Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation by a Trinuclear Copper(II) Complex

Synthesis of Quinoline-Based Pt-Sb Complexes with L- or Z-Type Interaction: Ligand-Controlled Redox via Anion Transfer

A series of Pt-Sb complexes with two or three L-type quinoline side arms were prepared and studied. Two ligands, tri(8-quinolinyl)stibane (SbQ3, Q = 8-quinolinyl, 1) and 8,8'-(phenylstibanediyl)diquinoline (SbQ2Ph, 2), were used to synthesize the PtII-SbIII complexes (SbQ3)PtCl2 (3) and (SbQ2Ph)PtCl2 (4). Chloride abstraction with AgOAc provided the bis-acetate complexes (SbQ3)Pt(OAc)2 (5) and (SbQ2Ph)Pt(OAc)2 (6). To better understand the electronic effects of the Sb moiety, analogous bis-chloride complexes were oxidized to an overall formal oxidation state of +7 (i.e., Pt + Sb formal oxidation states = 7) using dichloro(phenyl)-λ3-iodane (PhICl2) and 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-dibenzoquinone (o-chloranil) as two-electron oxidants. Depending on the oxidant, different conformational changes occur within the coordination sphere of Pt as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the nature of Pt-Sb interactions was evaluated via molecular and localized orbital calculations.

Constructing Co4(SO4)4 Clusters within Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Multinuclear metal clusters are ideal candidates to catalyze small molecule activation reactions involving the transfer of multiple electrons. However, synthesizing active metal clusters is a big challenge. Herein, on constructing an unparalleled Co4(SO4)4 cluster within porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the electrocatalytic features of such Co4(SO4)4 clusters for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is reported. The reaction of CoII sulfate and metal complexes of tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin under solvothermal conditions afforded Co4-M-MOFs (M═Co, Cu, and Zn). Crystallographic studies revealed that these Co4-M-MOFs have the same framework structure, having the Co4(SO4)4 clusters connected by metalloporphyrin units through Co─Npyridyl bonds. In the Co4(SO4)4 cluster, the four CoII ions are chemically and symmetrically equivalent and are each coordinated with four sulfate O atoms to give a distorted cube-like structure. Electrocatalytic studies showed that these Co4-M-MOFs are all active for electrocatalytic OER and ORR. Importantly, by regulating the activity of the metalloporphyrin units, it is confirmed that the Co4(SO4)4 cluster is active for oxygen electrocatalysis. With the use of Co porphyrins as connecting units, Co4-Co-MOF displays the highest electrocatalytic activity in this series of MOFs by showing a 10 mA cm-2 OER current density at 357 mV overpotential and an ORR half-wave potential at 0.83 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Theoretical studies revealed the synergistic effect of two proximal Co atoms in the Co4(SO4)4 cluster in OER by facilitating the formation of O─O bonds. This work is of fundamental significance to present the construction of Co4(SO4)4 clusters in framework structures for oxygen electrocatalysis and to demonstrate the cooperation between two proximal Co atoms in such clusters during the O─O bond formation process.

Tuning Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity: Insights from the Active-Site Distance in LnCu6 Clusters

Atomically precise metal clusters serve as a unique model for unraveling the intricate mechanism of the catalytic reaction and exploring the complex relationship between structure and activity. Herein, three series of water-soluble heterometallic clusters LnCu6, abbreviated as LnCu6-AC (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, Er, Yb; HAC = acetic acid), LnCu6-IM (Ln = La and Nd; IM = Imidazole), and LnCu6-IDA (Ln = Nd; H2IDA = Iminodiacetic acid) are presented, each featuring a uniform metallic core stabilized by distinct protected ligands. Crystal structure analysis reveals a triangular prism topology formed by six Cu2+ ions around one Ln3+ ion in LnCu6, with variations in Cu···Cu distances attributed to different ligands. Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) shows that these different LnCu6 clusters exhibit different OER activities with remarkable turnover frequency of 135 s-1 for NdCu6-AC, 79 s-1 for NdCu6-IM and 32 s-1 for NdCu6-IDA. Structural analysis and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations underscore the correlation between shorter Cu···Cu distances and improves OER catalytic activity, emphasizing the pivotal role of active-site distance in regulating electrocatalytic OER activities. These results provide valuable insights into the OER mechanism and contribute to the design of efficient homogeneous OER electrocatalysts.

