Controlled Fabrication of K2Ti8O17 Nanowires for Highly Efficient and Ultrafast Adsorption toward Methylene Blue

Lanthanum hydroxide@cellulose membranes with tunable pore sizes for selective removal of dyes with the same charges

Adsorptive membranes for the efficient separation of dyes with the same charges are quite desirable. Herein, a novel membrane of lanthanum hydroxide/cellulose hydrogel coated filter paper (LC) was prepared through a facile strategy of dip-coating followed by freeze-shaping. With the aid of cellulose gel, the generated La(OH)3 achieved fine dispersion. In addition, the pore size of LC membrane could be regulated by altering the cellulose concentration or the lanthanum chloride dosage, which was crucial for its water flux. In particular, the obtained membrane possessed a high water flux (128.4 L m-2 h-1) and a high dye rejection (97.2 %) for anionic Congo red (CR) only driven by the gravity, which outperformed many previously reported membranes. More intriguingly, its dye rejection for anionic methyl orange (MO) was only 0.9 %, exhibiting high selectivity for dyes with the same charges. Single-solute adsorption experiments indicated that the CR adsorption on the membrane was best fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and it followed the Langmuir monolayer adsorption mechanism.

Cellulose nanocrystal/halloysite nanotube composite aerogels for water purification

The quest for advanced water purification technologies has been vigorous over recent decades, motivated by the promise of ever more efficient, greener, and affordable tools. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are naturally-occurring materials that have shown potential as dye sorbents. Unfortunately, these nanoclays suffer from low permeation during water treatment, which limits their widespread application. Here, we use cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as structural scaffolds to support HNTs and fabricate permeable aerogel sorbent materials with mechanical stability. Aerogels containing 40 wt% HNTs showed a maximum dye adsorption capacity of 60 mg g-1 towards methylene blue, with only 15% decay in efficiency after 5 cycles. The good mechanical properties of these materials allowed for their incorporation into free-flowing purification columns that displayed excellent dye removal ability. Overall, this work provides a new strategy to fabricate green, renewable, and low-cost sorbent materials for the removal of dyes and shows potential for the sorption of other ionic pollutants.

Synthesis of mesoporous SiO2-CeO2 hybrid nanostructures with high catalytic activity for transamidation reaction

Transamidation reactions catalyzed by boronic acid derivatives and metal catalysts are well known nevertheless their requirement for elevated temperatures and long reaction times were considered major obstacles in converting amides to N-alkyl amides with the coupling of primary amides and amines. The acidic-basic co-existence of ceria nanoparticles is considered a perfect choice for different catalytic activities. Mesoporous silica on the other hand is well known for its use as a supporting material for catalysts owing to its excellent characteristics like large surface area, good absorption capacity, and high-temperature stability. The SiO₂-CeO₂ hybrid nanocomposite was prepared by solvothermal route followed by annealing and the formation of the catalyst was confirmed by XRD, EDX, FTIR, and TEM characterization techniques. The hybrid catalyst shows high catalytic activity towards transamidation reaction at very low temperatures and in solvent-free conditions compared to pure ceria nanoparticles. The SiO₂-CeO₂ catalyst showed more than 99% selectivity and a remarkable catalytic activity of above 90% for the conversion of N-heptyl amine with acetamide to N-heptyl acetamide at a very low temperature of 120 °C for 3 hours. Furthermore, the catalyst remains stable and active for repeated catalytic cycles. It established 80% catalytic activity even after 4 repeated cycles making it suitable for multiple-time usages.

Potassium Titanate Supported Atomically Dispersed Palladium for Catalytic Oxidation

Single-atom catalysts based on noble metals provide efficient atomic utilization along with enhanced reactivity. Herein, a convenient strategy to construct atomically dispersed palladium catalyst on layered potassium titanate (KTO), which has enhanced interaction between the TiO₆ layer and the palladium atoms, is presented. Due to the presence of K⁺ ions in the interlayers of KTO, the TiO₆ octahedron layers have negative charge, which increases the interaction between Pd atoms and the substrate, thus preventing their agglomeration. In addition, the provision of charge of K⁺ ion makes the molecular oxygen in the system easier to be activated and promotes catalytic oxidation activity.

Piezoelectric built-in electric field advancing TiO2 for highly efficient photocatalytic air purification

Photocatalytic air purification is a promising technology; however, it suffers from a limited rate of photocatalytic mineralization (easily inactivated surfactant sites of hydroxyls) and poor kinetics of degradation. Herein, we report a ferroelectric strategy, employing a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer embedded with TiO2, where the polarization field of stretched PVDF dramatically enhances and stabilizes active adsorption sites for the promotion of charge separation. The F (-) and H (+) atomic layers with distinct local structures in stretched PVDF increase the electron cloud density around Ti which simultaneously promotes the dissociation of water to form hydroxyl groups which are easier to activate for adsorption of formaldehyde molecules. Besides, the ferroelectric field of stretched PVDF effectively separates the photogenerated charge carriers and facilitates the carriers' transportation of TiO2/PVDF. The optimal stretched TiO2/PVDF exhibits excellent photocatalytic mineralization for formaldehyde with considerable stability. This work may evolve the polarization field as a new method to enhance adsorption and activation of hydroxyls and disclose the mechanism by which hydroxyl radicals mineralize gaseous formaldehyde for photocatalytic air purification.

