2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole-Based Four-Coordinate Boron-Containing Materials with Highly Efficient Deep-Blue Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence

Difluoroboron Complexes Based on Benzimidazole-Phenolates as Blue Emitters

Novel four-coordinated boron complexes (1-5) were synthesized via a reaction between BF3·CH3OH and benzimidazole-phenolate ligands (L1-L5), which are N,O-donors. These complexes exhibit intense blue emission in the solution and solid states accompanied by notable fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF). The study of the structure-property relation, through theoretical and experimental approaches, revealed a distinctive trend where compounds incorporating electron-donating substituents (methyl and ethoxy groups) in the phenolate moiety manifest shifts in emission wavelengths across the blue spectrum, concomitant with an increase in ΦF. Furthermore, the incorporation of an aromatic ring into the benzimidazole moiety considerably intensifies the rate of radiative relaxation from excited states. Notably, in the solid phase, either as a crystalline powder or loaded into polymer films, these modified complexes maintain or even surpass ΦF values observed in molecular solutions, ranging from 0.18 to 0.57, depending on the substitution. This characteristic makes these compounds attractive for applications in optoelectronics. All of the compounds were characterized using 1H, 13C, 11B, and 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and the molecular structures were corroborated through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Computational calculations via time-dependent density functional theory further elucidate the tunability of optical bandgaps through group substitution on ligands, aligning well with experimental observations.

Label-free multimodal analysis of copper ions at below permissible exposure limit in the aqueous medium

An anthraimidazoledione based amphiphilic dye molecule was synthesized that shows formation of tuneable charge-transfer state in solution, susceptible to change in pH, polarity and hydrogen bonding ability of the medium. The compound also showed formation of nanoscopic self-assembled structure in water medium. The probe molecule can achieve multimodal detection (colorimetric, fluorimetric and electrochemical) of copper ions as low as 0.3 ppm in the aqueous medium. Addition of copper leads to dose-dependent ratiometric change in solution color from yellow to purple. The mechanistic investigation indicates that the coordination of copper ions was possible via simultaneous engagement of both imidazole nitrogen ends and neighbouring hydroxyl unit. Not only optical property, the changes in microenvironment also influence the selectivity as well as sensitivity of the probe molecule towards Cu2+ ions. Further, the optical probe is used for detection as well as quantification of copper ions in natural water samples without any sample pretreatment. Low-cost, reusable paper strips are developed for rapid, on-location detection of residual Cu2+ in real-life samples.

Blue emissive amidinate-based tetra-coordinated boron compounds

A series of novel amidinate ligated four-coordinated boron compounds, [(Ar)-C(tBuN)2BF2] (1BF2-6BF2), were synthesised and structurally characterised (Ar = 1-phenyl, 2-naphthyl, 2-anthryl, 9-anthryl, 9-phenanthryl and 1-pyrene). The increased π-conjugation of Ar-substitution on the amidinate ligand results in dark blue-emission in compounds 3BF2-6BF2. All these compounds are emissive in the solution state. The 2-anthryl substituted compound 3BF2 was found to exhibit a maximum quantum yield of 48% in dichloromethane. Theoretical studies were carried out which validate the hypothesis about the increased π-conjugation.

Highly electron-deficient 3,6-diaza-9-borafluorene scaffolds for the construction of luminescent chelate complexes

The synthesis and characterization of two fluorinated 3,6-diaza-9-hydroxy-9-borafluorene oxonium acids featuring improved hydrolytic stability and the strong electron-deficient character of the diazaborafluorene core is reported. These boracycles served as precursors of fluorescent spiro-type complexes with (O,N)-chelating ligands which revealed specific properties such as delayed emission, white light emission in the solid state and photocatalytic performance in singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation reactions.

Luminescent hexagonal microtubes prepared through water-induced self-assembly of a polymorphic organoboron compound: formation mechanism and waveguide behaviour