Secondary Structure in Enzyme-Inspired Polymer Catalysts Impacts Water Oxidation Efficiency

Protein structure plays an essential role on their stability, functionality, and catalytic activity. In this work, the interplay between the β-sheet structure and its catalytic implications to the design of enzyme-inspired materials is investigated. Here, inspiration is drawn from the active sites and β-sheet rich structure of the highly efficient multicopper oxidase (MCO) to engineer a bio-inspired electrocatalyst for water oxidation utilizing the abundant metal, copper. Copper ions are coordinated to poly-histidine (polyCuHis), as they are in MCO active sites. The resultant polyCuHis material effectively promotes water oxidation with low overpotentials (0.15 V) in alkaline systems. This activity is due to the 3D structure of the poly-histidine backbone. By increasing the prevalence of β-sheet structure and decreasing the random coil nature of the polyCuHis secondary structures, this study is able to modulates the electrocatalytic activity of this material is modulated, shifting it toward water oxidation. These results highlight the crucial role of the local environment at catalytic sites for efficient, energy-relevant transformations. Moreover, this work highlights the importance of conformational structure in the design of scaffolds for high-performance electrocatalysts.

Electrochemical water oxidation reaction by dinuclear Re(V) oxo complexes with a 1,4-benzoquinone core via the redox induced electron transfer (RIET) process

We report two dinuclear rhenium(V) oxo complexes 1 and 2 types, [ReV(O)(Cl)3(L2-)ReV(O)(Cl)3][NBu4]2 (1, L2- = dianionic 2,5-dihydroxy 1,4-benzoquinone (DBQ2-)) and (2, L2- = dianionic chloranilic acid (CA2-) ligands), as a homogeneous electrocatalyst for water oxidation reactions in the acetonitrile-water mixture. The evolution of dioxygen gas at the anode was confirmed by a GC-TCD study. In controlled potential electrolysis (CPE), oxidation at 1.30 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) at neutral pH, 1 and 2 afforded 1+ [ReVI(O)(Cl)3(DBQ˙3-)ReVI(O)(Cl)3]- and 2+ [ReVI(O)(Cl)3(CA˙3-)ReVI(O)(Cl)3]- ions, respectively, via the redox induced electron transfer (RIET) process. Electrochemically generated species of 1+ and 2+ could be isolated in dry acetonitrile. 1+ and 2+ ions give strong EPR signals in fluid solution as well as under frozen glass conditions due to the [ReVI(O)(Cl)3(L˙3-)ReVI(O)(Cl)3]- ↔ [ReVI(O)(Cl)3(L2-)ReV(O)(Cl)3]- (where L2- = DBQ2- and CA2-) equilibrium. However, the continuation of the CPE study (1.30 V vs. Ag/AgCl) in the presence of acetonitrile-water mixture oxidised the in situ generated species of 1+ and 2+ to higher valent ReVIO species. These species (1+ and 2+) bound water through the water nucleophilic attack (WNA) to produce peroxide intermediate species of [ReV(OOH)(Cl)3(DBQ2-)ReV(OOH)(Cl)3] (A1) and [ReV(OOH)(Cl)3(CA2-)ReV(OOH)(Cl)3] (A2) for catalysts 1 and 2, respectively. Interestingly, A1 and A2 were authenticated and analysed by ESI mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy and were the active precursors of this water oxidation process. The extent of current generation under similar conditions suggested that complex 1 is superior to complex 2 for the water oxidation reaction. Notably, the maximum turnover frequency (TOFmax) of catalysts 1 and 2 were 2.1 and 1.6 s-1 at 0.27 V and 0.24 V over potential, respectively, which is very significant in WOR.

Design and Development of Sustainable Cu2 (II)- and Mn2 (III)-Embedded Bifunctional Electrocatalysts: Enhanced Hydrogen and Oxygen Generation

