Surface-Grafted Polymeric Ionic Liquids with Tunable Morphology via In/Ex Situ Cross-linking Methods

Grafting of Poly(ionic liquid) Brushes through Fe0-Mediated Surface-Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization for Marine Antifouling

Surface-tethered poly(ionic liquid) brushes have attracted considerable attention in widespread fields, from bioengineering to marine antifouling. However, their applications have been constrained due to the poor polymerization efficiency and sophisticated operation process. In this work, we efficiently synthesized the poly(ionic liquid) brushes with unparalleled speed (up to 98 nm h-1) through Fe0-mediated surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (Fe0 SI-ATRP) while consuming only microliter of monomer solution under ambient conditions. We also demonstrated that poly(ionic liquid) brushes with gradient thickness and wettability were easily accessible by regulating the distance between the opposite plates of Fe0 SI-ATRP. Moreover, the resultant poly(ionic liquid) brushes presented excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (99.2%) and Bacillus subtilis (88.1%) after 24 h and low attachment for proteins and marine algae (≤5%) for over 2 weeks. This research provided pathways to the facile and controllable fabrication of poly(ionic liquid) materials for marine antifouling applications.

High-performance functional cellulose foam fabricated with theoretically optimized imidazolium salts for the efficient removal of ciprofloxacin

With the increasing requirements for sustainable development and environmental protection, the design and development of bio-adsorbent based on the widely sourced cellulose have attracted widespread attention. In this study, a polymeric imidazolium satls (PIMS) functionalized cellulose foam (CF@PIMS) was conveniently fabricated. It was then employed to efficiently remove ciprofloxacin (CIP). Three imidazolium salts containing phenyl groups that can lead to multiple interactions with CIP were elaborately designed and then screened through a combination of molecular simulation and removal experiments to acquire the most significant binding ability of CF@PIMS. Besides, the CF@PIMS retained the well-defined 3D network structure as well as high porosity (90.3 %) and total intrusion volume (6.05 mL g^-1) as the original cellulose foam (CF). Therefore, the adsorption capacity of CF@PIMS reached an astonishing value of 736.9 mg g^-1, nearly 10 times that of the CF. Furthermore, the pH-affected and ionic strength-affected adsorption experiments confirmed that the non-electrostatic interaction took on a critical significance in the adsorption. The reusability experiments showed that the recovery efficiency of CF@PIMS was higher than 75 % after 10 adsorption cycles. Thus, a high-potential method was proposed in terms of the design and preparation of functionalized bio-adsorbent to remove waste matters from samples of the environment.

Recent advances in bio-inspired ionic liquid-based interfacial materials from preparation to application

Natural creatures always display unique and charming functions, such as the adhesion of mussels and the lubrication of Nepenthes, to maintain their life activities. Bio-inspired interfacial materials infused with liquid, especially for ionic liquids (ILs), have been designed and prepared to meet the emerging and rising needs of human beings. In this review, we first summarize the recent development of bio-inspired IL-based interfacial materials (BILIMs), ranging from the synthesis strategy to the design principle. Then, we discuss the advanced applications of BILIMs from anti-adhesive aspects (e.g., anti-biofouling, anti-liquid fouling, and anti-solid fouling) to adhesive aspects (e.g., biological sensor, adhesive tape, and wound dressing). Finally, the current limitations and future prospects of BILIMs are provided to feed the actual needs.

Recent advances in poly(ionic liquid)s for biomedical application

Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are polymers containing ions in their side-chain or backbone, and the designability and outstanding physicochemical properties of PILs have attracted widespread attention from researchers. PILs have specific characteristics, including negligible vapor pressure, high thermal and chemical stability, non-flammability, and self-assembly capabilities. PILs can be well combined with advanced analytical instruments and technology and have made outstanding contributions to the development of biomedicine aiding in the continuous advancement of science and technology. Here we reviewed the advances of PILs in the biomedical field in the past five years with a focus on applications in proteomics, drug delivery, and development. This paper aims to engage pharmaceutical and biomedical scientists to full understand PILs and accelerate the progress from laboratory research to industrialization.

Cross-Linked Polymer Brushes Containing N-Halamine Groups for Antibacterial Surface Applications

Microbial contamination is a significant issue in various areas, especially in the food industry. In this study, to overcome microbial contamination, cross-linked polymer brushes containing N-halamine were synthesized, characterized, and investigated for antibacterial properties. The cross-linked polymer brushes with different N-halamine ratios were synthesized by in-situ cross-linking methods with reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a bifunctional cross-linker. The RAFT agent was immobilized on an amine-terminated silicon wafer surface and utilized in the surface-initiated RAFT polymerization of [N-(2-methyl-1-(4-methyl-2,5-dioxoimidazolidin-4-yl)propane-2-yl)acrylamide] (hydantoin acrylamide, HA), and N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide) (HPMA) monomers. Measurement of film thickness, contact angle, and surface morphology of the resulting surfaces were used to confirm the structural characteristics of cross-linked polymer brushes. The chlorine content of the three different surfaces was determined to be approximately 8-31 × 1013 atoms/cm2. At the same time, it was also observed that the activation-deactivation efficiency decreased during the recharge-discharge cycles. However, it was determined that the prepared N-halamine-containing cross-linked polymer brushes inactivated approximately 96% of Escherichia coli and 91% of Staphylococcus aureus. In conclusion, in the framework of this study, high-performance brush gels were produced that can be used on antibacterial surfaces.
