Tuning the Structural and Photophysical Properties of Cationic Pt(II) Complexes Bearing Neutral Bis(triazolyl)pyridine Ligands

Isostructural Series of Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Au(III) Azido Complexes with a N^C^N Pincer Ligand to Elucidate Trends in the iClick Reaction Kinetics and Structural Parameters of the Triazolato Products

An isoelectronic and isostructural series of cyclometalated azido complexes [M(N3)(dpb)] with M = Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Au(III) based on the N^C^N pincer ligand 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)phenide (dpb) was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and investigated for reactivity in the iClick reaction with a wide range of internal and terminal alkynes by using 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. Reaction rate constants were found to increase with greater charge density in the order Ni(II) > Pd(II) > Pt(II) > Au(III). Terminal alkynes R-C≡C-R' with strongly electron-withdrawing groups R and R' exhibited faster kinetics than those with electron-donating substituents in the order CF3 > ketone > ester > H > phenyl ≫ amide, while R = CH3 resulted in complete loss of reactivity. Four symmetrical triazolato complexes [M(triazolatoCOOCH3,COOCH3)(dpb)] with M = Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Au(III) as well as four nonsymmetrically substituted triazolato complexes [Pt(triazolatoR,R')(dpb)] originating from terminal and internal alkynes were shown by X-ray crystal structure analysis to exclusively feature N2-coordination of the five-membered ring ligand. However, the Pt(II) triazolato complexes exist as a mixture of N1- and N2-coordinated species in solution. Torsion angles between the mean planes of the N^C^N pincer and the triazolato ligand increase from a nearly coplanar to a perpendicular arrangement when going from Au(III)/Pt(II)/Pd(II) to Ni(II), while different substituents R and R' on the alkyne have no influence on the torsion angle and were rationalized by DFT calculations. Finally, a carbohydrate derivative obtained by glucuronic acid conjugation to methyl propiolate demonstrates the facile biofunctionalization of metal complexes via the iClick reaction.

Synthesis and Magnetic Studies of Two Neutral, Bis-Ligand Fe(II) Complexes Containing Carbazole-Bis(tetrazole) Ligands

Previously reported carbazole-bis(tetrazole) (CzT^R) ligands (where R = iPr and CH₂-2,4,6-C₆H₂Me₃) were used to synthesize air-stable, six-coordinate, octahedral bis-ligand Fe(II) complexes (CzT^R)₂Fe. The synthesis and characterization of these complexes using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are reported. Analysis of the magnetic properties revealed that the isopropyl derivative displays thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) over a temperature range of 150-350 K. This transition appears as an abrupt two-step transition in the solid state but simplifies to a smooth one-step transition in solution. The two-step transition in the solid state has been postulated to be due to lattice and solvation effects. In contrast, the slightly bulkier substituted CH₂-2,4,6-C₆H₂Me₃ (CH₂Mes) Fe complex displays dramatically different magnetic behavior with no SCO and magnetic data suggesting low-spin Fe(II) with a possible TIP contribution. DFT calculations support the postulate that the change in magnetic behavior is primarily due to the nature of the ligand substituents.

Organoplatinum(II) Cruciform: A Versatile Building Block to Fabricate 2D Microcrystals with Full-Color and White Phosphorescence and Anisotropic Photon Transport

Conventional square-planar platinum complexes typically form one-dimensional assemblies as a result of unidirectional metallophilic and/or π⋅⋅⋅π intermolecular interactions. Organoplatinum(II) complexes with a cruciform shape are presented herein to construct two-dimensional (2D) microcrystals with full-color and white phosphorescence. These 2D crystals show unique monocomponent π⋅⋅⋅π stacking, from either the cyclometalating or noncyclometalating ligand, and the bicomponent alternate π⋅⋅⋅π stacking from both ligands along different facet directions. Anisotropic tri-directional waveguiding is further implemented on a single hexagonal microcrystal. These results demonstrate the great capability of the organoplatinum(II) cruciform as a general platform to fabricate 2D phosphorescent micro-/nanocrystals for advanced photonic applications.