Nowadays, environmentally friendly, low-cost-effective, and sustainable electrocatalysts used widely for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions have come into the limelight as a new research topic for scientists. This study highlights the preparation of two unique and symmetrical dinuclear Cu (II) and Mn (III) bifunctional catalysts by a facile simple slow evaporation and diffusion route. [C32H24Cu2F4N4O4] (1) and [C32H24Mn2F4N4O4] (2) both have monoclinic (C2/c (15)) crystal systems, with oxidation states +2 and +3, respectively. Prominent SPR peaks at 372 and 412 nm indicate an M-L charge transfer transition in both complexes. The synthesized electrocatalysts display exceptional catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Complex 1 exhibits enhanced hydrogen generation in 0.5 M H2SO4 with a small overpotential of 216 mV at -10 mA cm-2 along with a significantly lower Tafel value of 97 mV/dec compared to Complex 2. Moreover, Complex 1 is highly active for the OER in 1 M KOH with a small Tafel slope of 103 mV/dec and a low overpotential of 340 mV to acquire 10 mA cm-2 current density, compared to Complex 2. Complex 1 and Complex 2 remain stable up to 20 h in acidic electrolyte and up to 36 h and 20 h in the basic electrolyte, respectively.

X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy of N2S2 Cu(II)/(III) complexes

This study investigates the influence of ligand charge on transition energies in a series of CuN2S2 complexes based on dithiocarbazate Schiff base ligands using Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Kβ valence-to-core (VtC) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). By comparing the formally Cu(II) complexes [CuII(HL1)] (HL12- = dimethyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and [CuII(HL2)] (HL22- = dibenzyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and the formally Cu(III) complex [CuIII(L2)], distinct changes in transition energies are observed, primarily attributed to the metal oxidation state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate how an increased negative charge on the deprotonated L23- ligand stabilizes the Cu(III) center through enhanced charge donation, modulating the core transition energies. Overall, significant shifts to higher energies are noted upon metal oxidation, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing ligand structure in XAS/VtC XES analysis. The data further support the redox-innocent role of the Schiff base ligands and underscore the criticality of ligand protonation levels in future spectroscopic studies, particularly for catalytic intermediates. The combined XAS-VtC XES methodology validates the Cu(III) oxidation state assignment while offering insights into ligand protonation effects on core-level spectroscopic transitions.

Improvement of electrocatalytic water oxidation activity of novel copper complex by modulating the axial coordination of phosphate on metal center

The structure of organic ligand scaffolds of copper complexes critically affects their electrocatalytic properties toward water oxidation, which is widely regarded as the bottleneck of overall water splitting. Herein, two novel mononuclear Cu complexes, [Cu(dmabpy)](ClO4)2 (1, dmabpy = 6,6'-bis(dimethylaminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine) and [Cu(mabpy)](ClO4)2 (2, mabpy = 6,6'-bis(methylaminomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine), with four-coordinated distorted planar quadrilateral geometry were synthesized and explored as efficient catalysts for electrochemical oxygen evolution in phosphate buffer solution. Interestingly, complex 1 with a tertiary amine group catalyzes water oxidation with lower onset overpotential and better catalytic performance, while complex 2 containing a secondary amine fragment displays much lower catalytic activity under identical conditions. The water oxidation catalytic mechanism of the two complexes is proposed based on the electrochemical test results. Experimental methods indicate that phosphate coordinated on the Cu center of the two complexes inhibits their reaction with substrate water molecules, resulting in lower activity toward water oxidation. Electrochemical tests reveal that the structure of the coordinated nitrogen atom improves the catalytic performance of the Cu complexes by modulating the coordination of phosphate on the Cu center, indicating that a minor alteration of the coordinating nitrogen atom of the ligand has a detrimental effect on the catalytic performance of electrochemical WOCs based on transition metal complexes.

Robust Molecular Anodes for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Based on Electropolymerized Molecular Cu Complexes

A multistep synthesis of a new tetra-amidate macrocyclic ligand functionalized with alkyl-thiophene moieties, 15,15-bis(6-(thiophen-3-yl)hexyl)-8,13-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[b,h][1,4,7,10]tetraazacyclotridecine-6,7,14,16(15H,17H)-tetraone, H4 L, is reported. The reaction of the deprotonated ligand, L4- , and Cu(II) generates the complex [LCu]2- , that can be further oxidized to Cu(III) with iodine to generate [LCu]- . The H4 L ligand and their Cu complexes have been thoroughly characterized by analytic and spectroscopic techniques (including X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, XAS). Under oxidative conditions, the thiophene group of [LCu]2- complex polymerizes on the surface of graphitic electrodes (glassy carbon disks (GC), glassy carbon plates (GCp ), carbon nanotubes (CNT), or graphite felts (GF)) generating highly stable thin films. With CNTs deposited on a GC by drop casting, hybrid molecular materials labeled as GC/CNT@p-[LCu]2- are obtained. The latter are characterized by electrochemical techniques that show their capacity to electrocatalytically oxidize water to dioxygen at neutral pH. These new molecular anodes achieve current densities in the range of 0.4 mA cm-2 at 1.30 V versus NHE with an onset overpotential at ≈250 mV. Bulk electrolysis experiments show an excellent stability achieving TONs in the range of 7600 during 24 h with no apparent loss of catalytic activity and maintaining the molecular catalyst integrity, as evidenced by electrochemical techniques and XAS spectroscopy.

Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation by Mononuclear Copper Complexes of Bis-amide Ligands with N4 Donor: Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

The present work describes electrocatalytic water oxidation of three monomeric copper complexes [CuII(L1)] (1), [CuII(L2)(H2O)] (2), and [CuII(L3)] (3) with bis-amide tetradentate ligands: L1 = N,N'-(1,2-phenylene)dipicolinamide, L2 = N,N'-(4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylene)bis(pyrazine-2-carboxamide), L3 = N,N'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(pyrazine-2-carboxamide), for the production of molecular oxygen by the oxidation of water at pH 13.0. Ligands and all complexes have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal XRD, analytical, and spectroscopic techniques. X-ray crystallographic data show that the ligand coordinates to copper in a dianionic fashion through deprotonation of two -NH protons. Cyclic voltammetry study shows a reversible copper-centered redox couple with one ligand-based oxidation event. The electrocatalytic water oxidation occurs at an onset potential of 1.16 (overpotential, η ≈ 697 mV), 1.2 (η ≈ 737 mV), and 1.23 V (η ≈ 767 mV) for 1, 2, and 3 respectively. A systematic variation of the ligand scaffold has been found to display a profound effect on the rate of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution. The results of the theoretical (density functional theory) studies show the stepwise ligand-centered oxidation process and the formation of the O-O bond during water oxidation passes through the water nucleophilic attack for all the copper complexes. At pH = 13, the turnover frequencies have been experimentally obtained as 88, 1462, and 10 s-1 (peak current measurements) for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Production of oxygen gas during controlled potential electrolysis was detected by gas chromatography.

Soluble Gd6Cu24 clusters: effective molecular electrocatalysts for water oxidation

The water oxidation half reaction in water splitting for hydrogen production is extremely rate-limiting. This study reports the synthesis of two heterometallic clusters (Gd6Cu24-IM and Gd6Cu24-AC) for application as efficient water oxidation catalysts. Interestingly, the maximum turnover frequency of Gd6Cu24-IM in an NaAc solution of a weak acid (pH 6) was 319 s-1. The trimetallic catalytic site, H2O-GdIIICuII2-H2O, underwent two consecutive two-electron two-proton coupled transfer processes to form high-valent GdIII-O-O-CuIII2 intermediates. Furthermore, the O-O bond was formed via intramolecular interactions between the CuIII and GdIII centers. The results of this study revealed that synergistic catalytic water oxidation between polymetallic sites can be an effective strategy for regulating O-O bond formation.

Mn-Oxygen Compounds Coordinated Ruthenium Sites with Deprotonated and Low Oxophilic Microenvironments for Membrane Electrolyzer-Based H2 -Production

Among the platinum-group metals, ruthenium (Ru), with a low water dissociation energy, is considered a promising alternative to substitute Pt for catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, optimizing the adsorption-desorption energies of H* and OH* intermediates on Ru catalytic sites is extremely desirable but remains challenging. Inspired by the natural catalytic characteristics of Mn-oxygen complex, this study reports to design Mn-oxygen compounds coordinated Ru sites (MOC-Ru) with deprotonated and low oxophilic microenvironments for modulating the adsorption-desorption of H* and OH* to promote HER kinetics. Benefiting from the unique advantages of MOC structures, including weakened HOH bond at interface, electron donation ability, and deprotonation capability, the MOC-Ru exhibits extremely low overpotential and ultralong stability in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Experimental observations and theoretical calculations elucidate that the MOC can accelerate water dissociation kinetics and promote OH* desorption in alkaline conditions and trigger the long-range H* spillover for H2 -release in acid conditions. The outstanding activity and stability of membrane electrolyzer display that the MOC-Ru catalyst holds great potential as cathode for H2 -production. This study provides essential insights into the crucial roles of deprotonated and low oxophilic microenvironments in HER catalysis and offers a new pathway to create an efficient water-splitting cathode.

