Abstract
Polymorphism and co-crystallization have gradually gained attention as new tools in the development of modern crystalline functional materials. However, the study on the selective self-assembly of metal clusters into multicomponent crystals is still in its infancy. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new heteroleptic hydroxido-acetato and acetato Co(II) clusters [Co6(OH)2(OAc)4(pyret)6] (1) and [Co6(OAc)6(pyret)6] (2) incorporating auxiliary 2-pyrrolidinoethoxylate (pyret) ligands. On this occasion, we revealed that the commonly used thermal procedure for dehydration of cobalt(II) acetate leads to a reagent comprising substantial contamination by cobalt hydroxido moieties. Comprehensive structural analysis of new compounds demonstrated intriguing crystal structure diversity of hydroxido-acetato cluster 1, which represents a rare example of both conformational and packing polymorphism in one compound, originating from the flexibility of organic O,N-ligands in the secondary coordination sphere. Furthermore, both clusters exhibit an interesting propensity for the selective formation of co-crystals 1·2 driven mainly by van der Waals forces and specific shape complementarity between co-formers.

Abstract
A reaction between CoCl2 and L3-(CO2-)2 (2 : 1 stoichiometry) in CH3OH affords a discrete complex [CoII4-{L3-(CO2-)2}2(μ3-OCH3)2(CH3OH)2(H2O)2Cl2] (1) [L3-(CO2-)2 = 3-[N-{2-(pyridin-2-yl)methyl}amino]-bis(propionate)]. The structure of 1 reveals two terminal mononuclear CoII{L3-(CO2-)2}Cl units connected by a dimeric CoII2(μ3-OCH3)2(CH3OH)2(H2O) unit present in the centre through two methoxo (μ3-OCH3)- and two carboxylate (μ-1,1-OCO-) bridges affording a tetranuclear coordination cluster of Co(II) with a defective dicubane topology. In 1, Co1 (terminal) has distorted octahedral CoIIN2O3Cl and the central Co2 has CoIIO6 coordination. Such coordination arrangements afford the observed topology. Variable-temperature magnetic studies reveal anti-ferromagnetic coupling in 1. Three magnetic exchange interactions (one anti-ferromagnetic and two ferromagnetic: J1 = +3.3 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.176 Å; μ-1,1-OCO- and μ3-OCH3 bridges), J2 = -2.5 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.228 Å; μ-1-OCO- and μ3-OCH3 bridges) and J3 = +10.6 cm-1 (Co⋯Co 3.084 Å; two μ3-OCH3 bridges)) have been identified, with the inclusion of the orbital reduction parameter (α = Aκ = 1.38), spin-orbit coupling (λ = -158 cm-1) and axial distortion (energy gap Δ = -975 cm-1 between singlet and doublet levels), rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
A new metal–organic framework {[Mn4(Cx)3(etdipy)5]·2ClO4}n (1) was prepared via the complexation of manganese ion from a Mn(ClO4)2 source with 1,3-bis(carboxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (Cx) and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (etdipy) in the presence of 2,4-lutidine as a deprotonating agent. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a dense 3D framework structure. The presence in the structure of flexible tetramethyldisiloxane moieties, which tend to orient themselves at the interface with the air, gives the compound a highly hydrophobic character, as indicated by the result of the water vapor sorption analysis in the dynamic regime, as well as the shape and stability of the water droplet on the crystalline mass of the compound. The compound is an electrical insulator, and due to its hydrophobicity, this characteristic is unaffected by environmental dampness. The thermal analysis indicated thermal stability up to about 300 °C and an unusual thermal transition for an MOF structure, more precisely a glass transition at 24 °C, the latter also being attributed to the flexible segments in the structure. The magnetic studies showed dominant antiferromagnetic interactions along the metal ion chain in compound 1.

