Preserving High-Efficiency Luminescence Characteristics of an Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Fluorophore in Thermostable Amorphous Polymers

Recent Advances in Fluorescent Polyimides

Polyimide (PI) refers to a type of high-performance polymer containing imide rings in the main chain, which has been widely used in fields of aerospace, microelectronic and photonic devices, gas separation technology, and so on. However, traditional aromatic PIs are, in general, the inefficient fluorescence or even no fluorescence, due to the strong inter- and intramolecular charge transfer (CT) interactions causing unavoidable fluorescence quenching, which greatly restricts their applications as light-emitting functional layers in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. As such, the development of fluorescent PIs with high fluorescence quantum efficiency for their application fields in the OLED is an important research direction in the near future. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of fluorescent PIs as well as the methods to improve the fluorescence quantum efficiency of PIs. It is anticipated that this review will serve as a valuable reference and offer guidance for the design and development of fluorescent PIs with high fluorescence quantum efficiency, ultimately fostering further progress in OLED research.

Photoinduced Radical Persistent Luminescence in Semialiphatic Polyimide System with Temperature and Humidity Resistance

Organic persistent luminescence (pL) systems with photoresponsive dynamic features have valuable applications in the fields of data encryption, anticounterfeiting, and bioimaging. Photoinduced radical luminescent materials have a unique luminous mechanism with the potential to achieve dynamic pL. It is extremely challenging to obtain radical pL under ambient conditions; on account of it, it is unstable in air. Herein, a new semialiphatic polyimide-based polymer (A0) is developed, which can achieve dynamic pL through reversible conversion of radical under photoexcitation. A "joint-donor-spacer-acceptor" molecular design strategy is applied to effectively modulate the intramolecular charge-transfer and charge-transfer complex interactions, resulting in effective protection of the radical generated under photoirradiation. Meanwhile, polyimide-based polymers of A1-A4 are obtained by doping different amine-containing fluorescent dyes to modulate the dynamic afterglow color from green to red via the triplet to singlet Förster resonance energy-transfer pathway. Notably, benefiting from the structural characteristics of the polyimide-based polymer, A0-A4 have excellent processability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties and can be applied directly in extreme environments such as high temperatures and humidity.

Heat-Resistant and Color-Changing Luminescent Polysulfone for Information Encryption and Fire Alarming

An intrinsic difficulty with thermally responsive photoluminescent materials is that high temperatures usually destroy luminance due to the notorious thermal quenching effect. Limited by the vulnerable chemical structure and soft skeleton, most of the existing photoluminescent responsive materials fail to indicate or work at a surging temperature over 100 °C, thus limiting application in display and alarming in harsh conditions. Herein, enlightened by chameleon's adaptive nature to external stimulus, we introduce a topologically optimized electron donor-acceptor (DA) structure and supramolecular interactions of lanthanide ions into the polymer backbone. The emission color determined by the DA structure is stable at high temperatures, and metal-ligand interaction phosphorescence is temperature-adjustable. Owing to the excellent reproducibility and heat resistance of composite films, the sensors can be bent into different three-dimensional structures and adhered to metal surfaces as flexible thermometers with superior display resolution. The polymer composite film could be directly applied as a photoluminescent quick response (QR) code, with patterns simultaneously variable to a temperature from 30 to 150 °C free of manual operation. More importantly, the polymeric composite could be in-situ-oxidized to a "sulfone" structure with an enhanced glass transition temperature of 297-304 °C. The heat- and flame-resistant characteristics of the oxidized films give rise to the application of fire alarming devices since it can locate the fire source and respond exactly depending on the distance from the fire. The unique display, encryption, and alarming functions of the polymeric composite studied in this work bring forward a new concept of developing a great information security and disaster monitoring system with the application of temperature-responsive materials.

Benzoxazole-Based Hybridized Local and Charge-Transfer Deep-Blue Emitters for Solution-Processable Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and the In fluences of Hexahydrophthalimido

Hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) emitters have attracted extensive attention, but the insolubility and severe self-aggregation tendency restrict their applications in solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), particularly deep-blue OLEDs. Herein, two novel benzoxazole-based solution-processable HLCT emitters (BPCP and BPCPCHY) are designed and synthesized, in which benzoxazole acts as an acceptor, carbazole acts as a donor, and hexahydrophthalimido (HP, with a large intramolecular torsion angle and spatial distortion characteristics) acts as a bulky modified end-group with weak electron-withdrawing effects. Both BPCP and BPCPCHY exhibit HLCT characteristics and emit near ultraviolet in toluene at 404 and 399 nm. Compared to the BPCP, the BPCPCHY solid shows much better thermal stability (T_g, 187 vs 110 °C), higher oscillator strengths of the S₁-to-S₀ transition (0.5346 vs 0.4809), and faster k_r (1.1 × 10⁸ vs 7.5 × 10⁷ s^-1) and thus a much higher Φ_PL in the neat film. The introduction of HP groups greatly suppresses the intra-/intermolecular charge-transfer effect and self-aggregation trends, and the BPCPCHY neat films placed in air for 3 months can still maintain an excellent amorphous morphology. The solution-processable deep-blue OLEDs utilizing BPCP and BPCPCHY achieved a CIE_y of 0.06 with maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max) values of 7.19 and 8.53%, respectively, which are among the best results of the solution-processable deep-blue OLEDs based on the "hot exciton" mechanism. All of the above results indicate that benzoxazole is an excellent acceptor for constructing deep-blue HLCT materials, and the strategy of introducing HP as a modified end-group into an HLCT emitter provides a new perspective to develop solution-processable efficient deep-blue OLEDs with high morphological stability.

Cascade C-H-Activated Polyannulations toward Ring-Fused Heteroaromatic Polymers for Intracellular pH Mapping and Cancer Cell Killing

The development of straightforward and efficient synthetic methods toward ring-fused heteroaromatic polymers with attractive functionalities has great significance in both chemistry and materials science. Herein, we develop a facile cascade C-H-activated polyannulation route that can in situ generate multiple ring-fused aza-heteroaromatic polymers from readily available monomers in an atom-economical manner. A series of complex polybenzimidazole derivatives with high absolute molecular weights of up to 24 000 are efficiently produced in high yields within 2 h. Benefiting from their unique imidazole-containing ring-fused structures with multiple aryl pendants, the obtained polymers show excellent thermal and morphological stability, good solution processability, high refractive index, small chromic dispersion, as well as remarkable acid-base-responsive fluorescence. Taking advantage of the ratiometric fluorescence response of the triphenylamine-substituted heteroaromatic polymer to pH variations, we successfully apply it as a sensitive fluorescence probe for the mapping and quantitative analysis of intracellular pH in live cells. Furthermore, through the simple N-methylation reaction of the ring-fused polybenzimidazoles, diverse azonia-containing polyelectrolytes are readily produced, which can efficiently kill cancer cells via the synergistic effects of dark toxicity and phototoxicity.

Synthesis and Characterization of White-Light Luminescent End-Capped Polyimides Based on FRET and Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

N-cyclohexylphthalimide-substituted trifluoroacetylamino (CF₃CONH-) group (3TfAPI), which forms an intramolecular hydrogen bond, was synthesized, and it exhibited a bright yellow fluorescence owing to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in the solution and crystalline states. In addition, CF₃CONH-substituted phthalic anhydride (3TfAPA) was synthesized, which was attached to the termini of a blue-fluorescent semi-aromatic polyimide (PI) chain. Owing to the efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurring from the main chain to the termini and the suppression of deprotonation (anion formation) at the 3TfAPA moiety by H₂SO₄ doping, the resulting PI films display bright white fluorescence. Moreover, the enhancement of the chain rigidity by substituting the diamine moiety results in an increase in the quantum yield of white fluorescence (Φ) by a factor of 1.7, due to the suppression of local molecular motion. This material design strategy is promising for preparing thermally stable white-light fluorescent PIs applicable to solar spectral convertors, displays, and ICT devices.

Rigid Polyimides with Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence for Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes with High External Quantum Efficiency up to 21

A series of rigid nonconjugated polyimide (PI)-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) polymers were reported for the first time, based on a "TADF-Linker-Host" strategy. Among of which, the TADF unit contains a typical TADF luminous core structure, the "Host" unit exhibits effective conjugation length that endows polyimide with high triplet energy, and the "Linker" unit has an aliphatic ring structure to improve solubility and inhibits intramolecular charge transfer effect. All the TADF polymers exhibit high thermal stability (T_g >308.7 °C) and refractive index (1.76-1.79). Remarkably, highly-efficient polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) based on the polymers are successfully realized, leading to a maximal external quantum efficiency of 21.0 % along with low efficiency roll-off. Such outstanding efficiency is amongst the state-of-the-art performance of nonconjugated PLEDs, confirming the effectiveness of structural design strategy, providing helpful and valuable guidance on the development of highly-efficient fluorescent polymer materials and PLEDs.

Investigating the structure–fluorescence properties of tetraphenylethylene fused imidazole AIEgens: reversible mechanofluorochromism and polymer matrix controlled fluorescence tuning
