Reversible Molecule Interactions Enable Ultrastretchable and Recyclable Ionogels for Wearable Piezoionic Sensors

Ionogel-based piezoionic sensors feel motions and strains like human skin relying on reversible ion migrations under external mechanical stimulus and are of great importance to artificial intelligence. However, conventional ion-conductive polymers behave with degraded electrical and mechanical properties after thousands of strain cycles, and the discarded materials and devices become electronic wastes as well. Here, we develop ultrastretchable ionogels with superior electrical properties via the mediation of metal-organic frameworks, whose properties are attributed to reversible molecule interactions inside the material system. Ionogels present excellent mechanical properties with breaking elongation as high as 850%, exceeding most previously reported similar materials, and the high conductivity enables further application in sensor devices. In addition, our ionogels display superior recyclability because of the reversible physical and chemical interactions inside material molecules, which are eco-friendly to the environment. As a result, the ionogel-based piezoionic sensors deliver high sensitivity, flexibility, cyclic stability, and signal reliability, which are of great significance to wearable applications in human-motion detections such as throat vibration, facial expression, joint mobility, and finger movement. Our study paves the way for ultrastretchable and eco-friendly ionogel design for flexible electrochemical devices.

Graphitic carbon nitride-based electrochemical sensors: A comprehensive review of their synthesis, characterization, and applications

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has garnered much attention as a promising 2D material in the realm of electrochemical sensors. It contains a polymeric matrix that can serve as an economical and non-toxic electrode material for the detection of a diverse range of analytes. However, its performance is impeded by a relatively limited active surface area and inherent instability. Although electrochemistry involving metal-doped g-C3N4 nanomaterials is rapidly progressing, it remains relatively unexplored. The metal doping of g-C3N4 augments the electrochemically active surface area of the resulting electrode, which has the potential to significantly enhance electrode kinetics and bolster catalytic activity. Consequentially, the main objective of this review is to provide insight into the intricacies of synthesizing and characterizing metal-doped g-C3N4. Furthermore, we comprehensively delve into the fundamental attributes of electrochemical sensors based on metal-doped g-C3N4, with a specific focus on healthcare and environmental applications. These applications encompass a meticulous exploration of detecting biomolecules, drug molecules, and organic pollutants.

Electrochemical sensing mechanisms of neonicotinoid pesticides and recent progress in utilizing functional materials for electrochemical detection platforms

The excessive residue of neonicotinoid pesticides in the environment and food poses a severe threat to human health, necessitating the urgent development of a sensitive and efficient method for detecting trace amounts of these pesticides. Electrochemical sensors, characterized by their simplicity of operation, rapid response, low cost, strong selectivity, and high feasibility, have garnered significant attention for their immense potential in swiftly detecting trace target molecules. The detection capability of electrochemical sensors primarily relies on the catalytic activity of electrode materials towards the target analyte, efficient loading of biomolecular functionalities, and the effective conversion of interactions between the target analyte and its receptor into electrical signals. Electrode materials with superior performance play a crucial role in enhancing the detection capability of electrochemical sensors. With the continuous advancement of nanotechnology, particularly the widespread application of novel functional materials, there is paramount significance in broadening the applicability and expanding the detection range of pesticide sensors. This comprehensive review encapsulates the electrochemical detection mechanisms of neonicotinoid pesticides, providing detailed insights into the outstanding roles, advantages, and limitations of functional materials such as carbon-based materials, metal-organic framework materials, supramolecular materials, metal-based nanomaterials, as well as molecular imprinted materials, antibodies/antigens, and aptamers as molecular recognition elements in the construction of electrochemical sensors for neonicotinoid pesticides. Furthermore, prospects and challenges facing various electrochemical sensors based on functional materials for neonicotinoid pesticides are discussed, providing valuable insights for the future development and application of biosensors for simplified on-site detection of agricultural residues.

