods of their synthesis, which allowed to obtain new molecular arrangements with carbon and heteroatom motifs. Two of the classical reactions of versatile use are the Friedel-Crafts and the Bradsher reactions, which in the new heteroatomic versions allow to replace ring carbon atoms by heteroatoms. In the present work, we review methods of synthesis of C-S and C-P bonds utilizing thia- and phospha-Friedel-Crafts-Bradsher cyclizations. Single examples of C-As and lack of C-Se bond formation, involving two of the closest neighbors of P and S in the periodic table, have also been noted. Applications of the obtained π-conjugated molecules, mainly as semiconducting materials, flame retardants, and resins hardeners, designed on the basis of five- and six-membered cyclic molecules containing ring phosphorus and sulfur atoms, are also included. This comprehensive review covers literature up to August 2020.

Mechanistic details of metal-free cyclization reaction of organophosphorus oxide with alkynes mediated by 2,6-lutidine and Tf2 O

Theoretical investigations have elucidated the mechanism of metal-free electrophilic phosphinative cyclization of alkynes reaction reported by Miura and coworkers. Two competitive mechanisms I and II were explored without or with 2,6-lutidine. Both of I and II involve transformation of P(V) to P(III), electrophilic addition, ring opening and cyclization/cyclization, hydrogen-transfer, and oxidation. The rate-determining step of mechanism I and competitive less-step II is electrophilic [2 + 1] cycloaddition and electrophilic addition via single CP bond formation with activation barrier of 13.5 and 10.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Our calculation results suggested that the cumulative effect of the isomer of 2,6-lutidine and Tf₂ O as well as TfO^- affects the title reaction to some extent, and simultaneously activates key reaction sites and reverses the polarities of them via the formation of abundant noncovalent interactions to decrease activation barriers of TSs. In addition, the effects of two series substituents on reactivity of phosphine oxide were investigated. Therefore, our study will serve as useful guidance for more efficient metal-free synthesis of organophosphorus compounds mediated by pyridine reagents.

Azobisisobutyronitrile-Initiated Oxidative C-H Functionalization of Simple Alcohols with Diaryl(arylethynyl)phosphine Oxides: A Metal-Free Approach toward Hydroxymethyl Benzo[b]phosphole Oxides and 6H-Indeno[2,1-b]phosphindole 5-Oxide Derivatives

The first metal-free and facile radical addition/cyclization of simple alcohols with diaryl(arylethynyl)phosphine oxides has been described with azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator, affording an efficient and one-pot procedure to access a new class of hydroxymethyl benzo[b]phosphole oxides and 6H-indeno[2,1-b]phosphindole 5-oxides for potential application in organic materials via sequential C(sp³)-H/C(sp²)-H functionalization. The method employs easily accessible starting materials and is endowed with high regioselectivity and broad functional-group tolerance.

Synthesis of triphenylene-fused phosphole oxides via C-H functionalizations

The synthesis of triphenylene-fused phosphole oxides has been achieved through two distinct C–H functionalization reactions as key steps. The phosphole ring was constructed by a three-component coupling of 3-(methoxymethoxy)phenylzinc chloride, an alkyne, and dichlorophenylphosphine, involving the regioselective C–H activation of the C2 position of the arylzinc intermediate via 1,4-cobalt migration. The resulting 7-hydroxybenzo[b]phosphole derivative was used for further π-extension through Suzuki–Miyaura couplings and a Scholl reaction, the latter closing the triphenylene ring. The absorption and emission spectra of the thus-synthesized compounds illustrated their nature as hybrids of triphenylene and benzo[b]phosphole.

Synthesis of 3-phosphinoylbenzofurans via electrophilic phosphination cyclization

An expedient strategy for the synthesis of 3-phosphinoylbenzofurans through a cascade electrophilic phosphination cyclization has been presented.

Photoredox-catalyzed decarboxylative alkylation/cyclization of alkynylphosphine oxides: a metal- and oxidant-free method for accessing benzo[b]phosphole oxides

By photoredox-catalysis, alkylation/aryl cyclization of alkynylphosphine oxides towards benzo[b]phospholes has been realized under metal- and oxidant-free conditions at room temperature.

Regioselective functionalization at the 7-position of 1,2,3-triphenylbenzo[b]phosphole oxide via P[double bond, length as m-dash]O-directed lithiation

Various 7-substituted benzo[b]phosphole derivatives were prepared by P[double bond, length as m-dash]O-directed lithiation of 1,2,3-triphenylbenzo[b]phosphole P-oxide and subsequent iodination and cross-coupling reactions. The electron-donating groups introduced at the 7-position produced dramatic solvatofluorochromism owing to the strong charge-transfer character of the excited state of the entire π-system.

Versatile telluracycle synthesis via the sequential electrophilic telluration of C(sp2)-Zn and C(sp2)-H bonds

We report herein a new approach for the synthesis of tellurium-bridged aromatic compounds based on the sequential electrophilic telluration of C(sp2)-Zn and C(sp2)-H bonds with tellurium(iv) chlorides. A combination of transition metal-catalyzed (migratory) arylmetalation of alkynes and sequential telluration allows for the expedient construction of a library of functionalized benzo[b]tellurophenes. Furthermore, a variety of heteroarene-fused benzotellurophenes and other novel tellurium-embedded polycyclic aromatics can be readily synthesized from the corresponding 2-iodoheterobiaryls.

Recent developments in synthetic methods for benzo[b]heteroles

Benzo[b]heteroles containing heteroatoms other than nitrogen and oxygen have received considerable attention for their potential applications in materials science. This poses an increasing demand for efficient, selective, and broad-scope methods for their synthesis. This review article summarizes the recent developments in synthetic methods and approaches to access representative members of the benzoheterole family.
