Abstract
In this work, a quantitative structure-antioxidant activity relationship of flavonoids was performed using a machine learning (ML) method. To achieve lipid-soluble, highly antioxidant flavonoids, 398 molecular structures with various substitute groups were designed based on the flavonoid skeleton. The hydrogen dissociation energies (ΔG1, ΔG2, and ΔG3) related to multiple hydrogen atom transfer processes and the solubility parameter (δ) of flavonoids were calculated using molecular simulation. The group decomposition results and the calculated antioxidant parameters constituted the ML data set. The artificial neural network and random forest models were constructed to predict and analyze the contribution of the substitute groups and positions to the antioxidant activity. The results showed the hydroxyl group at positions B4', B5', and B6' and the branched alkyl group at position C3 in the flavonoid skeleton were the optimal choice for improving antioxidant activity and compatibility with apolar organic materials. Compared to the pyrogallol group-grafted flavonoid, the designed potent flavonoid decreased ΔG1 and δ by 2.2 and 15.1%, respectively, while ΔG2 and ΔG3 kept the favorable lower values. These findings suggest that an efficient flavonoid prefers multiple ortho-phenolic hydroxyl groups and suitable sites with hydrophobic groups. The combination of molecular simulation and the ML method may offer a new research approach for the molecular design of novel antioxidants.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acids are plant secondary metabolites, chemically-polyphenols with similar biological activity, formed through the esterification of quinic acid and hydrocinnamic acid moieties. They are best known for their high concentration in coffee and other dietary sources and the antioxidant properties that they exhibit. Both chlorogenic acids and plant extracts containing significant amounts of the compounds show promising in vitro activity against colorectal cancer. With coffee being the most popular drink in the world, and colorectal cancer at an unfortunate peak in incidence and mortality, the mechanisms through which the anti-tumorigenic effect of chlorogenic acids could be functionalized for CRC prevention seem appealing to study. Therefore, this review aims to enable a better understanding of the modes of action of chlorogenic acids in combating carcinogenesis, with a focus on cell cycle arrest, the induction of apoptosis, and the modulation of Wnt, Pi3K/Akt, and MAPK signal transduction pathways, alongside the reduction in the number of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and the counterintuitive beneficial elevation of oxidative stress.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds represent a group of secondary metabolites that serve essential functions in plants. Beyond their positive impact on plants, these phenolic metabolites, often referred to as polyphenols, possess a range of biological properties that can promote skin health. Scientific research indicates that topically using phenolics derived from plants can be advantageous, but their activity and stability highly depend on storage of the source material and the extraction method. These compounds have the ability to relieve symptoms and hinder the progression of different skin diseases. Because they come from natural sources and have minimal toxicity, phenolic compounds show potential in addressing the causes and effects of skin aging, skin diseases, and various types of skin damage, such as wounds and burns. Hence, this review provides extensive information on the particular crops from which by-product phenolic compounds can be sourced, also emphasizing the need to conduct research according to proper plant material storage practices and the choice of the best extracting method, along with an examination of their specific functions and the mechanisms by which they act to protect skin.

Abstract
Rosmarinic acid (RA) is reported in separate studies to be either an inducer or reliever of oxidative stress, and this contradiction has not been resolved. In this study, we present a comprehensive examination of the radical scavenging activity of RA using density functional theory calculations in comparison with experimental data. In model physiological media, RA exhibited strong HO• radical scavenging activity with overall rate constant values of 2.89 × 1010 and 3.86 × 109 M-1 s-1. RA is anticipated to exhibit excellent scavenging properties for HOO• in an aqueous environment (koverall = 3.18 × 108 M-1 s-1, ≈2446 times of Trolox) following the hydrogen transfer and single electron transfer pathways of the dianion state. The neutral form of the activity is equally noteworthy in a lipid environment (koverall = 3.16 × 104 M-1 s-1) by the formal hydrogen transfer mechanism of the O6(7,15,16)-H bonds. Chelation with RA may prevent Cu(II) from reduction by the ascorbic acid anion (AA-), hence blocking the OIL-1 pathway, suggesting that RA in an aqueous environment also serves as an OIL-1 antioxidant. The computational findings exhibit strong concurrence with the experimental observations, indicating that RA possesses a significant efficacy as a radical scavenger in physiological environments.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenol found mainly in coffee and tea, exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects at the gastrointestinal level. However, although CGA is known to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), its effects on the CNS are still unknown. Oligodendrocytes (OLs), the myelin-forming cells in the CNS, are the main target in demyelinating neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We evaluated the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic roles of CGA in M03-13, an immortalized human OL cell line. We found that CGA reduces intracellular superoxide ions, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NADPH oxidases (NOXs) /dual oxidase 2 (DUOX2) protein levels. The stimulation of M03-13 cells with TNFα activates the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cell (NF-kB) pathway, leading to an increase in superoxide ion, NOXs/DUOX2 and phosphorylated extracellular regulated protein kinase (pERK) levels. In addition, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) stimulation induces caspase 8 activation and the cleavage of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP). All these TNFα-induced effects are reversed by CGA. Furthermore, CGA induces a blockade of proliferation, driving cells to differentiation, resulting in increased mRNA levels of myelin basic protein (MBP) and proteolipid protein (PLP), which are major markers of mature OLs. Overall, these data suggest that dietary supplementation with this polyphenol could play an important beneficial role in autoimmune neuroinflammatory diseases such as MS.

