Interface-Dependent Selectivity in Plasmon-Driven Chemical Reactions

Plasmon-driven substitution of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid to 4-nitrothiophenol monitored by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Plasmon-driven reactions on plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) occur under significantly different conditions from those of classical organic synthesis and provide a promising pathway for enhancing the efficiency of various chemical processes. However, these reactions can also have undesirable effects, such as 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) deboronation. MPBA chemisorbs well to Ag NPs through its thiol group and can subsequently bind to diols, enabling the detection of various biological structures by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), but not upon its deboronation. To avoid this reaction, we investigated the experimental conditions of MPBA deboronation on Ag NPs by SERS. Our results showed that the level of deboronation strongly depends on both the morphology of the system and the excitation laser wavelength and power. In addition, we detected not only the expected products, namely thiophenol and biphenyl-4,4-dithiol, but also 4-nitrothiophenol (NTP). The crucial reagent for NTP formation was an oxidation product of hydroxylamine hydrochloride, the reduction agent used in Ag NP synthesis. Ultimately, this reaction was replicated by adding NaNO2 to the system, and its progress was monitored as a function of the laser power, thereby identifying a new reaction of plasmon-driven -B(OH)2 substitution for -NO2.

The paradox of thermal vs. non-thermal effects in plasmonic photocatalysis

The debate surrounding the roles of thermal and non-thermal pathways in plasmonic catalysis has captured the attention of researchers and sparked vibrant discussions within the scientific community. In this review, we embark on a thorough exploration of this intriguing discourse, starting from fundamental principles and culminating in a detailed understanding of the divergent viewpoints. We probe into the core of the debate by elucidating the behavior of excited charge carriers in illuminated plasmonic nanostructures, which serves as the foundation for the two opposing schools of thought. We present the key arguments and evidence put forth by proponents of both the non-thermal and thermal pathways, providing a perspective on their respective positions. Beyond the theoretical divide, we discussed the evolving methodologies used to unravel these mechanisms. We discuss the use of Arrhenius equations and their variations, shedding light on the ensuing debates about their applicability. Our review emphasizes the significance of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), investigating its role in collective charge oscillations and the decay dynamics that influence catalytic processes. We also talked about the nuances of activation energy, exploring its relationship with the nonlinearity of temperature and light intensity dependence on reaction rates. Additionally, we address the intricacies of catalyst surface temperature measurements and their implications in understanding light-triggered reaction dynamics. The review further discusses wavelength-dependent reaction rates, kinetic isotope effects, and competitive electron transfer reactions, offering an all-inclusive view of the field. This review not only maps the current landscape of plasmonic photocatalysis but also facilitates future explorations and innovations to unlock the full potential of plasmon-mediated catalysis, where synergistic approaches could lead to different vistas in chemical transformations.

Plasmon-driven chemical transformation of a secondary amide probed by surface enhanced Raman scattering

Plasmon-driven chemical conversion is gaining burgeoning interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we study the reactivity of N-methyl-4-sulfanylbenzamide (NMSB) at nanocavities of gold and silver nanoparticle aggregates under plasmonic excitation to gain understanding of the respective reaction mechanism. NMSB is a secondary amide, which is a frequent binding motive found in peptides and a common coupling product of organic molecules and biomolecules. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is used as a two-in-one in-situ spectroscopic tool to initiate the molecular transformation process and simultaneously monitor and analyze the reaction products. Supported by dissociative electron attachment (DEA) studies with the gas phase molecule, a hot electron-mediated conversion of NMSB to p-mercaptobenzamide and p-mercaptobenzonitrile is proposed at the plasmonic nanocavities. The reaction rate showed negligible dependence on the external temperature, ruling out the dominant role of heat in the chemical transformation at the plasmonic interface. This is reflected in the absence of a superlinear relationship between the reaction rate constant and the laser power density, and DEA and SERS studies indicate a hot-electron mediated pathway. We conclude that the overall reaction rate is limited by the availability of energetic hot electrons to the NMSB molecule.

Thermal modulation of surface-enhanced Raman scattering and plasmon-induced catalysis in Ag nanoparticle/ZnO microrod composites

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance and photocatalytic degradation of dye molecules absorbed on Ag nanoparticle-decorated ZnO microrods are investigated at 20 and 50 °C. The role of temperature in the mechanism is elucidated. This work provides insight into the optimization of temperature-dependent plasmon-induced catalysis using similar materials.

