Tuning the Electronic Structure of CoP Embedded in N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanocubes Via Ru Doping for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

The interfacial synergy of hierarchical FeCoNiP@FeNi-LDH heterojunction for efficient alkaline water splitting

In response to the growing demand for clean, green, and sustainable energy sources, the development of cost-effective and durable high-activity overall water splitting electrocatalysts is urgently needed. In this study, the heterogeneous structure formed by the combination of FeCoNiP and FeNi-LDH was homogeneously dispersed onto CuO nanowires generated by in-situ oxidation of copper foam as a substrate using an electrodeposition method. This multilevel structure exhibits excellent bifunctional properties as an electrode material in alkaline solutions, for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) only 206 mV and 147 mV overpotentials are needed to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 respectively. Full water electrolysis is thus enabled to take place at such a low cell voltage as 1.64 V to reach the current density of 100 mA cm-2, which exhibits a long-term stability of 30 h. These improved electrocatalytic performances stem from the construction of multilevel structures. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that strong electron transfer occurs between heterogeneous structures, thus facilitating the OER and HER process. The dispersion of CuO nanowires not only increases the electrochemically active surface areas but also improves the overall hydrophilic and aerophobic properties. This work highlights the positive effect of multilevel structure in the design of more efficient electrocatalysts and provides a reference for the preparation of other low-cost, high-activity bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Superstructured Carbon with Enhanced Kinetics for Zinc-Air Battery and Self-Powered Overall Water Splitting

The present study proposes a novel engineering concept for the customization of functionality and construction of superstructure to fabricate 2D monolayered N-doped carbon superstructure electrocatalysts decorated with Co single atoms or Co2P nanoparticles derived from 2D bimetallic ZnCo-ZIF superstructure precursors. The hierarchically porous carbon superstructure maximizes the exposure of accessible active sites, enhances electron/mass transport efficiency, and accelerates reaction kinetics simultaneously. Consequently, the Co single atoms embedded N-doped carbon superstructure (Co-NCS) exhibits remarkable catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.886 V versus RHE. Additionally, the Co2P nanoparticles embedded N-doped carbon superstructure (Co2P-NCS) demonstrates high activity for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, delivering low overpotentials of 292 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 193 mV at 10 mA cm-2 respectively. Impressively, when employed in an assembled rechargeable Zn-air battery, the as-prepared 2D carbon superstructure electrocatalysts exhibit exceptional performance with a peak power density of 219 mW cm-2 and a minimal charge/discharge voltage gap of only 1.16 V at 100 mA cm-2. Moreover, the cell voltage required to drive an overall water-splitting electrolyzer at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 is merely 1.69 V using these catalysts as electrodes.

Dual-Functional Ru/Ni-B-P Electrocatalyst Toward Accelerated Water Electrolysis and High-Stability

Development of advanced electrocatalysts for the green hydrogen production by water electrolysis is an important task to reduce the climate and environmental issues as well as to meet the future energy demands. Herein, Ru/Ni-B-P sphere electrocatalyst is demonstrated by a combination of hydrothermal and soaking approaches, meeting the industrial requirement of low cell voltage with stable high-current operation. The Ru/Ni-B-P sphere catalyst demonstrates low overpotentials of 191 and 350 mV at 300 mA cm-2 with stable high current operation, ranking it as one of the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. The bifunctional 2-E system demonstrates a low cell voltage of 2.49 V at 2000 mA cm-2 in 6 m KOH at 60 °C of harsh industrial operation condition. It also demonstrates outstanding stability with continuous 120 h (5 days) CA operation at 1000 mA cm-2. Further, the hybrid configuration of Ru/Ni-B-P || Pt/C being paired with the conventional benchmark electrode demonstrates a record low 2-E cell voltage of 2.40 V at 2000 mA cm-2 in 6 m KOH and excellent stability at high current of 1500 mA cm-2 under industrial operational condition.

