Controllable Synthesis of PtIrCu Ternary Alloy Ultrathin Nanowires for Enhanced Ethanol Electrooxidation

Pd@PtRuNi core-shell nanowires as oxygen reduction electrocatalysts

Fuel cells, as the alternative to fossil energy, have engaged widespread attention by reason of the high conversion efficiency from the chemical energy to the electric energy combined with low pollution emissions. The cathodic ORR catalysts with excellent performance and cost-effectiveness are the dominant point towards the massive development of fuel cells. Here, our group select the Pd NWs as the template and construct the Pd@PtRuNi core-shell bilayer nanostructure to expand platinum atom utilization. Pd@PtRuNi bilayer core-shell NWs unfold elevated mass activity of1.62Amgmetal-1at 0.9 V versus RHE in alkaline media, 2.03- and 6.23-fold of pristine Pd NWs and benchmark commercial Pt/C, respectively. Meanwhile, the cyclic stability tests reveal the excellent durability of Pd@PtRuNi NWs, whose mass activity is only 13.58% degradation after accelerated durability tests. The catalytic activity and durability towards ORR are better than the U.S. 2025 DOE target (0.44Amgpt-1and less than 40% activity attenuation at 0.9 V after 30 000 potential cycles). The elevated catalytic properties can be traceable to the synergism between the ligand effect of Ni and Ru and one-dimensional structure superiority, which optimizes the electronic structure of active sites, promotes the charge transfer and restrains the agglomeration and detachment.

Phosphorus-Doped PdSn Nanocatalyst with Abundant Defective Atoms for Enhanced Methanol Oxidation

The design of the nanostructure of palladium-based nanocatalysts is considered to be a very effective way to improve the performance of nanocatalysts. Recent studies have shown that multiphase nanostructures can increase the active sites of palladium catalysts, thus effectively improving the catalytic efficiency of palladium atoms. However, it is difficult to regulate the phase structure of Pd nanocatalysts to form a compound phase structure. In this work, PdSnP nanocatalysts with different compositions were synthesized by fine-regulating the doping amount of phosphorus atoms. The results show that the doping of phosphorus atoms not only changes the composition of PdSn nanocatalysts but also changes the microstructure, forming amorphous and crystalline multiphase structures. This multiphase nanostructure contains abundant interfacial defects, which effectively promotes the electrocatalytic oxidation efficiency of Pd atoms in small-molecule alcohols. Compared with the undoped PdSn nanocatalyst (480 mA mg_Pd^-1 and 2.28 mA cm^-2) and the commercial Pd/C catalyst (397 mA mg_Pd^-1 and 1.15 mA cm^-2), the mass (1746 mA mg_Pd^-1) and specific activities (8.56 mA cm^-2) of PdSn_0.38P_0.05 nanocatalysts in the methanol oxidation reaction were increased by 3.6 and 3.8 times and 4.4 and 7.4 times, respectively. This study provides a new synthesis strategy for the design and synthesis of efficient palladium-based nanocatalysts for the oxidation of small-molecule alcohols.

Enhancing electrocatalytic methanol oxidation of Pd-Ir nanoalloy through electron-rich catalytic interface induced by incorporating phosphorus

Incorporating less expensive nonmetal phosphorus (P) into noble metal-based catalysts has become a developing strategy to enhance the catalytic performance of electrocatalysts for methanol electrooxidation reaction (MOR), attributing to the electronic and synergistic structure alteration mechanism. In the work, three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene anchoring ternary Pd-Ir-P nanoalloy catalyst (Pd₇IrP_x/NG) was prepared by co-reduction strategy. As a multi-electron system, elemental P adjusts the outer electron structure of Pd and diminishes the particle size of nanocomposites, which heightens the electrocatalytic activity effectively and accelerate MOR kinetics in alkaline medium. The study reveals that the electron effect and ligand effect induced by P atoms on the hydrophilic and electron-rich surface of Pd₇Ir/NG and Pd₇IrP_x/NG samples can reduce the initial oxidation potential and peak potential of CO_ads, showing significantly enhanced the anti-poisoning ability compared with commercial Pd/C as the benchmark. Meanwhile, the stability of Pd₇IrP_x/NG is significantly higher than that of commercial Pd/C. The facile synthetic approach provides an economic option and a new vision for the development of electrocatalysts in MOR.