Development of novel K0.8Ni0.4Ti1.6O4 nano bamboo leaves, microstructural characterization, double absorption, and photocatalytic removal of organic pollutant

Novel K_0.8Ni_0.4Ti_1.6O₄ (KNTO) nano bamboo leaves were prepared for the first time under a simple hydrothermal method with 3 M KOH at 320 °C over 80 min. Highly pure KNTO possessing layered structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Double absorption feature of KNTO semiconductor was revealed at band energies of 1.88 and 2.08 eV by the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activity was explored by the photodegradation of MB organic dye. KNTO not only exhibits strong adsorptive ability on methylene blue (MB) in dark environment, but also possesses good photodegradation capability of 94% degradation in 60 min. Degradation mechanism revealed that the photogenerated holes play an essential role in the MB degradation process, which is confirmed by trapping experiments. The recycling experiments demonstrated very high recycling ability and durability of KNTO nano bamboo leaves, suggesting KNTO is a potential candidate for high efficiency organic pollutant removal in the wastewater treatment.

Recent advancement in Bi5O7I-based nanocomposites for high performance photocatalysts

Bi₅O₇I belongs to the family of bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I), having a unique layered structure with an internal electrostatic field that promotes the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. Interestingly, Bi₅O₇I exhibits higher thermal stability compared to its other BiOX member compounds and absorption spectrum extended to the visible region. Bi₅O₇I has demonstrated applications in diverse fields such as photocatalytic degradation of various organic pollutants, marine antifouling, etc. Unfortunately, owing to its wide band gap of ∼2.9 eV, its absorption lies mainly in the ultraviolet region, and a tiny portion of absorption lies in the visible region. Due to limited absorption, the photocatalytic performance of pure Bi₅O₇I is still facing challenges. In order to reduce the band gap and increase the light absorption capability of Bi₅O₇I, doping and formation of heterostructure strategies have been employed, which showed promising results in the photocatalytic performance. In addition, the plasmonic heterostructures of Bi₅O₇I were also developed to further boost the efficiency of Bi₅O₇I as a photocatalyst. Here, in this review article, we present such recent efforts made for the advanced development of Bi₅O₇I regarding its synthesis, properties and applications. The strategies for photocatalytic performance enhancement have been discussed in detail. Moreover, in the conclusion section, we have presented the current challenges and discussed possible prospective developments in this field.

Photoenzymatic Activity of Artificial-Natural Bienzyme Applied in Biodegradation of Methylene Blue and Accelerating Polymerization of Dopamine

Enzymes as biocatalysts have attracted extensive attention. In addition to immobilizing or encapsulating various enzymes for combating the easy loss of enzymatic activity, strengthening the enzymatic activity upon light irradiation is a challenge. To the best of our knowledge, the work of spatiotemporally modulating the catalytic activity of artificial-natural bienzymes with a near-infrared light irradiation has not been reported. Inspired by immobilized enzymes and nanozymes, herein a platinum nanozyme was synthesized; subsequently, the platinum nanozyme was grafted on the body of laccase, thus successfully obtaining the artificial-natural bienzyme. The three-dimensional structure of the artificial-natural bienzyme was greatly different from that of the immobilized enzyme or the encapsulated enzyme. The platinum nanozyme possessed excellent laccase-like activity, which was 3.7 times higher than that of laccase. Meanwhile, the coordination between the platinum nanozyme and laccase was proved. Besides, the cascaded catalysis of artificial-natural bienzyme was verified with hydrogen peroxide as a mediator. The enzymatic activities of artificial-natural bienzyme with and without near-infrared light irradiation were, respectively, 46.2 and 29.5% higher than that of free laccase. Moreover, the reversible catalytic activity of the coupled enzyme could be manipulated with and without a near-infrared light at 808 nm. As a result, the degradation rates of methylene blue catalyzed by the coupled enzyme and the platinum nanozyme were higher than that of laccase. Furthermore, accelerating polymerization of the dopamine was also demonstrated. Briefly, this facile strategy may provide a universal approach to control the catalytic activity of other natural enzymes.