Abstract
The crystal structure of Mn(ii) carboxylate with 3-methylbenzoate as a bridging ligand [Mn(3-MeC6H4COO)2(H2O)2]n shows a rhomboidal layer, where each pair of neighbor Mn(ii) ions are bridged through only one carboxylate group with a syn-anti conformation. The magnetic exchange between neighbor ions is weakly antiferromagnetic (J = -0.52 cm-1, g = 2.04), and at low temperature the system shows spin canting with TB = 3.8 K. Computational studies, based on periodic calculations of the energies of the significant spin states on the magnetic cell and some higher supercells, corroborate the weak AF interaction between the adjacent Mn(ii) ions and preclude the negligible effect of frustration caused by very weak interactions between the non-adjacent ions in the magnetic response of the system. The results provide compelling evidence that the observed spin canting is due to the local coordination geometry of the manganese ions leading to two antiferromagnetically coupled subnets with different axial vectors.

Abstract
A family of new MnII compounds, consisting of seven dinuclear, three mononuclear, and four trinuclear ones, were synthesised using benzoic acid derivatives n-RC6H4COOH, where n-R = 2-MeO, 3-MeO, 4-MeO, or 4-tBu, and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenantroline (phen) as blocking ligands. The crystal structures of nine of these compounds and the magnetic studies of all of them are reported here. Each type of compound was formed depending on the presence or absence of ClO4- ions, the solvent used, and/or the presence of a small amount of water in the reaction medium. The use of the tert-buthylbenzoate ligand gave unexpected results, very likely due to the steric hindrance caused by the voluminous tBu groups. The EPR spectra of each type of compound give some peculiar features that allow its identification. Attempts to fit these spectra have been made in order to determine the ZFS parameters, D and E, of the MnII ion (for mononuclear and dinuclear systems) or of the ground state (for trinuclear systems). For trinuclear systems, the single-ion ZFS parameters estimated from those of the ground state provided a good simulation of the EPR spectra of these compounds. The EPR signals observed in each case have been rationalised according to the energy level distribution and the plausible population in the excited states. In some particular situations, the sign of DMn could be determined from the fit of the EPR spectra of the antiferromagnetic dinuclear compounds, the source of the difference between the spectra lying in the second excited state.

Abstract
With the aim of tuning the structures by using oxime ligands with different non-coordinating groups, three aromatic oxime ligands were designed by fusing oxime groups ([double bond, length as m-dash]N-OH) onto different non-coordinating groups. Their reactions with the corresponding Mn(ii) salts gave five manganese clusters [Mn(μ3-O)(L1)3(DMF)(H2O)3Cl]·2DMF·CH3OH (1), [Mn(μ3-O)(L2)3(OAc)(CH3OH)2] (2), [Mn(μ3-O)2(L2)6(H2O)(py)7](ClO4)2·py·0.5CH3OH·2H2O (3), [MnO4(L2)8(DMF)4]·DMF·6CH3CN (4), and [MnMnO4(L3)12]·3DMF·6H2O (5), in which H2L1, H2L2 and HL3 represent indane-1,2,3-trione-1,2-dioxime, acenaphthenequinone dioxime, and 9,10-phenanthrenedione-9-oxime, respectively. Their structures were determined and studied in detail. 1 and 2 show planar triangular trinuclear Mn structures. 3 has a hexanuclear Mn skeleton formed from two Mn triangular units through inter-trinuclear mutual coordination. 4 and 5 present octanuclear skeletons constructed from planar triangular Mn3O and tetrahedral Mn4O secondary building units, respectively, with different symmetries and different oxidation states of the manganese ions. Their structural studies reveal a significant contribution of the parent rings for fusing oxime groups, different non-coordinating groups and anions to the formation of different cluster skeletons. Their magnetic properties were investigated and simulated, which revealed the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions in these compounds.

Abstract
A brackebuschite-type compound Pb2Mn(VO4)2(OH) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Pb2Mn(VO4)2(OH) crystallizes in the space group P21/m, with the structure built of single [010] chains of edge-shared MnO6 octahedra bridged by VO4-PbO6 groups along a and c axes, as a result forming a very large inter-chain distance of about 7.67 Å. The magnetic and optical measurements indicate that Pb2Mn(VO4)2(OH) is an S = 2 quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor, with a very small specific value of intra- and inter-chain exchange coupling Jintra/Jinter = 10(-3), and a band gap of 1.72 eV. The electronic structure calculations indicate that a 90° Mn-O-Mn dpσ-dpσ correlation superexchange dominates the intra-chain ferromagnetic coupling in Pb2Mn(VO4)2(OH).