Enhanced phosphorescence of Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes adsorbed onto Laponite for optical sensing of triplet molecular dioxygen in water

Two isoleptic complexes involving Pd(II) and Pt(II) centres with a tetradentate luminophoric ligand were adsorbed onto Laponite (LAP), yielding H2O-dispersible nanohybrids with remarkable photoexcited state properties. The adsorption promoted rigidification of the coordination compounds and suppression of roto-vibrational deactivation pathways, thus enhancing the performance of the molecular species. Interestingly, room temperature phosphorescence was achieved in the case of the Pd(II)-containing nanohybrid along with a marked 3O2 sensitivity, whereas the photoluminescence of the Pt(II)-based material showed only a mild dependence on the presence of 3O2 while reaching up to 37% quantum yield.

Tuning energy landscapes and metal-metal interactions in supramolecular polymers regulated by coordination geometry

Herein, we exploit coordination geometry as a new tool to regulate the non-covalent interactions, photophysical properties and energy landscape of supramolecular polymers. To this end, we have designed two self-assembled Pt(ii) complexes 1 and 2 that feature an identical aromatic surface, but differ in the coordination and molecular geometry (linear vs. V-shaped) as a result of judicious ligand choice (monodentate pyridine vs. bidentate bipyridine). Even though both complexes form cooperative supramolecular polymers in methylcyclohexane, their supramolecular and photophysical behaviour differ significantly: while the high preorganization of the bipyridine-based complex 1 enables an H-type 1D stacking with short Pt⋯Pt contacts via a two-step consecutive process, the existence of increased steric effects for the pyridyl-based derivative 2 hinders the formation of metal–metal contacts and induces a single aggregation process into large bundles of fibers. Ultimately, this fine control of Pt⋯Pt distances leads to tuneable luminescence—red for 1vs. blue for 2, which highlights the relevance of coordination geometry for the development of functional supramolecular materials.

In this article, we exploit coordination geometry as a new tool to control the energy landscape and photophysical properties (red vs. blue luminescence) of supramolecular polymers.

Effect of the Fluoro-Substituent Position on the Crystal Structure and Photoluminescence of Microcrystals of Platinum β-Diketonate Complexes

Molecular packing has an important effect on the photophysical properties of crystalline materials. We demonstrate in this work the modulation of molecular packing and emission properties of microcrystals by minor molecular structural variations. Four platinum β-diketonate complexes, with two fluoro substituents (1) or one fluoro atom substituted on different positions of the auxiliary phenylpyridine ligand (2-4) have been synthesized. These complexes were used to prepare one-dimensional microcrystals with well-defined shapes and uniform sizes. Although 1-4 display similar emission spectra in the solution state, the corresponding microcrystals display different emission colors from green to yellow and orange. In addition, different temperature-responsive (80-298 K) emission spectral changes have been observed from these microcrystals, including the intensity variation of the locally excited (LE) emission without obvious wavelength shifts, competition between the LE and metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer emissions, and the sole wavelength shift of the π-π excimer emissions. These differences in emission properties are rationalized by different molecular packings of these materials, as revealed by single-crystal X-ray analyses.

Observation of an Inversion in Photophysical Tuning in a Systematic Study of Luminescent Triazole-Based Osmium(II) Complexes