Tetra-coordinated organoboron (TCOB) compounds are promising candidates for developing high-performance optical devices due to their excellent optoelectronic performance. Fabricating TCOB-based nanomaterials of controlled and defined morphology through rapid and easy-to-execute protocols can significantly accelerate their practical utility in the aforesaid applications. Herein, we report water-induced self-assembly (WISA) to convert a polymorphic TCOB complex (HNBI-B, derived from a 2-(2'-hydroxy-naphthyl)-benzimidazole precursor) into two unique nanomorphologies viz. nanodiscoids (NDs) and fluorescent microtubes with hexagonal cross-sections (HMTs). Detailed electron microscopic investigations revealed that oriented assembly and fusion of the initially formed NDs yield the blue emissive HMTs (SSQY = 26.7%) that exhibited highly promising photophysical behaviour. For example, the HMTs outperformed all the crystal polymorphs of HNBI-B obtained from CHCl3, EtOAc and MeOH in emissivity and also exhibited superior waveguide behaviour, with a much lower optical loss coefficient α' = 1.692 dB mm-1 compared to the rod-shaped microcrystals of HNBI-B obtained from MeOH (α' = 1.853 dB mm-1). Thus, this work reports rapid access to high performance optical nanomaterials through WISA, opening new avenues for creating useful nanomaterial morphologies with superior optical performance.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Borinic Acid Derivatives

Borinic acids [R2B(OH)] and their chelate derivatives are a subclass of organoborane compounds used in cross-coupling reactions, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, polymer or optoelectronics materials. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the synthesis of diarylborinic acids and their four-coordinated analogs. The main strategies to build up borinic acids rely either on the addition of organometallic reagents to boranes (B(OR)3, BX3, aminoborane, arylboronic esters) or the reaction of triarylboranes with a ligand (diol, amino alcohol, etc.). After general practical considerations of borinic acids, an overview of the main synthetic methods, their scope and limitations is provided. We also discuss some mechanistic aspects.

Four-Coordinate Monoboron Complexes with 8-Hydroxyquinolin-5-Sulfonate: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Theoretical Studies, and Luminescence Properties

8-Hydroxyquinolin-5-sulfonic acid (8HQSA) was combined with 3-pyridineboronic acid (3PBA) or 4-pyridineboronic acid (4PBA) to give two zwitterionic monoboron complexes in crystalline form. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and IR, 1H NMR, UV-Visible, and luminescence spectroscopy. The analyses revealed compounds with boron atoms adopting tetrahedral geometry. In the solid state, the molecular components are linked by charge-assisted (B)(O-H···−O(S) and N+-H···O(S) hydrogen bonds aside from C-H···O contacts and π···π interactions, as shown by Hirshfeld surface analyses and 2D fingerprint plots. The luminescence properties were characterized in terms of the emission behavior in solution and the solid state, showing emission in the bluish-green region in solution and large positive solvatofluorochromism, caused by intramolecular charge transfer. According to TD-DFT calculations at the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory simulating an ethanol solvent environment, the emission properties are originated from π-π * and n-π * HOMO-LUMO transitions.

Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a plethora of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center (O,O-, N,C-, N,O-, and N,N-) has been explored to tune the electronic and photophysical properties of tetra-coordinated boron compounds. A number of fascinating molecules with interesting properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission by changing the solvent polarity were realised. Owing to their rich and unique properties, some of the molecules have shown applications in making optoelectronic devices, probes and so on. This perspective provides an overview of the recent developments of tetra-coordinated boron compounds and their potential applications.

Benzimidazole-Based N,O Boron Complexes as Deep Blue Solid-State Fluorophores

Benzimidazole-based boranils were designed and synthesized in order to assess the influence of halogen substituents on their optoelectronic properties. All compounds are photoluminescent in solution and solid state. Compared to the free ligands, the new boranils emit at a lower wavelength, by elimination of the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer observed with the ligands. In the solid state, some of the boranils exhibit a deep blue emission, presenting Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) coordinates with an x-component of less than 0.16 and a y-component smaller than 0.04, highly desired values for the development of blue emitting materials.

Stabilization of the Elusive 9-Carbene-9-Borafluorene Monoanion

Two-electron reduction of carbene-supported 9-bromo-9-borafluorenes with excess KC₈ , Na, or Li-naphthalenide affords six N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)- or cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC)-stabilized borafluorene anions (3-8)-the first isolated and structurally authenticated examples of the elusive 9-carbene-9-borafluorene monoanion. The electronic structure, bonding, and aromaticity of the boracyclic anions were comprehensively investigated via computational studies. Compounds 5 and 8 react with metal halides via salt elimination to give new B-E (E=Au, Se, Ge)-containing materials (9-12). Upon reaction with diketones, the carbene ligand cleanly dissociates from 5 or 8 to yield new B-O containing spirocycles (13-14) that cannot be easily obtained using "normal" valent borafluorene compounds. Collectively, these results support the notion that carbene-stabilized monoanionic borafluorenes may serve as a new platform for the one-step construction of higher-value boracyclic materials.