Hydroxylated Polyoxometalate with Cu(II)- and Cu(I)-Aqua Complexes: A Bifunctional Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Water Splitting at Neutral pH

A sole inorganic framework material [Li(H2O)4][{CuI(H2O)1.5} {CuII(H2O)3}2{WVI12O36(OH)6}]·N2·H2S·3H2O (1) consisting of a hydroxylated polyoxometalate (POM) anion, {WVI12O36(OH)6}6-, a mixed-valent Cu(II)- and Cu(I)-aqua cationic complex species, [{CuI(H2O)1.5}{CuII(H2O)3}2]5+, a Li(I)-aqua complex cation, and three solvent molecules, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. During its synthesis, the POM cluster anion gets functionalized with six hydroxyl groups, i.e., six WVI-OH groups per cluster unit. Moreover, structural and spectral analyses have shown the presence of H2S and N2 molecules in the concerned crystal lattice, formed from "sulfate-reducing ammonium oxidation (SRAO)". Compound 1 functions as a bifunctional electrocatalyst exhibiting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by water oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by water reduction at the neutral pH. We could identify that the hydroxylated POM anion and copper-aqua complex cations are the functional sites for HER and OER, respectively. The overpotential, required to achieve a current density of 1 mA/cm2 in the case of HER (water reduction), is found to be 443 mV with a Faradaic efficiency of 84% and a turnover frequency of 4.66 s-1. In the case of OER (water oxidation), the overpotential needed to achieve a current density of 1 mA/cm2 is obtained to be 418 mV with a Faradaic efficiency of 80% and turnover frequency of 2.81 s-1. Diverse electrochemical controlled experiments have been performed to conclude that the title POM-based material functions as a true bifunctional catalyst for electrocatalytic HER as well as OER at the neutral pH without catalyst reconstruction.

Copper Complex Catalyzed Two-Electron and Proton Shuttle Mechanism of O-O Bond Formation from DFT-Based Metadynamics Simulations

We performed first-principles metadynamics simulations to explore the mechanistic pathway of oxygen-oxygen bond formation catalyzed by cis-bis(hydroxo) and cis-(hydroxo)oxo copper complexes. The ligands of considered complexes involve modified bipyridine ligands with oxo and hydroxo groups on 6, 6' positions. The study focuses on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. The individual migration of the proton to the hydroxyl group and hydroxide to the oxo and hydroxo moieties of the complexes was examined. The proton transfer requires more kinetic barrier than the hydroxide migration. The nature of the electronic density was analyzed with the help of spin population analysis. The molecular orbitals and natural orbital analysis were carried out to examine the nature of the orbitals involved in the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. The σ*(d_x²_-y²-p_x) molecular orbital of the Cu-O or Cu-OH bond overlaps with the p_z orbital of the hydroxide ion in forming the oxygen-oxygen bond. The two-electron two-centered (2e^--2C) bond is observed in the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. In the oxidation process, these ligands stabilize the electron density from the water or hydroxide ion. These redox-active ligands also help stabilize the formed hydrogen peroxide or peroxide complexes.

Unusual Water Oxidation Mechanism via a Redox-Active Copper Polypyridyl Complex

To improve Cu-based water oxidation (WO) catalysts, a proper mechanistic understanding of these systems is required. In contrast to other metals, high-oxidation-state metal-oxo species are unlikely intermediates in Cu-catalyzed WO because π donation from the oxo ligand to the Cu center is difficult due to the high number of d electrons of CuII and CuIII. As a consequence, an alternative WO mechanism must take place instead of the typical water nucleophilic attack and the inter- or intramolecular radical-oxo coupling pathways, which were previously proposed for Ru-based catalysts. [CuII(HL)(OTf)2] [HL = Hbbpya = N,N-bis(2,2'-bipyrid-6-yl)amine)] was investigated as a WO catalyst bearing the redox-active HL ligand. The Cu catalyst was found to be active as a WO catalyst at pH 11.5, at which the deprotonated complex [CuII(L-)(H2O)]+ is the predominant species in solution. The overall WO mechanism was found to be initiated by two proton-coupled electron-transfer steps. Kinetically, a first-order dependence in the catalyst, a zeroth-order dependence in the phosphate buffer, a kinetic isotope effect of 1.0, a ΔH⧧ value of 4.49 kcal·mol-1, a ΔS⧧ value of -42.6 cal·mol-1·K-1, and a ΔG⧧ value of 17.2 kcal·mol-1 were found. A computational study supported the formation of a Cu-oxyl intermediate, [CuII(L•)(O•)(H2O)]+. From this intermediate onward, formation of the O-O bond proceeds via a single-electron transfer from an approaching hydroxide ion to the ligand. Throughout the mechanism, the CuII center is proposed to be redox-inactive.