Machine learning-enhanced drug testing for simultaneous morphine and methadone detection in urinary biofluids

The simultaneous identification of drugs has considerable difficulties due to the intricate interplay of analytes and the interference present in biological matrices. In this study, we introduce an innovative electrochemical sensor that overcomes these hurdles, enabling the precise and simultaneous determination of morphine (MOR), methadone (MET), and uric acid (UA) in urine samples. The sensor harnesses the strategically adapted carbon nanotubes (CNT) modified with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets to ensure exceptional precision and sensitivity for the targeted analytes. Through systematic optimization of pivotal parameters, we attained accurate and quantitative measurements of the analytes within intricate matrices employing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) voltammetry technique. The sensor's performance was validated using 17 training and 12 test solutions, employing the widely acclaimed machine learning method, partial least squares (PLS), for predictive modeling. The root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) values for morphine, methadone, and uric acid were significantly low, measuring 0.1827 µM, 0.1951 µM, and 0.1584 µM, respectively, with corresponding root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values of 0.1925 µM, 0.2035 µM, and 0.1659 µM. These results showcased the robust resiliency and reliability of our predictive model. Our sensor's efficacy in real urine samples was demonstrated by the narrow range of relative standard deviation (RSD) values, ranging from 3.71 to 5.26%, and recovery percentages from 96 to 106%. This performance underscores the potential of the sensor for practical and clinical applications, offering precise measurements even in complex and variable biological matrices. The successful integration of g-C3N4-CNT nanocomposites and the robust PLS method has driven the evolution of sophisticated electrochemical sensors, initiating a transformative era in drug analysis.

Highly Accurate Determination of the Total Amount of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ in a Natural Water Environment Revealed by Dynamic Simulation and DFT Calculation: Benefit from the Electron Inverse Effect of Pt Nanoclusters over Defective g-C3N4

Although utilizing nanomaterial-modified electrodes for lead ion detection has achieved great success, most of them are carried out under acidic conditions and ignore the variation of Pb(II) speciation at different pH conditions, leading to the potential inaccuracy of Pb(II) detection in a neutral natural water environment. Thus, designing a novel catalyst with high accuracy for the detection of various forms of the total amount of Pb(II) (Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+) in neutral waters is significant. Herein, Pt nanoclusters (Pt NCs) were elaborately constructed and stabilized on the Co single-atom-doped g-C3N4 with abundant N vacancies (Pt NCs/VN-C3N4), which achieved the ultrasensitive detection (102.16 μM μA-1) of Pb(II) in neutral conditions. The dynamic simulation and theoretical calculations reveal that the parallel deposition of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ occurs on the electrode surface modified by Pt NCs/VN-C3N4, and the current peaks of Pb(II) are cocontributed by Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+ species. An "electron inverse" phenomenon in Pt NCs/VN-C3N4 from the VN-C3N4 substrate to Pt NCs endows Pt NCs in an electron-rich state, serving as active centers to promote rapid and efficient reduction for both Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+, facilitating the accurate detection of the total amount of Pb(II) in all forms in the actual water environment.

Regulation Strategy of Nanostructured Engineering on Indium-Based Materials for Electrocatalytic Conversion of CO2

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2 RR), as an emerging technology, can combine with sustainable energies to convert CO2 into high value-added products, providing an effective pathway to realize carbon neutrality. However, the high activation energy of CO2 , low mass transfer, and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) leads to the unsatisfied catalytic activity. Recently, Indium (In)-based materials have attracted significant attention in CO2 RR and a series of regulation strategies of nanostructured engineering are exploited to rationally design various advanced In-based electrocatalysts, which forces the necessary of a comprehensive and fundamental summary, but there is still a scarcity. Herein, this review provides a systematic discussion of the nanostructure engineering of In-based materials for the efficient electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuels. These efficient regulation strategies including morphology, size, composition, defects, surface modification, interfacial structure, alloying, and single-atom structure, are summarized for exploring the internal relationship between the CO2 RR performance and the physicochemical properties of In-based catalysts. The correlation of electronic structure and adsorption behavior of reaction intermediates are highlighted to gain in-depth understanding of catalytic reaction kinetics for CO2 RR. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities of In-based materials are proposed, which is expected to inspire the development of other effective catalysts for CO2 RR.