Heteroatom Doping Promoting CoP for Driving Water Splitting

CoP nanomaterials have been extensively regarded as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for overall water splitting due to their unique bifunctionality. Although the great promise for future applications, some important issues should also be addressed. Heteroatom doping has been widely acknowledged as a potential strategy for improving the electrocatalytic performance of CoP and narrowing the gap between experimental study and industrial applications. Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of heteroatom-doped CoP electrocatalysts for water splitting. Aiming to provide guidance for the future development of more effective CoP-based electrocatalysts, we herein organize a comprehensive review of this interesting field, with the special focus on the effects of heteroatom doping on the catalytic performance of CoP. Additionally, many heteroatom-doped CoP electrocatalysts for water splitting are also discussed, and the structure-activity relationship is also manifested. Finally, a systematic conclusion and outlook is well organized to provide direction for the future development of this interesting field.

Orange-peel derived carbon-loaded low content ruthenium nanoparticles as ultra-high performance alkaline water HER electrocatalysts

Carbon materials have a very wide range of applications in the field of electrocatalysis, both as catalyst bodies and as excellent supports for catalysts. In this work, we obtained a graphitic-like orange-peel derived carbon (OPC) material through pre-carbonization and KOH activation strategies using discarded orange-peel as a raw material. OPC has good graphitization characteristics and a few-layer structure, making it very suitable as a support for nanoparticle catalysts. In order to compare the performance of OPC, we used commercial graphene as the benchmark, made two carbon materials uniformly loaded with ruthenium nanoparticles under the same conditions, and obtained two HER catalysts (Ru/OPC and Ru/rGO). The results indicate that Ru/OPC has excellent HER catalytic performance under alkaline conditions, not only superior to Ru/rGO, but also surpassing commercial Pt/C. In 1 M KOH; the overpotential of Ru/OPC is only 3 mV at -10 mA cm-2, greatly exceeding those of Ru/rGO (100 mV) and Pt/C (31 mV). Under high current density (j), the performance of Ru/OPC is even better; the overpotential is 79 mV and 136 mV at -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively. More importantly, Ru/OPC also has a very high TOF and long-term stability, with a TOF of up to 10.62 H2 s-1 at an overpotential of 100 mV and almost no attenuation after 72 h of operation at -50 mA cm-2. Ru/OPC also exhibits good catalytic performance under acidic conditions, significantly superior to that of Ru/rGO. For Ru/OPC, the overpotential is 86 mV, 167 mV and 214 mV at -10 mA cm-2, -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively. Under the same conditions, the overpotential of Ru/rGO is 143 mV, 253 mV and 306 mV at -10 mA cm-2, -100 mA cm-2 and -200 mA cm-2, respectively.

In Situ Preparation of Polyamine-Derived Ru Cluster@N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanoplates for Hydrogen Evolution over Wide pH Ranges

Efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are required for producing hydrogen energy through water splitting. Carbon materials as HER catalyst supports are explored widely since the strong metal-support interactions are generally believed to be active and stable toward HER. Herein, we report N-doped porous carbon materials as novel substrates to stabilize the cluster metal sites through the Ru(III) polyamine complexes, which play an important role not only in efficient electron transfer but also in the increasing utilization of metallic active sites. Meanwhile, due to the strong metal-support interactions driven by Ru(III) polyamine complexes, the obtained Ru cluster with a mass loading of 3% on N-doped porous carbon nanoplates (Ru cluster@NCs) exhibits robust stability for HER at a constant voltage, proving to be a promising candidate catalyst for HER. Density functional theory calculations further indicate that the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) of adsorbed H* of Ru cluster@NCs is much closer to zero compared to Ru@(10%)NCs and Pt/C(20%), thus Ru cluster@NCs facilitate the HER process.

Robust cellulose fiber/fibrous sepiolite coated RuO2-CoP aerogel as monolithic catalyst for hydrogen generation via NaBH4 hydrolysis

Commercial carriers have been used to prepare monolithic NaBH₄ hydrolytic catalysts, but the fixed structure and material limit the application scope and design freedom. Herein, the RuO₂-CoP catalyst is coated on the surface of fibrous sepiolite (RuO₂-CoP@aSep) by in-situ deposition, annealing in air and phosphating, which is constructed into the aerogel with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by freeze drying process. The hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of RuO₂-CoP@aSep increases from 3655 to 10713mLmin^-1g_catalyst^-1 by adjusting the mass ratio of cobalt to ruthenium in RuO₂-CoP. Moreover, the optimized composite aerogel can get HGR (5268mLmin^-1g_catalyst^-1) by regulating its formulation, and the catalytic activity and mass loss rate of the aerogel maintains 76.6 and 0.92 % after five cycles of testing. The synergistic interaction between Ru and Co species, micro-nano porous structure, and structural coupling provide good catalytic activity and cycling performance, and show great potential in the design of controllable NaBH₄ hydrolyzed monolithic catalysts.

