Abstract
H2dedpa-N,N'-pram (H2L1), a new chelator derived from the hexadentate ligand 1,2-bis[[(6-carboxypyridin-2-yl)methyl]amino]ethane (H2dedpa), which incorporates 3-propylamine chains anchored to the secondary amines of the ethylenediamine core of the latter, has emerged as a very promising scaffold for preparing 68Ga- and 64Cu-based positron emission tomography probes. This new platform is cost-effective and easy to prepare, and the two pendant primary amines make it versatile for the preparation of bifunctional chelators by conjugation and/or click chemistry. Reported herein, we have also included the related H2dedpa-N,N'-prpta (H2L2) platform as a simple structural model for its conjugated systems. X-ray crystallography confirmed that the N4O2 coordination sphere provided by the dedpa2- core is maintained at both Ga(III) and Cu(II). The complex formation equilibria were deeply investigated by a thorough multitechnique approach with potentiometric, NMR spectrometric, and UV-vis spectrophotometric titrations, revealing effective chelation. The thermodynamic stability of the Ga(III) complexes at physiological relevant conditions is slightly higher than that of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA), the common and clinically approved chelator used in the clinic [pGa = 19.5 (dedpa-N,N'-pram) and 20.8 (dedpa-N,N'-prpta) versus 18.5 (DOTA) at identical conditions], and significantly higher for the Cu(II) complexes [pCu = 21.96 (dedpa-N,N'-pram) and 22.8 (dedpa-N,N'-prpta) versus 16.2 (DOTA)], which are even more stable than that of the parent ligand dedpa2- (pCu = 18.5) and that of 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4,7-triacetic acid (NOTA) (pCu = 18.5). This high stability found for Cu(II) complexes is related to the conversion of the secondary amines of the ethylenediamine core of dedpa2- into tertiary amines, whereby the architecture of the new H2L1 chelator is doubly optimal in the case of this metal ion: high accessibility of the primary amine groups and their incorporation via the secondary amines, which contributes to a significant increase in the stability of the metal complex. Quantitative labeling of both chelators with both radionuclides ([68Ga]Ga3+ and [64Cu]Cu2+) was observed within 15 min at room temperature with concentrations as low as 10-5 M. Furthermore, serum stability studies confirmed a high radiochemical in vitro stability of all systems and therefore confirmed H2L1 as a promising and versatile chelator for further radiopharmaceutical in vivo studies.

Abstract
Detection and removal of metal ion contaminants have attracted great interest due to the health risks that they represent for humans and wildlife. Among the proposed compounds developed for these purposes, thiourea derivatives have been shown as quite efficient chelating agents of metal cations and have been proposed for heavy metal ion removal and for components of high-selectivity sensors. Understanding the nature of metal-ionophore activity for these compounds is thus of high relevance. We present a theoretical study on the interaction between substituted thioureas and metal cations, namely, Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+. Two substituent groups have been chosen: 2-furoyl and m-trifluoromethylphenyl. Combining density functional theory simulations with wave function analysis techniques, we study the nature of the metal-thiourea interaction and characterize the bonding properties. Here, it is shown how the N,N'-disubstituted derivative has a strong affinity for Hg2+, through cation-hydrogen interactions, due to its greater oxidizing capacity.

Abstract
In this study, the accurate effectiveness of CaO in mitigating Cd bioavailability in paddy soil-rice system was investigated and moreover, the potential for reversibility of CaO liming process was provided. Increasing soil pH to ≥6.5 by CaO was determined to be the minimal threshold for minimizing Cd transfer into rice in historically contaminated soils across light to severe Cd levels, while an elevated CaO ratio was needed for soil with recent input of Cd. In CaO remediation treatment, a reduced pool of bioavailable Cd in rhizosphere soil coupled with an increased Cd retention by Fe plaque and an inhibited planta Cd transfer was determined consistently and proposed to be largely responsible for the significant reduction in brown rice Cd. Under continuous simulated acid precipitation test, a negligible level of Cd in eluate with ∼1 unit higher pH than control was recorded with CaO. Significant acidification, however, increased Cd solubilization in the limed soil than in unlimited control, notably at pH 5.5-6.5. As indicated by Visual MINTEQ, a higher Cd-carbonate solubility and much decreased Cd complexation on Fe-(hydr)-oxides across this pH range occurred as a result of elevated Ca input. This suggests that a high soil pH (≥6.5) needs to be permanently maintained once liming has been performed to minimize Cd mobilization. Therefore, amending Cd-contaminated soils with CaO is a cost-effective remedial measure for reducing Cd bioavailability to paddy rice, while a high soil pH need to be permanently maintained to sustain this beneficial effect.

Abstract
The complexation properties toward Pb(2+) and Bi(3+) of the macrocyclic ligands 6,6'-((1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,7-diyl)bis(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H2do2pa) and 6,6'-((4,10-dimethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,7-diyl)bis(methylene))dipicolinic acid (H2Me-do2pa) have been investigated. A new three-step synthesis of H2do2pa following the bisaminal methodology has also been developed. The X-ray structures of [Pb(Me-do2pa)]·6H2O and [Bi(Me-do2pa)](NO3)·H2O show that the two metal ions are eight-coordinated by the ligand. The two complexes exist as the racemic Δ(δδδδ)/Λ(λλλλ) mixture both in the solid state and in solution, as indicated by NMR and DFT studies. The stability constants of the lead(II) and bismuth(III) complexes of the two ligands were determined in 0.5 M KCl using potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques. The stability constants determined for the complexes of Pb(2+) are relatively high (log KML = 16.44 and 18.44 for H2do2pa and H2Me-do2pa, respectively) and exceptionally high for the complexes of Bi(3+) (log KML = 32.0 and 34.2 for H2do2pa and H2Me-do2pa, respectively). The [Pb(Me-do2pa)] complex presents rather fast formation and very good kinetic inertness toward transchelation. Additionally, the [Bi(Me-do2pa)](+) complex was found to present a remarkably fast complexation rate (full complexation in ∼2 min at pH 5.0, acetate buffer) and a very good kinetic inertness with respect to metal ion dissociation (half-life of 23.9 min in 1 M HCl), showing promise for potential applications in α-radioimmunotherapy.