Highly Crystalline Poly(heptazine imide)-Based Carbonaceous Anodes for Ultralong Lifespan and Low-Temperature Sodium-Ion Batteries

Carbon nitrides with layered structures and scalable syntheses have emerged as potential anode choices for the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. However, the low crystallinity of materials synthesized through traditional thermal condensation leads to insufficient conductivity and poor cycling stability, which significantly hamper their practical applications. Herein, a facile salt-covering method was proposed for the synthesis of highly ordered crystalline C3N4-based all-carbon nanocomposites. The sealing environment created by this strategy leads to the formation of poly(heptazine imide) (PHI), the crystalline phase of C3N4, with extended π-conjugation and a fully condensed nanosheet structure. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations reveal the high crystallinity of C3N4 significantly reduces the energy barrier for electron transition and enables the generation of efficient charge transfer channels at the heterogeneous interface between carbon and C3N4. Accordingly, such nanocomposites present ultrastable cycling performances over 5000 cycles, with a high reversible capacity of 245.1 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 delivered. More importantly, they also exhibit an outstanding low-temperature capacity of 196.6 mAh g-1 at -20 °C. This work offers opportunities for the energy storage use of C3N4 and provides some clues for developing long-life and high-capacity anodes operated under extreme conditions.

Poly-1,3-dioxolane anchoring graphitic carbon nitride to achieve high-energy-density solid-state Li metal batteries

Solid-state Li metal batteries (SSLMBs) are promising solutions for the next-generation energy storage devices with high energy densities and safety. Accordingly, the advanced solid-state electrolytes are further needed to address the challenges-low ionic conductivity, poor interfacial compatibility and uncontrollably Li dendrites, boosting the electrochemical and safety performances of SSLMBs. Herein, a "flexible and rigid" strategy is proposed to enhance the electrochemical and mechanical properties of polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes. Specifically, the flexible poly-1,3-dioxolane (poly-DOL) and rigid graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) are coordinated by a coupling reaction to prepare g-C3N4-poly-DOL, which is further employed as the filler for the PEO matrix to fabricate a composite polymer electrolyte g-C3N4-pDOL-PEO. The flexible poly-DOL and rigid g-C3N4 together endow the PEO-based electrolyte with good interfacial stability, high ion-conductivity and strong mechanical strength. Consequently, the Li/g-C3N4-pDOL-PEO/LiFePO4 cell delivers high cyclability with a capacity retention ratio of 89.7 % after 150 cycles and an average Coulombic efficiency over 99.9 %, and, the Li/g-C3N4-pDOL-PEO/Li cell can stably cycle beyond 300 h at 0.2 mAh cm-2 with small polarization (13 mV). The "flexible and rigid" strategy coupling the polymer with the filler provides an effective electrolyte design for high-performance SSLMBs.

Modification Strategies for Development of 2D Material-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Nanoengineered phosphorus doped graphitic carbon nitride based ultrasensitive biosensing platform for Swine flu detection

In the present study, we developed an amino-polyindole modified phosphorus doped graphitic carbon nitride nanomaterial (APIN/P-g-C3N4) based immunosensing biochip for Serum amyloid A (SAA) biomarker towards early diagnosis of Swine flu. The P-g-C3N4 was synthesis via polycondensation and functionalized with APIN. Further, the biochip was fabricated by modifying the working area of SPE with APIN/P-g-C3N4 using drop cast method, APIN introduced the larger loading of -NH2 group moieties onto P-g-C3N4 matrix and benefitted to reinforced the biomolecules via covalent linkages. The monoclonal anti-SAA was conjugated onto APIN/P-g-C3N4/SPE using EDC-NHS chemistry and BSA was added for non-specific site blocking. The structural, chemical, composition and morphological characteristics of the synthesized, functionalized nanomaterial and fabricated biochips were investigated by XRD, XPS, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, FE-SEM and TEM techniques. Further, the electrochemical characterization and response studies of fabricated biochip were analyzed using the CV and DPV techniques. Based on the analytical performance of the proposed immunosensing biochip i.e. BSA/anti-SAA/APIN/P-g-C3N4/SPE, it is capable to detect SAA protein with ultra sensitivity of 79.5 μA log (mL ng-1) cm-2, ultralow limit of detection of 5 ng mL-1 and wider linear detection range of 5 ng mL-1-500 μg mL-1 with quick response time of 10 min. Moreover, the fabricated immunosensing biochips was used to analyse SAA protein in spiked serum samples and the achieved results demonstrated the good agreement with the electrochemical response observed in standard SAA protein samples in analytical solution. The proposed biochip can provide insights for developing a wide range of clinical screening tools for detecting various contagious diseases.