Abstract
Alkylresorcinols are a group of natural phenolic compounds found in various foods such as whole grain cereals, bread, and certain fruits. They are known for their beneficial health effects, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of two typical alkylresorcinols namely olivetol and olivetolic acid (Oli and OliA) under physiological conditions. The free radical scavenging capacity of Oli and OliA toward oxygenated free radicals (HO˙ and HOO˙ radicals) was investigated using thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. The results revealed that Oli and OliA are potent scavengers of HO˙ radical in both polar and lipid media, acting exclusively via the FHT (formal hydrogen transfer) mechanism. Moreover, they demonstrated excellent scavenging activity toward HOO˙ radical in water via the SET (single electron transfer) mechanism, outperforming the common antioxidant BHT. In lipid media, Oli and OliA showed moderate scavenging activity toward HOO˙ radical via the FHT mechanism. Significant prooxidant potential of OliA- was also demonstrated through the formation of complexes with copper ions. Additionally, docking studies indicate that the compounds exhibited a good affinity for ROS-producing enzymes, including myeloperoxidase (MP), cytochrome P450 (CP450), lipoxygenase (LOX), and xanthine oxidase (XO), highlighting their potential as natural antioxidants with promising therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Caffeoylquinic (5-CQA) and feruloylquinic (5-FQA) acids, found in coffee and other plant sources, are known to exhibit diverse biological activities, including potential antioxidant effects. However, the underlying mechanisms of these phenolic compounds remain elusive. This paper investigates the capacity and mode of action of 5-CQA and 5-FQA as natural antioxidants acting as hydroperoxyl radical scavengers and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitors. The hydroperoxyl radical scavenging potential was investigated using thermodynamic and kinetic calculations based on the DFT method, taking into account the influence of physiological conditions. Blind docking and molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the inhibition capacity toward the XO enzyme. The results showed that 5-CQA and 5-FQA exhibit potent hydroperoxyl radical scavenging capacity in both polar and lipidic physiological media, with rate constants higher than those of common antioxidants, such as Trolox and BHT. 5-CQA carrying catechol moiety was found to be more potent than 5-FQA in both physiological environments. Furthermore, both compounds show good affinity with the active site of the XO enzyme and form stable complexes. The hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism was found to be exclusive in lipid media, while both HAT and SET (single electron transfer) mechanisms are possible in water. 5-CQA and 5-FQA may, therefore, be considered potent natural antioxidants with potential health benefits.

Abstract
Oxidative stress makes it difficult to preserve food and negatively affect the applicability of polymeric packaging. It is typically caused by an excess of free radicals, and it is dangerous to human health, resulting in the onset and development of diseases. The antioxidant ability and activity of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Irganox (Irg) as synthetic antioxidant additives were studied. Three different antioxidant mechanisms were considered and compared by calculating bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), proton dissociation enthalpy (PDE), proton affinity (PA), and electron transfer enthalpy (ETE) values. Two density functional theory (DFT) methods were used, M05-2X and M06-2X with the 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set in gas phase. Both additives can be used to protect pre-processed food products and polymeric packaging from oxidative stress related material deterioration. By comparing the two studied compounds, it was found that EDTA has a higher antioxidant potential than Irganox. To the best of our knowledge several studies have been carried out to understand the antioxidant potential of various natural and synthetic species, but EDTA and Irganox were not compared and investigated before. These additives can be used to protect pre-processed food products and polymeric packaging and prevent material deterioration caused by oxidative stress.

