Abstract
Cyclopentene skeletons are ubiquitous in natural products and small molecule drugs. The (3 + 2) cycloaddition of cyclopropanes and alkynes represents an efficient and atom-economic strategy for synthesizing these structures. However, the types of substituents on cyclopropane and alkyne used in previous works show evident limitations, restricting the application of this type of reaction to some extent. Herein, we report a broad-scope (3 + 2) cycloaddition of cyclopropanes and alkynes catalyzed by boronyl radicals. In this method, various substrates, such as mono-, di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted cyclopropanes, as well as mono- and disubstituted alkynes, were compatible with up to 98% isolated yield.

Abstract
We describe a method for the synthesis of various 2-silyloxy-2-norbornen-7-ones by exploiting the specific reactivity of the 1,4-bis(silyloxy)-1,3-cyclopentadiene framework, which is generated by the silylation of a 2,2-disubstituted-1,3-cyclopentanedione bearing a picolinoyloxy group at the 2' position of its C-2 side chain. The release of the acyloxy group during the reaction generates carbocations that are then attacked by silyloxy-substituted carbons in the 1,4-bis(silyloxy)-1,3-cyclopentadiene moiety skeleton, forming a 4,5-cis-fused ring skeleton. Skeletal rearrangement of the bicyclic core results in the formation of the corresponding 2-silyloxy-2-norbornen-7-one. This novel transformation of 1,3-cyclopentanedione moieties can be used to synthesise other cyclopentenone-fused bicyclic frameworks.

Abstract
A CuBr-mediated direct insertion of alkenes into unstrained ring 2-aryl-1,3-indandiones is reported, which provides a one-carbon ring expansion strategy for the synthesis of 1,4-naphthoquinones. Entirely differing from the existing reports, the alkenes herein behave as C1 units to participate in annulation reactions. This transformation provides a facile route to access a class of highly functionalized 1,4-naphthoquinones with good yields, good functional-group tolerance and high atom-economy. Further research on the application of this reaction is currently underway in our laboratory.

Abstract
Five-membered carbocycles are ubiquitously found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and other classes of organic compounds. Within this category, cyclopentenes deserve special attention due to their prevalence as targets and as well as key intermediates for synthesizing more complex molecules. Herein, we offer an overview summarizing some significant recent advances in the catalytic assembly of this structural motif. A great variety of synthetic methodologies and strategies are covered, including transition metal-catalyzed or organocatalyzed processes. Both inter- and intramolecular transformations are documented. On this ground, our expertise in the application of C-H functionalization reactions oriented towards the formation of this ring and its subsequent selective functionalization is embedded.

Abstract
One-carbon homologation reactions based on one-carbon insertion into the N-O bond of heterocycles have received tremendous interest over the past decades. However, these protocols have to rely on the use of hazardous and not easily accessible diazo compounds as precursors, and examples of the relevant asymmetric catalysis have not been reported. Here we show that a copper-catalyzed intermolecular formal (5 + 1) annulation of 1,5-diynes with 1,2,5-oxadiazoles involving one-carbon insertion into the heterocyclic N-O bond via non-diazo approach. This method enables practical and atom-economic synthesis of valuable pyrrole-substituted oxadiazines in generally moderate to good yields under mild reaction conditions. In addition, the possibility of such an asymmetric formal (5 + 1) annulation also emerges.

Abstract
We report a cobalt-catalyzed Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement of gem-disubstituted allylarenes that generates fluoroalkane products with isolated yields up to 84 %. Modification of the counteranion of the N-fluoropyridinium oxidant suggests the substrates undergo nucleophilic fluorination during the reaction. Subjecting the substrates to other known metal-mediated hydrofluorination procedures did not lead to observable 1,2-aryl migration. Thus, indicating the unique ability of these cobalt-catalyzed conditions to generate a sufficiently reactive electrophilic intermediate capable of promoting this Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement.

Abstract
The chemistry of small ring compounds is an intriguing subject in organic chemistry. As the smallest stable cyclic aliphatic ketones, cyclobutanones have garnered tremendous attention owing to their intrinsic high reactivity such as transition-metal catalyzed C-C bond cleavage. In this context, transition-metal catalyzed formal cycloaddition of cyclobutanones via a "cut and sew" strategy has gained marvelous advances. In contrast, an alternative reaction paradigm, i.e., transition-metal catalyzed ring-opening reactions of cyclobutanones, is still underdeveloped. This feature article aims to summarize our efforts in developing enantioselective palladium-catalyzed ring-opening/coupling reactions and recently emerging nickel-catalyzed ring-opening/reductive coupling reactions of cyclobutanones with a tethered aryl halide. The possible mechanisms are briefly showcased and the advantages and limitations of each strategy as well as their synthetic applications in the synthesis of natural products or bioactive compounds are presented.

