Abstract
![]()
Structural, magnetic,
and spectroscopic data on a Mn3+ spin-crossover complex
with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal2323, isolated in crystal
lattices with five different counteranions,
are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]X where X
= ClO4– (1), BF4– (2), NO3– (3), Br– (4), and I– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral
orthorhombic space group P21212 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ complex cation over the temperature range
5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin,
complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin
crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show
stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet
forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic
resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters
associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures
below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective
values: DS=1 = +23.38(1) cm–1, ES=1 = +2.79(1) cm–1,
and DS=2 =
+6.9(3) cm–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular
dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room
temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate,
and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that
it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption
spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different
intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic
composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization
of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal2323)]+ in five lattices with
different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed
by the 4-OMe-Sal2323 ligand. Zero-field
splitting parameters of the spin triplet and
quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn3+ complex stabilized
in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field
electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral
crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the
chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed
to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

Abstract
The spin crossover salt [Fe(bpp)2 ](isonicNO)2 ⋅ 2.4 H2 O (1⋅2.4 H2 O) (bpp=2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; isonicNO=isonicotinate N-oxide anion) exhibits a very abrupt spin crossover at T1/2 =274.4 K. This triggers a supramolecular linkage (H-bond) isomerization that responds reversibly towards light irradiation or temperature change. Isotopic effects in the thermomagnetic behavior reveal the importance of hydrogen bonds in defining the magnetic state. Further, the title compound can be reversibly dehydrated to afford 1, a material that also exhibits spin crossover coupled to H-bond isomerization, leading to strong kinetic effects in the thermomagnetic properties.

Abstract
The title compound (Me4N)[Fe{(2-py)3C- n-C18H37}(NCS)3] having a C18 chain underwent spin-crossover (SCO). There are two crystallographically independent molecules in a triclinic cell at 100 K but only one in a monoclinic cell at 300 K. The complex showed a gradual one-step SCO in the same temperature region as that of the structural transition. The SCO is supported with the 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The molecules are differentiated on cooling, but the SCO was synchronized.

Abstract
A novel mononuclear iron(II) complex with a linear hexadentate N6 ligand, containing two 1,2,3-triazole moieties, [Fe(L2-3-2Ph)](AsF6)2 (1), was synthesized (L2-3-2Ph = bis[N-(1-Phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methylidene-2-aminoethyl]-1,3-propanediamine). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed a gradual one-step spin crossover (SCO) between the high-spin (HS, S = 2) and low-spin (LS, S = 0) states above room temperature (T1/2 = 468 K). The spin transition was further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study showed that the complex was in the LS state (S = 0) at room temperature (296 K). In the crystal lattice, a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network was formed by intermolecular CH⋯ and – interactions of neighboring complex cations [Fe(L2-3-2Ph)]2+. AsF6− ions were located interstitially in the 3D network of complex cations, with no solvent-accessible voids. The crystal structure at 448 K (mixture of HS and LS species) was also successfully determined thanks to the thermal stability of the solvent-free crystal.

Abstract
Two Fe(II) complexes fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)]Cl·Y (Y = AsF(6) (1) and BF(4) (2)) were synthesized, where HL(n-Pr) is 2-methylimidazole-4-yl-methylideneamino-n-propyl. Each complex-cation has the same octahedral N(6) geometry coordinated by three bidentate ligands and assumes facial-isomerism, fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) with Δ- and Λ-enantiomorphs. Three imidazole groups per Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) are hydrogen-bonded to three Cl(-) ions or, from the viewpoint of the Cl(-) ion, one Cl(-) ion is hydrogen-bonded to three neighbouring fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) cations. The 3 : 3 NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds between Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) and Cl(-) generate two kinds of assembly structures. The directions of the 3 : 3 NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds and hence the resulting assembly structures are determined by the size of the anion Y, though Y is not involved into the network structure and just accommodated in the cavity. Compound 1 has a 1D ladder structure giving a larger cavity, in which the Δ- and Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) enantiomorphs are bridged by two NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds. Compound 2 has a 2D network structure with a net unit of a cyclic trimer of {fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+)···Cl(-)}(3) giving a smaller cavity, in which Δ- or Λ-fac-[Fe(II)(HL(n-Pr))(3)](2+) species with the same chirality are linked by NH···Cl(-) hydrogen bonds to give a homochiral 2D network structure. Magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer spectral measurements demonstrated that compound 1 showed an abrupt one-step spin crossover with 4.0 K thermal hysteresis of T(c↓) = 125.5 K and T(c↑) = 129.5 K and compound 2 showed no spin transition and stayed in the high-spin state over the 5-300 K temperature range.