Abstract
In recent years, research on the antioxidant activity of natural antioxidants has become more and more popular. Polyphenols are a large number of natural antioxidants in plants. This paper selected three common polyphenols to study their antioxidant activity based on quantum chemistry theory. This experiment hopes to provide a theoretical basis for the further development of polyphenol health food with strong antioxidant activity. Three polyphenols resveratrol, liquiritigenin, and isoliquiritigenin were optimized at the level of B3lyp/6-311G (d, p), and the single point energy was calculated with B3lyp/6-311 + + G (2d, 2p). The phenol hydroxyl bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), proton dissociation enthalpy (PDE), proton affinity (PA), and electron transfer enthalpy (ETE) were calculated in different phase states study the antioxidant mechanism. Draw the frontier molecular orbital and conduct dynamic simulation analysis scavenging · OH and · OOH to explore the most possible active sites in different phenolic hydroxyl sites. The bond length, dihedral angle, BDE, IP, PDE, PA and ETE were compared to speculate the antioxidant activity: Resveratrol > isoliquiritigenin > liquiritigenin. By analyzing the frontier molecular orbital and dynamic simulation results, it is speculated that the phenolic hydroxyl groups at C4', C4', and C4 are the most likely active sites of resveratrol, liquiritigenin, and isoliquiritigenin, respectively. In different phase states, the three compounds showed the same antioxidant activity, and the phenolic hydroxyl activities of the three compounds were different at different sites.

Abstract
Caffeic acid is a phenolic secondary metabolite from plants, which is known for its antioxidant properties. The effective mitigation of methanol-induced oxidative stress by caffeic acid depends on the direct radical scavenging as well as the formation of new metabolites via oxidative degradation. Herein, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the oxidative degradation pathway of caffeic acid in the presence of radical CH3O• and its isomer, •CH2OH are discussed for the first time, employing density functional theory (DFT). The direct radical scavenging activity of caffeic acid against these radicals is verified via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and radical adduct formation (RAF) mechanisms. HAT is predicted to be more feasible than RAF mechanism as per the computed data. Additionally, energetic details of the proposed oxidative degradation pathway of radical adduct intermediates toward the formation of a cyclic metabolite is analyzed. Kinetic studies indicated a significant tunneling contribution to the H abstraction pathways having high activation barriers. Further, our results imply that the newly formed metabolites exhibit comparable antioxidant activity with that of caffeic acid.

Abstract
The antiradical capacity and mechanisms of two representative coumestan-type compounds, namely isosojagol (Iso) and phaseoul (Pha), were examined using quantum chemistry calculations and computational kinetics methods. From a thermodynamic point of view, the 18CH groups of the prenyl substituent have been found to be the most suitable sites for radical attacks via the formal hydrogen transfer (FHT) mechanism. However, the kinetic study revealed that the reaction at these CH groups is slow and does not contribute to the overall reactivity of these compounds, which the phenolic groups mainly define. The kinetic study also revealed that the studied compounds are good free radical scavengers with overall rate coefficients as high as recognized antioxidants such as carnosic acid, artepillin C, thymol, and rosefuran.

Abstract
In this study, a total of 302 molecular structures of phenylnaphthylamine antioxidants based on N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine and N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine skeletons with various substituents were modeled by exhaustive methods. Antioxidant parameters, including the hydrogen dissociation energy, solubility parameter, and binding energy, were calculated through molecular simulations. Then, a group decomposition scheme was determined to decompose 302 antioxidants. The antioxidant parameters and decomposition results constituted machine-learning data sets. Using an artificial neural network model, a correlation coefficient between the predicted and true values above 0.88 and an average relative error within 6% were achieved. Random forest models were used to analyze the factors affecting antioxidant activity from chemical and physical perspectives; the results showed that amino and alkyl groups were conducive to improving antioxidant performance. Moreover, substituent positions 1, 7, and 10 of N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine and 3, 7, and 10 of N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine were found to be the optimal positions for modifications to improve antioxidant activity. Two potentially efficient phenylnaphthylamine antioxidant structures were proposed and their antioxidant parameters were also calculated; the hydrogen dissociation energy and solubility parameter decreased by more than 9% and 7%, respectively, whereas the binding energy increased by more than 16% compared with the benchmark of N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine. These results indicate that molecular simulation and machine learning could provide alternative tools for the molecular design of new antioxidants.

