Advances in 2D Materials Based Gas Sensors for Industrial Machine Olfactory Applications

The escalating development and improvement of gas sensing ability in industrial equipment, or "machine olfactory", propels the evolution of gas sensors toward enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, stability, power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and longevity. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, distinguished by their atomic-thin profile, expansive specific surface area, remarkable mechanical strength, and surface tunability, hold significant potential for addressing the intricate challenges in gas sensing. However, a comprehensive review of 2D materials-based gas sensors for specific industrial applications is absent. This review delves into the recent advances in this field and highlights the potential applications in industrial machine olfaction. The main content encompasses industrial scenario characteristics, fundamental classification, enhancement methods, underlying mechanisms, and diverse gas sensing applications. Additionally, the challenges associated with transitioning 2D material gas sensors from laboratory development to industrialization and commercialization are addressed, and future-looking viewpoints on the evolution of next-generation intelligent gas sensory systems in the industrial sector are prospected.

Sensing nature's alarm: SnO2/MXene gas sensor unveils methyl jasmonate signatures of plant insect stress

The incorporation of artificial intelligence into agriculture presents challenges, particularly due to hardware limitations, especially in sensors. Currently, pest detection relies heavily on manual scouting by humans. Therefore, the objective of this study is to create a chemoresistive sensor that enables early identification of the characteristic volatile compound, viz., methyl jasmonate, released during pest infestations. Given the lower reactivity of esters, we have fine-tuned a composite consisting of SnO2 nanoparticles and 2D-MXene sheets to enhance adsorption and selective oxidation, resulting in heightened sensitivity. The optimized composite demonstrated a notable response even at concentrations as low as 120 ppb, successfully confirming pest infestations in tomato crops.

Ag Modified SnS2 Monolayer as a Potential Sensing Material for C4F7N Decompositions: A Density Functional Theory Study

As the field of 2D materials rapidly evolves, substances such as graphene, metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and MBenes have garnered extensive attention from scholars in the gas sensing domain due to their unique and superior properties. Based on first-principles calculations, this work explored the adsorption characteristics of both intrinsic and silver (Ag) doped tin disulfide (SnS2) toward the decomposition components of the insulating medium C4F7N (namely, CF4, C3F6, and COF2), encompassing the adsorption energy, charge transfer, density of state (DOS), band structure, and adsorption stability. The results indicated that Ag-doped SnS2 exhibited an effective and stable adsorption for C3F6 and COF2, whereas its adsorption for CF4 was comparatively weaker. Additionally, the potential for Ag-SnS2 in detecting C3F6 was highlighted, inferred from the contributions of the band gap variations. This research provides theoretical guidance for the application of Ag-SnS2 as a sensing material in assessing the operational status of gas-insulated equipment.

Trace Analysis of C4F7N Insulating Gas Mixtures by Spontaneous Raman Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography

2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl) propanenitrile (C4F7N) is being researched as an alternative to sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) for applications in gas-insulated switchgear. We independently assessed the effectiveness of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a novel method of feedback-assisted multipass cavity spontaneous Raman spectroscopy (SRS) for the trace quantification of impurities in C4F7N and its related byproducts. A total of 14 gases were identified with estimated concentrations as low as 20 ppm (ppm) for C3F6 using GC-MS and 7.4 ppm for CH4 using SRS and as high as 500 ppm for CF4 using GC-MS and 1430 ppm for CO using SRS. While GC-MS is highly effective in selectively detecting and quantifying trace contaminants, it necessitates separate detectors for various gases, such as CH4 and H2. SRS succeeded in detecting CF4 and C2F6 at concentrations of 465 and 100 ppm, respectively, and in placing an upper bound of several hundred ppm for the other analytes. Crucially, SRS holds potential for portability-and thus for field applications-in gas-insulated switchgear equipment diagnostics.

Insights into Selective Mechanism of NiO-TiO2 Heterojunction to H2 and CO

The construction of p-n heterojunctions has become a widely adopted strategy for achieving the selective detection of reducing gases, including H2 and CO. Nevertheless, the elucidation of the gas selectivity mechanism at the nanoscale remains elusive. First-principle calculations provide an attractive avenue for comprehending the influence of coordination structures on gas-sensitive selectivity, thereby unveiling the structure-activity relationship of p-n heterojunction sites. In this study, we investigate the selective adsorption behavior of H2 and CO on a NiO-TiO2 heterojunction using density functional theory. The results of d-band center analysis confirm that the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction with adsorbed oxygen significantly enhances the adsorption stability of reducing gases. Intriguingly, our calculations reveal that H2 has a higher affinity for adsorbed oxygen on the heterojunction surface compared to that of CO, corresponding to a lower H2 adsorption energy. Density of states (DOS) results indicate that the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction, with preadsorbed oxygen, exhibits ultrahigh selectivity with an n-type gas-sensitive response to H2, effectively eliminating the cross-sensitivity observed with CO, as confirmed by gas-sensitive characterization research. The sensing mechanism of the NiO-TiO2 heterojunction's selective detection of H2 without interference from CO can be visually explained by electron transfer and potential barrier changes, paving the way for future developments in novel, selective gas-sensitive materials.

V2CTX MXene-based hybrid sensor with high selectivity and ppb-level detection for acetone at room temperature

High-performance, room temperature-based novel sensing materials are one of the frontier research topics in the gas sensing field, and MXenes, a family of emerging 2D layered materials, has gained widespread attention due to their distinctive properties. In this work, we propose a chemiresistive gas sensor made from V₂CT_x MXene-derived, urchin-like V₂O₅ hybrid materials (V₂C/V₂O₅ MXene) for gas sensing applications at room temperature. The as-prepared sensor exhibited high performance when used as the sensing material for acetone detection at room temperature. Furthermore, the V₂C/V₂O₅ MXene-based sensor exhibited a higher response (S% = 11.9%) toward 15 ppm acetone than pristine multilayer V₂CT_x MXenes (S% = 4.6%). Additionally, the composite sensor demonstrated a low detection level at ppb levels (250 ppb) at room temperature, as well as high selectivity among different interfering gases, fast response-recovery time, good repeatability with minimal amplitude fluctuation, and excellent long-term stability. These improved sensing properties can be attributed to the possible formation of H-bonds in multilayer V₂C MXenes, the synergistic effect of the newly formed composite of urchin-like V₂C/V₂O₅ MXene sensor, and high charge carrier transport at the interface of V₂O₅ and V₂C MXene.