Abstract
First insights into the coordination properties and host-guest behavior of a "two story" calix[6]aza-cryptand (1) are described. The ligand is constituted of a triazacyclononane (TACN) cap and three pyridine (PY) spacers connected to the calix[6]arene small rim. The resulting N6 donor site coordinates Pb(II) ions to give complexes that are highly stable. X-ray diffraction structures reveal a hemidirected environment for Pb(II) with strong coordination to the TACN cap and weaker bonds with the three PY residues. A guest molecule, either water or EtOH, sitting in the calixarene macrocycle and hydrogen-bonded to the phenoxyl units at the level of the small rim further stabilizes the complexes through electrostatic interactions with the metal center and the calixarene core. In-depth (1)H NMR studies confirm the host-guest behavior of the complexes in solution, with evidence of embedment of neutral guest molecules such as EtOH, BuOH, and N-Me-formamide. Hence, in spite of the presence of a N6 donor, the calixarene macrocycle can be open to guest interaction, giving rise to seven-coordinate dicationic complexes. Noteworthy also is the flexibility of the macrocycle that allows Pb(II) to adopt its preferred hemidirected environment in spite of the three covalent links connecting the calixarene core to the three PY groups. The flexibility of the system is further illustrated by the possible coordination of an exogenous anionic ligand in the exo position. Hence, compared to the previously described "one story" calix[6]aza-cryptands, ligand 1 displays several similar but also new features that are discussed.

Abstract
Radiometals comprise many useful radioactive isotopes of various metallic elements. When properly harnessed, these have valuable emission properties that can be used for diagnostic imaging techniques, such as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT, e.g.(67)Ga, (99m)Tc, (111)In, (177)Lu) and positron emission tomography (PET, e.g.(68)Ga, (64)Cu, (44)Sc, (86)Y, (89)Zr), as well as therapeutic applications (e.g.(47)Sc, (114m)In, (177)Lu, (90)Y, (212/213)Bi, (212)Pb, (225)Ac, (186/188)Re). A fundamental critical component of a radiometal-based radiopharmaceutical is the chelator, the ligand system that binds the radiometal ion in a tight stable coordination complex so that it can be properly directed to a desirable molecular target in vivo. This article is a guide for selecting the optimal match between chelator and radiometal for use in these systems. The article briefly introduces a selection of relevant and high impact radiometals, and their potential utility to the fields of radiochemistry, nuclear medicine, and molecular imaging. A description of radiometal-based radiopharmaceuticals is provided, and several key design considerations are discussed. The experimental methods by which chelators are assessed for their suitability with a variety of radiometal ions is explained, and a large selection of the most common and most promising chelators are evaluated and discussed for their potential use with a variety of radiometals. Comprehensive tables have been assembled to provide a convenient and accessible overview of the field of radiometal chelating agents.

Abstract
Cadmium is a heavy metal of considerable toxicity with destructive impact on most organ systems. It is widely distributed in humans, the chief sources of contamination being cigarette smoke, welding, and contaminated food and beverages. Toxic impacts are discussed and appear to be proportional to body burden of cadmium. Detoxification of cadmium with EDTA and other chelators is possible and has been shown to be therapeutically beneficial in humans and animals when done using established protocols.

Abstract
The coordination properties of the macrocyclic receptor N,N'-bis[(6-carboxy-2-pyridyl)methylene]-1,10-diaza-15-crown-5 (H(2)bp15c5) towards the lanthanide ions are reported. Thermodynamic stability constants were determined by pH-potentiometric titration at 25 °C in 0.1 M KCl. A smooth decrease in complex stability is observed upon decreasing the ionic radius of the Ln(III) ion from La [log K(LaL) = 12.52(2)] to Lu [log K(LuL) = 10.03(6)]. Luminescence lifetime measurements recorded on solutions of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes confirm the absence of inner-sphere water molecules in these complexes. (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of the complexes formed with the diamagnetic La(III) metal ion were obtained in D(2)O solution and assigned with the aid of HSQC and HMBC 2D heteronuclear experiments, as well as standard 2D homonuclear COSY and NOESY spectra. The (1)H NMR spectra of the paramagnetic Ce(III), Eu(III) and Yb(III) complex suggest nonadentate binding of the ligand to the metal ion. The syn conformation of the ligand in [Ln(bp15c5)](+) complexes implies the occurrence of two helicities, one associated with the layout of the picolinate pendant arms (absolute configuration Δ or Λ), and the other to the five five-membered chelate rings formed by the binding of the crown moiety (absolute configuration δ or λ). A detailed conformational analysis performed with the aid of DFT calculations (B3LYP model) indicates that the complexes adopt a Λ(λδ)(δδλ) [or Δ(δλ)(λλδ)] conformation in aqueous solution. Our calculations show that the interaction between the Ln(III) ion and several donor atoms of the crown moiety is weakened as the ionic radius of the metal ion decreases, in line with the decrease of complex stability observed on proceeding to the right across the lanthanide series.