Abstract
A conceptually new methodology to give unusual cyclization products from usual migration substrates was disclosed. The highly complex and structurally important and valuable spirocyclic compounds were produced through radical addition, intramolecular cyclization and ring opening instead of usual migration to the di-functionalization products of olefins. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism was proposed based on a series of mechanistic studies including radical trapping, radical clock, verification experiments of intermediates, isotope labeling and KIE experiments.

Abstract
The development of preparative methods for the synthesis of four-membered carbocycles is gaining increasing importance due to the widespread utility of cyclic compounds in medicinal chemistry. Herein, we report the development of a new methodology for the production of spirocyclic epoxides and aziridines containing a cyclobutane motif. In a two-step one-pot process, a bicyclo[1.1.0]butyl sulfoxide is lithiated and added to a ketone, aldehyde or imine, and the resulting intermediate is cross-coupled with an aryl triflate through C-C σ-bond alkoxy- or aminopalladation with concomitant epoxide or aziridine formation. After careful optimization, a remarkably efficient reaction was conceived that tolerated a broad variety of both aromatic and aliphatic substrates. Lastly, through several high yielding ring-opening reactions, we demonstrated the excellent applicability of the products as modular building blocks for the introduction of three-dimensional structures into target molecules.

Abstract
Herein, we report a green cascade approach to prepare a variety of diastereoselective polysubstituted cyclopentene derivatives through metal-free oxidative [2 + 1 + 1 + 1] annulation of aldehydes and methylene nitriles. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the reaction underwent a four-step cascade reaction including air oxidation and Michael addition to obtain the final product. This reaction features readily available starting materials, transition metal-free, eco-friendly operations, gram-scale syntheses, and wide functional group tolerance. The methodology may be useful for the construction of polysubstituted cyano-cyclopentene heterocycles with potential biological activity.

Abstract
Herein, we describe a unique one-carbon ring-expansion strategy to access multi-substituted 2-indanones from benzocyclobutenones and styrene-type olefins. The use of a cationic "ligandless" rhodium catalyst was the key for both high reactivity and selectivity towards the (4+1) product. Broad functional group tolerance, a good substrate scope, and scalability have been demonstrated. Computation studies reveal that the origin of the (4+1) selectivity is due to a facile β-H elimination pathway that reduces the overall barrier of the turnover-limiting C-C reductive elimination step.

Abstract
Cyclopentenes and indenes are important structural scaffolds in synthetic, medical, and material chemistry. Cyclization of alkynes via remote C-H functionalization is an appealing approach to construct these motifs due to its high efficiency and step-economy. Herein, a traceless directing group strategy was designed to reverse the regioselectivity of radical addition which enabled an unprecedented photocatalytic sulfonylcarbocyclization of terminal alkynes by forming C-C bond on inert C(sp3 )-H bond. It offers a facile access to decorated cyclopentenes and indenes under mild conditions. The resultant products could be converted into a set of valuable molecular scaffolds, including a key intermediate of AM-6226. Mechanistic experiments suggest a radical cascade pathway comprising a Markovnikov-type sulfonylation, 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer, 5-endo-trig cyclization, and β-elimination. This study lays further groundwork for the use of anti-Baldwin 5-endo-trig radical cyclization in rapidly assembling five-membered carbocycles.

Abstract
![]()
The catalyzed desymmetrizative
ring expansion of alkenylcyclobutanols
promoted by halofunctionalization of the alkene moiety with N-bromosuccinimide has been experimentally and computationally
studied. The reaction yields highly enantioenriched cyclopentanones
bearing two all-carbon quaternary stereocenters, one of them being
generated in the rearrangement of the cyclobutane ring and the other
by enantioselective desymmetrization. The reaction is competitive
with the formation of a spiroepoxide, but it turns completely selective
toward the cyclopentanone when a chiral bisphosphonium magnesium salt
is employed as a catalyst. Mechanistic studies support the formation
of an ion pair leading to a complex with only a unit of phosphoric
acid, which is the resting state of the catalytic cycle. Calculations
reproduce in an excellent way the observed reactivity and predict
the effect exerted by the substituents of the aromatic ring linked
to the double bond. The computational studies also revealed the reaction
as a highly asynchronous concerted process taking place as one kinetic
step but in two stages: (i) halogenation of the double bond and (ii)
rearrangement of the cyclobutane. No intermediates are present in
the reaction as energy minima. The experimental scope of the reaction
further confirms the predictions for the observed reactivity and selectivity.

