Abstract
An azide and transition metal-free method for the synthesis of elusive phosphonic, phosphinic, and phosphoric monoacids has been developed. Inert pentavalent P(v)-compounds (phosphonate, phosphinate, and phosphate) are activated by triflate anhydride (Tf2O)/pyridine system to form a highly reactive phosphoryl pyridinium intermediate that undergoes nucleophilic substitution with H2O to selectively deprotect one alkoxy group and form organophosphorus monoacids.

Abstract
The trifunctional P/B/B frustrated Lewis pairs 11a-c featuring bulky aryl groups at phosphorus [Dmesp (a), Tipp (b), Mes* (c)] react with H2 by heterolytic hydrogen splitting followed by cleavage of HB(C6F5)2 to give the zwitterionic six-membered heterocyclic PH phosphonium/borate products 14a-c. Compounds 11a,b react with carbon monoxide by means of a Lewis acid induced CO insertion/rearrangement sequence that eventually results in the formation of the macrocyclic dimers 17a,b. The respective carbonylation reaction of the Mes*P/B/B FLP gives the macrocyclic trimer 18c. The new products were characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray diffraction and the reaction mechanism was analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The phosphonic acid functional group, which is characterized by a phosphorus atom bonded to three oxygen atoms (two hydroxy groups and one P=O double bond) and one carbon atom, is employed for many applications due to its structural analogy with the phosphate moiety or to its coordination or supramolecular properties. Phosphonic acids were used for their bioactive properties (drug, pro-drug), for bone targeting, for the design of supramolecular or hybrid materials, for the functionalization of surfaces, for analytical purposes, for medical imaging or as phosphoantigen. These applications are covering a large panel of research fields including chemistry, biology and physics thus making the synthesis of phosphonic acids a determinant question for numerous research projects. This review gives, first, an overview of the different fields of application of phosphonic acids that are illustrated with studies mainly selected over the last 20 years. Further, this review reports the different methods that can be used for the synthesis of phosphonic acids from dialkyl or diaryl phosphonate, from dichlorophosphine or dichlorophosphine oxide, from phosphonodiamide, or by oxidation of phosphinic acid. Direct methods that make use of phosphorous acid (H3PO3) and that produce a phosphonic acid functional group simultaneously to the formation of the P-C bond, are also surveyed. Among all these methods, the dealkylation of dialkyl phosphonates under either acidic conditions (HCl) or using the McKenna procedure (a two-step reaction that makes use of bromotrimethylsilane followed by methanolysis) constitute the best methods to prepare phosphonic acids.

Abstract
Three, PO4 3-/HPO4 2- and AsO4 3--incorporated, new tetranuclear complexes of copper(II) and zinc(II) ions have been synthesized and fully characterized. In methanol-water, reactions of H3cpdp (H3cpdp = N,N'-Bis[2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N,N'-Bis[2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol) with copper(II) chloride in the presence of either NaOH/Na2HPO4·2H2O or KOH/Na2HAsO4·7H2O lead to the isolation of the tetranuclear complexes Na3[Cu4(cpdp)2(μ4-PO4)](OH)2·14H2O (1) and K2[Cu4(cpdp)2(μ4-AsO4)](OH)·162/3H2O (2), respectively. Similarly, the reaction of H3cpdp with zinc(II) chloride in the presence of NaOH/Na2HPO4·2H2O yields a tetranuclear complex, Na(H3O)2[Zn4(cpdp)2(μ4-HPO4)]Cl3·121/2H2O (3). All complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other analytical techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and electrochemical studies. The solid-state molecular framework of each complex contains two monocationic [M2(cpdp)]+ (M = Cu, Zn) units, which are exclusively coordinated to either phosphate/hydrogen phosphate or arsenate groups in a unique mode. All three complexes exhibit a μ4:η1:η1:η1:η1 bridging mode of the PO4 3-/HPO4 2-/AsO4 3- groups, with each bridging among four metal ions. The thermal properties of all three complexes have been investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Low-temperature magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 2 disclose moderate antiferromagnetic interactions mediated among the copper centers through alkoxide and phosphate/arsenate bridges. Electrochemical studies of complexes 1 and 2 in dimethylformamide using cyclic voltammetry reveal the presence of a fairly assessable one-electron metal-based irreversible reduction and one quasireversible oxidation couple.

Abstract
AbstractDivalent metal phosphonates are promising hybrid materials with a broad field of application. The rich coordination chemistry of the phosphonate linkers enables the formation of structures with different dimensionalities ranging from isolated complexes and layered structures to porous frameworks incorporating various functionalities through the choice of the building blocks. In brief, metal phosphonates offer an interesting opportunity for the design of multifunctional materials. Here, we provide a short review on the class of divalent metal phosphonates discussing their syntheses, structures, and applications. We present the advantages of the recently introduced mechanochemical pathway for the synthesis of divalent phosphonates as a possibility to generate new, in certain cases metastable compounds. The reaction of zinc(II) perchlorate with trichloromethyl phosphonic acid at room temperature afforded, upon crystallization, a two-dimensional layered coordination polymer possessing a dinuclear repeat unit, [{Zn2(Cl3CPO3)2(H2O)3}·1.5H2O]n (1). Modification of the above reaction by involving a co-ligand afforded the tetranuclear complex, [{Zn4(η(1)-DMPzH)6(Cl3C-PO3)2}(μ-OH)2(ClO4)2] (2). The molecular structure of 2 reveals that the tetranuclear core is non-planar and consists of three contiguous inorganic rings which include one 8-membered Zn2P2O4 ring and two six-membered Zn2PO3 rings. Replacement of Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O with ZnCl2 under the same reaction conditions that afforded 2 allowed the formation of the dinuclear complex [{(ZnCl)2(η(2)-Pz)2(Cl3CPO3)}(Et3NH)2] (3). 3 possesses a bicyclic core containing a seven-membered Zn2N2O2P ring. In 3, the phosphoryl oxygen atom (P=O) is involved in a bifurcated hydrogen bonding interaction with the triethylammonium cation. The reaction of ZnCl2 and 2,3,5,6-(Me)4C6HCH2PO3H2 afforded the octanuclear complex [Zn8(Cl)6{2,3,5,6-(Me)4C6HCH2PO3}6(Et3N)2](Et3NH)2]·2n-hexane·3H2O (4). The core of 4 is ellipsoid-shaped with the end-end polar distance (C-C) being ~20 Å.

Abstract
Hydrothermal reactions of aluminum(III) nitrate or iron(III) nitrate with N,N-dimethylaminomethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (H(4)L) and sodium hydroxide lead to two novel isostructural octanuclear metal phosphonate cages encapsulating two Na(I) ions, namely, [Al(8)Na(2)(HL)(2)(H(2)L)(10)(H(2)O)(6)] x 20 H(2)O (1) and [Fe(8)Na(2)(HL)(2)(H(2)L)(10)(H(2)O)(6)] x 22 H(2)O (2). The molecular structure of 1 can be viewed as a three-in-one cluster, in which a central zeolite D6R SBU lookalike aluminophosphonate cage is capped by two symmetry-related aluminophosphonate tetrahedral cages above and below and such a tetrahedral cage, being composed of four zeolite S6R SBU lookalike aluminophosphonate rings, further hexadentately traps one Na(+) ion in its cavity.