In a systematic survey of luminescent bis(terdentate) osmium(II) complexes, a tipping point involving a reversal in photophysical tuning is observed whereby increasing stabilization of the ligand-based lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) results in a blue shift in the optical absorption and emission bands. The complexes [Os(N^N'^N″)₂]²⁺ [N^N'^N″ = 2,6-bis(1-phenyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (Os1), 2,6-bis(1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyrazine (Os2), 6-(1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyridyl (Os3), 2-(pyrid-2-yl)-6-(1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyrazine (Os4), 2-(pyrazin-2-yl)-6-(1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (Os5), and 6-(1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyrazinyl (Os6)] have been prepared and characterized, and all complexes display phosphorescence ranging from the orange to near-IR regions of the spectrum. Replacement of the central pyridine in the ligands of Os1 by the more π-accepting pyrazine in Os2 results in a 55 nm red shift in the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer-based emission band, while a larger red shift of 107 nm is observed for the replacement of one of the triazole donors in the ligands of Os1 by a second pyridine ring in Os3 (λ^em_max = 702 nm). Interestingly, replacement of the central pyridine ring in the ligands of Os3 by pyrazine (Os4, λ^em_max = 702 nm) fails to result in a further red shift in the emission band. Reversal of the relative positions of the pyridine and pyrazine donors in Os5 (λ^em_max = 733 nm) compared to Os4 does indeed result in the expected red shift in the emission with respect to that for Os3 based on the increased π-acceptor character of the ligands present. However, an inversion in emission tuning is observed for Os6, in which the incorporation of a second pyrazine donor in the ligand architecture results in a blue shift in the optical absorption and emission maxima (λ^em_max = 710 nm). Electrochemical studies reveal that while incorporating pyrazine in the ligands indeed results in an expected anodic shift in the first reduction potential through stabilization of the ligand-based LUMO, there is also a concomitant anodic shift in the Os^II/Os^III-based oxidation potential. This stabilization of the metal-based highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) thus nullifies the effect of stabilization of the LUMO in Os4 compared to Os3, resulting in these complexes having coincident emission maxima. For Os6, stabilization of the HOMO through the incorporation of two pyrazine donors in the ligand structure now exceeds stabilization of the LUMO, resulting in a larger HOMO-LUMO gap and a counterintuitive blue shift in the optical properties in comparison with those of Os5. While it is known that the replacement of ligands (e.g., replacing bipyridyl with bipyrazinyl) can result in a larger HOMO-LUMO energy gap through greater stabilization of the HOMO, these results importantly allow us to capture the tipping point at which this inversion in photophysical tuning occurs. This therefore enables us to explore the limits available in emission tuning with a relatively simple and minimalist ligand structure.

Oxygen-Insensitive Aggregates of Pt(II) Complexes as Phosphorescent Labels of Proteins with Luminescence Lifetime-Based Readouts

The synthesis and photophysical properties of a tailored Pt(II) complex are presented. The phosphorescence of its monomeric species in homogeneous solutions is quenched by interaction with the solvent and therefore absent even upon deoxygenation. However, aggregation-induced shielding from the environment and suppression of rotovibrational degrees of freedom trigger a phosphorescence turn-on that is not suppressed by molecular oxygen, despite possessing an excited-state lifetime ranging in the microsecond scale. Thus, the photoinduced production of reactive oxygen species is avoided by the suppression of diffusion-controlled Dexter-type energy transfer to triplet molecular oxygen. These aggregates emit with the characteristic green luminescence profile of monomeric complexes, indicating that Pt-Pt or excimeric interactions are negligible. Herein, we show that these aggregates can be used to label a model biomolecule (bovine serum albumin) with a microsecond-range luminescence. The protein stabilizes the aggregates, acting as a carrier in aqueous environments. Despite spectral overlaps, the green phosphorescence can be separated by time-gated detection from the dominant autofluorescence of the protein arising from a covalently bound green fluorophore that emits in the nanosecond range. Interestingly, the aggregates also acted as energy donors able to sensitize the emission of a fraction of the fluorophores bound to the protein. This resulted in a microsecond-range luminescence of the fluorescent acceptors and a shortening of the excited-state lifetime of the phosphorescent aggregates. The process that can be traced by a 1000-fold increase in the acceptor's lifetime mirrors the donor's triplet character. The implications for phosphorescence lifetime imaging are discussed.

Soluble PtII-Containing Polymers Based on a 2,6-Bis(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-4-ethynylpyridine Ligand

A soluble Pt^II-acetylide polymer 6 was prepared in a supramolecular polymerization of a Pt^II-chloro precursor complex 5, which represents a self-complementary AB-type monomer. This new type of polymer combines the structural features of the common polyplatinynes and cationic Pt^II-acetylide complexes. Though the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the material still need to be advanced, a versatile and straightforward method for the preparation of soluble, cationic Pt^II-acetylide polymers with phosphorescent behavior is offered.

Phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes bearing a monoanionic C^N^N luminophore and tunable ancillary ligands

A new monoanionic pincer luminophore is presented, yielding phosphorescent Pt(ii) complexes bearing a neutral 1,2,3-triazole ring introduced via click chemistry. The overall charge, intermolecular interactions and excited state properties can be manipulated and controlled.