Abstract
Represented is a CuX2- or I2-promoted ring-opening dual halogenation of cyclopropenones with saturated oxygen heterocycles, providing an efficient method for the synthesis of 3-haloacrylates. The ring-opening reaction enables the construction of two C-X (X = Cl, Br, or I) bonds and a C-O bond as well as the cleavage of two C-O bonds and a C-C bond in a single step. This protocol is highly atom economical, has an excellent substrate scope, and exhibits the ability for gram-scale reaction.

Abstract
![]()
Herein, we report a reaction that
selectively generates 3-arylpyridine
and quinoline motifs by inserting aryl carbynyl cation equivalents
into pyrrole and indole cores, respectively. By employing α-chlorodiazirines
as thermal precursors to the corresponding chlorocarbenes, the traditional
haloform-based protocol central to the parent Ciamician-Dennstedt
rearrangement can be modified to directly afford 3-(hetero)arylpyridines
and quinolines. Chlorodiazirines are conveniently prepared in a single
step by oxidation of commercially available amidinium salts. Selectivity
as a function of pyrrole substitution pattern was examined, and a
predictive model based on steric effects is put forward, with DFT
calculations supporting a selectivity-determining cyclopropanation
step. Computations surprisingly indicate that the stereochemistry
of cyclopropanation is of little consequence to the subsequent electrocyclic
ring opening that forges the pyridine core, due to a compensatory
homoaromatic stabilization that counterbalances orbital-controlled
torquoselectivity effects. The utility of this skeletal transform
is further demonstrated through the preparation of quinolinophanes
and the skeletal editing of pharmaceutically relevant pyrroles.

Abstract
Diastereoselective synthesis of the trans-decalin-based α-hydroxyl butanone spirocarbocycles bearing all-carbon quaternary stereogenic centers has been achieved via Norrish-Yang photocyclization of trans-decalin-substituted-2,3-butanediones using daylight. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that this diastereoselective reaction is affected by both substrate conformation and intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The developed chemistry could be applied to synthesizing the derivatives of the trans-decalin-based biologically important natural products.

Abstract
Nitrooxy organosulfates derived from terpenes (NOSTP) represent an important class of products formed between anthropogenic pollution (e.g., SO2 and NOx) and natural emissions. NOSTP compounds have been consistently detected in atmospheric environments under varying urban influences. Their chemical linkages to both anthroposphere and biosphere make them valuable markers for tracking anthroposphere-biosphere interactions. However, their quantification, formation, and transformation kinetics in atmospheric aerosols are hindered due to the lack of NOSTP standards. In this work, we developed two routes for the first concise chemical synthesis of eight NOSTP from terpenes including α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, limonaketone, and β-caryophyllene. Subsequently, six of the synthesized NOSTP were for the first time positively identified in ambient aerosol samples, clarifying certain misidentifications in previous studies. More significantly, the availability of authentic standards allows irrefutable observation of three carbon skeleton-rearranged NOSTP, two derived from α-pinene, and one derived from β-caryophyllene, revealing the occurrence of previously unrecognized transformation pathways in the formation of NOSTP. Two synthesized NOSTP from β-pinene and limonene could not be detected, likely due to rapid hydrolysis of their immediate hydroxynitrate precursors outcompeting sulfation. Such mechanistic evidence is valuable in understanding the atmospheric chemistry of NOSTP and related compounds. This work demonstrates the usefulness of authentic standards in probing the NOSTP formation mechanisms in the atmosphere. Comparison of NOSTP ambient samples collected from four Chinese cities in two winter months indicates that anthropogenic chemical factors could outcompete terpene emissions in the formation of NOSTP.