Carbon-Based Electrochemical (Bio)sensors for the Detection of Carbendazim: A Review

Carbendazim, a fungicide widely used in agriculture, has been classified as a hazardous chemical by the World Health Organization due to its environmental persistence. It is prohibited in several countries; therefore, detecting it in food and environmental samples is highly necessary. A reliable, rapid, and low-cost method uses electrochemical sensors and biosensors, especially those modified with carbon-based materials with good analytical performance. In this review, we summarize the use of carbon-based electrochemical (bio)sensors for detecting carbendazim in environmental and food matrixes, with a particular interest in the role of carbon materials. Focus on publications between 2018 and 2023 that have been describing the use of carbon nanotubes, carbon nitride, graphene, and its derivatives, and carbon-based materials as modifiers, emphasizing the analytical performance obtained, such as linear range, detection limit, selectivity, and the matrix where the detection was applied.

Carbon-Based Enzyme Mimetics for Electrochemical Biosensing

Natural enzymes are used as special reagents for the preparation of electrochemical (bio)sensors due to their ability to catalyze processes, improving the selectivity of detection. However, some drawbacks, such as denaturation in harsh experimental conditions and their rapid de- gradation, as well as the high cost and difficulties in recycling them, restrict their practical applications. Nowadays, the use of artificial enzymes, mostly based on nanomaterials, mimicking the functions of natural products, has been growing. These so-called nanozymes present several advantages over natural enzymes, such as enhanced stability, low cost, easy production, and rapid activity. These outstanding features are responsible for their widespread use in areas such as catalysis, energy, imaging, sensing, or biomedicine. These materials can be divided into two main groups: metal and carbon-based nanozymes. The latter provides additional advantages compared to metal nanozymes, i.e., stable and tuneable activity and good biocompatibility, mimicking enzyme activities such as those of peroxidase, catalase, oxidase, superoxide dismutase, nuclease, or phosphatase. In this review article, we have focused on the use of carbon-based nanozymes for the preparation of electrochemical (bio)sensors. The main features of the most recent applications have been revised and illustrated with examples selected from the literature over the last four years (since 2020).

1.89 $ kg-1 Lake-Water-Based Semisolid Electrolytes for Highly Efficient Energy Storage

Solid electrolytes with fast ion kinetics and superior mechanical properties are critical to electrochemical energy devices; however, how to design low-cost, high-performance solid electrolytes has become a critical challenge in the energy field, and significant progress has not been achieved until now. Here, lake-water-based semisolid electrolytes with a low cost of 1.89 $ kg^-1 have been put forward for the purpose of market promotion. By virtue of the palygorskite dopants and lake water source, the electrolytes display satisfying mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical properties as well as economic benefits. The application potential of electrolytes has been demonstrated by employing a polyelectrolyte with ionic conductivity of 0.82 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 in flexible supercapacitors. The as-assembled devices give a high energy density of 54.72 Wh kg^-1 and excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 94.8% over 20 000 cycles. The flexibility of devices has been verified through 5000 repetitive bending tests. Our work presents insight into the design of flexible solid electrolytes based on cheap and green raw materials.

Charge Transfer and Level Lifetime in Molecular Photon-Absorption upon the Quantum Impedance Lorentz Oscillator

On the strength of the new quantum impedance Lorentz oscillator (QILO) model, a charge-transfer method in molecular photon-absorption is proposed and imaged via the numerical simulations of 1- and 2-photon-absorption (1PA and 2PA) behaviors of the organic compounds LB3 and M4 in this paper. According to the frequencies at the peaks and the full width at half-maximums (FWHMs) of the linear absorptive spectra of the two compounds, we first calculate the effective quantum numbers before and after the electronic transitions. Thus, we obtain the molecular average dipole moments, i.e., 1.8728 × 10^-29 C·m (5.6145 D) for LB3 and 1.9626 × 10^-29 C·m (5.8838 D) for M4 in the ground state in the tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. Then, the molecular 2PA cross sections corresponding to wavelength are theoretically inferred and figured out by QILO. As a result, the theoretical cross sections turn out to be in good agreement with the experimental ones. Our results reveal such a charge-transfer image in 1PA near wavelength 425 nm, where an atomic electron of LB3 jumps from the ground-state ellipse orbit with the semimajor axis a_i = 1.2492 × 10^-10m = 1.2492 Å and semiminor axis b_i = 0.4363 Å to the excited-state circle (a_j = b_j = 2.5399 Å). In addition, during its 2PA process, the same transitional electron in the ground state is excited to the elliptic orbit with a_j = 2.5399 Å and b_j =1.3808 Å, in which the molecular dipole moment reaches as high as 3.4109 × 10^-29 C·m (10.2256 D). In addition, we obtain a level-lifetime formula with the microparticle collision idea of thermal motion, which indicates that the level lifetime is proportional (not inverse) to the damping coefficient or FWHM of an absorptive spectrum. The lifetimes of the two compounds at some excited states are calculated and presented. This formula may be used as an experimental method to verify 1PA and 2PA transition selection rules. The QILO model exhibits the advantage of simplifying the calculation complexity and reducing the high cost associated with the first principle in dealing with quantum properties of optoelectronic materials.

