XAS Analysis of Reactions of (Arylimido)vanadium(V) Dichloride Complexes Containing Anionic NHC That Contains a Weakly Coordinating B(C6F5)3 Moiety (WCA-NHC) or Phenoxide Ligands with Al Alkyls: A Potential Ethylene Polymerization Catalyst with WCA-NHC Ligands

Co(III) complexes of the pentadentate NHC ligand PY4Im: carbene-induced trans influences and the non-disappearing 13C NMR peak

Co(III) complexes of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand PY4Im (PY4Im = (1,3-bis(bis(2-pyridyl)methyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)) having the general formula [(PY4Im)Co(X)](ClO4)n (X = NCMe; n = 3: OH-, N3-, NCS-, ONO-, F-; n = 2: O2CO2-, n = 1; (N3-)3, n = 0) were prepared and structurally characterised. X-ray structural data are consistent with the presence of a trans influence due to the coordinated carbene carbon, and this is also supported by computational results. 13C NMR spectra of the complexes did not display peaks corresponding to the carbene carbon, except in the case of the [(PY4Im)Co(O2CO)]+ cation, where a peak at δ = 170.21 ppm was observed. However, HMBC spectra allowed indirect determination of the chemical shifts of the carbene carbon in the remaining complexes, owing to the geometry of the PY4Im ligand. Calculated 13C chemical shifts for the complexes showed very good agreement with the experimental values for all but the carbene carbon atoms in all cases.

Promotion of B(C6F5)3 as Ligand for Titanium (or Vanadium) Catalysts in the Copolymerization of Ethylene and 1-Hexene: A Computational Study

Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to investigate the promotion of B(C₆F₅)₃ as a ligand for titanium (or vanadium) catalysts in ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reactions. The results reveal that (I) Ethylene insertion into Ti_B (with B(C₆F₅)₃ as a ligand ) is preferred over Ti_H, both thermodynamically and kinetically. (II) In Ti_H and Ti_B catalysts, the 2,1 insertion reaction (Ti_H21 and Ti_B21) is the primary pathway for 1-hexene insertion. Furthermore, the 1-hexene insertion reaction for Ti_B21 is favored over Ti_H21 and is easier to perform. Consequently, the entire ethylene and 1-hexene insertion reaction proceeds smoothly using the Ti_B catalyst to yield the final product. (III) Analogous to the Ti catalyst case, V_B (with B(C₆F₅)₃ as a ligand) is preferred over V_H for the entire ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reaction. Moreover, V_B exhibits higher reaction activity than Ti_B, thus agreeing with experimental results. Additionally, the electron localization function and global reactivity index analysis indicate that titanium (or vanadium) catalysts with B(C₆F₅)₃ as a ligand exhibit higher reactivity. Investigating the promotion of B(C₆F₅)₃ as a ligand for titanium (or vanadium) catalysts in ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization reactions will aid in designing novel catalysts and lead to more cost-effective polymerization production methods.

Coordination Structure of Samarium Diiodide in a Tetrahydrofuran-Water Mixture

Chemoselective reductive conversion of organic and inorganic compounds has been developed by the combination of samarium(II) diiodide (SmI₂) and water. Despite the extensive previous studies to elucidate the role of water in the reactivity of SmI₂, the direct structural data of the reactive Sm²⁺-water complexes, SmI₂(H₂O)_n, in an organic solvent-water mixture have not been reported experimentally so far. Herein, we performed the structure analysis of the Sm²⁺-water complex in tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of water by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy using high-energy X-rays (Sm K-edge, 46.8 keV). The analysis revealed the dissociation of the Sm²⁺-I bonds in the presence of ≥ eight equivalents of water in the THF-water mixture. The origin of the peak shift in the UV/visible absorption spectra after the addition of water into SmI₂/THF solution was proposed based on electron transitions simulated with time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations using optimized structures in THF or water. The obtained structural information provides the fundamental insights for elucidating the reactivity and chemoselectivity in the Sm²⁺-water complex system.

N-Heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene complexes of vanadium(III) and vanadium(V)