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers consisting of Mn(III) Schiff-base complexes and dicarboxylic acids, [{Mn(salen)}4(L1)](PF6)2·(CH3OH)2 (C4; H2L1 = adipid acid) and [{Mn(salen)}4(L2)](PF6)2·(CH3OH)4 (C4'; H2L2 = E,E-1,3-butadiene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid) (salen(2-) = N,N'-(ethylene)bis(salicylideneiminato), were synthesized by using a one-pot reaction and characterized by using single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. One-dimensional (1D) chains composed of Mn(salen) dimers, [Mn2], bridged by carboxylato ligands (-[Mn2]-OCO--[Mn2]-), were linked by dicarboxylato ligands with n-butyl (-C4H8-) (C4) and butadienyl aliphatic groups (-C4H4-) (C4'). From static magnetic measurements on both C4 and C4', there were ferromagnetic interactions between the Mn(III) ions through the phenoxo oxygen atoms of the salen(2-), and antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn(III) ions through carboxylato ligands (-OCO-). As a result, weak ferromagnetism occurred because of the zigzag-shaped chain structure of C4 and C4', and magnetic anisotropy for Mn(salen). In the magnetization curves for C4', weak interchain interactions (Jlinker) occurred through the π-conjugated butadienyl linkers in C4', which C4 did not have. In other words, changing from saturated to unsaturated aliphatic groups in the dicarboxylic acid linkers resulted in weak interactions between 1D-magnetic chain moieties. Therefore, in the case of only C4', antiferromagnetic phase transition appeared at 2.3 K. Both coordination polymers exhibited slow relaxation of the magnetizations, which originated from SCM moieties, because C4 and C4' showed magnetic correlations. It is noteworthy that alternating current (ac) susceptibilities for C4' are frequency-dependent around the Néel temperature. From analysis of the ac susceptibilities for C4, α (dispersion coefficient of the relaxation of magnetization) varied linearly with 1/T. This signifies that C4 behaved as an SCM with a single relaxation process. On the other hand, in α versus 1/T plots for C4', an inflection point was observed at the Néel temperature, indicating that Jlinkers had an effect on the distribution of the relaxation times. Moreover, the inflection point for C4' disappeared when a dc magnetic field was applied. This is the first report showing a direct correlation between an antiferromagnetic phase transition and slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract
The Schiff base, 2-[(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-4-ylimino)methyl]-5-nitrophenol coordinates to Mn(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pd(II) ions through the phenolic O and imine N atoms. The complexes are characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The metal complexes formed as [ML2]xH2O with exception of the Cu(II) complex which is anhydrous. Spectroscopic data corroborate the adoption of a four-coordinate, tetrahedral geometry for the Mn(II), and Zn(II) complexes, and a four-coordinate, square planar geometry for the Cu(II) and Pd(II) complexes. None is an electrolyte in DMSO. The in vitro anticancer activities of the metal free ligand, Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pd(II) complexes against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) and HT-29 (colon carcinoma) cells reveal that the Pd(II) complex has the best cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cells with an IC50 of 5.94 μM, which is within the same order of activity as cisplatin. Furthermore, the ligand and the Zn(II) complex exhibit broad-spectrum activity against two gram-positive bacteria, three gram-negative bacteria, and a fungus with inhibitory zones range of 10.0–20.0 and 10.0–17.0 mm, respectively.

Abstract
The dinuclear Mn(II) complex [Mn2(L)2(bipy)4]·(ClO4)2·3H2O (HL = 2-benzothiazolylthioacetic acid; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) has been synthesised and characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and elemental analysis. In the dimeric, cationic complex with a crystallographic centre of symmetry, two bipy molecules chelate each Mn atom. These two metal fragments are then bridged by two L groups in a syn–anti conformation with a Mn···Mn distance of 4.767 Å. The arrangement of these dimers allows the formation of tunnels that host the ClO4- anions and lattice water molecules through hydrogen bonds. Magnetic susceptibility measurement revealed antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal centres.