Oxygen Evolution/Reduction Reaction Catalysts: From In Situ Monitoring and Reaction Mechanisms to Rational Design

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are core steps of various energy conversion and storage systems. However, their sluggish reaction kinetics, i.e., the demanding multielectron transfer processes, still render OER/ORR catalysts less efficient for practical applications. Moreover, the complexity of the catalyst-electrolyte interface makes a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic OER/ORR mechanisms challenging. Fortunately, recent advances of in situ/operando characterization techniques have facilitated the kinetic monitoring of catalysts under reaction conditions. Here we provide selected highlights of recent in situ/operando mechanistic studies of OER/ORR catalysts with the main emphasis placed on heterogeneous systems (primarily discussing first-row transition metals which operate under basic conditions), followed by a brief outlook on molecular catalysts. Key sections in this review are focused on determination of the true active species, identification of the active sites, and monitoring of the reactive intermediates. For in-depth insights into the above factors, a short overview of the metrics for accurate characterizations of OER/ORR catalysts is provided. A combination of the obtained time-resolved reaction information and reliable activity data will then guide the rational design of new catalysts. Strategies such as optimizing the restructuring process as well as overcoming the adsorption-energy scaling relations will be discussed. Finally, pending current challenges and prospects toward the understanding and development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts and selected homogeneous catalysts are presented.

Ruthenium Azobis(benzothiazole): Electronic Structure and Impact of Substituents on the Electrocatalytic Single-Site Water Oxidation Process

The present article deals with the structurally and spectroelectrochemically characterized newer class of ruthenium-azoheteroarenes [Ru^II(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]ClO₄, [1]ClO₄-[3]ClO₄ (Ph-trpy: 4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine; L1: 2,2'-azobis(benzothiazole) ([1]ClO₄); L2: 2,2'-azobis(6-methylbenzothiazole) ([2]ClO₄); L3: 2,2'-azobis(6-chlorobenzothiazole) ([3]ClO₄)). A collective consideration of experimental (i.e., structural and spectroelectrochemical) and theoretical (DFT calculations) results of [1]ClO₄-[3]ClO₄ established selective stabilization of (i) the unperturbed azo (N═N)⁰ function of L, (ii) the exclusive presence of the isomeric form involving the N(azo) donor of L trans to Cl, and (iii) the presence of extended, hydrogen-bonded trimeric units in the asymmetric unit of [2]ClO₄ (CH---O) via the involvement of ClO₄^- anions. The detailed electrochemical studies revealed metal-based oxidation of [Ru^II(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]⁺ (1⁺-3⁺) to [Ru^III(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L)]²⁺ (1²⁺-3²⁺); however, the electronic form of the first reduced state (1-3) could be better represented by its mixed Ru^II(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L^•-)/Ru^III(Ph-trpy)(Cl)(L^2-) state. Both native (1⁺-3⁺) and reduced (1-3) states exhibited weak lower energy transitions within the range of 1000-1200 nm. Further, [1]ClO₄-[3]ClO₄ delivered an electrochemical OER (oxygen evolution reaction) process in alkaline medium on immobilizing them to a carbon cloth support, which divulged an amplified water oxidation feature for [2]ClO₄ due to the presence of electron-donating methyl groups in the L2 backbone. The faster OER kinetics and high catalytic stability of [2]ClO₄ could also be rationalized by its lowest Tafel slope (85 mV dec^-1) and choronoamperometric experiment (stable up to 12 h), respectively, along with high Faradic efficiency (∼97%). A comparison of [2]ClO₄ with the reported analogous ruthenium complexes furnished its excellent intrinsic water oxidation activity.