Abstract
Spin-crossover compounds are becoming increasingly popular for device and sensor applications, and in soft materials, that make use of their switchable colour, paramagnetism and conductivity. The de novo design of new solid spin-crossover compounds with pre-defined switching properties is desirable for application purposes. This challenging problem of crystal engineering requires an understanding of how the temperature and cooperativity of a spin-transition are influenced by the structure of the bulk material. Towards that end, this critical review presents a survey of molecular spin-crossover compounds with good availability of crystallographic data. A picture is emerging that changes in molecular shape between the high- and low-spin states, and the ability of a lattice to accommodate such changes, can play an important role in determining the existence and the cooperativity of a thermal spin-transition in the solid state (198 references).

Abstract
The metal complexes, [M(Hdammthiol)(2)]Cl·3H(2)O [M = Cr(III) (1), Fe(III) (2)] [where H(2)dammthiol is the thiol form of the ligand, diacetylmonoxime morpholine N-thiohydrazone] were synthesized by metal template reactions of diacetylemonoxime with morpholine N-thiohydrazide in the presence of CrCl(3)·6H(2)O and FeCl(3)·6H(2)O. Both the complexes (1 and 2) were characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (IR and UV-vis), Mössbauer and TGA analyses. The single crystal X-ray studies of both complexes show that the supramolecular hosts, constructed by the discrete mononuclear complexes, form supramolecular channels along the c-axis which are filled up by water-chloride clusters. In both complexes, the 1D water-chloride chain with chair-like architecture within the supramolecular hosts presents novelty. The magnetic measurement study of Fe(III) complex shows a spin crossover from S = 1/2 at 2.5 K to S = 5/2 at 300 K. At very low temperature, the presence of strong cooperative hydrogen bonding interactions stabilizes the S = 1/2 state.

Abstract
A 2D iron(II) spin crossover complex, [FeII(HLH,Me)2](ClO4)2.1.5MeCN (1), was synthesized, where HLH,Me = imidazol-4-yl-methylidene-8-amino-2-methylquinoline. 1 showed a gradual spin transition between the HS (S = 2) and LS (S = 0) states from 180 to 325 K within the first warming run from 5 to 350 K, in which 1.5MeCN is removed, and there was an abrupt spin transition at T1/2 downward arrow = 174 K in the first cooling run from 350 to 5 K. Following the first cycle, the compound showed an abrupt spin transition at T1/2 upward arrow = 185 K and T1/2 downward arrow = 174 K with 11 K wide hysteresis in the second cycle. The crystal structures of 1 were determined at 296 (an intermediate between the HS and LS states) and 150 K (LS state). The structure consists of a 2D extended structure constructed of both the bifurcated NH...O- hydrogen bonds between two ClO4- ions and two neighboring imidazole NH groups of the [FeII(HLH,Me)2]2+ cations and the pi-pi interactions between the two quinolyl rings of the two adjacent cations. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that solvent molecules are gradually eliminated even at room temperature and completely removed at 369 K. Desolvated complex 1' showed an abrupt spin transition at T1/2 upward arrow = 180 K and T1/2 downward arrow = 174 K with 6 K wide hysteresis.

Abstract
Dinuclear [(TPyA)FeII(DBQ2-)FeII(TPyA)](BF4)2 possesses extensive pi-pi interactions between the FeII dimers that give rise to a two-dimensional supramolecular sheet structure. The magnetic susceptibility shows a room-temperature spin-crossover behavior; however, thermal hysteresis is not observed.