Dimensionality effects of g-C3N4 from wettability to solar light assisted self-cleaning and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Unique interfacial properties of 2D materials make them more functional than their bulk counterparts in a catalytic application. In the present study, bulk and 2D graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (bulk g-C₃N₄ and 2D-g-C₃N₄ NS) coated cotton fabrics and nickel foam electrode interfaces have been applied for solar light-driven self-cleaning of methyl orange (MO) dye and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Compared to bulk, 2D-g-C₃N₄ coated interfaces show higher surface roughness (1.094 > 0.803) and enhanced hydrophilicity (θ ∼ 32° < 62° for cotton fabric and θ ∼ 25° < 54° for Ni foam substrate) due to oxygen defect induction as confirmed from morphological (HR-TEM and AFM) and interfacial (XPS) characterizations. The self-remediation efficiencies for blank and bulk/2D-g-C₃N₄ coated cotton fabrics are estimated through colorimetric absorbance and average intensity changes. The self-cleaning efficiency for 2D-g-C₃N₄ NS coated cotton fabric is 87%, whereas the blank and bulk-coated fabric show 31% and 52% efficiency. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis determines the reaction intermediates for MO cleaning. 2D-g-C₃N₄ shows lower overpotential (108 mV) and onset potential (1.30 V) vs. RHE for 10 mA cm^-2 OER current density in 0.1 M KOH. Also, the decreased charge transfer resistance (R_CT = 12 Ω) and lower Tafel's slope (24 mV dec^-1) of 2D-g-C₃N₄ make it the most efficient OER catalyst over bulk-g-C₃N₄ and state-of-the-art material RuO₂. The pseudocapacitance behavior of OER governs the kinetics of electrode-electrolyte interaction through the electrical double layer (EDL) mechanism. The 2D electrocatalyst demonstrates long-term stability (retention ∼94%) and efficacy compared to commercial electrocatalysts.

Ratiometric electrochemical OR gate assay for NSCLC-derived exosomes

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common pathological type of LC and ranks as the leading cause of cancer deaths. Circulating exosomes have emerged as a valuable biomarker for the diagnosis of NSCLC, while the performance of current electrochemical assays for exosome detection is constrained by unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity. Here we integrated a ratiometric biosensor with an OR logic gate to form an assay for surface protein profiling of exosomes from clinical serum samples. By using the specific aptamers for recognition of clinically validated biomarkers (EpCAM and CEA), the assay enabled ultrasensitive detection of trace levels of NSCLC-derived exosomes in complex serum samples (15.1 particles μL^-1 within a linear range of 10²-10⁸ particles μL^-1). The assay outperformed the analysis of six serum biomarkers for the accurate diagnosis, staging, and prognosis of NSCLC, displaying a diagnostic sensitivity of 93.3% even at an early stage (Stage I). The assay provides an advanced tool for exosome quantification and facilitates exosome-based liquid biopsies for cancer management in clinics.

Highly Sensitive Artificial Skin Perception Enabled by a Bio-inspired Interface

Piezoionic strain sensors have attracted enormous attention in artificial skin perception because of high sensitivity, lightweight, and flexibility. However, their sensing properties are limited by a weak material interface based on physical adhesion, which usually leads to fast performance deterioration under mechanical conditions. In this work, a bio-inspired interface has been reported based on an in situ growth strategy and then utilized for piezoionic sensor assembly. The robust coupling interface provides fast kinetic of ion transfer and prevents interface slippage under external strains. The as-fabricated sensors give high sensing voltage with high sensitivity. It delivers excellent cycling stability with performance retention above 90% over thousands of bending cycles in air. Further, the sensors have been explored as an effective platform for skin perception, and many detections can be realized within our devices, such as skin touch, eye movement, cheek bulging, and finger movement.