[VCl₃(THF)₃] offers a convenient entrance point into the chemistry of carbene stabilized V(III) complexes. Herein we report the paramagnetic mono- and biscarbene complexes [VCl₃(cAAC^Me)] 1, [VCl₃(cAAC^Me)(THF)] 1(thf), [VCl₃(IMes)] 2, [{VCl₂(IiPr^Me)(μ-Cl)}₂] 3, [VCl₃(IDipp)] 4, [VCl₃(SIDipp)] 5, [VCl₃(SIDipp)(THF)] 5(thf), [VCl₃(ItBu)] 6, [VCl₃(cAAC^Me)₂] 7 and [VCl₃(IiPr^Me)₂] 8. Reaction of 1 with MesMgCl, MesLi and LiNPh₂ afforded the complexes [VCl₂(Mes)(cAAC^Me)] 9, [cAAC^MeH]⁺[VCl₂Mes₂]^-10 and [VCl₂(NPh₂)(cAAC^Me)] 11. The V(V) complexes [V(O)Cl₃(IDipp)] 12 and [V(O)Cl₃(SIDipp)] 13 were selectively prepared from oxygen oxidation of 4 and 5. [V(O)Cl₃(IDipp)] 12 and [V(O)Cl₃(IMes)] react with isocyanates to yield the NHC-ligated imido complexes [V(N-p-CH₃C₆H₄)Cl₃(IDipp)] 14, [V(N-p-FC₆H₄)Cl₃(IDipp)] 15, [V(N-p-CH₃C₆H₄)Cl₃(SIDipp)] 16, [V(N-p-FC₆H₄)Cl₃(SIDipp)] 17, [V(N-p-CH₃C₆H₄)Cl₃(IMes)] 18 and [V(N-p-FC₆H₄)Cl₃(IMes)] 19.

Solution XAS Analysis for Reactions of Phenoxide-Modified (Arylimido)vanadium(V) Dichloride and (Oxo)vanadium(V) Complexes with Al Alkyls: Effect of Al Cocatalyst in Ethylene (Co)polymerization

V K-edge XANES (XANES = X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) spectra of the reaction solution of V(NAr)Cl2(OAr) (1, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3) with halogenated Al alkyls (Me2AlCl, Et2AlCl, EtAlCl2, 50 equiv) in toluene showed low energy shifts (2.6–3.6 eV on the basis of inflection point in the photon energy) in the edge absorption accompanying slight shift to low photon energy in the pre-edge peak (λmax values); a similar spectrum was observed when the reaction of 1 with Me2AlCl was conducted in n-hexane. These results strongly suggest a formation of similar vanadium(III) species irrespective of kind of Al alkyls and solvent (toluene or n-hexane). Significant low-energy shifts in the edge absorption accompanied with diminishing the strong pre-edge absorption were also observed when VOCl3 or VO(OiPr)3 was treated with Me2AlCl (10 equiv) in toluene, clearly indicating a formation of low oxidation state vanadium species accompanied with certain structural changes (from tetrahedral to octahedral) in solution.

Rhodium and Iridium Complexes of Anionic Thione and Selone Ligands Derived from Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The lithium salts of anionic N‐heterocyclic thiones and selones [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}Li(toluene)] (1: E=S; 2: E=Se; WCA=B(C₆F₅)₃, IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene), which contain a weakly coordinating anionic (WCA) borate moiety in the imidazole backbone were reacted with Me₃SiCl, to furnish the silylated adducts (WCA‐IDipp)ESiMe₃ (3: E=S; 4: E=Se). The reaction of the latter with [(η⁵‐C₅Me₅)MCl₂]₂ (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the rhodium(III) and iridium(III) half‐sandwich complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}MCl(η⁵‐C₅Me₅)] (5–8). The direct reaction of the lithium salts 1 and 2 with a half or a full equivalent of [M(COD)Cl]₂ (M=Rh, Ir) afforded the monometallic complexes [{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M(COD)] (9–12) or the bimetallic complexes [μ₂‐{(WCA‐IDipp)E}M₂(COD)₂(μ₂‐Cl)] (13–16), respectively. The bonding situation in these complexes has been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing thiolate or selenolate ligand character with negligible metal‐chalcogen π‐interaction.

Mesoionic Carbenes in Low- to High-Valent Vanadium Chemistry

We report the synthesis of vanadium(V) oxo complex 1 with a pincer-type dianionic mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand L1 and the general formula [VOCl(L1)]. A comparison of the structural (SC-XRD), electronic (UV-vis), and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) properties of 1 with the benzimidazolinylidene congener 2 (general formula [VOCl(L2)]) shows that the MIC is a stronger donor also for early transition metals with low d-electron population. Since electrochemical studies revealed both complexes to be reversibly reduced, the stronger donor character of MICs was not only demonstrated for the vanadium(V) but also for the vanadium(IV) oxidation state by isolating the reduced vanadium(IV) complexes [Co(Cp*)2][1] and [Co(Cp*)2][2] ([Co(Cp*)2] = decamethylcobaltocenium). The electronic structures of the compounds were investigated by computational methods. Complex 1 was found to be a moderate precursor for salt metathesis reactions, showing selective reactivity toward phenolates or secondary amides, but not toward primary amides and phosphides, thiophenols, or aryls/alkyls donors. Deoxygenation with electron-rich phosphines failed to give the desired vanadium(III) complex. However, treatment of the deprotonated ligand precursor with vanadium(III) trichloride resulted in the clean formation of the corresponding MIC vanadium(III) complex 6, which undergoes a clean two-electron oxidation with organic azides yielding the corresponding imido complexes. The reaction with TMS-N3 did not afford a nitrido complex, but instead the imido complex 10. This study reveals that, contrary to popular belief, MICs are capable of supporting early transition-metal complexes in a variety of oxidation states, thus making them promising candidates for the activation of small molecules and redox catalysis.

