Plasticization of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) with an Oligomeric Polyester: Miscibility and Effect of the Microstructure and Plasticizer Distribution on Thermal and Mechanical Properties

Production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) from methane and volatile fatty acids: properties, metabolic routes and current trend

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biobased and biodegradable polymers that could effectively replace fossil-based and non-biodegradable plastics. However, their production is currently limited by the high production costs, mainly due to the costly carbon sources used, low productivity and quality of the materials produced. A potential solution lies in utilizing cheap and renewable carbon sources as the primary feedstock during the biological production of PHAs, paving the way for a completely sustainable and economically viable process. In this review, the opportunities and challenges related to the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates using methane and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as substrates were explored, with a focus on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate). The discussion reports the current knowledge about promising Type II methanotrophs, the impact of process parameters such as limiting nutrients, CH4:O2 ratio and temperature, the type of co-substrate and its concentration. Additionally, the strategies developed until now to enhance PHA production yields were also discussed.

Experimentally Determined Hansen Solubility Parameters of Biobased and Biodegradable Polyesters

Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of 15 commercially relevant biobased and biodegradable polyesters were experimentally determined by applying a novel approach to the classic solubility study method. In this approach, the extent of swelling in polymer films was determined using a simple equation based on the mass difference between swollen and nonswollen film samples to obtain normalized solvent uptake (N). Using N and HSPiP software, highly accurate HSP values were obtained for all 15 polyesters. Qualitative evaluation of the HSP values was conducted by predicting the miscibility of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with a novel lignin-based plasticizer (ethyl 3-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)propanoate, EP) with a relative energy difference (RED) less than 0.4. Additionally, an HSP-predicted plasticizer (di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, DA) with a larger RED (>0.7) was used to demonstrate the effects of less-miscible additives. Plasticized samples were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to determine the Tg depression, with EP showing linear Tg depression up to 50% plasticizer loading, whereas DA shows minimal Tg depression past 10% loading. Further analysis by POM reveals that the DA phase separates from both polymers at loadings as low as 2.5% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol % HHx) and 5% (PLA), while the EP phase separates at a much higher loading of 50% (PHB-co-HHx, 7 mol% HHx) and 30% (PLA).

Effect of oligomeric lactic acid plasticizer on the mechanical recycling of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)

Bioplastics such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) emerge as an interesting alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based plastics and as part of the solution their associated environmental issues. Nevertheless, end-of-life scenarios are still a major concern, especially within a circular economy framework. When feasible, mechanical recycling appears as the best alternative, since it saves raw materials and energy. However, the viability of mechanical recycling can be compromised by the degradation of the plastic during its use and during the recycling process and by the presence of certain additives. Consequently, the main objective of this work is to study the effect of accelerated ageing and mechanical recycling on the structure and properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)-based formulations. The obtained results suggest that accelerated ageing and mechanical recycling led only to a slight degradation of the pure PHBV material, along with small variations in the thermal and mechanical properties. However, the plasticized PHBV formulations showed a more severe degradation and increased thermal stability and stiffness, which could be result of the elimination of the plasticizer during the recycling. Overall, mechanical recycling seems to be an interesting valorization strategy for PHBV wastes, although especial attention should be paid to the additives present in the materials.

Development of Polyhydroxybutyrate-Based Packaging Films and Methods to Their Ultrasonic Welding

This study developed a technical task associated with the formation of welded joints based on biodegradable polymers and their subsequent physicochemical characterization. The primary objective was to establish the effect of the welding process and modification of natural poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with N,N-dibutylundecenoylamide (DBUA) as a plasticizing agent on the structure and properties of PHB-based biopolymer materials as well as the process and structure of welded joints formation using ultrasonic welding technique. The weldability of biodegradable layers based on PHB and PHB/DBUA mixture was ultrasonically welded and optimized using a standard Branson press-type installation. The effect of the DBUA plasticizer and welding process on the structure of PHB-based biodegradable material was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermomechanical analysis. The results confirmed that the DBUA acted as an effective plasticizer of PHB, contributing to lower crystallinity of the PHB/DBUA mixture (63%) in relation to the crystallinity degree of pure PHB film (69%). Ultrasonic welding resulted in an additional increase (approximately 8.5%) in the degree of crystallinity in the PHB/DBUA in relation to the initial PHB/DBUA mixture. The significant shift toward lower temperatures of the crystallization and melting peaks of PHB modified with DBUA were observed using DSC concerning pure PHB. The melt crystallization process of PHB was affected by welding treatment, and a shift toward higher temperature was observed compared with the unwelded PHB/DBUA sample. The butt-welded joints of biodegradable PHB/DBUA materials made using the ultrasonic method tested for tensile strength have damaged the area immediately outside the joining surface.