Abstract
A two-step protecting-group-free protocol for the synthesis of 3'-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4-O-2'-cycloflavan (1) and concise total synthesis of 4'-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4-O-2'-cycloflavan (8) enabled by a PTSA triggered bioinspired olefin isomerization/hemiacetalization/dehydration/[3 + 3]-type cycloaddition cascade reaction are reported. The successful synthesis of cycloflavan 8 along with GIAO 13C NMR calculations of flavan-4-ol 9 and cycloflavan 8 indicated the misassignment of the flavonoid isolated previously and realized the revision of its actual structure.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a naturally occurring non-flavonoid polyphenol found in green coffee beans, teas, certain fruits, and vegetables, that exerts antiviral, antitumor, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects. Several in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that CGA can protect against toxicities induced by chemicals of different classes such as fungal/bacterial toxins, pharmaceuticals, metals, pesticides, etc., by preservation of cell survival via reducing overproduction of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species and suppressed pro-apoptotic signaling. CGA antioxidant effects mediated through the Nrf2-heme oxygenase-1 signaling pathway were shown to enhance the levels of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferases, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase as well as glutathione content. Also, CGA could suppress inflammation via inhibition of toll-like receptor 4 and MyD88, and the phosphorylation of inhibitor of kappa B and p65 subunit of NF-κB, resulting in diminished levels of downstream inflammatory factors including interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, macrophage inflammatory protein 2, cyclooxygenase-2, and prostaglandin E2. Moreover, CGA inhibited apoptosis by reducing Bax, cytochrome C, and caspase 3 and 9 expression while increasing Bcl-2 levels. The present review discusses several mechanisms through which CGA may exert its protective role against such agents. Chemical and natural toxic agents affect human health. Phenolic antioxidant compounds can suppress free radical production and combat these toxins. Chlorogenic acid is a plant polyphenol present in the human diet and exerts strong antioxidant properties that can effectively help in the treatment of various toxicities.

Abstract
The effects of oxidation on protein digestion and transport in cooked abalone muscles were investigated using a combination of simulated digestion and everted-rat-gut-sac models for the first time. Boiling heat treatments caused protein oxidation in the abalone muscles, reflected by increases in the carbonyl group and disulfide bond contents, protein hydrophobicity and aggregation degree, as well as decreases in the free sulfhydryl group and amino acid contents. Protein oxidation significantly inhibited the degree of hydrolysis, digestion rate, and digestibility of the abalone muscles in the simulated digestion model. The results from the everted-rat-gut-sac model showed that amino acid and peptide transport levels from the digestion products of the cooked abalone muscles were lower than those of the uncooked samples. In contrast, the addition of antioxidants of bamboo leaves mitigated heat-treatment-induced protein oxidation, aggregation and increased hydrophobicity, and consequently improved abalone muscle protein digestibility and transport levels.

Abstract
Quantum-chemical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311 + + G(2d,2p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level were employed to study the relationship between the antioxidant properties and chemical structures of six dendrocandin (DDCD) analogues in the gas phase and two solvents (methanol and water). The hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), electron-transfer-proton-transfer (ET-PT), and sequential proton-loss-electron-transfer (SPLET) mechanisms are explored. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), reactivity indices (η, μ, ω, ω +, and ω - ), and molecular electrostatic potentials (MEPs) were also evaluated. The results suggest that the D ring plays an important role in mediating the antioxidant activity of DDCDs. For all the studied compounds, indicating that HAT was identified as the most favorable mechanism, whereas the SPLET mechanism was the most thermodynamically favorable pathway in polar solvents. The results of our study should aid in the development of new or modified antioxidant compounds. Abstract
Carnosic acid (CA), a phenolic diterpene and abietane-type compound, is a potent natural antioxidant with medical benefits. The present paper elucidates, for the first time, the kinetics and the exact mechanism of the peroxyl radical scavenging activity of CA in the gas phase and under physiological conditions. According to the obtained results, the reaction of CA with HOO• is significantly faster in aqueous solution than in the gas phase and nonpolar environments. The abstraction of the hydrogen atom from 2-OH is the decisive mechanism in the gas phase and nonpolar media, while both hydrogen abstraction (15%) and electron transfer (85%) mechanisms can take place in aqueous solution. The overall rate coefficient in water (4.73 × 106 M-1 s-1) is about 36 times higher than that of the reference antioxidant Trolox (1.30 × 105 M-1 s-1), suggesting that CA is a potent scavenger of peroxyl radicals in polar media.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is an essential element that intervenes in several plant metabolic processes. The olive tree, and its fruits and leaves, are known as a source of nutraceuticals since they are rich in biophenols. However, there is still a serious lack of data about biophenolic distribution in olive stems and roots under Mn fertilisation. In this context, our study aimed to examine the effects of Mn fertilisation on the biophenolic profile in the leaves, stems, and roots of the ‘Istarska bjelica’ olive cultivar. The experiment was set up in a greenhouse, during a period of five months, as a random block design consisting of three treatments with varying Mn concentrations in full-strength Hoagland’s nutrient solution (0.2 µM Mn, 12 µM Mn, and 24 µM Mn). The obtained results indicate that the amount of Mn in the examined olive plant tissues was significantly higher under 12 µM Mn and 24 µM Mn treatments compared to that of the 0.2 µM Mn treatment. While the concentration of biophenols varied in roots depending on the compound in question, a strong positive impact of the increased Mn concentration in nutrient solution (12 µM Mn and 24 µM Mn) on the concentrations of the main biophenolic compounds was observed in stems. The concentration of oleuropein in leaves almost doubled at 24 µM Mn, with the highest Mn concentration, as compared to the 0.2 µM Mn treatment. The obtained results led to the conclusion that the supply of Mn could enhance the concentration of some biologically active compounds in olives grown hydroponically, implying a critical need for further investigation of Mn fertilisation practices in the conventional olive farming system.

Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds are now widely studied using computational chemistry approaches, the most popular of which is Density Functional Theory. To ease this process, it is critical to identify the optimal level of theory in terms of both accuracy and resource usage—a challenge we tackle in this study. Eleven DFT functionals with varied Hartree–Fock exchange values, both global and range-separated hybrids, were combined with 14 differently augmented basis sets to calculate the reactivity indices of caffeic acid, a phenolic acid representative, and compare them to experimental data or a high-level of theory outcome. Aside from the main course, a validation of the widely used Janak’s theorem in the establishment of vertical ionization potential and vertical electron affinity was evaluated. To investigate what influences the values of the properties under consideration, linear regression models were developed and thoroughly discussed. The results were utilized to compute the scores, which let us determine the best and worst combinations and make broad suggestions on the final option. The study demonstrates that M06–2X/6–311G(d,p) is the best fit for such research, and, curiously, it is not necessarily essential to include a diffuse function to produce satisfactory results.

Abstract
There has been a growing interest in developing effective strategies to inhibit lipid oxidation in emulsified food products by utilization of natural phenolic antioxidants owing to their growing popularity over the past decades. However, due to the complexity of emulsified systems, the inhibition mechanism of phenolic antioxidants against lipid oxidation is rather complicated and not yet fully understood. In order to highlight the importance of polarity of phenolic antioxidants in emulsified systems according to the polar paradox, this review covers the recent progress on chemical, enzymatic, and chemoenzymatic lipophilization techniques used to modify the polarity of antioxidants. The partitioning behavior of phenolic antioxidants at the oil-water interface, which can be influenced by the presence of synthetic surfactants and/or antioxidant emulsifiers (e.g., polysaccharides, proteins, and phospholipids), is discussed. In addition, the emerging phenolic antioxidants among phenolic acids, flavonoids, tocopherols, and stilbenes applied in food emulsions are elaborated. As well, the interactions of polar-nonpolar antioxidants are stressed as a promising strategy to induce synergistic interactions at oil-water interface for improved oxidative stability of emulsions.

Abstract
Medicago lupulina is an ancient edible plant from the Fabaceae family. In this work, two eco-friendly methods for extraction of bioactive phenolics from M. lupulina were developed using mixtures of water with two non-toxic, skin- and environmentally-friendly polyol solvents: glycerol and polypropylene glycol. Ultrasound-assisted extractions were optimized using a Box–Behnken design. The independent variables were the concentration of organic solvent in water (X1), extraction temperature (X2) and time (X3), while the response was phenolic content. The optimum conditions for extraction of polyphenols were (X1, X2, X3): (45%, 70 °C, 60 min) and (10%, 80 °C, 60 min) for glycerol and polypropylene glycol extraction, respectively. The extracts prepared at optimum conditions were rich in phenolic compounds, mainly derivatives of apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin, caffeic and ferulic acid, as well as coumestrol. Their cosmeceutical and antidiabetic activity was tested. Both extracts demonstrated notable antioxidant, anti-lipoxygenase and anti-α-amylase activity. In addition to those activities, the glycerol extract efficiently inhibited protein coagulation, elastase and α-glucosidase activity. Glycerol present in the extract displayed enzyme-inhibiting activity in several assays and supported the action of the bioactive constituents. Thus, the optimized glycerol extract is a desirable candidate for direct incorporation in antidiabetic food supplements and cosmeceutical products.