Magnetic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks composite as an efficient adsorbent for arsenic removal from aqueous solution

In this study, magnetic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) was prepared by a one-step method, where its evolution involved the coprecipitation reactions concomitant with the self-assembly reactions. Structural characterizations indicated that magnetic ZIF-8 showed irregular polyhedral morphology with a large specific surface area (696.5 m²/g) and saturation magnetization (4.31 emu/g). The as-prepared magnetic ZIF-8 enhanced the adsorption performance of As(III) and As(V), compared with bare Fe₃O₄. The pseudo second-order kinetic model (R² = 0.9627 and 0.9893 for As(III) and As(V), respectively) and the Langmuir model (R² = 0.9441 for As(III) and 0.9851 for As(V)) can fit the adsorption process well, confirming the nature of single-layer homogeneous chemisorption. The adsorption capacity was 30.87 and 17.51 mg/g, and their corresponding values of PC were 2.664 and 1.286 L/g, for As(III) and As(V), respectively. Solution pH showed an adverse effect on As(V) adsorption whereas no obvious effect on As(III). The ionic strength and coexisting ions had not obvious influence on adsorption of As(III) and As(V). The adsorption mechanism was explored and discussed based on the detailed spectroscopy analysis. This adsorbent can be recovered magnetically after use, which is promising for the practical application.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Mesoporous Lepidocrocite-Type Layered Sodium Titanate as a Superior Adsorbent for Selective Removal of Cationic Dyes via an Ion-Exchange Mechanism

Three-dimensional mesoporous lepidocrocite-type layered sodium titanate (LST) was constructed at room temperature by the electrostatic interaction between Ti_1-δO₂^4δ- nanosheets and Na⁺ ions. The results of a systematic X-ray diffraction investigation manifested the transition from the Ti_1-δO₂^4δ- nanosheets phase to the titanate/titania phase, which determined a phase diagram as a function of the temperature and NaCl concentration. In addition, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric and differential thermal, N₂ adsorption-desorption, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as ζ-potential analyses were utilized for adequate characterization of the LST physical and chemical properties. Furthermore, batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that LST had superior adsorption property and adsorption selectivity toward cationic dyes compared to those of anionic dyes. A multifarious influencing effect on the cationic dye adsorption behavior during the adsorption process was systematically investigated. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model felicitously depicted the cationic dye adsorption behavior through an elaborate kinetic study, namely, chemisorption was the main adsorption action. Meanwhile, different adsorption isotherm models were utilized to process the experimental data, uncovering that the adsorption isotherms of cationic dyes on LST were suitable for a Langmuir isothermal model. More importantly, an ion-exchange mechanism was proposed for the cationic dye adsorption on LST, and the ion-exchange reaction occurred with a stoichiometric exchange between 1 mol of Na⁺ ions in the LST interlayer and 1 mol of MB molecules in the solution. In parallel, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammogram measurements verified that the high ionic conductivity of Na⁺ ions in the LST interlayer resulted in a superior adsorption property. A two-step acid-base procedure was ultimately adopted to effectively regenerate LST adsorbent. This work provides not only an alternative adsorbent with superior adsorption capacity and adsorption selectivity but also some guiding significance for research on the adsorption mechanism of layered titanates.

Construction of porous 2D MOF nanosheets for rapid and selective adsorption of cationic dyes

Porous two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D-MOF) nanosheets Zr-BTB-H4TBAPy and PCN-134-2D were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and zeta potential and subjected to dye adsorption and separation investigation. These 2D-MOF nanosheets are ultrathin, have large surface area and high water stability and can selectively adsorb cationic dyes, rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MLB), from aqueous solutions, with removal rates of nearly 100% within 10 min. The adsorption kinetic results showed that Zr-BTB-H4TBAPy and PCN-134-2D could effectively and selectively remove cationic dyes from water, followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption mechanism studies further indicated that their excellent adsorption and separation performance could be ascribed to their ultrathin and porous features, plentiful exposed surface-active sites, and favorable electrostatic interactions between the adsorbents and cationic dyes. Moreover, the porous 2D MOF nanosheets displayed excellent recyclability and reusability. These outstanding features make them potentially applicable for rapid and selective cationic dye adsorption and separation.

Facile and Scalable Fabrication of Antibacterial CO2-Responsive Cotton for Ultrafast and Controllable Removal of Anionic Dyes

A novel CO₂-responsive cotton as an eco-friendly adsorbent derived from poly(4-acryloyloxybenzophenone-co-2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) and cotton was fabricated via a facile and fast dip-coating method. As expected, upon CO₂ stimulation, the protonated cotton presented CO₂-induced "on-off" selective adsorption behaviors toward anionic dyes owing to electrostatic interactions. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the CO₂-responsive cotton toward anionic dyes obeyed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics models, respectively. It is noteworthy that the CO₂-responsive cotton exhibited high adsorption capacity and ultrafast adsorption rate toward anionic dyes with the maximum adsorption capacities of 1785.71 mg g^-1 for methyl orange (MO), 1108.65 mg g^-1 for methyl blue (MB), and 1315.79 mg g^-1 for naphthol green B (NGB), following the adsorption equilibrium times of 5 min for MO, 3 min for MB, and 4 min for NGB. Moreover, the CO₂-responsive cotton also exhibited high removal efficiency toward anionic dyes in synthetic dye effluent. Additionally, the CO₂-responsive cotton could be facilely regenerated via heat treatment under mild conditions and presented stable adsorption properties even after 15 cycles. Finally, the as-prepared CO₂-responsive cotton exhibited outstanding antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. In summary, this novel CO₂-responsive cotton can be viewed as a promising eco-friendly adsorbent material for potential scalable application in dye-contaminated wastewater remediation.