Towards Water Soluble Mitochondria-Targeting Theranostic Osmium(II) Triazole-Based Complexes

The complex [Os(btzpy)₂][PF₆]₂ (1, btzpy = 2,6-bis(1-phenyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine) has been prepared and characterised. Complex 1 exhibits phosphorescence (λem = 595 nm, τ = 937 ns, φem = 9.3% in degassed acetonitrile) in contrast to its known ruthenium(II) analogue, which is non-emissive at room temperature. The complex undergoes significant oxygen-dependent quenching of emission with a 43-fold reduction in luminescence intensity between degassed and aerated acetonitrile solutions, indicating its potential to act as a singlet oxygen sensitiser. Complex 1 underwent counterion metathesis to yield [Os(btzpy)₂]Cl₂ (1Cl), which shows near identical optical absorption and emission spectra to those of 1. Direct measurement of the yield of singlet oxygen sensitised by 1Cl was carried out (φ (¹O₂) = 57%) for air equilibrated acetonitrile solutions. On the basis of these photophysical properties, preliminary cellular uptake and luminescence microscopy imaging studies were conducted. Complex 1Cl readily entered the cancer cell lines HeLa and U2OS with mitochondrial staining seen and intense emission allowing for imaging at concentrations as low as 1 μM. Long-term toxicity results indicate low toxicity in HeLa cells with LD50 >100 μM. Osmium(II) complexes based on 1 therefore present an excellent platform for the development of novel theranostic agents for anticancer activity.

High yielding synthesis of 2,2'-bipyridine macrocycles, versatile intermediates in the synthesis of rotaxanes

We present an operationally simple approach to 2,2'-bipyridine macrocycles. Our method uses simple starting materials to produce these previously hard to access rotaxane precursors in remarkable yields (typically >65%) across a range of scales (0.1-5 mmol). All of the macrocycles reported are efficiently converted (>90%) to rotaxanes under AT-CuAAC conditions. With the requisite macrocycles finally available in sufficient quantities, we further demonstrate their long term utility through the first gram-scale synthesis of an AT-CuAAC [2]rotaxane and extend this powerful methodology to produce novel Sauvage-type molecular shuttles.

Control over the Self-Assembly Modes of Pt(II) Complexes by Alkyl Chain Variation: From Slipped to Parallel π-Stacks

We report the self-assembly of a new family of hydrophobic, bis(pyridyl) Pt(II) complexes featuring an extended oligophenyleneethynylene-derived π-surface appended with six long (dodecyloxy (2)) or short (methoxy (3)) side groups. Complex 2, containing dodecyloxy chains, forms fibrous assemblies with a slipped arrangement of the monomer units (dPt⋅⋅⋅Pt ≈14 Å) in both nonpolar solvents and the solid state. Dispersion-corrected PM6 calculations suggest that this organization is driven by cooperative π-π, C-H⋅⋅⋅Cl and π-Pt interactions, which is supported by EXAFS and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis. In contrast, nearly parallel π-stacks (dPt⋅⋅⋅Pt ≈4.4 Å) stabilized by multiple π-π and C-H⋅⋅⋅Cl contacts are obtained in the crystalline state for 3 lacking long side chains, as shown by X-ray analysis and PM6 calculations. Our results reveal not only the key role of alkyl chain length in controlling self-assembly modes but also show the relevance of Pt-bound chlorine ligands as new supramolecular synthons.

Strategies to create hierarchical self-assembled structures via cooperative non-covalent interactions

Cooperative phenomena are common processes involved in the hierarchical self-assembly of multiple systems in nature, such as the tobacco mosaic virus and a cell's cytoskeleton. Motivated by the high degree of order exhibited by these systems, a great deal of effort has been devoted in the past two decades to design hierarchical supramolecular polymers by combining different classes of cooperative interactions. In this review, we have classified the field of supramolecular polymers depending on the cooperative non-covalent forces driving their formation, with particular emphasis on recent examples from literature. We believe that this overview would help scientists in the field to design novel self-assembled systems with improved complexity and functionalities.