Heterobimetallic Coinage Metal-Ruthenium Complexes Supported by Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The lithium complexes [(WCA‐NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N‐heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating borate moiety (WCA‐NHC, WCA=B(C₆F₅)₃, NHC=IDipp=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene) were used for the preparation of silver(I) or copper(I) WCA‐NHC complexes. While the reactions in THF with AgCl or CuCl afforded anionic mono‐ and dicarbene complexes with solvated lithium counterions [Li(THF)_n]⁺ (n=3, 4), the reactions in toluene proceeded with elimination of LiCl and formation of the neutral phosphine and arene complexes [(WCA‐NHC)M(PPh₃)] and [(WCA‐NHC)M(η²‐toluene)] (M=Ag, Cu). The latter were used for the preparation of chlorido‐ and iodido‐bridged heterobimetallic Ag/Ru and Cu/Ru complexes [(WCA‐NHC)M(μ‐X)₂Ru(PPh₃)(η⁶‐p‐cymene)] (M=Ag, Cu, X=Cl; M=Ag, X=I). Surprisingly, these complexes resisted the elimination of CuCl, AgCl, or AgI, precluding WCA‐NHC transmetalation.

Halogen Complexes of Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The lithium complexes [(WCA-NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating anionic borate moiety (WCA-NHC) reacted with iodine, bromine, or CCl4 to afford the zwitterionic 2-halogenoimidazolium borates (WCA-NHC)X (X=I, Br, Cl; WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 , B{3,5-C6 H3 (CF3 )2 }3 ; NHC=IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, or NHC=IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). The iodine derivative (WCA-IDipp)I (WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 ) formed several complexes of the type (WCA-IDipp)I⋅L (L=C6 H5 Cl, C6 H5 Me, CH3 CN, THF, ONMe3 ), revealing its ability to act as an efficient halogen bond donor, which was also exploited for the preparation of hypervalent bis(carbene)iodine(I) complexes of the type [(WCA-IDipp)I(NHC)] and [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)I(WCA-NHC)] (NHC=IDipp, IMes). The corresponding bromine complex [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)2 Br] was isolated as a rare example of a hypervalent (10-Br-2) system. DFT calculations reveal that London dispersion contributes significantly to the stability of the bis(carbene)halogen(I) complexes, and the bonding was further analyzed by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis.

Stabilization of a bismuth–bismuth double bond by anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes

Anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes have been employed for the isolation of the first dicarbene–dibismuth complex; the resulting dibismuthene features a trans-bent geometry with a Bi–Bi double bond and short intramolecular Bi–C_ipso contacts.

Solution XANES and EXAFS analysis of active species of titanium, vanadium complex catalysts in ethylene polymerisation/dimerisation and syndiospecific styrene polymerisation

Mechanistic studies in homogeneous catalysis through the solution transition metal K Edge XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and EXAFS (Extended X-ray absorption fine structure) analysis for vanadium and titanium complex catalysts for ethylene polymerisation/dimerization, and syndiospecific styrene polymerisation, including interpretation of the XANES spectra, have been introduced. The core excitation spectra of the complexes based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) can be used to interpret the Ti and V K-edge features and to extract information on the electronic structure from the XANES spectra. Theoretical calculations and experimental XAS analysis should have great potential for analysing the active species.

Solution X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) for Analysis of Catalytically Active Species in Reactions with Ethylene by Homogeneous (Imido)vanadium(V) Complexes—Al Cocatalyst Systems

Solution V K-edge XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) analysis of vanadium(V) complexes containing both imido ligands and anionic ancillary donor ligands (L) of type, V(NR)(L)X2 (R = Ar, Ad (1-adamantyl); Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; X = Cl, Me, L = 2-(ArNCH2)C5H4N, OAr, WCA-NHC, and 2-(2’-benzimidazolyl)pyridine; WCA-NHC = anionic NHCs containing weak coordinating B(C6F5)3), which catalyze ethylene dimerization and/or polymerization in the presence of Al cocatalysts, has been explored. Different catalytically actives species with different oxidation states were formed depending upon the Al cocatalyst (MAO, Me2AlCl, AliBu3, etc.) and the anionic ancillary donor ligand employed. The method is useful for obtainment of the direct information of the active species (oxidation state, basic framework around the centered metal) in solution, and for better understanding in catalysis mechanism and organometallic as well as coordination chemistry.