Tremella-Like Ni-NiO with O-Vacancy Heterostructure Nanosheets Grown In Situ on MXenes for Highly Efficient Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution

Electronic modulation via heterostructures or vacancies has been recently regarded as an effective strategy to improve electrocatalytic activity by optimizing the adsorption free energies of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) or oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active intermediates during the reaction. Herein, tremella-like Ni-NiO with O-vacancy heterostructure nanosheets grown in situ on Ti₃C₂T_x MXenes (Ni-NiO/Ti₃C₂T_x MXene) are fabricated via a facile strategy. Benefitting from the heterointerfaces between Ni and NiO, the synergetic coupling effects of MXenes and Ni-NiO heterostructures, the O-vacancies, and the unique architecture, the as-prepared Ni-NiO/Ti₃C₂T_x MXene showed superior activity toward the HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte, only requiring overpotentials of 72 mV for the HER and 248 mV for the OER to offer 10 mA cm^-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Ni-NiO with O-vacancies can effectively increase the electron density around the Fermi level and modulate the Gibbs free energies of the intermediates during catalytic reactions, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics.

Hollow-structured amorphous Cu(OH)x nanowires doped with Ru for wide pH electrocatalytic hydrogen production

Developing efficient and stable catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with low overpotential is the key point to realizing large-scale hydrogen commercialization. Herein, Ru doped amorphous hollow copper hydroxide nanowires on copper foam (Ru-Cu(OH)_x/CF) is prepared by surface chemical oxidization and following solvothermal process. The hollow 3D nanowire structure can provide abundant accessibility active sites, promote electrolyte in filtration and facilitate gas diffusion in the process of the electrochemical reaction. Then, the as-synthesized Ru-Cu(OH)_x/CF electrocatalyst exhibits impressive electrocatalytic performance for HER with 45, 80 and 50 mV to drive 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 0.5 M H₂SO₄, respectively, with remarkable long-term stability. Moreover, sustainable energies can power the two-electrode setup with amounts of hydrogen generation. The strategy may be particularly beneficial to explore simple synthesis and high-performance catalysts for HER.

Fe Engineering on Ru Nanosheets for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution in pH-Universal Media

Fe-modified Ru nanosheets are achieved via preintercalated Al species serving as the self-sacrificial template. Benefiting from the amphoteric feature of Al and strong corrosion of Fe³⁺ ions, Fe is effectively incorporated into pristine Ru nanosheets. Correspondingly, the surface oxophilicity is improved, promoting the Volmer step. The charge density redistribution weakens hydrogen combination on Ru and thus accelerates the desorption kinetics (Heyrovsky step). Meanwhile, more defective sites are exposed, leading to an enhanced hydrogen production in pH-universal electrolytes.

Ru doping boosts electrocatalytic water splitting

Heteroatom doping plays a crucial role in improving the electrocatalytic performance of catalysts towards water splitting. Owing to the existence of Ru-O moieties, Ru is thus emerging as an ideal dopant for promoting the electrocatalytic performance for water splitting by modifying the electronic structure, introducing extra active sites, improving electronic conductivity, and inducing a strong synergistic effect. Benefitting from these advantages, Ru-doped nanomaterials have been widely investigated and employed as advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting, and many excellent Ru-doped electrocatalysts have been successfully developed. In an effort to obtain a better understanding of the influence of Ru doping on the electrocatalytic water splitting performance of nanocatalysts, we herein summarize the recent progress of Ru-doped electrocatalysts by focusing on the synthesis strategies and advantageous merits. Applications of these new materials in water electrolysis technology are also discussed with emphasis on future directions in this active field of research.