Single-Particle Measurements: A Powerful Method for Investigating Electrochemical Reactions

The relationship between interface structure (e. g., the facet of the solid phase and the configuration of solvation) and the reactivity of the corresponding electrode is a critical issue in electrochemistry. Compared to macroscopic electrode measurements, electrochemical methods established on the single-particle scale have advantages in establishing the structure-property relationship. In recent years, great achievements have been made in electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalysis that allow the evolution and kinetics of electrodes to be understood by employing single-particle measurements. This concept aims to provide an overview of the update of single-particle measurements in related electrochemical processes. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects for the development and application of single-particle measurements are also discussed.

Controlled Synthesis of Nitro-Terminated Oligothiophene/Crystallinity-Improved g-C3N4 Heterojunctions for Enhanced Visible-Light Catalytic H2 Production

It is highly desired to explore closely contacted polymer semiconductor/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction photocatalysts with promoted photogenerated-carrier separation and extended visible-light response for efficient visible-light-driven H₂ production. Here, we first synthesized the nitro-terminated oligothiophene (OTh) by the controlled copolymerization of thiophene and 2-nitrothiophene monomers, then constructed the nitro-terminated oligothiophene/crystallinity-improved g-C₃N₄ (OTh/g-C₃N₄) heterojunctions by a grinding-induced combination strategy. The ratio-optimized 20OTh₅/g-C₃N₄ shows highly efficient H₂ production activity up to 3.63 mmol h^-1 g^-1 under visible-light irradiation, with ∼25.9-time enhancement compared to that of g-C₃N₄. As verified by time-resolved photoluminescence spectra, surface photovoltage spectra, and the fluorescence spectra related to •OH amounts, the improved photocatalytic activity is due to the promoted photogenerated-carrier transfer and separation in the heterojunctions and the expanded visible-light response. It is also confirmed that the controlled OTh chain length, improved g-C₃N₄ crystallinity, and tight interface contact dependent on the hydrogen bonds and N···S interactions between OTh and g-C₃N₄ are reasonable for enhanced photogenerated-carrier separation with the electron transfer from OTh to g-C₃N₄. This work illustrates a feasible strategy to construct efficient polymer semiconductor/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction photocatalysts for solar-light-driven H₂ production.

Architecture and Kinetic Studies of Photocatalytic H2O2 Generation and H2 Evolution through Regulation of Spatial Charge Transfer via Z-Scheme Path over a (001) Facet Engineered TiO2@MXene/B-g-C3N4 Ternary Hybrid

Spatial charge separation and migration are the critical shortcomings dominating the core energy conversion corridors of photocatalytic systems. Here, a biomimetic multi-interfacial architecture providing strong coupled interaction and rapid charge transmission for photostable and competent photocatalytic H2O2 production and H2 evolution is proposed. The triple-hybrid all-solid-state Z-scheme system was formed with the (001) facet exposed TiO2 nanosheets derived from MXene layers and B-g-C3N4 nanosheets (M/(001)TiO2@BCN) through an electrostatic self-assembly strategy with intimate electronic interaction due to Ti orbital modulation and proper stacking among the hybrids. The metallic and highly conductive MXene layers act as solid state electron mediators in the Z-scheme heterojunction that promote electron-hole separation and migration efficiency. Specifically, the MTBCN-12.5 composite provides optimum yield of H2O2 up to 1480.1 μmol h-1 g-1 and a H2 evolution rate of 408.4 μmol h-1 (with ACE 6.7%), which are 4 and 20 fold greater than the pristine BCN, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is systematically identified by the increased surface area, higher cathodic and anodic current densities of -1.01 and 2.27 mA cm-2, delayed charge recombination as supported by PL and EIS measurement, and excellent photostability. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is validated by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis, cyclic voltametric analysis, and the radical trapping experiment as detected by PL analysis. This research marks a substantial advancement and establishes the foundation for future design ideas in accelerating charge transfer.