Visco-Elastic and Thermal Properties of Microbiologically Synthesized Polyhydroxyalkanoate Plasticized with Triethyl Citrate

The current research is devoted to the investigation of the plasticization of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) with triethyl citrate (TEC). Three different PHB or PHBV-based systems with 10, 20, and 30 wt.% of TEC were prepared by two-roll milling. The effect of TEC on the rheological, thermal, mechanical, and calorimetric properties of the developed compression-molded PHB and PHBV-based systems was determined. It was revealed that the addition of TEC significantly influenced the melting behavior of both polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), reducing their melting temperatures and decreasing viscosities. It was also revealed that all the investigated systems demonstrated less than 2% weight loss until 200 °C and rapid degradation did not occur until 240-260 °C in an oxidative environment. Apart from this, a remarkable increase (ca 2.5 times) in ultimate tensile deformation ε_B was observed by increasing the amount of TEC in either PHB or PHBV. A concomitant, considerable drop in ultimate strength σ_B and modulus of elasticity E was observed. Comparatively, the plasticization efficiency of TEC was greater in the case of PHBV.

Upgrading cardoon biomass into Polyhydroxybutyrate based blends: A holistic approach for the synthesis of biopolymers and additives

Cardoon, Cynara cardunculus L. represents a biorefinery crop with a great potential in the bioplastic field. This work investigates the valorization of different cardoon components into high added value products, finally recombined into novel upgraded bioplastics. Bioprocesses for Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and medium-chain-length Polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) production were set up starting from root inulin and seed oil respectively, highlighting the effect of process conditions on polymer properties. The ternary blend, in which the PHB polymer matrix was added with mcl-PHA and epoxidized cardoon oil, evidenced a synergic effect of both additives in modulating PHB structural and thermal properties, promoted by the physical interaction occurring among the components. This proof-of concept frames the paper in the holistic approach of circular economy applied to bioplastic production.

PHB Processability and Property Improvement with Linear-Chain Polyester Oligomers Used as Plasticizers

In 2021, global petroleum-based plastic production reached over 400 million metric tons (Mt), and the accumulation of these non-biodegradable plastics in the environment is a worldwide concern. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) offers many advantages over traditional petroleum-based plastics, being biobased, completely biodegradable, and non-toxic. However, its production and use are still challenging due to its low deformation capacity and narrow processing window. In this work, two linear-chain polyester oligomers were used as plasticizers to improve the processability and properties of PHB. Thermal analyses, XRD, and polarized optical microscopy were performed to evaluate the plasticizing effect on the PHB and the reflection on the mechanical behavior. Both oligomers acted as PHB plasticizers, with a reduction in T_g and T_m as a function of the plasticizer concentration, which can make it easier to handle the material in thermal processing and reduce the probability of thermal degradation. Plasticizer 2 proved to be the most promising between the two with an optimized condition of 20%, in which there was a decrease in elastic modulus of up to 72% and an increase in the maximum elongation of 467%.

Analytical Modeling of Stress Relaxation and Evaluation of the Activation Volume Variation: Effect of Temperature and Plasticizer Content for Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-3-hydroxyvalerate)

In this study, stress-relaxation tests that have been carried out at different temperatures (quite below the heat deflection temperature) on a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-3hydroxyvalerate) (PHB-HV) matrix containing different amounts of the acetyl tributyl citrate plasticizer (added at 5 and 10 wt %) are investigated. The analytical modeling of the stress relaxation behavior by the coupling of Eyring's approach and the Guiu and Pratt model is successful. The activation volume results achieved are very interesting; in fact, not only the dependence of the activation volume from temperature is confirmed (and it resulted in dependence from the α' relaxation temperature) but also, for the first time, the dependence of the activation volume from the plasticizer content is shown. In particular, the presence of a linear relationship between the activation volume and the plasticizer volume content is observed.