Characterization of Reaction Intermediates Involved in the Water Oxidation Reaction of a Molecular Cobalt Complex

Molecular cobalt(III) complexes of bis-amidate-bis-alkoxide ligands, (Me₄N)[Co^III(L₁)] (1) and (Me₄N)[Co^III(L₂)] (2), are synthesized and assessed through a range of characterization techniques. Electrocatalytic water oxidation activity of the Co complexes in a 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution revealed a ligand-centered 2e^-/1H⁺ transfer event at 0.99 V followed by catalytic water oxidation (WO) at an onset overpotential of 450 mV. By contrast, 2 reveals a ligand-based oxidation event at 0.9 V and a WO onset overpotential of 430 mV. Constant potential electrolysis study and rinse test experiments confirm the homogeneous nature of the Co complexes during WO. The mechanistic investigation further shows a pH-dependent change in the reaction pathway. On the one hand, below pH 7.5, two consecutive ligand-based oxidation events result in the formation of a Co^III(L^2-)(OH) species, which, followed by a proton-coupled electron transfer reaction, generates a Co^IV(L^2-)(O) species that undergoes water nucleophilic attack to form the O-O bond. On the other hand, at higher pH, two ligand-based oxidation processes merge together and result in the formation of a Co^III(L^2-)(OH) complex, which reacts with OH^- to yield the O-O bond. The ligand-coordinated reaction intermediates involved in the WO reaction are thoroughly studied through an array of spectroscopic techniques, including UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. A mononuclear Co^III(OH) complex supported by the one-electron oxidized ligand, [Co^III(L^3-)(OH)]^-, a formal Co^IV(OH) complex, has been characterized, and the compound was shown to participate in the hydroxide rebound reaction, which is a functional mimic of Compound II of Cytochrome P450.

Modulating the electrocatalytic activity of mononuclear nickel complexes toward water oxidation by tertiary amine group

Water oxidation is the bottleneck of water splitting, which is a promising strategy for hydrogen production. Therefore, it is significant to develop efficient water oxidation catalysts. Herein, electrochemical water oxidation catalyzed by three nickel complexes, namely [Ni(bptn)(H₂O)](ClO₄)₂ (1), [Ni(mbptn)(CH₃CN)](ClO₄)₂ (2), and [Ni(tmbptn)(H₂O)](ClO₄)₂ (3) (bptn = 1,9-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,8-triazanonane, mbptn = 5-methyl-1,9-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,8-triazanonane, and tmbptn = 1,9-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,5,8-triazanonane), is studied under near-neutral condition (pH 9.0). Meanwhile, the homogeneous catalytic behaviors of the three mononuclear nickel complexes were investigated and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical method. Complex 1 stabilized by a pentadentate ligand with three N-H fragments homogeneously catalyzes water oxidation to oxygen with the lowest onset overpotential. Complex 2 stabilized by a similar ligand with two N-H groups and one N-CH₃ group exhibits relatively higher onset overpotential but higher catalytic current and turnover frequency. However, complex 3 with three N-CH₃ coordination environment shows the highest onset overpotential and the highest catalytic current at higher potential. Comparison of catalytic behaviors and ligand structure of the three complexes reveals that the methyl group on the polypyridine amine ligand affects the water oxidation activity of the complexes obviously. The electronic effect of N-CH₃ coordination environment leads to higher redox potential of the metal center and potential demand for water oxidation, while it leads to higher reaction activity of high-valent intermediates, which account for higher catalytic current and efficiency of water oxidation. This work reveals that electrocatalytic water oxidation performance of nickel complexes can be finely modulated by constructing suitable N-CH₃ coordination.

Energy Landscape for the Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Water by a Single-Site Oxomanganese(V) Porphyrin

A cationic manganese porphyrin, Mn^III-TDMImP, is an efficient, homogeneous, single-site water oxidation electrocatalyst at neutral pH. The measured turnover frequency for oxygen production is 32 s^-1. Mechanistic analyses indicate that Mn^V(O)(OH₂), the protonated form of the corresponding trans-Mn^V(O)₂ species, is generated from the Mn^III(OH₂)₂ precursor in a 2-e^- two-proton process and is responsible for O-O bond formation with a H₂O molecule. Chloride ion is a competitive substrate with H₂O for the Mn^V(O)(OH₂) oxidant, forming hypochlorous acid with a rate constant that is 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of water oxidation. The data allow the construction of an experimental energy landscape for this water oxidation catalysis process.

Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity of Molecular Copper Complexes: Effect of Redox-Active Ligands

Two molecular copper(II) complexes, (NMe₄)₂[Cu^II(L₁)] (1) and (NMe₄)₂[Cu^II(L₂)] (2), ligated by a N₂O₂ donor set of ligands [L₁ = N,N'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanamide), and L₂ = N,N'-(4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylene)bis(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanamide)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. An electrochemical study of 1 in a carbonate buffer at pH 9.2 revealed a reversible copper-centered redox couple at 0.51 V, followed by two ligand-based oxidation events at 1.02 and 1.25 V, and catalytic water oxidation at an onset potential of 1.28 V (overpotential of 580 mV). The electron-rich nature of the ligand likely supports access to high-valent copper species on the CV time scale. The results of the theoretical electronic structure investigation were quite consistent with the observed stepwise ligand-centered oxidation process. A constant potential electrolysis experiment with 1 reveals a catalytic current density of >2.4 mA cm^-2 for 3 h. A one-electron-oxidized species of 1, (NMe₄)[Cu^III(L₁)] (3), was isolated and characterized. Complex 2, on the contrary, revealed copper and ligand oxidation peaks at 0.505, 0.90, and 1.06 V, followed by an onset water oxidation (WO) at 1.26 V (overpotential of 560 mV). The findings show that the ligand-based oxidation reactions strongly depend upon the ligand's electronic substitution; however, such effects on the copper-centered redox couple and catalytic WO are minimal. The energetically favorable mechanism has been established through the theoretical calculation of stepwise reaction energies, which nicely explains the experimentally observed electron transfer events. Furthermore, as revealed by the theoretical calculations, the O-O bond formation process occurs through a water nucleophilic attack mechanism with an easily accessible reaction barrier. This study demonstrates the importance of redox-active ligands in the development of molecular late-transition-metal electrocatalysts for WO reactions.

Efficient homogeneous electrochemical water oxidation by a copper(ii) complex with a hexaaza macrotricyclic ligand

A copper complex [CuII(L)](ClO4)2 with a hexaaza macrotricyclic ligand is found to be an efficient homogeneous electrocatalyst for water oxidation with onset overpotential of 480 mV and a turnover frequency of 3.65 s−1.

Influence of the spatial distribution of copper sites on the selectivity of the oxygen reduction reaction

Moving towards a hydrogen economy raises the demand for affordable and efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. Cu-bmpa (bmpa = bis(2-picolyl)amine) is shown to have moderate activity, but poor selectivity for the 4-electron reduction of oxygen to water. To enhance the selectivity towards water formation, the cooperative effect of three Cu-bmpa binding sites in a single trinuclear complex is investigated. The catalytic currents in the presence of the trinuclear sites are lower, possibly due to the more rigid structure and therefore higher reorganization energies and/or slower diffusion rates of the catalytic species. Although the oxygen reduction activity of the trinuclear complexes is lower than that of mononuclear Cu-bmpa, the selectivity of the copper mediated oxygen reduction was significantly enhanced towards the 4-electron process due to a cooperative effect between three copper centers that have been positioned in close proximity. These results indicate that the cooperativity between metal ions within biomimetic sites can greatly enhance the ORR selectivity.

Bioinspired Trinuclear Copper Catalyst for Water Oxidation with a Turnover Frequency up to 20000 s-1

Solar-powered water splitting is a dream reaction for constructing an artificial photosynthetic system for producing solar fuels. Natural photosystem II is a prototype template for research on artificial solar energy conversion by oxidizing water into molecular oxygen and supplying four electrons for fuel production. Although a range of synthetic molecular water oxidation catalysts have been developed, the understanding of O-O bond formation in this multielectron and multiproton catalytic process is limited, and thus water oxidation is still a big challenge. Herein, we report a trinuclear copper cluster that displays outstanding reactivity toward catalytic water oxidation inspired by multicopper oxidases (MCOs), which provides efficient catalytic four-electron reduction of O₂ to water. This synthetic mimic exhibits a turnover frequency of 20000 s^-1 in sodium bicarbonate solution, which is about 150 and 15 times higher than that of the mononuclear Cu catalyst (F-N₂O₂Cu, 131.6 s^-1) and binuclear Cu₂ complex (HappCu₂, 1375 s^-1), respectively. This work shows that the cooperation between multiple metals is an effective strategy to regulate the formation of O-O bond in water oxidation catalysis.

Electrochemical water oxidation by a copper complex with an N4-donor ligand under neutral conditions
