Modulating the Local Coordination Environment of Single-Atom Catalysts for Enhanced Catalytic Performance in Hydrogen/Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold the promise of utilizing 100% of the participating atoms in a reaction as active catalytic sites, achieving a remarkable boost in catalytic efficiency. Thus, they present great potential for noble metal-based electrochemical application systems, such as water electrolyzers and fuel cells. However, their practical applications are severely hindered by intrinsic complications, namely atom agglomeration and relocation, originating from the uncontrollably high surface energy of isolated single-atoms (SAs) during postsynthetic treatment processes or catalytic reactions. Extensive efforts have been made to develop new methodologies for strengthening the interactions between SAs and supports, which could ensure the desired stability of the active catalytic sites and their full utilization by SACs. This review covers the recent progress in SACs development while emphasizing the association between the regulation of coordination environments (e.g., coordination atoms, numbers, sites, structures) and the electrocatalytic performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The crucial role of coordination chemistry in modifying the intrinsic properties of SACs and manipulating their metal-loading, stability, and catalytic properties is elucidated. Finally, the future challenges of SACS development and the industrial outlook of this field are discussed.

A novel electrochemiluminescence immunosensing strategy fabricated by Co(OH)2 two-dimensional nanosheets and Ru@SiO2-Au NPs for the highly sensitive detection of enrofloxacin

In this work, a novel sensitive electrochemiluminescence immunosensor based on Ru@SiO₂-Au NPs and Co(OH)₂ two-dimensional nanosheets (2D Co(OH)₂) is constructed for the detection of enrofloxacin (ENR). Ruthenium bipyridine silica spheres and modified gold nanoparticles were synthesized as immune probe materials, which were combined with ENR antibodies (Abs) to form the immune probe part. 2D Co(OH)₂ with a large specific surface area and good catalytic effect was firstly used as an immune substrate material, and at the same time, it was conjugated with the coating antigen (Ae) of ENR to form an immune substrate. Based on the principle of competitive immunity, ENR and ENR coated antigen could jointly compete for the specific binding sites on the ENR antibody, so as to achieve efficient detection of ENR. Under optimal conditions, the prepared immunosensor exhibited high sensitivity with a wide linear range from 0.0001 to 1000 ng mL^-1 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.063 pg mL^-1. The proposed immunosensor has been successfully applied to the detection of ENR residues in poultry, aquatic products and lake water.

Structural Tuning of a Flexible and Porous Polypyrrole Film by a Template-Assisted Method for Enhanced Capacitance for Supercapacitor Applications

Constructing a rational electrode structure for supercapacitors is critical to accelerate the electrochemical kinetics process and thus promote the capacitance. Focusing on the flexible supercapacitor electrode, we synthesized a three-dimensional (3D) porous polypyrrole (PPy) film using a modified vapor phase polymerization method with the use of a porous template (CaCO₃). The porous design provided the PPy film with an improved surface area and pore volume. The porous PPy film electrode was studied as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. It was found that the abundant interpenetrated pores created by the CaCO₃ templates within the 3D framework are beneficial to overcoming the diffusion-controlled limit in the overall electrochemical process. It was revealed by electrochemical investigation that a more pseudocapacitive contribution than diffusion-controlled process contribution was observed in the total charge in the redox reaction. The galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) measurements showed that the optimized 3D porous PPy film electrode delivered a high capacitance of 313.6 F g^-1 and an areal capacitance of 98.0 mF cm^-2 at 1.0 A g^-1 in a three-electrode configuration, which is nearly three times that of the dense counterpart electrode synthesized in the absence of the CaCO₃ template. A specific capacitance of 62.5 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 and 31.1 F g^-1 at 10 A g^-1 was obtained in a symmetric capacitor device. In addition, the porous structure provided the PPy film with the attractive capability of accommodating the volume change during the doping/dedoping process. This is essential for the PPy film to maintain a long cycling life in a practical operation for a supercapacitor. It turned out that a high capacitance retention up to 81.3% after 10,000 GCD cycles was obtained for the symmetric supercapacitor device with the 3D porous PPy electrode (57.1% capacitive retention was observed for the dense PPy electrode). The strategy and the insight analysis are expected to provide valuable guidance for the design and the synthesis of flexible and wearable film electrodes with high performance.