Abstract
Two ferrocenyl derivatives, Fc-CA and Fc-FA, were synthesized by a condensation reaction between the amino ferrocene and hydroxycinnamic acids, that is, caffeic acid (CA) and ferulic acid (FA). The structures and purity of all compounds were characterized by 1H- and 13C NMR spectroscopies, Mass spectrometry (MS), and elemental analysis. The antioxidant properties of Fc-CA and Fc-FA and of its ligand were studied for free radical scavenging activity toward DPPH•, superoxide anion (O2•-), NO•, and ABTS•+ by UV-vis and electron spin resonance spectroscopies. The cytotoxicity of Fc-CA and Fc-FA against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells and MRC-5 human lung fibroblasts cell was higher than that of cisplatin. The geometry and electronic structures of all compounds were then simulated using density functional theory at M05-2X/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory. Thermodynamics of the free radical quenching reactions by common mechanisms reveal the higher antioxidant properties of the Fc-CA and Fc-FA in comparison to their ligands. An in-depth study of the free radical scavenging activity against HOO• and HO• radicals was performed for two of the most favorable and competitive mechanisms, the hydrogen transfer (either hydrogen atom transfer or proton-coupled electron transfer mechanisms) and the radical adduct formation. The in silico studies indicated that ferrocenyl derivatives exhibited prominent binding affinity to protein models in comparison to CA and FA. Their dock scores were notable at ligand binding sites of ERα, Erβ, and JAK2 proteins. Dock pose analysis also shed light into the possible mechanism of action for the studied compounds.

Abstract
Echinacea purpurea is used in herbal medicinal products for the prevention and treatment of the common cold, as well as for skin disorders and minor wounds. In this study, the efficiency of traditional maceration using water and ethanol was compared with the maceration using mixtures of water and glycerol, a non-toxic, biodegradable solvent from renewable sources. It was found that the glycerol-water mixtures were as effective as ethanol/water mixtures for the extraction of caffeic acid derivatives. All the prepared extracts demonstrated notable antiradical properties. Furthermore, an efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction using glycerol-water mixtures was developed using six independent variables. Their levels needed for the maximum extraction of caffeic acid derivatives were as follows: glycerol 90% (m/m), temperature 70 °C, ultrasound power 72 W, time 40 min, and ascorbic acid 0 mg/mL. Under the optimized conditions, ultrasound-assisted extraction was superior to maceration. It achieved significantly higher yields of phenolic acids in shorter extraction time. The presence of zinc in plant material may contribute to the beneficial effects of E. purpurea preparations. Since glycerol is a non-toxic solvent with humectant properties, the prepared extracts can be directly used for the preparation of cosmetics or oral pharmaceutical formulations without the need for solvent removal.

Abstract
2-substituted thiophene compounds with electron donating and electron withdrawing p-phenyl substitution were synthesized and studied their radical scavenging properties using DPPH assay and DFT method. It is shown that p-hydroxy and p-amino phenyl substituted compound exhibit radical scavenging activity. From DFT and radical scavenging studies, a correlation between IC50 with the bond dissociation enthalpy, proton affinity, ground state dipole moment and optical band gap of compound is found. Compounds 1-3 with electron withdrawing substituent (NO2, CN, Cl) do not show any radical scavenging properties, whereas compounds 6-7 with electron donating substituent (OH, NH2) show antiradical properties. Further, the antiradical activity is reduced drastically by replacing the -OH and -NH2 with methoxy and -N-alkylating group respectively in 6 and 7. The compound with p-hydroxy phenyl substitution, exhibits stronger antiradical activity as compared to the p-amino phenyl substitution due to smaller O-H bond dissociation energy as compared to the N-H bond. From DPPH and DFT studies, it is suggested that the radical scavenging activity in 2-substituted thiophene is occurred through proton transfer mechanism. The other possible SET, SPLET mechanisms are also corroborated. Abstract
Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as well as advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) and metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a key role in the development and progression of degenerative processes of body tissues, including skin. Natural antioxidant flavonoids could be beneficial in inhibiting AGEs’ formation and MMPs’ expression. In this study, the antioxidant activity of flavones (luteolin, apigenin, and chrysin) and flavonols (mirycetin, quercetin, and kaempferol) was compared with their inhibitory effects on both metalloproteinases’ (MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, MMP-13) and AGEs’ formation. Comparisons were performed taking into account the hydroxyl group arrangement and the physico-chemical parameters the binding dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), partition coefficient (log P), and topological polar surface area (TPSA). Increasing the number of hydroxyl groups led to a proportional enhancement of antioxidant activity while an inverse relationship was observed plotting the antioxidant activity vs. BDE and IP values. All flavonoids acted as AGEs, MMP-1, and MMP-13 inhibitors, but they were less effective against MMP-2 and MMP-9. The inhibition of MMP-1 seemed to be related to the TPSA values while high TPSA and low log P values seemed important conditions for inhibiting MMP-13. Overall, our data suggest that an estimation of flavonoid activity could be anticipated based on their physico-chemical parameters.

