Optical Properties of Reconfigurable Polymer/Silver Nanoprism Hybrids: Tunable Color and Infrared Scattering Contrast

Learning and Predicting Photonic Responses of Plasmonic Nanoparticle Assemblies via Dual Variational Autoencoders

The application of machine learning is demonstrated for rapid and accurate extraction of plasmonic particles cluster geometries from hyperspectral image data via a dual variational autoencoder (dual-VAE). In this approach, the information is shared between the latent spaces of two VAEs acting on the particle shape data and spectral data, respectively, but enforcing a common encoding on the shape-spectra pairs. It is shown that this approach can establish the relationship between the geometric characteristics of nanoparticles and their far-field photonic responses, demonstrating that hyperspectral darkfield microscopy can be used to accurately predict the geometry (number of particles, arrangement) of a multiparticle assemblies below the diffraction limit in an automated fashion with high fidelity (for monomers (0.96), dimers (0.86), and trimers (0.58). This approach of building structure-property relationships via shared encoding is universal and should have applications to a broader range of materials science and physics problems in imaging of both molecular and nanomaterial systems.

Active control of equilibrium, near-equilibrium, and far-from-equilibrium colloidal systems

The development of top-down active control over bottom-up colloidal assembly processes has the potential to produce materials, surfaces, and objects with applications in a wide range of fields spanning from computing to materials science to biomedical engineering. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the field using a taxonomy based on how active control is used to guide assembly. We find there are three distinct scenarios: (1) navigating kinetic pathways to reach a desirable equilibrium state, (2) the creation of a desirable metastable, kinetically trapped, or kinetically arrested state, and (3) the creation of a desirable far-from-equilibrium state through continuous energy input. We review seminal works within this framework, provide a summary of important application areas, and present a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts of control theory that are necessary for the soft materials community to understand this literature. In addition, we outline current and potential future applications of actively-controlled colloidal systems, and we highlight important open questions and future directions.

Synergistic Bonding of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-Based Hybrid Microgels and Gold Nanoparticles Used for Temperature-Responsive Controllable Catalysis of p-Nitrophenol Reduction

Stimuli-responsive hybrid nanoparticles used for controllable catalysis have been attracting increasing attention. This study aims to prepare hybrid microgels with excellent temperature-sensitive colorimetric and catalytic properties through combining the surface plasmon resonance properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the temperature-sensitive properties of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based microgels. Microgels with hydroxy groups (MG-OH) were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization, using N-isopropylacrylamide as the main monomer, hydroxyethyl methylacrylate as the functional monomer, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as the crosslinker, and 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride as an initiator to ensure the microgels are positively charged. Furthermore, chemical modification on the surface of MG-OH was carried out by 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane to obtain thiolated microgels (MG-SH). Two kinds of hybrid nanoparticles, AuNPs@MG-OH and AuNPs@MG-SH, were self-assembled, through electrostatic interaction between positive MG-OH and negative citrate-stabilized AuNPs as well as through synergistic bonding of electrostatic interaction and Au-S bonding between positive MG-SH and negative AuNPs. The morphology, stability, temperature-sensitive colorimetric properties, and catalytic properties of hybrid microgels were systematically investigated. Results showed that although both AuNPs@MG-OH and AuNPs@MG-SH exhibit good temperature-sensitive colorimetric properties and controllable catalytic properties for the reduction reaction of p-nitrophenol, AuNPs@MG-SH with synergistic bonding has better stability and higher catalytic performance than AuNPs@MG-OH. This work has good competitiveness against known PNIPAM-based materials and may provide an effective method for preparing smart catalysts by self-assembly with stimuli-responsive polymers, which has a great potential application for catalyzing a variety of reactions.