MXenes Functionalized with Macrocyclic Hosts: From Molecular Design to Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene has aroused wide attention for its excellent physical and chemical properties. The interlayer engineering formed by layer-by-layer stacking of MXene nanosheets can be employed for molecular sieving and water purification by incorporating specific groups onto the exterior surface of MXene. Macrocyclic hosts exhibiting unique structural features and recognition ability can construct smart devices for external stimuli with reversible features between macrocycles and guests. On that basis, macrocyclic hosts can be anchored to MXene to provide numerous insights into their compositions and intercalation states. In this review, the MXene prepared based on macrocyclic hosts from molecular design to applications is highlighted. Various MXenes functionalized with macrocyclic hosts are empowered in functional membrane (including water purification, organic solvent nanofiltration, and electromagnetic shielding), photocatalysis, sensing, and adsorption (interactions with specific guest). Hopefully, this review can bring new inspiration to the design of multifunctional MXene-based materials and improving its practical applications.

Efficient Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by V-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Organic Contamination Remediation

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have been developed as an ideal pathway for completely eradication of recalcitrant organic pollutants from water environment. Herein, the V-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is rationally fabricated by one-step thermal polymerization method to activate PMS for contamination decontamination. The results demonstrate the V atoms are successfully integrated into the framework of g-C₃N₄, which can effectively improve light absorption intensity and enhance charge separation. The V-doped g-C₃N₄ displays superior catalytic performance for PMS activation. Moreover, the doping content has a great influence on the activation performances. The radical quenching experiments confirm •O₂^-, SO₄^•-, and h⁺ are the significant species in the catalytic reaction. This work would provide a feasible strategy to exploit efficient g-C₃N₄-based material for PMS activation.

Regulating the Electronic Configuration of Spinel Zinc Manganate Derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks: Controlled Synthesis and Application in Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In recent years, transition metal oxides have been considered as the most promising anode materials due to their high theoretical capacity, low price, and abundant natural reserves. Among them, zinc manganate is used as an electrode material for anodes, whose application is mostly hindered due to its poor ionic/electronic conductivity. In this work, a series of ZnMn₂O₄ (ZMO) are synthesized by a hydrothermal technique coordinated with a metal-organic framework-based high-temperature calcination process for their application as an anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Meanwhile, this study systematically explores the influence of carbon doping and the types of organic ligands and oxygen vacancies on the electrochemical properties of the synthesized ZMO. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental investigations reveal that the introduction of carbon and oxygen vacancies can enhance electronic conductivity, more active sites and faster Li⁺ adsorption, resulting in better electrochemical performances. As expected, all ZMOs with carbon doping (PMA-ZMO, MI-ZMO, and BDC-ZMO) derived from 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, 2-methylimidazole, and 1,4-dicarboxybenzene achieve outstanding electrochemical performance. Meanwhile, the introduction of oxygen vacancies can enhance the electronic conductivity and can significantly reduce the activation energy of Li⁺ transport, thereby accelerating the Li⁺ diffusion kinetics in the lithiation/delithiation process. Furthermore, an optimal ZMO anode material synthesized by 2-methylimidazole delivers a high reversible capacity of 1174.7 mA h g^-1 after 300 cycles at 0.1 A g^-1 and 600 mA h g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 after 300 cycles. After high-rate charge and discharge cycles, the specific capacity rapidly recovers to a value greater than the initial value, which proves the unusual activation and thereby an excellent rate property of the electrode. Hence, we conclude that ZMO provides potential application prospects as an anode electrode material for LIBs.

Microscopic Simulations of Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors

Electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are devices allowing the storage or production of electricity. They function through the adsorption of ions from an electrolyte on high-surface-area electrodes and are characterized by short charging/discharging times and long cycle-life compared to batteries. Microscopic simulations are now widely used to characterize the structural, dynamical, and adsorption properties of these devices, complementing electrochemical experiments and in situ spectroscopic analyses. In this review, we discuss the main families of simulation methods that have been developed and their application to the main family of EDLCs, which include nanoporous carbon electrodes. We focus on the adsorption of organic ions for electricity storage applications as well as aqueous systems in the context of blue energy harvesting and desalination. We finally provide perspectives for further improvement of the predictive power of simulations, in particular for future devices with complex electrode compositions.
