Magneto-biomonitoring of intra-urban spatial variations of particulate matter using tree leaves

Preliminary mineral magnetic results from a pilot project investigating the suitability of roadside tree leaves as depositories of vehicular pollution are presented. Tree leaf surfaces (Lime: Tilia europaea; Sycamore: Acer pseudoplatanus) at four roadside and one woodland location in Wolverhampton, UK, have been monitored (July 2003 to November 2003). Mineral magnetic technologies have revealed spatial variations of particulate pollution concentration throughout the conurbation and data analysis indicates that magnetic concentration parameters are suitable proxies for fine particulate pollution, which are particularly hazardous to health. Site-specific traffic management and associated vehicle behaviour appear to be chiefly responsible for the magnetic concentration differences between sites. Magneto-biomonitoring in this way allows the high-resolution spatial mapping of particulate matter (PM) pollution, which may also benefit epidemiology in better assessing exposure to vehicular-derived particulates. Given the speed, measurement sensitivity and non-destructive nature of the technique, it is proposed that this low-cost approach offers some advantages over centralised monitoring stations to monitor urban roadside particulate pollution.

A novel method to detect unlabeled inorganic nanoparticles and submicron particles in tissue by sedimentation field-flow fractionation

A novel methodology to detect unlabeled inorganic nanoparticles was experimentally demonstrated using a mixture of nano-sized (70 nm) and submicron (250 nm) silicon dioxide particles added to mammalian tissue. The size and concentration of environmentally relevant inorganic particles in a tissue sample can be determined by a procedure consisting of matrix digestion, particle recovery by centrifugation, size separation by sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SdFFF), and detection by light scattering.

Combination of gravitational SPLITT fractionation and field-flow fractionation for size-sorting and characterization of sea sediment

A combination of gravitational split-flow thin (SPLITT) fractionation and sedimentation/steric field-flow fractionation (Sd/StFFF) has been used for continuous size-sorting of a sediment sample and for size analysis of the collected fractions. An IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) sediment material was separated into four size fractions (with theoretical size ranges <1.0, 1.0-3.0, 3.0-5.0, and >5.0 microm in diameter) by means of a three-step gravitational SPLITT fractionation (GSF) for which the same GSF channel was used throughout. The GSF fractions were collected and examined by optical microscopy (OM) and by Sd/St FFF. The mean diameters of the GSF fractions measured by OM were within the size interval predicted by GSF theory, despite the theory assuming that all particles are spherical, which is not true for the sediment particles. The Sd/St FFF results showed that retention shifted toward shorter elution time (or larger size) than expected, probably because of the shape effect. The results from GSF, OM, and Sd/StFFF are discussed in detail.

Size analysis of industrial carbon blacks by sedimentation and flow field-flow fractionation

Carbon black is one of the most useful particulate materials in the industrial field. Among the various physical properties of carbon black, size and size distribution are the most important properties to affect the quality of a final product. However, it is difficult to measure the exact particle size of carbon black since it suffers unavoidable interference from flocculation. In this study, the effects of various factors on the dispersion of industrial carbon blacks were investigated for the determination of size and size distribution of carbon black particles. Sedimentation and flow field-flow fractionations (FIFFF) were used to determine the size of carbon black, and their optimum analytical conditions were tested by changing surfactant, pH, ionic strength, and method of dispersion. The results showed that surfactant structure and its concentration played significant roles in dispersion stability. Carbon black was dispersed well with a nonionic surfactant with a pH of around 8 and an ionic strength of 0.003 M. The mean diameters measured from two types of FFF and photon correlation spectroscopy are in good agreement. This study demonstrates the potential of sedimentation and flow FFF for analyzing highly adsorptive industrial particles and guides for sample preparation.

Over the past 10 years there has been increasing evidence that particles generated by the combustion of fossil fuels adversely affect health. To what extent should paediatricians be concerned about particle pollution? This review assesses what we know, and what we still need to know about the health effects of fossil fuel particles.

Knudsen cell construction, validation and studies of the uptake of oxygenated fuel additives on soot

INTENTION, GOAL, SCOPE, BACKGROUND

The properties of atmospheric particles are important to public health, radiative forcing of the atmosphere and to elucidating the chemical reactivity of atmospheric particles. We have constructed a Knudsen cell to study the uptake of organic compounds on soot. This article describes the construction and validation of the instrument, and our results on commercial soot concerning the uptake coefficient of ethanol, acetone, 1-butanol and diethoxymethane.

OBJECTIVES

First, a technical description of the instrument is presented. Next, its performance is validated by measuring the uptake of NO2 on hexane soot. Finally, the uptake coefficients of four oxygenated hydrocarbons on commercial soot are presented. The objective is to contribute to the understanding of the formation of particles in motor vehicle exhaust.

METHODS

A Knudsen cell is used to measure the uptake of specific gas-surface systems. A quadrupole mass spectrometer is used to determine the decay rate of a pulse of reagent gas in the reaction chamber.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The BET surface area of the commercial soot was 12.6 m2/g. The uptake coefficient (gamma) has been determined for ethanol (gamma0,BET = 7.7 +/- 4.8 x 10(-8)), 1-butanol 1.4 +/- 0.54 x 10(-7)), acetone (gamma0BET = 1.5 +/- 0.15 x 10(-7)) and diethoxymethane (gamma0,BET = 2.6 +/- 0.61 x 10(-7). These results are characteristic of the specific soot sample used. The ordering of the uptake coefficients, ethanol < 1-butanol approximately acetone < diethoxymethane, can be ascribed to a combination of physical (size and mass) and chemical effects. In addition, the initial uptake coefficient for NO2 on fresh hexane soot was determined to be gamma0,BET = 1.7 +/- 1.1 x 10(-4).

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, we demonstrate that this instrument is able to measure uptake coefficients that are in agreement with accepted literature values. New data is presented concerning four light oxygenated hydrocarbons.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND OUTLOOK

A large amount of detailed information concerning individual heterogeneous reactions is necessary in order to model the composition of motor vehicle emissions. We look forward to increasing the size of this database. Results for a series of alcohols and alkanes will be presented in a forthcoming publication.