Controlled Assembly of Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Static to Dynamic Nanostructures

The spatial arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles can dramatically affect their interaction with electromagnetic waves, which offers an effective approach to systematically control their optical properties and manifest new phenomena. To this end, significant efforts were made to develop methodologies by which the assembly structure of metal nanoparticles can be controlled with high precision. Herein, recent advances in bottom-up chemical strategies toward the well-controlled assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles, including multicomponent and multifunctional systems are reviewed. Further, it is discussed how the progress in this area has paved the way toward the construction of smart dynamic nanostructures capable of on-demand, reversible structural changes that alter their properties in a predictable and reproducible manner. Finally, this review provides insight into the challenges, future directions, and perspectives in the field of controlled plasmonic assemblies.

Dual-Stimuli Responsive Single-Chain Polymer Folding via Intrachain Complexation of Tetramethoxyazobenzene and β-Cyclodextrin

We synthesize and characterize a triblock polymer with asymmetric tetramethoxyazobenzene (TMAB) and β-cyclodextrin functionalization, taking advantage of the well-characterized azobenzene derivative-cyclodextrin inclusion complex to promote photoresponsive, self-contained folding of the polymer in an aqueous system. We use ¹H NMR to show the reversibility of (E)-to-(Z) and (Z)-to-(E) TMAB photoisomerization, and evaluate the thermal stability of (Z)-TMAB and the comparatively rapid acid-catalyzed thermal (Z)-to-(E) isomerization. Important for its potential use as a functional material, we show the photoisomerization cyclability of the polymeric TMAB chromophore and calculate isomerization quantum yields by extinction spectroscopy. To verify self-inclusion of the polymeric TMAB and cyclodextrin, we use two-dimensional ¹H NOESY NMR data to show proximity of TMAB and cyclodextrin in the (E)-state only; however, (Z)-TMAB is not locally correlated with cyclodextrin. Finally, the observed decrease in photoisomerization quantum yield for the dual-functionalized polymer compared to the isolated chromophore in an aqueous solution confirms TMAB and β-cyclodextrin not only are in proximity to one another, but also form the inclusion complex.

Importance of Substrate-Particle Repulsion for Protein-Templated Assembly of Metal Nanoparticles

We study the protein-directed assembly of colloidal gold nanoparticles on de novo designed protein nanofiber templates. Using sequential assembly on glass substrates, we attach positively charged gold nanoparticles to protein nanofibers engineered to have a high density of negatively charged surface residues. Using a combination of electron and optical microscopy, we measure the density of particle attachment and characterize binding specificity. By varying nanoparticle size and pH of the solution, we explore the importance of charge-dependent particle-fiber and particle-substrate interactions. We find an inverse correlation between particle size and attachment density to protein nanofibers, attributed to the balance between size-dependent electrostatic particle-fiber attraction and particle-substrate repulsion. We show pH-dependent particle attachment density and binding specificity in relation to the protonation fraction of each assembly layer. Finally, we employ hyperspectral scattering microscopy to draw conclusions about particle density and interparticle spacings of optically observable particle assemblies.

Photochemical Synthesis of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles-A Review

Nanomaterials have supported important technological advances due to their unique properties and their applicability in various fields, such as biomedicine, catalysis, environment, energy, and electronics. This has triggered a tremendous increase in their demand. In turn, materials scientists have sought facile methods to produce nanomaterials of desired features, i.e., morphology, composition, colloidal stability, and surface chemistry, as these determine the targeted application. The advent of photoprocesses has enabled the easy, fast, scalable, and cost- and energy-effective production of metallic nanoparticles of controlled properties without the use of harmful reagents or sophisticated equipment. Herein, we overview the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles via photochemical routes. We extensively discuss the effect of varying the experimental parameters, such as the pH, exposure time, and source of irradiation, the use or not of reductants and surfactants, reagents' nature and concentration, on the outcomes of these noble nanoparticles, namely, their size, shape, and colloidal stability. The hypothetical mechanisms that govern these green processes are discussed whenever available. Finally, we mention their applications and insights for future developments.