High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputter Deposition of Ag on Self-Assembled Au Nanoparticle Arrays at Low-Temperature Dewetting Conditions

Plasmons have facilitated diverse analytical applications due to the boosting signal detectability by hot spots. In practical applications, it is crucial to fabricate straightforward, large-scale, and reproducible plasmonic substrates. Dewetting treatment, via applying direct thermal annealing of metal films, has been used as a straightforward method in the fabrication of such plasmonic nanostructures. However, tailoring the evolution of the dewetting process of metal films poses considerable experimental complexities, mainly due to nanoscale structure formation. Here, we use grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering for the in situ investigation of the high-power impulse magnetron sputter deposition of Ag on self-assembled Au nanoparticle arrays at low-temperature dewetting conditions. This approach allows us to examine both the direct formation of binary Au/Ag nanostructure and the consequential impact of the dewetting process on the spatial arrangement of the bimetallic nanoparticles. It is observed that the dewetting at 100 °C is sufficient to favor the establishment of a homogenized structural configuration of bimetallic nanostructures, which is beneficial for localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). The fabricated metal nanostructures show potential application for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of rhodamine 6G molecules. As SERS platform, bimetallic nanostructures formed with dewetting conditions turn out to be superior to those without dewetting conditions. The method in this work is envisioned as a facile strategy for the fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures.

Coupling Nano and Atomic Electric Field Confinement for Robust Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a promising avenue for producing clean fuels and storing intermittent energy. However, challenges such as excessive OH- consumption and strong adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates hinder the development of alkaline OER. In this study, we propose a cooperative strategy by leveraging both nano-scale and atomically local electric fields for alkaline OER, demonstrated through the synthesis of Mn single atom doped CoP nanoneedles (Mn SA-CoP NNs). Finite element method simulations and density functional theory calculations predict that the nano-scale local electric field enriches OH- around the catalyst surface, while the atomically local electric field improves *O desorption. Experimental validation using in situ attenuated total reflection infrared and Raman spectroscopy confirms the effectiveness of the nano-scale and atomically electric fields. Mn SA-CoP NNs exhibit an ultra-low overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and stable operation over 100 hours at ~100 mA cm-2 during alkaline OER. This innovative strategy provides new insights for enhancing catalyst performance in energy conversion reactions.

Enhancement Factors: A Central Concept during 50 Years of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the core concepts around surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancement factors (EFs), including both theoretical and experimental considerations: EF definitions, the distinction between maximum and average EFs, EF distribution and hot-spot localization, EF measurement and its order of magnitude. We then highlight some of the current challenges in this field, focusing on a selection of topics that we feel are both topical and important: analyte-capture onto a SERS substrate, surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering, orientation/tensorial effects, and nonradiative effects. We hope this Perspective can provide a platform to reflect on the past 50 years of SERS and its future.

Key Factors for Controlling Plasmon-Induced Chemical Reactions on Metal Surfaces

Plasmon-induced chemical reactions based on direct interactions between the plasmons of metal nanostructures and molecules have attracted increasing attention as a means of efficiently utilizing sunlight. In recent years, achievements in complex synthetic reactions as well as simple dissociation reactions of gaseous molecules using plasmons have been reported. However, recent research progress has revealed that multiple factors govern plasmon-induced chemical reactions. This perspective provides an overview of the key factors that influence plasmon-induced chemical reactions on metal surfaces and discusses the difficulty of controlling the reactions, which is caused by the entanglement of the key factors. A strategy for designing plasmonic metal catalysts to achieve the desired reactions is also discussed based on the current understanding, and directions for further research are provided.

Generalised coupled-dipole model for core-satellite nanostructures

Plasmonic core-satellite nanostructures have recently attracted interest in photocatalytic applications. The core plasmonic nanoparticle acts like an antenna, funnelling incident light into the near-field region, where it excites the smaller satellite nanoparticles with resonantly enhanced absorption. Computer simulations of the optical absorption by such structures can prove challenging, even with state-of-the-art numerical methods, due to the large difference in size between core and satellite particles. We present a generalised coupled-dipole model that enables efficient computations of light absorption in such nanostructures, including those with many satellites. The method accurately predicts the local absorption in each satellite despite being two orders of magnitude weaker than the absorption in the core particle. We assess the range of applicability of this model by comparing the results against the superposition T-matrix method, a rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations that is much more resource-intensive and becomes impractical as the number of satellite particles increases.