Abstract
Introduction: Water and nitrogen deficits are the most important limiting factors for plant growth and crop production in the world. Drought stress would be amplified by the global warming. Moreover, nitrogen scarcity is occurred in most arid and semi-arid areas. Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is an important plant due to export benefits and low water demand. This study was aimed to evaluate nitrogen fertilizer effect on yield and some physiological characteristics of cumin under different irrigation regimens. Methods: The experiment was performed based on a split plot as randomized complete block design. Experiment treatments were irrigation regimens (field capacity, irrigation by draining 40% of soil water as middle stress, and irrigation by draining 80% of soil water as severe stress) and nitrogen fertilizers (60 kg ha-1 urea, 30 kg ha-1 urea, Nitroxin, and Nitroxin + 30 kg ha-1 urea). Results: Drought stress reduced cumin dry weight, seed yield, and chlorophyll content. In contrary, proline content, malondialdehyde (MDA) rate, phenol content, anthocyanin amount, and activity of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POX) increased by water stress. Increment urea use resulted in amending cumin growth and seed yield in the field capacity. Also, nitrogen use and raising its rate under the middle water stress caused to improve cumin drought tolerance. However, under the severe water stress, nitrogen application had not a significant impress on drought acclimation and seed yield. Conclusion: Nitroxin inoculation with use of 30 kg ha-1 urea was the most effective treatment to ameliorate seed yield and drought tolerance.

Abstract
Due to the negative impact of reactive species (including free radicals) on humans and animals, the investigations to find effective substances (antioxidants), which protect living organisms against their damaging influence are carried out throughout the world. As most widespread synthetic antioxidants are suspected of having a noxious effect on the human body, more and more attention is paid to natural antioxidant compounds found in plants (especially phenolic compounds). The aim of this paper is to present the data about antioxidant activity of polyphenolic compounds with the emphasis on the main factors having influence on their antioxidant activity: chemical structure, ability to form hydrogen bonds, capability of metal ions chelation and reduction, adduct formation, kinetic solvents effect, mechanism of antioxidant reaction, capability of antioxidant enzyme activation and reduction potential.

Abstract
Density functional theory has been employed here to explore the ability of caffeic acid (CA) to trap Fe(II) to prevent the Fenton reaction thus limiting the hydroxyl radical formation. Electronic and structural features of complexes for metal-to-ligand different ratios were fully elucidated. Results confirm that the anionic forms of CA are able to form very stable complexes and show that all the possible coordination modes lead to formation of complexes that are thermochemically accessible. In addition, the change in free energies for the oxidation reaction, according to which hydrogen peroxide directly interacts with the metal center to produce the hydroxyl radical, confirms that Fe(II) complexed by CA is less active toward H2O2 than the purely solvated one. Even the energy required for the ligand exchange (H2O2 in place of water), supposed to be the first step involved in the Fenton reaction in a physiological environment, supports the propensity of CA to deactivate the hydroxyl radical formation by sequestering the ferrous ion. The rationalization of absorption spectra for various Fe(II)-CA complexes shows neutral and monoanionic species as conceivable ligands of the ferrous ion and the carboxylic group as the most probable site of coordination.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation on the reactions of 1, 3, 5-trihydroxybenzene (PG) and 2, 4, 6-trihydroxyacetophenone (ACPG) with •OOH has been performed with the aim of elucidating the peroxyl radical scavenging properties of PG and its acylated derivative. The study has considered the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), the single electron transfer-proton transfer and the sequential proton loss-electron transfer mechanisms and determined the geometric, energetic and electronic properties of the reaction species as well as the kinetic parameters for the HAT mechanism. DFT/M06-2X, DFT/MPW1K and DFT/BHHLYP calculation methods have been utilized in combination with the 6-311++G(3df, 2p) basis set. The DFT methods were benchmarked using the CBS-QB3 method. Thermodynamic parameters such as bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) and ionization energy suggest that the thermodynamically preferred mechanism is the HAT mechanism. The geometric, electronic and energetic parameters suggest that the preferred site for the abstraction of the free phenolic H atom in ACPG is the ortho position. Spin density and branching ratio values indicate that the most stable and preferable product formed is for the reaction of ACPG [Formula: see text] •OOH at the ortho position. The estimated rate constants obtained indicate that the reaction of ACPG [Formula: see text] •OOH is kinetically preferred to the reaction of PG [Formula: see text] •OOH, which is in agreement with experimental findings.