Microenvironment-Triggered Degradable Hydrogel for Imaging Diagnosis and Combined Treatment of Intraocular Choroidal Melanoma

Human choroidal melanoma (HCM) is one of the most common primary intraocular tumors and easily provokes liver metastases owing to the lack of sensitive and noninvasive therapeutic methods. Concerning the imaging diagnostics and therapeutic predicaments for choroidal melanoma, we designed microenvironment-triggered degradable hydrogels (RENP-ICG@PNIPAM:Dox-FA) based on ultrasmall (<5 nm) rare-earth nanoparticles (RENPs) with enhanced NIR-II luminescence. The ultrasmall diameter can significantly enhance the NIR-II luminescence performance of RENPs. RENPs were encapsulated by a dual-response PNIPAM hydrogel, which could release drug by responding to heat energy and glutathione under the tumor microenvironment. The in vitro/in vivo NIR-II imaging detection and antitumor activity were also compared systematically after different treatment conditions on ocular choroidal melanoma-1 cells and tumor-bearing mice, respectively. Besides, the degradability of the hydrogel composites under physiological conditions could be conducive to enhance the photothermal-chemotherapeutic effect and alleviate long-term biological toxicity. Our work on the microenvironment-triggered hydrogels with enhanced NIR imaging and easy metabolism may provide a promising strategy for sensitive and noninvasive imaging and phototherapy in ocular tumors.

Photoactivated Refractive Index Anisotropy in Fluorescent Thiophene Derivatives

The optical control of anisotropy in materials is highly advantageous for many technological applications, including the real-time modulation of another light signal in photonic switches and sensors. Here, we introduce three thiophene derivatives with a donor-acceptor structure, which feature different positions of an electron-acceptor nitrile group, and both photoalignment and luminescence properties. Quantum chemical calculations highlight the presence of trans-forms stable at room temperature and metastable cis-isomers. Besides photoluminescence peaked at 440-460 nm and 0.4 ns lifetime, the three nonlinear optical chromophores exhibit photoinduced anisotropy of the refractive index closely depending on the specific molecular structure, with higher values of birefringence at lower driving signal being obtained for ortho substitution of the nitrile group. All-optical modulation of an external light beam at rates of hundreds of hertz is demonstrated in the fluorescent systems. This finding opens an interesting route to multispectral photonic switches embedded in the active layers of light-emitting devices.

Auxetic Thermoresponsive Nanoplasmonic Optical Switch

Development and use of metamaterials have been gaining prominence in large part due to the possibility of creating platforms with "disruptive" and unique optical properties. However, to date, the majority of such systems produced using micro or nanotechnology are static and can only perform certain target functions. Next-generation multifunctional smart optical metamaterials are expected to have tunable elements with the possibility of controlling the optical properties in real time via variation in parameters such as pressure, mechanical stress, and voltage or through nonlinear optical effects. Here, we address this challenge by developing a thermally controlled optical switch, based on the self-assembly of poly( N-isopropylacrylamide)-functionalized gold nanoparticles on a planar macroscale gold substrate. We show that such meta-surfaces can be tuned to exhibit substantial changes in the optical properties in terms of both wavelength and intensity, through the temperature-controlled variation of the interparticle distance within the nanoparticle monolayer as well as its separation from the substrate. This change is based on temperature-induced auxetic expansion and contraction of the functional ligands. Such a system has potential for numerous applications, ranging from thermal sensors to regulated light harnessing.

Thermo-Sensitive Nanomaterials: Recent Advance in Synthesis and Biomedical Applications

Progress in nanotechnology has enabled us to open many new fronts in biomedical research by exploiting the peculiar properties of materials at the nanoscale. The thermal sensitivity of certain materials is a highly valuable property because it can be exploited in many promising applications, such as thermo-sensitive drug or gene delivery systems, thermotherapy, thermal biosensors, imaging, and diagnosis. This review focuses on recent advances in thermo-sensitive nanomaterials of interest in biomedical applications. We provide an overview of the different kinds of thermoresponsive nanomaterials, discussing their potential and the physical mechanisms behind their thermal response. We thoroughly review their applications in biomedicine and finally discuss the current challenges and future perspectives of thermal therapies.