Properties of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/Polycaprolactone Polymer Mixtures Reinforced by Cellulose Nanocrystals: Experimental and Simulation Studies

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/polycaprolactone (PHBV/PCL) polymer mixtures reinforced by cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been obtained. To improve the CNC compatibility with the hydrophobic PHBV/PCL matrix, the CNC surface was modified by amphiphilic polymers, i.e., polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyacrylamide (PAM). The polymer composites were characterized by FTIR, DSC, TG, XRD, microscopy, BET surface area, and tensile testing. The morphological, sorption, thermal, and mechanical properties of the obtained composites have been studied. It was found out that with an increase in the CNC content in the composites, the porosity of the films increased, which was reflected in an increase in their specific surface areas and water sorption. An analysis of the IR spectra confirms that hydrogen bonds can be formed between the CNC hydroxyl- and the -CO- groups of PCL and PHBV. The thermal decomposition of CNC in the PHBV/PCL/CNC composites starts at a much higher temperature than the decomposition of pure CNC. It was revealed that CNCs can either induce crystallization and the polymer crystallite growth or act as a compatibilizer of a mixture of the polymers causing their amorphization. The CNC addition significantly reduces the elongation and strength of the composites, but changes Young's modulus insignificantly, i.e., the mechanical properties of the composites are retained under conditions of small linear deformations. A molecular-dynamics simulation of several systems, starting from simplest binary (solvent-polymer) and finishing with multi-component (CNC-polymer mixture-solvent) systems, has been made. It is concluded that the surface modification of CNCs with amphiphilic polymers makes it possible to obtain the CNC composites with hydrophobic polymer matrices.

Current Advances towards 4-Hydroxybutyrate Containing Polyhydroxyalkanoates Production for Biomedical Applications

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are polyesters having high promise in biomedical applications. Among different types of PHA, poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) is the only polymer that has received FDA approval for medical applications. However, most PHA producing microorganisms lack the ability to synthesize P4HB or PHA comprising 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB) monomer due to their absence of a 4HB monomer supplying pathway. Thus, most microorganisms require supplementation of 4HB precursors to synthesize 4HB polymers. However, usage of 4HB precursors incurs additional production cost. Therefore, researchers have adopted strategies to reduce the cost, such as utilizing low-cost substrate as well as constructing 4HB monomer supplying pathways in microorganisms. We herein summarize the biomedical applications of P4HB, the natural producers of 4HB polymer, and the various strategies that have been applied in producing 4HB polymers in non-4HB producing microorganisms. It is expected that the readers would gain a vivid idea on the different strategic developments in the field of 4HB polymer production.

What Is New in the Field of Industrial Wastes Conversion into Polyhydroxyalkanoates by Bacteria?

The rising global consumption and industrialization has resulted in increased food processing demand. Food industry generates a tremendous amount of waste which causes serious environmental issues. These problems have forced us to create strategies that will help to reduce the volume of waste and the contamination to the environment. Waste from food industries has great potential as substrates for value-added bioproducts. Among them, polyhydroxyalkanaotes (PHAs) have received considerable attention in recent years due to their comparable characteristics to common plastics. These biodegradable polyesters are produced by microorganisms during fermentation processes utilizing various carbon sources. Scale-up of PHA production is limited due to the cost of the carbon source metabolized by the microorganisms. Therefore, there is a growing need for the development of novel microbial processes using inexpensive carbon sources. Such substrates could be waste generated by the food industry and food service. The use of industrial waste streams for PHAs biosynthesis could transform PHA production into cheaper and more environmentally friendly bioprocess. This review collates in detail recent developments in the biosynthesis of various types of PHAs produced using waste derived from agrofood industries. Challenges associated with this production bioprocess were described, and new ways to overcome them were proposed.