Abstract
Efficient asymmetric synthesis of a collection of small molecules with structural diversity is highly important to drug discovery. Herein, three distinct types of chiral cyclic compounds were accessible by enantioselective catalysis and sequential transformations. Highly regio- and enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition of (E)-alkenyloxindoles with the internal C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond of N-allenamides was achieved with N,N'-dioxide/Ni(OTf)2 as the catalyst. Various optically active spirocyclobutyl oxindole derivatives were obtained under mild conditions. Moreover, formal [4+2] cycloaddition products occurring at the terminal C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond of N-allenamides, dihydropyran-fused indoles, were afforded by a stereospecific sequential transformation with the assistance of a catalytic amount of Cu(OTf)2. In contrast, performing the conversion under air led to the formation of γ-lactones via the water-involved deprotection and rearrangement process. Experimental studies and DFT calculations were performed to probe the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Brønsted acid catalyzed formal [4 + 4]-, [4 + 3]-, and [4 + 2]-cycloadditions of donor-acceptor cyclobutenes, cyclopropenes, and siloxyalkynes with benzopyrylium ions are reported. [4 + 2]-cyclization/deMayo-type ring-extension cascade processes produce highly functionalized benzocyclooctatrienes, benzocycloheptatrienes, and 2-naphthols in good to excellent yields and selectivities. Moreover, the optical purity of reactant donor-acceptor cyclobutenes is fully retained during the cascade. The 1,3-dicarbonyl product framework of the reaction products provides opportunities for salen-type ligand syntheses and the construction of fused pyrazoles and isoxazoles that reveal a novel rotamer-diastereoisomerism.

Abstract
Divergence in the PBu3-catalyzed [3+2] annulation of phenacylmalononitriles with allenoates, controlled by the γ-substitution on allenoates, offers a tunable synthesis of multifunctionalized cyclopentene carboxamides and cyclopentenols. An unprecedented formation of cyclopentene carboxamide was observed when allenic esters bearing a substitution at the γ-position were employed, while unsubstituted allenoates produced cyclopentenols. The former reaction likely involves a Michael/aldol/nucleophilic cyclization sequence in a domino manner.

Abstract
The intramolecular Csp3–H and/or C–C bond amination is very important in modern organic synthesis due to its efficiency in the construction of diversified N-heterocycles. Herein, we report a novel intramolecular cyclization of alkyl azides for the synthesis of cyclic imines and tertiary amines through selective Csp3–H and/or C–C bond cleavage. Two C–N single bonds or a C

N double bond are efficiently constructed in these transformations. The carbocation mechanism differs from the reported metal nitrene intermediates and therefore enables metal-free and new transformation. A novel intramolecular cyclization of alkyl azides for the synthesis of cyclic imines and tertiary amines has been developed. The aliphatic C–H or C–C bond was selectively cleaved with the efficient formation of two C–N single bonds or a CN double bond.![]()

Abstract
The expedient and stereoselective syntheses of small libraries of trifunctionalized cyclobutane scaffolds bearing an acid, an amine, and a third functional group are described. Starting from a single precursor, the readily available protected derivative of all-cis-2-amino-3-hydroxycyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid, cis-trans stereoisomers are obtained following an SN2-type reaction, while all-trans stereoisomers are obtained using the same strategy preceded by a C1 epimerization reaction.

Abstract
The reaction of the phosphinidene complex [Cp*P{W(CO)5 }2 ] (1 a) (Cp*=C5 Me5 ) with the anionic cyclo-Pn ligand complex [(η3 -P3 )Nb(ODipp)3 ]- (2, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) resulted in the formation of [{W(CO)5 }2 {μ3 ,η3:1:1 -P4 Cp*}Nb(ODipp)3 ]- (3), which represents an unprecedented example of a ring expansion of a polyphosphorus-ligand complex initiated by a phosphinidene complex. Furthermore, the reaction of the pnictinidene complexes [Cp*E{W(CO)5 }2 ] (E=P: 1 a, As: 1 b) with the neutral complex [Cp'''Co(η4 -P4 )] (Cp'''=1,2,4-tBu3 C5 H2 ) led to a cyclo-P4 E ring (E=P, As) through the insertion of the pentel atom into the cyclo-P4 ligand. Starting from 1 a, the two isomers [Cp'''Co(μ3 ,η4:1:1 -P5 Cp*){W(CO)5 }2 ] (5 a,b), and from 1 b, the three isomers [Cp'''Co(μ3 ,η4:1:1 -AsP4 Cp*){W(CO)5 }2 ] (6 a-c) with unprecedented cyclo-P4 E ligands (E=P, As) were isolated. The complexes 6 a-c represent unique examples of ring expansions which lead to new mixed five-membered cyclo-P4 As ligands. The possible reaction pathways for the formation of 5 a,b and 6 a-c were investigated by a combination of temperature-dependent 31 P{1 H} NMR studies and DFT calculations.