Boronic acid complexes with amino phenolic N,O-ligands and their use for non-covalent protein fluorescence labeling

Phenylboronic acid (PBA) forms neutral tetrahedral N,O-coordinated 6-membered cyclic complexes with stability constants reaching the values as large as 1.3 × 10⁴ M^-1 at pH 7.4 in water with amino phenolic compounds including 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole (HPBI) often used for protein probing and labeling. The crystal structures of isolated complexes demonstrate unusually high for boronate adducts degree of the tetrahedral character of the boron atom with short B-N bonds in agreement with their high solution stability. The complexation of PBA with HPBI, causes a strong enhancement of the fluorescence of the "enol" form of the ligand, increases the affinity of the dye to a protein (bovine serum albumin) and makes more pronounced the shift in emission maximum induced by the protein binding. Similar, but larger effects are observed with an amino HPBI derivative and with a stronger boronic acid benzoxaborole. Thus, the binding constant to the protein about 2 × 10⁴ M^-1 for free HPBI increases to 1.2 × 10⁶ M^-1 for the complex of 5-amino-HPBI with benzoxaborole making it suitable for an efficient non-covalent protein labeling or bioconjugation.

New luminescent tetracoordinate boron complexes: an in-depth experimental and theoretical characterisation and their application in OLEDs

Four-Coordinate Organoboron Platforms for Efficient Red Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

So far both three- and four-coordinate organoboron compounds have been widely applied in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. However, the use of four-coordinate organoboron compounds as host materials is rarely reported. In this work, two new four-coordinate organoboron compounds, namely 8-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-6,6-difluoro-6H-6λ⁴ ,7λ⁴ -benzo[4',5']imidazo[1',2':3,4][1,3,2]diazaborolo[1,5-a]pyridine (B1PCz) and 8-(3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-6,6-difluoro-6H-6λ⁴ ,7λ⁴ -benzo[4',5']imidazo[1',2':3,4][1,3,2]diazaborolo[1,5-a]pyridine (B1MCz), were successfully designed, synthesized, and fully characterized. The red OLEDs using B1PCz and B1MCz as host materials achieved relatively high device performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.8 % and 11.8 %, respectively. These results will expand the scope of organoboron compounds for OLED materials and reveal the great potential of four-coordinate organoboron materials.

Turn-on fluorescence sensors based on dynamic intramolecular N→B-coordination

A series of ten aryl-triazole-functionalized boranes bearing BMes₂-groups and capable of forming intramolecular five-membered N→B-coordinated heterocycles, has been prepared by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition.

The effect of locking π-conjugation in organoboron moieties in the structures of luminescent tetracoordinate boron complexes

A series of 8 luminescent borafluorene complexes were extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to elucidate the effect of organoboron moiety rigidification on the physicochemical properties of these compounds. Due to the spiro geometry of the boron atom, borafluorene and ligand units are perpendicularly aligned, which considerably affects the flexibility of the molecule as well as its solid-state structure. Through comparative analysis with close diphenyl analogues, we show how these structural features influence the thermal, photoluminescent and charge mobility behaviour of the studied compounds. Crystal structural analysis revealed that the molecules are connected mostly through C-HO and C-Hπ interactions formed between perpendicularly aligned borafluorene and ligand moieties from neighboured molecules, serving as a complementary donor and acceptor of electron density, respectively. This also efficiently prevents molecules from engaging in unfavoured π-stacking contact. Furthermore, structural analysis suggests that borafluorene complexes possess a considerable degree of flexibility due to OBN heterocycle distortions and mutual borafluorene-ligand plane movements. The magnitude of these effects strictly depends on the ligand structure and may lead either to enhancing or lowering the quantum yield value with respect to BPh₂ analogues, while the absorption and emission wavelength are slightly affected. The measured photophysical parameters for solid-state samples showed that the studied complexes are much better emitters in their crystalline states that in amorphous films. The TD-DFT and NTO calculations revealed a significant change in frontier molecular distribution, with the HOMO localized on the borafluorene moiety. However, as the HOMO-LUMO transition is geometrically not favoured, excitation occurred from HOMO-1 localized on the ligand. Finally, aggregation effects were discussed based on supramolecular arrangements in crystal structures and charge transfer rates obtained from theoretical calculations in the framework of the Marcus-Hush approximation. They suggest that borafluorene complexes are much better electron carriers with respect to non-annulated BPh₂ complexes.

