Structurally Precise Two-Transition-Metal Water Oxidation Catalysts: Quantifying Adjacent 3d Metals by Synchrotron X-Radiation Anomalous Dispersion Scattering. Inorg Chem 2022; 61:6252-6262. Abstract
Mixed 3d metal oxides are some of the most promising water oxidation catalysts (WOCs), but it is very difficult to know the locations and percent occupancies of different 3d metals in these heterogeneous catalysts. Without such information, it is hard to quantify catalysis, stability, and other properties of the WOC as a function of the catalyst active site structure. This study combines the site selective synthesis of a homogeneous WOC with two adjacent 3d metals, [Co2Ni2(PW9O34)2]10- (Co2Ni2P2) as a tractable molecular model for CoNi oxide, with the use of multiwavelength synchrotron X-radiation anomalous dispersion scattering (synchrotron XRAS) that quantifies both the location and percent occupancy of Co (∼97% outer-central-belt positions only) and Ni (∼97% inner-central-belt positions only) in Co2Ni2P2. This mixed-3d-metal complex catalyzes water oxidation an order of magnitude faster than its isostructural analogue, [Co4(PW9O34)2]10- (Co4P2). Four independent and complementary lines of evidence confirm that Co2Ni2P2 and Co4P2 are the principal WOCs and that Co2+(aq) is not. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed that Co4P2 and Co2Ni2P2 have similar frontier orbitals, while stopped-flow kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate that water oxidation by both complexes follows analogous multistep mechanisms, including likely Co-OOH formation, with the energetics of most steps being lower for Co2Ni2P2 than for Co4P2. Synchrotron XRAS should be generally applicable to active-site-structure-reactivity studies of multi-metal heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
Reactions involving reductive aggregation of MnO4- in methanol in the presence of CeIV and an excess of carboxylic acid have led to the synthesis of structurally related Ce/Mn clusters, [Ce3Mn5O8(OMe)(O2CBut)13(MeOH)] (1) and [Ce2Mn3O5(O2CPh)9(MeOH)3] (2), containing at least one {Mn2Ce2O4} cubane unit. The cores of both clusters contain Mnx units separated by three (1) or two (2) CeIV ions. Fits of variable-temperature, solid-state dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal dominant ferromagnetic interactions within 1 and 2, resulting in the maximum S = 17/2 and S = 5 ground state spins, respectively, and thus suggesting significant ferromagnetic (F) interactions between the Mnx units that are ≥6 Å apart and separated by four intervening bonds through diamagnetic CeIV. Fits of magnetic susceptibility data also revealed unusual long-range F interactions, and this finding was further supported by high-field EPR measurements and simulations. Density functional theory calculations and a Wannier function analysis confirm long-range interactions and indicate a Mn-Ce-Mn superexchange pathway via Mn-d/Ce-f orbital overlap/hybridization.

Abstract
Two new heterometallic Mn(IV)-M(2+) compounds with formula [Mn6M2O9(4-(t)BuC6H4COO)10(4-(t)BuC6H4COOH)5] (M = Ca(2+) (1), Sr(2+) (2)) have been crystallized. The core of both compounds consists of a planar Mn6 ring, where the Mn(IV) ions are alternatively bridged by (μ3-O)2(μ-RCOO) and (μ4-O)(μ-RCOO)2 ligands, and the two alkaline earth ions are located to both sides of the wheel, linked to the oxo bridges, generating three fused [Mn2M2O4](4+) cuboids. These compounds show a net antiferromagnetic behavior, more important for 2 (Sr(2+)) than for 1 (Ca(2+)). The fitting of the experimental data was performed with the support of DFT calculations, considering four different exchange pathways: two between adjacent Mn(IV) ions (J1 and J2) and two between nonadjacent Mn(IV) ions (J3 and J4). The results of the analysis show that J1 and J2 are of the opposite sign, the ferromagnetic contribution corresponding to the [Mn2(μ4-O)(μ-RCOO)2](4+) unit (J2). The influence of the M(2+) ions in the magnetic behavior is analyzed for 1 and 2 and for three hypothetical models with the structural parameters of 1 containing Mg(2+), Sr(2+) or without the M(2+) ions. In spite of the diamagnetic character of the alkaline earth ions, their influence on the magnetic behavior has been evidenced and correlated with their polarizing effect. Moreover, the magnetic interactions between nonadjacent ions are non-negligible.

Abstract
The reaction of [Fe3O(O2CPh)6(H2O)3](O2CPh) with lanthanide/rare earth nitrate salts in the presence of triethanolamine (H3tea) in acetonitrile/methanol solution yields a series of compounds with isostructural tetranuclear core motifs [Fe(III)2Ln(III)2(μ3-OH)2(teaH)2(O2CCPh)6]·3MeCN (Ln = Ce (1), Pr (2), Nd (3), Sm (4), Eu (5), Gd (6), Tb (7), Dy (8), Ho (9), Er (10), Tm (11), Yb (12), Y (13)). In all cases the core topology is a defect-dicubane planar or "butterfly" Fe2Ln2 motif. Compounds 1-13 were investigated using a combination of experimental techniques and theoretical studies. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out on all compounds. The magnetic coupling between the two Fe(III) centres is antiferromagnetic, with J(FeFe) ca.-6.71(4) cm(-1), while the Fe-Ln couplings are much weaker, e.g. J(FeGd) = 0.18(1) cm(-1). Compounds 6, 7, 8 and 13 were selected for Mössbauer studies in order to investigate the influence of isotropic (Gd(III)), highly anisotropic non-Kramers and Kramers (Tb(III) and Dy(III)) and diamagnetic (Y(III)) rare earth ions on the local environment of the Fe(III) centres. Compounds 3, 6, 8 and 13 were also studied using X-Band EPR spectroscopy. For 13, with the diamagnetic Y(III) ion, this made it possible to obtain the D, E, J(FeFe) and g parameters for the iron centres. It is shown that the low-temperature spectra of compounds 3, 6 and 8 are determined by magnetic properties of rare-earth ions and the dipole-dipole interactions between the Ln(III) ions. The Fe-Ln interactions were confirmed as very weak and dipolar in nature by the temperature dependence of EPR spectra at T > 20 K.