Abstract
Amlodipine besylate (AMB) is a synthetic dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker with antihypertensive and anti-anginal effects. Quantum computational investigations on AMB were done using DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G (d, p) level of theory, to study the molecular structural properties, nonlinear properties and antioxidant properties of AMB. The electrophilic and nucleophilic sites along with complete NBO analysis helps to locate the intermolecular electronic interactions and their stabilization energies. Complete NBO analysis was additionally done to locate the intermolecular electronic interactions and their stabilization energies. Charge distributions of Mulliken population, NBO and MEP are correlated. Also, the antioxidant properties of AMB were assessed to check whether these antioxidant effects contribute to the effects of antioxidant therapy. Further, the molecular docking studies of these compounds demonstrated a good selectivity profile with Monoamine oxidase B with better binding affinity and confirms AMB is a potent antioxidant.

Abstract
A considerable number of studies has shown that many constituents of foods derived from plants are effective and safe antioxidants. This explains the growing interest in natural antioxidants in food applications. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the Vam3, a resveratrol derivative, firstly isolated from ethanol extracts of Vitis amurensis Rupr as a secondary product, and to carry out a comparison with resveratrol and other phenolic compounds which are currently in the limelight all over the world due to their beneficial effects on the human body. The potential of Vam3 as an antioxidant was determined through the evaluation of some key thermodynamic parameters which are commonly used for this purpose and describe the antioxidant activity quite well. Various mechanisms through which antioxidants usually can carry out their action were also explored both in water and in apolar environment. The results indicated that Vam3 is an excellent candidate as a natural antioxidant.

Abstract
Bioactive ingredients from natural sources possess well-known positive effects in cosmetic applications. Among them, phenolic acids have emerged with very interesting potential. Caffeic acid (CAF) is one of the most promising active compounds because it possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral and anti-wrinkle effects. In order to increase its local bioavailability in topical applications, the vehiculation of caffeic acid can lead to a new raw material of cosmetic interest. For this purpose, clay minerals possess excellent properties, such as low or null toxicity and good biocompatibility. Clays are able to host a wide range of active ingredients in the interlayer region, using a green process known as intercalation reaction. The hosting of cosmetic actives into the layered structure of anionic clays allows the preparation of new materials with enhanced stability towards oxidation and photodegradation, better local bioavailability, and easier workability. In this paper, the successful vehiculation of caffeic acid into anionic clay is presented. The obtained hybrid is very promising for the cosmetic market because of its higher bioavailability and prolonged antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Arzanol (C22H26O7) is a naturally occurring acylphloroglucinol largely responsible for the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antibiotic and antiviral activities of Helichrysum italicum. Like all acylphloroglucinols, the molecule contains a carboxylic substituent (-COR group); for arzanol, this is a -COCH3 group. The molecule is further characterized by the presence of an α-pyrone ring bonded in meta to -COR through a methylene bridge, and of a prenyl chain bonded to the other meta position. The molecule can form up to three intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHB) simultaneously, and their presence and patterns are the major stabilizing factors. This work considers complexes of representative conformers of arzanol with a Cu2+ ion, taking into account the different possibilities for the binding of the Cu2+ ion to the electron-density rich sites of the molecule and including simultaneous coordination to two geometrically suitable sites. Calculations were performed at the DFT/B3LYP level, using the 6-31+G(d,p) basis set for the C, O and H atoms and the LANL2DZ pseudopotential for the Cu2+ ion. Interaction energies show preference for simultaneous binding of Cu2+ to two sites. Simultaneous binding to the O of a phenol OH neighboring the prenyl chain and to the π bond of the prenyl chain appears to be the most favorable option, followed by simultaneous binding to the sp2 O of the α-pyrone ring and the O of the phenol OH ortho to -COR on the side of the α-pyrone ring. The charge of the Cu2+ ion is reduced to +1 or slightly less in the complexes, which is consistent with the molecules' antioxidant (reducing) ability. Graphical abstract The copper ion prefers to attach to two sites of the arzanol molecule simultaneously. The arzanol molecule reduces the charge of the copper ion from +2 to +1 by transferring an electron to it; it becomes a radical molecular cation. The distribution of the unpaired electron in the molecule (as highlighted by the spin density maps) depends on the site/s to which the Cu2+ ion binds and on the molecule's conformer.