Nonconjugated Fluorescent Molecular Cages of Trinuclear Fluoroborate Complexes with Salicylaldehyde-Based Schiff Base Ligands

Fluorescent organic materials are commonly π-conjugated planar molecules. In the present work, however, we report a novel class of nonconjugated fluorescent molecular cages of trinuclear fluoroborate complexes (nine samples) with salicylaldehyde-based Schiff base ligands. Owing to the stress from lone pair electrons of N atom in the triethylamine bridge, these B(III) complexes exhibit unusual enantiomers with a tripodlike side-single-opening structure. They emit blue, green, and red emission with large Stokes shifts (up to 159 nm) and high fluorescence quantum yields in both solution (up to 0.24) and solid state (up to 0.25), which might contribute to their strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds and weak intermolecular and intramolecular π-π interactions. Combining their advantages of nonconjugation and biocompatibility, these flexible complexes have potential applications in living cell imaging and anion hosts. We have examined the inherent relationships between their chemical structures and emission properties and afforded a new stage for the design of nonconjugated fluorescent fluoroborate complexes.

Fluorescent mesogenic boron difluoride complexes derived from heterocyclic benzoxazoles

One new series of boron difluoride complexes 1 derived from heterocyclic benzoxazoles 2 was reported, and their mesomorphic and optical properties were also investigated. One single crystal of the mesogenic BF₂ complex 1a (m = 12, n = 8) was obtained, and its single crystal and molecular structure were resolved. The geometry coordination at the central boron atom is tetrahedral. It crystallizes in a triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with Z = 4. The overall molecular shape was described as slightly bent Z-shapes, and the molecular length was ca. 34.06 Å. Weak intramolecular and intermolecular H-bonds observed in the crystal lattice were attributed to the formation of mesophases. The results indicated that benzoxazoles 2a (n = 6, 8, 12) formed monotropic SmA phases, while boron difluoride complexes 1a (n = 6, 8, 12, 16) exhibited monotropic SmC mesophases. In contrast, all compounds of 2b and 1b (m = 1, n = 12 for all) were not mesogenic. Boron complexes 1 emitted a pronounced violet emission at λ_max = 399 nm in solution at room temperature.

Reunderstanding the Fluorescent Behavior of Four-Coordinate Monoboron Complexes Containing Monoanionic Bidentate Ligands

We demonstrated for the first time that, at temperatures below the melting point of a given polar solvent, the emission of some four-coordinate monoboron complexes containing monoanionic bidentate (NO) ligands shifted to lower wavelengths, but no such shift was observed for studies conducted in nonpolar solvents. This means that the emission from a polar solvent appears at shorter wavelengths if compared with that from a nonpolar solvent when the measurement was performed at low temperatures, a phenomenon totally different from that observed for conventional solvatochromic fluorophores. The finding was rationalized by considering the temperature-dependent conformational relaxation of the tetrahedron monoboron complexes from their local excited (LE) state to their relaxed excited (RE) state. Further studies revealed that variating the structure of the chelating ligands could result in remarkable changes in the fluorescent colors of the monoboron complexes. However, changing the structure of other two monodentate ligands showed little effect upon the fluorescence property of the compounds. Therefore, it is anticipated that the monoboron complexes may be taken as a platform to construct a variety of functional molecular systems via alternating the structure of the chelating ligand and that of the monodentate ligand. As an example, naphthalene was introduced as a monodentate ligand, and independent emissions from naphthalene unit and the other part of the monoboron complex as well as intramolecular energy transfer between them were observed. It is believed that the present work provides a new insight into the monoboron complexes, laying the foundation for them to be explored for developing novel molecular systems.

The Influence of the π-Conjugated Spacer on Photophysical Properties of Difluoroboranyls Derived from Amides Carrying a Donor Group

A series of difluoroboranyls derived from amides carrying a variable π-conjugated spacer between the electron-donating (D) and electron-accepting (A) groups was synthesized and characterized with (1)H, (11)B, (13)C, (15)N, and (19)F NMR, electronic absorption, fluorescence spectroscopies, and first-principle calculations. The D-to-A distance in the series varied from 1.5 to 4.5 Å, causing bathochromic shifts of both the absorption and fluorescence maxima by more than 120 and 213 nm, respectively. These trends are rationalized by quantum-mechanical calculations that allow for quantification of the charge-transfer distance. Theoretical calculations were also performed to determine the vibronic couplings and thus to reproduce the experimental band shapes.

Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of novel N–N linked bis-(diphenylboron) complexes

Novel five-membered-ring and six-membered-ring bis-(diphenylboron) complexes are reported.
